"World War Z (Forster, 2013)"
Mon Jun-17-13 05:57 PM by bwood

More like World War Yawn. I was bored as fuck niggas. Like to me and a few other people the movie got good once it slowed down in the third act. Shit was action sequence after action sequence except the action ain't really that cool or interesting.

Seriously there were no REAL stakes cause we all knew Brad Pitt would be okay and this nigga is the main driving force of the movie. Like the only shit that was cool was the plane sequence (which in real life that nigga and the solider who was with him would've died).

In the opening credits it says additional music by Muse, and I couldn't tell what the fuck they did in this generic ass score except for that dubstep shit that plays over the credits.

And Jesus what a dull ass Q&A with Marc Forster we had today.

Brad Pitt, Marc Forster, and Paramount are not gonna get their trilogy they wanted out of this.

*EDIT* It was pissing me off that I was wearing 3D glasses. I kept thinking to myself the whole time "Why do I have these big, clunky glasses over my fucking face for something that should not be in 3D in the first place?".

Oh, like in..... literally every movie?

When does Crooz, Smith, Willis, Stallone, Rock, etc ever die?

The star, the main character, the *hero* is ALWAYS ok, with rare exception.

It's like people are determined to prove how shitty most film criticism is this summer.

I can understand not knowing the budget because, as it mentioned in the article, more often than not the producers shield the director from that...but dude having no sense of what others thought and essentially saying 'I thought everything was fine' while everyone else continues to state how many issues there were either indicates that he'a bullshitting or he's completely out of touch with his cast and crew.

Though definitely highlighting what their thinking is, I thought everything about that scene was pure Israeli propaganda. The bs history lesson/justification given by the Mossad agent for Israeli insecurity and defensiveness (offensiveness). Israel spending "a thousand years" building a wall to keep "zombies" out, but deciding to be nice people and let everyone they can in who is unaffected (yeah right), only to have the wall breached because of amplified Palestinian singing. Then IDF Girl being around to give Lane his epiphany moment and save him soon after.

...and then when Lane said something like, "I need the worst most outrageous disease out there" and then CUT TO DARK SKINNED BLACK MALE with locs smashin' himself against the window. Other than his bugged out eyes, he doesn't appear to have any of the dead looking pale skin of the other zombies, he just looks like a very enraged Black male in a lab coat. The audience laughed, I didn't.

All of the above made me smh.

The zombie trapped in the lab.

Who were the ones singing? My friend thought they were Muslims which made it kind of a fucked up moment. The jews create a paradise/salvation and then the Muslims arrive and fuck it up.

It was Muslims singing that drew the zombies. They showed the Palestinian flag and then a Muslim woman grabbing a microphone and start the crowd singing.

Just boring.

It was a very episodic type script which I didn't mind but you knew that pretty much everyone Brad Pitt came upon was doomed and you barely knew them to really care about it.

Marc Forster continues to be the worst at filming action sequences. The lack of established geography is always an issue. I mean, a simple stairwell chase was impossible to figure out who was where or how far behind them the zombies were.

What disease did the guy with the gimpy leg have?

I have to say that Lindleof's final act was the best part about the film although even there there were some missed opportunities.

A minor quibble but I thought it was funny that Brad Pitt basically didn't convey much of anything to the people back at the ship. He was making all of these findings and when he got on the phone with the guy, he said, "No time to explain."

There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with the movie, it just didn't do a good job with anything either.

it felt like I was watching versions of each of the screenwriters who wrote a version of this film in the final product.

the movie didn't really seem to know WHAT it wanted to be: dude with a problem, disaster movie, zombie apocalypse movie, etc.

it was all over the map and didn't get close to touching any of those.

no character development, if i'm supposed to ride with Gerry, then he should have been developed enough that I wanted to. how was he qualified to be the expert on this? WHY is he an expert on this?

and, clearly this was most definitely due to everyone having their hands on this, but how does Gerry go from a man protecting his family to finding patient zero to being a zombie killer warrior in one movie?

like, none of that made sense.

there were some missed opportunities to make this a better movie....

the B story with the family and the mental illness type affects of the zombie apocalypse (that was in the book I believe) was intriguing as hell but it wasn't developed enough.

the family in general *SHOULD* have been the B story but clearly was on the cutting room floor.

wasted opportunities for such a solid cast...

