we have a boring 1960 split-level. The main floor is decorated in what you might call eclectic rustic - mostly famhousey-looking antiques. We redid the kichen cabinets, appliances and counters about two years back, and it is somewhat sleeker but still simple, but the printed-brick-patterned linoleum floor still didn't go too well with the whole vibe.

(As a dad, you know linoleum is great even when ugly b/c your kids can spill whatever the hell they want and it's easy to clean.)

So my wife was determined to get the final stages of the kitchen done... custom tile backsplash (tiles not here yet) and a wood floor. She's been really into repurposing old stuff - she's been great at using Craigslist and Freecycle to sell or give away stuff we're getting rid of. It occasionally becomes a pain in my ass (ie, reusing old chair spindles to build a scratch ladder for the chicken coop, which was waaaaaaaay harder than buying new dowels for rungs would have been) but this was a great call. So she had her heart set on salvaged wood and found someone to sell it to her.

Fortunately she had a carpenter she knows put it in, so all I have had to do is sand, stain and topcoat it.

Wood appears to be a mix, possibly cedar and pine. Definitely distressed - knotholes, wormholes, etc. I patched some and even got plug cutters for some of the bigger holes.

http://s79.photobucket.com/user/lonesome_d/media/kitchenfloor_zps0d4a4026.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0

That's right after the first coat of poly. Have three done now, one more to go. (Two to three is sufficient for most uses, but as this is soft wood and in a high-traffic area with high probablility of large quantities of liquids spilling onto it.... safer is better.)

It was cool. Probably the most interesting villain set-up he's been given so far, though I found the Extremis zombies to be pretty cheesy in terms of how they looked and acted. I dug it but don't quite get the "Best Marvel movie yet!" hype... I don't think it's even my favorite of the Iron Man flicks.

Stuff I liked:

- Tony's PTSD and how the movie played off the continuity they're *still* building with these movies

- The Mandarin twist. They tipped their hand kinda early but it was still fun to watch it play out

- Tony's lack of a secret identity hurting him, but also helping him. We hear a lot about the former but it was cool exploring the latter.

- Tony on his low-budget James Bond shit. In Avengers, Cap asks him what he is without the suit. Here's where we find out.

Cool shit. Star Trek 2 was better tho

1) Darth Vader & the Lost Command: A few months back there was some talk about licensed properties and whether we read them. General consensus was 'if the story is good...' This story was not good. D.

2) An Enchantment (Durieux, Louvre editions): An absolutely beautiful book... if you have ever felt at home in a museum, or been completely and utterly charmed by a woman, this book will bring it all back to you. $5 to anyone who can read this without thinking about that one girl from tat crazy night way back when and what might have happened to her. Touches on plenty of other themes (Power, sobriety, restraint, responsibility) but never once fails to delight. A++++

There was a third one I got from the library but it's complete escaping me right now as to what it was. Probably means it was okay, not particularly good or bad.

meaning yes, there was a new LXG title, and yes, I forgot what it was two days after I'd read it.

Which I guess means that the whole LXG thing has lost some of its charm for me... I really liked 1969 for all the pop culture, but the one after that, meh. This one takes place in the '20s and features a young Nemo II on a trans-Antarctic expedition. Weird things ensue.

I guess I give it a B, because it's not like it was bad or anything, it just no longer feels particularly fresh to me. But maybe that's just b/c I was pooped from being up late staining the damn floor.

I liked them, but they haven't done what the others have. I actually was not a fan of 1969, maybe even more so than 2009. Volumes I, II, Black Dossier, and 1910 are all top notch. I still will read them all though.

And in hindsight, I'm not sure that LoEG was ever a huge favorite to begin with. I've had some cool discussions about the stuff in the books but the reading experience itself hasn't been great

It was different, sure, but not crazy, YET.

1969, 2009, and Nemo just weren't as good to me. At least when 1910 came out, we got to see some things that were hinted in the others finally, and it updated the survivors accordingly, still close enough to Victorian times to be cool.

I wasn't that big a fan of Black Dossier, but I liked 1910 a lot. I could barely make it through 1969. Didn't bother finishing the Century series.

However, I did like the Nemo one-shot a lot and I'm glad Moore plans on continuing in that vein for the time being.

Fun is the new gritty

aight, after a brief hiatus, it would appear Wednesday is my holy day once again. my time in comics purgatory may have saved me money, but trying to loan trades off my friend just really didn't have the magic of hitting the shop every week.

the other good news? fresh eyes on the rack, no tired old allegiances, opportunity to start fresh with only the books that love me.

any suggestions?

