"Turbo (Soren, 2013)"
Fri Jul-19-13 11:36 AM by Frank Longo

This flick is pretty awful, complete with subpar animation, one-note characters, and some troubling messages. I'd pass.

Here's my full review for Movie Mezzanine: http://wp.me/p2ZYne-3zz

Anyone taking their kids to this?

I try my hardest to let her have Dreamworks Animation movies for mother son time. But I will say the trailers have made it seem halfway decent. I mean Sam L Jackson and Snoop as snails should be good for some laughs.

But this joint was good. Very funny. The music was dope too. One of the characters was in that joint singing Pitbull and Lil Jon. One race send featured 2Pac "Holla If Ya Hear Me". Lol.

fun, visually engaging, funny at times (not ha-ha funny, but like aw that's cute funny), nice little by-the-numbers underdog story. caught a bad break coming after two big animated franchises-- monsters and DM-- but it's a good flick, good cast. kids will love it. 90% of the hate it's getting is just people looking for reasons to pile on ryan reynolds.

I don't know what some of you were looking for, but as far as kids films this year, this is good. Not Monsters University good, but still good. You leave with a smile on your face. It seems like people were looking tom hate this. If you saw the trailer you get what you see. The 3D is top notch and the animation is solid. I really like the design of the human characters with their expressions. I will admit the inciting incident needed to happen sooner as they had Turbo in the garden a little too long. But yea this is enjoyable.

They might have gone in skeptical due to the trailer, but Turbo's not the type of film that has a target on its back. If anything, it went under the radar.

I hated it due to its horrifically one-note characters, its bland storytelling, and what I considered to be troubling themes. But I wouldn't have gone if I didn't think it could've been good-- it had a positive Rotten Tomato rating, for Christ's sake, lol.

haters swarmed on RIPD (maybe rightfully so, i haven't seen it) and turbo definitely caught some of that blowback. every entertainment newscast i watched that weekend led with how ryan reynolds had NOT ONE BUT TWO movies tank at the box office. HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED BEFORE?! pssh. turbo didn't deserve to get lumped in with all that.

If adjusted for inflation, it was the lowest opening weekend for a computer-animated film in Dreamworks history. And that's not even considering that it had the 3D ticket prices, which many of the other lowest grossing Dreamworks animated films didn't have.

I'd say it's definitely unfair to blame Ryan Reynolds for Turbo underperforming, as the movie wasn't remotely advertised as a "Ryan Reynolds film" (although in my personal opinion, his bland voicework doesn't help the film). But I'd say it's definitely fair to call Turbo a disappointment at best, though admittedly since animated films tend to have legs it's premature to call it a full-blown flop.

Dreamworks' Flushed Away, if adjusted for inflation, took in the ballpark of 200 mil internationally, and that's definitely considered a flop-- if Turbo does less than Flushed Away, then it's fair to call it a flop.

And shitting on RIPD is definitely fair. At absolute best, I can call it an unoriginal mess with some amusing non-sequiturs. That's at best. And since Bridges and Parker are having fun in it, and Reynolds is a dull wet blanket throughout the proceedings, it's probably pretty fair to lob at least a hefty chunk of the blame on him for that one.

gotcha.

listen, if you're mad about a snail racing in the indy 500, then you're basically just mad at animated movies, 'cause that's the entire point of their existence: to show us ridiculous stuff that can't happen in real life. talking toys, monsters attending college, rats cooking gourmet meals. the indy 500 thing works in the universe they created. just say animated movies make you mad and keep it moving.

is that the writers of Ratatouille put in the work of setting up a believable, consistant world.

when someone discovered that the kitchen was run by rats, the health board shut them down.

Turbo is set in our world, with no explanation of why humans can talk to fucking snails, and then a highly regulated sport suddenly allows a fucking snail to compete. it's lazy, stupid writing.

yeah, there were talking rats and, yeah, they cooked gourmet food for humans and, yeah, they were secretly running a restaurant.... BUT WHEN THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT FOUND OUT, THEY SHUT THEM DOWN! PLAUSIBLE! 'cause they really would get shut down in real life. the talking rats who cooked gourmet food and secretly ran the restaurant.

but a snail racing in the indy 500? in a world where humans can talk to snails? which they can't but i think they can because i haven't seen this movie i'm so mad about? that's just lazy, stupid writing.

The snails and humans don't talk to each other. The snails only talk to other snails. And they show the Indy 500 guy initially saying no to letting Turbo race no matter how fast he is, cause he's a snail.

Try seeing it before shitting on it.

about succeeding against the odds. But, i ain't gonna lie, it is kinda dumb, lol. I am not trying to be hard on it but when i first saw it i thought to myself watch it again before making up your mind. So i saw it again right after watching Prisoners. Hmmmmm, it's still dumb but i did like it however most adults won't. Anyway Despite the totally ridiculous storyline i still give it a pass. At least it did not put me to sleep like The Croods.
