the grimiest parts of North Braddock, PA
Beaver Falls and West Virginia
I can't wait....this is going to be fantastic.
Great script, great cast...this SCREAMS Oscar buzz for Bale, Harrelson, Affleck Dafoe, and Saldana (for best supporting actress her role is *QUITE* good)
Bale has been consistently choosing the best projects to date. As does Harrelson and Affleck and the like.

where personal auteur issues are wrapped up in small movies with big themes
Personally I think Scott Cooper bit off a little more than he could chew
Can't fault him for gritty ambition, and for doing a complete 180 after Crazy Heart, but to me all of it just didn't come together
Woody Harrelson towers over the movie as the sneering heel, which is a problem because this is supposed to be a small, intimate drama about two brothers, one of whom is a war vet (Casey Affleck) suffering from PTSD, and the other who is trying to put his life back together (Batman). And while Woody's entertaining to watch, and I get that he's supposed to be a supreme asshole when it comes to this world of underground fighting, his malevolence feels like it belongs in another movie.
The trailers might be a bit misleading, so that might lead to some disappointment.
I didn't hate it, though.

I don't know why this is getting an awards push cause Prisoners is holding down the bleak thriller fare. I mean cotdamn was this shit violent and this is from a nigga who loves violent ass movies. But yo it was hard for to give a shit. They show Bale's character as a good man, but this nigga's character had no personality, so it was still hard for me to give a shit.
Well shot and directed but you can definitely wait for Netflix.

I mean, Prisoners, the Oldboy remake and this?
Something will be missed at the theaters. I think it may be this.
Cause I do want to see Oldboy (I dig Mark Prosotevich (sp?): The Cell, I Am Legend. After listening to him in interviews, it's clear he has a *SERIOUS* amount of respect for the original film and wanted to do something totally different YET stay within the confines of the world. And from what i've read (the shooting script), he may have very well succeeded)....
but yea, I may miss this one. I mean, it was shot here in Pittsburgh and it's gotten NO PRESS like is usually done for films shot here.
9. "RE: You could tell in was shot in Pitts too." In response to Reply # 8
>LOL at them calling it something else in the film tho.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
that's funny. Because, even though hollywood directors love to come here and shoot due to how varied the city landscape is (you could literally SUB the Shadyside neighborhood for a tony, tree lined ass New Jersey suburb; you could shoot in Sharpsburg and Etna if you wanted to recreate the Narrows from Batman (and they should have) or if they make an ARROW movie, you TOTALLY have The Glades, along with East Liberty and various other parts)...
BUT they seem to forget HOW distinctive Pittsburgh is (like, did *ANYONE* believe they shot the dark knight rises anyplace OTHER than Pittsburgh. Gotham City? please lol) and how you can't really not acknowledge it, etc.
but i'm actually going to check this out. I dig Harrelson, Bale, Affleck and I like Scott Cooper as a director. of course, the rest of the cast too...
and I think i'm doing a *dark and depraved revenge thriller" double feature with this and Oldboy.

>THE LOW DWELLER and gave us this happy ending bs was >disappointing. >
I gotta read the OG screenplay
>The cast was great, even Zoe for what limited time she had on >the screen.
Too bad they're wasted here.
> >but otherwise, yea, this is an HBO viewing/Netflix rental. > >and with all the "dark genre" type releases this year: STOKER, >ONLY GOD FORGIVES, OLDBOY, PRISONERS, and OUT THE FURNACE... > >PRISONERS is the only one that's done relatively well.
Cause Prisoners was the only one executed well.
> >I guess folk weren't in the mood for "darkness" and revenge >type thrillers this year...
If they were done better, than yea I think these films would've been a bigger hit.

..solid cast with great performances all around.
still, it appears they left a lot on the table in regards to the plot. on top of that, this film received almost NO press. looks like they missed out on what could've been an incredible story had they taken the time to truly flesh out this screenplay.

um the screenplay *WAS* fleshed out...in the original version called THE LOW DWELLER...
Scott Cooper got his hands on it, and cut out ALL the charater development.
the two screenplays (the original writer, Brad Ingelsby got a co-writer credit, but was magically and conveniently, nowhere to be found in the opening or closing credits...) are so vastly different it's astounding.
and yea, "The Low Dweller" was leaps and bounds better than Out Of The Furnace...