I dunno that my pulls/allegiances have changed much in the past 6 months. I guess my latest additions have been Bravest Warriors and Regular Show, but I'm still feeling them out.

Saga (which just started a brief hiatus)
Hawkeye
Captain America
Archer & Armstrong
Daredevil (extra on fire at the moment)

Picking up that new Manhattan Projects and Thor today for sure. Not sure what else. Miiiiiiight fuck with Superman Unchained. MIGHT.

Hey you like dogs right? Do you like digital comics too? If so check out Kinski by Gabriel Hardman. It's on Comixology for 99 an issue. #2 came out today

yeah, I was on DD. I'm a little miffed at the gap I made for myself on it. I did keep up with Manhattan Projects + Massive. and I think I might switch to a Saga trade reader since I missed some issues, but I dunno, not having weeklies just isn't the same with comics for me.

Hawkeye just started, right? like isn't it due for a trade soon? I might try to jump in that way...

what's up with Archer + Armstrong? haven't heard of that one.

It's like the bizarro version of that diner we went to on our Louisiana trip. I was *hurting* from excessive grubbing and by day 2 I needed a break. So we're at this joint and I order the chef's salad, which turns out to be just a pile of bacon, ham cubes and shredded cheddar cheese. With a side of ranch that came in one of those plastic bottles you usually see used for ketchup. There was a little bit of lettuce at the bottom but it was more for presentation, I think

please, to anyone who loves All-Star Superman, don't make the same mistake as me.

with this aborted Netflix viewing behind me, I think I can safely say that All-Star Superman is one of those special comics that transcends to the level where you just CAN'T adapt it. it's a comic. it HAS to be a comic. it should ALWAYS be a comic.

the voice-acting, the bootleg art, the disjointing story pacing outside of the issue format ... this one will belong to Morrison + Quitely forever methinks

28. "Proposal: The Re-Readers Club"
In response to Reply # 0

Buck's post about stuff from Manhattan Projects got me to thinking. New God clearly puts a lot of stuff into issues that don't pay off until later. his work almost requires annotations or a good crew to read with and catch all the coolness.

hey, i know a good crew!!

so, is anyone interested in a sort of comics book club? the idea would be that we re-read stuff at a relatively quick pace (i'd say 2 issues per week) and then talk about it in this thread, so that we can draw out all the cool stuff. we could open it up to people who haven't read the books before, but they would have to know that all spoilers are fair game. if i see something in MP 2 that foreshadows something in MP 12, I want to be able to talk about it.

way i see it, just like a book club, we take turns picking books to re-read. because it's my idea, we're clearly starting with Manhattan Projects 1-12. all books would be fair game, but i would recommend books that reward rereading, like works by New God, Old God, Ellis, whatever.

Reply below if you're interested and you think you'd have the time, or if you have any questions. if there's sufficient interest, i'll organize.

And I think 2 issues per week is reasonable even on a somewhat busy schedule.

And MP is a great choice. That flashback scene this week made me feel like I wasn't really paying attention.

And since it's a RE-readers club (though I'm sure we'd welcome first timers as well), maybe prior to diving in we could share what we liked about the story the first time around, what got stuck in our craw, what we didn't get, etc. You know, kinda have a loose agenda for things to look out for when reading and points to address later

I might cherry pick what else I hop in on based on what the title is.

but yeah, I've peeked into the old issues a couple times with Manhattan Projects already and there is CLEARLY something with the blue + red, in particular turning around Albert + Albrecht if I recall...

Nipped from the Young Adults gn section at the library and turned out to be a nice surprise... horror without being horrible, a little romance, a little Old West racism, a little romance. Backdrop is the age of railroad expansion; evil corporate boss hires a kid to clear out a town that's already been mostly cleared out, but there's some shady shit going down, a hot girl, her crazy miner daddy, some maybe ghosts, a mysterious plague. Good stuff all the way around. A

one of the better mash-ups I've read, and certainly the best #1 I've read in a while. Not only a gorilla with a gun, also a Western, also a war comic, also sci-fi with a special (though possibly unintentional) nod to Matz's 'Cyclops' premise, and obvious though vague underlying meta tensions.

And I'm not even finished it yet.

A+++++++ and while I was reluctant to pick up a $3.99 title, am very glad I did and would encourage all of you to do the same.