Brad and everyone else deserved BETTER.

And damn, why is Marc Forster constantly getting directing jobs and this motherfucker can't direct and action sequence to save his life? I mean, Paramount and Brad didn't see Quantum of Solace? Like, AT ALL? y'all must have been caught up in Billy Bob Thornton digging out Halle Berry from the back part of his reel...smh

for all the drama surrounding this film, they could have come with a BETTER end product than THIS.

No surprise that 51% of ticket sales for it this weekend were to women, as they really did manage to make "Brad Pitt fights to save his family" the heart of this during the first act, which I thought worked really well. The film got less interesting once the family was tucked away on the boat, but then it got engaging once more once the plane sequence hit (Lord, Lindelof saved the fuck outta this-- that original ending sounds awful). Anti-climactic/obvious sequel set-up, but I expected way worse, and both my date and I found it be overall a good flick.

Yeah, it's goofy, and yeah, "but it's nothing like the book!" but who cares, I found it entertaining

Though there's a clear shift from the end of the second act to the new 3rd act stuff by Damon Lindelof and Drew Goddard, which, while enjoyable, kinda let the air out of the balloon so to speak... the pace of it is almost at complete odds with the haunted house movie tone of the first hour and fifteen minutes that preceded it and left us a conclusion that simply petered out... but left plenty of room for a sequel!

I imagine now that, since Paramount is starting discussions about a sequel (eat a dick, Hollywood, it didn't flop), that we may get more of the war elements that apparently were a big part of the book (I haven't read it yet)...

I had a good time.

Then they showed the machine's logo as all the cans poured out of it.

I mean, I still enjoyed the movie without question. Just a hilarious moment.

I could also probably point to the scene in the apartment where dude offers Brad Pitt a "cerveza" in the middle of the zombie apocalypse and Brad gladly accepts a Budweiser, label out, as well. Nothing helps you beat the zombie apocalypse like an ice-cold Budweiser.

But since this is now and has been for a while pretty standard practice in big budget film (I remember Iron Man chomping down on his Whopper after returning from the Middle East), it doesn't inhibit my enjoyment at all. Just gets a laugh.

the name Pepsi wasn't on the can...and I remember thinking that's odd and my boy was with me and he said that it cost more money for placement like that so I assume either Pepsi didn't want to pay for their image to be used right then OR the movie opted not to have that direct placement.

but he does go to a pepsi machine, gets a soda and it's just a blue can...it's not even a pepsi can, just a blue can.

It was odd how the can seemed generic. Maybe Brad Pitt would allow the product placement in the film but didn't want to be cheesing with the logo out.

it wasn't too long, and while each segment was different, they were all exciting.

the movie got straight to the action, did'nt spend a ton of time familiarizing us w/ pre-zombie life for the characters, and kept the pac up through the entire flick.

So many action flicks are bloated nowadays, I couldn't believe they brought in a film about the end of the world under 2 hours and chock full of action and tension.

It was also astonishingly low on exposition, which I was grateful for.

>That's on them not the film

basically. I mean, you didn't see the post in GOTR when Karl whined about it?

I said it then and I said it not.

For anyone to expect GORE and a HARD R rating for this movie, you should feel bad and feel stupid.

NO way they were going there...PERIOD.

PG-13? and you expect walking dead type kills? man please.

that's about as bad as folk trying to debate whether or not 28 Days Later is a zombie movie but will claim the RESIDENT EVIL franchise when that's basically the same damn principal (virus turns folk into zombies) SMH

Regardless of whether or not we should have expected said problem. If a mistake is made (not aiming/allowing for an R), then it is perfectly okay to point it out. I don't get the meta-crtitcism thing sometimes

Read the book a few times since it first came out and was disappointed at first that the movie wouldn't be following it.

Maybe that was for the best because the book would do better as a TV mini series then a theatrical release.

Its a pg-13 zombie movie though. I was entertained. Dunno who expected anything else than what we got.

-refueling the plane at night. They couldn't have waited a few hours?
-going to the plane on creaky bikes when the fueling truck gets there before they do
-the Captain not being protected when he has to fuel himself

I dunno, nothing that really outrageous but the whole thing was about as smoothly executed as the Lakers' season. Gotta give props to James Badge Dale though, dude had another really good turn (he was the best thing in Flight IMHO). Hopefully he gets meatier roles soon.

Otherwise a decent effort, despite some very underwhelmingly filmed action scenes. I liked that the jump-off happened very quickly.

I'd probably rather move at night to be honest. Most zombie lore they have enhanced vision and hearing so moving under the cover of night would be the best way to remain in the shadows and unseen.

>-going to the plane on creaky bikes when the fueling truck
>gets there before they do

This was just stupid. On foot would be a little slower maybe but those squeaky ass bikes were dumb. Also not putting his phone on vibrate lol.

The action sequences. I really, really would love directors to stop doing frantic, shaky camera shots to avoid having actual compelling scenes.

It just felt bleh, the whole time.

Also, on the zombies. People in the theater were laughing at them. The clicking teeth, and twitching, yeah people just laughed.

Shit should have just gone R, had it still camera, and let it be brutal.

Why didn't they get into the difference in time it took for folk to go zombie? Ol boy in Philly took 12 sec, Korea was like 5 min, and the Dr. who got bit lasted what seemed to be a few hours.

Why did they just abandon the search for patient zero?

How did cutting ol girls hand off save her?

I think this was a flaw. I don't remember the doctor.

>Why did they just abandon the search for patient zero?

Pitt is told that a field doctor came back infected. He asked where the records were showing where the doctor had gone, I think, and was directed to what appeared to be some file cabinets that were blown to pieces. At that point, he gives up the patient zero search.

>How did cutting ol girls hand off save her?

I guess the argument is if the infected body part gets cuts off before blood circulating through it can infect the rest of the body, the infection stops. Pitt patching up her severed arm without any formal medical training was pure poppycock, though (Walking Dead introduced us to the idea of chopping off infected body parts before people zombify, I think).

>How'd that zombie get on the plane?

I guess we're supposed to assume that he climbed up the landing gear. That doesn't explain how he got an elevator to work to take him from the cargo hold to the passenger area. Biggest plot hole in the film.

They also forgot to have Pitt or his lady friend use the oxygen masks when the air was sucking out of the plane. How could they breathe without them? Sigh.

what? this wasn't a flaw it was part of the story. it suggested the disease was changing as it movedalong, which would help them find patient zero. I'm not saying it makes sense, but it was more than explained, it was actually the whole point.

That's not for a sequel at all.

no, he's still trying to find patient zero when he goes to israel. the agent there explains to him it's impossible

The stewardess turned on the elevator so she could take the pillows or whatever down.

I coulda sworn they did, even if they didn't, it's not more ridiculous than them being the two survivors of the crash

I understand that, I just wish they would have spent more time on that. Instead they just jump to WHO and go to inject a virus in yourself.

Yeah, but that seemed to be speculation, and he just gave up. I think the writers got lazy.

The Dr. is the field Dr. mentioned in Korea, he got bitten out in the field but made it back to the base and was treating patients there prior to going zombie.

Yeah, I guess, I forgot about that scene.

But the timing threw me off, it wasn't an instant chop off the hand, it goes back to my time to convert argument. If ol boy in Philly was 11-12 seconds that's a fast moving virus not slow enough for you to react by removing a body part.

regarding the chopping off limbs. I would assume that virus that gets into the main bloodstream via main artery is alot quicker acting than flesh would that doesn't penetrate too deep. I would assume has to do with blood delivery. Thus making sense to me that she was ok after losing an arm.

The pacing of the action was terrific. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

I didn't even notice that it was PG-13 until you all mentioned it. I found this movie to be scarier than alot of R rated zombie movies mainly because the blueprint for this movie was Contagion not zombie flics.

BTW, Contagion is waay scarier than most zombie movies because you feel like it could really happen.

The real feat and ambition of the movie though was showing a zombie outbreak on a global level. That I thought made it epic.

Usually I feel cheated when I movie is designed to set up a sequel but in this case I can't wait to see more movies in the franchise.

got over the fact that it's nothing like the book long before it was released. what i saw i'm told is an uncut director's cut so maybe it was better than the theatrical release (i have no clue) but i enjoyed the movie and feel like if they wanted to go the route of making sequels that incorporate some of the stories people loved in the book they could (with fast zombies of course)...the ending kind of left it open for something like that with the full-on war still going on. either way i thought it was a good movie and i guess all the reshoots and blown budget were worth it.
