"Ender's Game (Hood, 2013)"

Looks dope.

I know they've been trying to get this book made into a movie for YEARS. It remains to be seen if it was worth the effort. Mind you I never read this shit (and probably won't).

then how is it still his 'game?' That's the premise of the book.

But this is a torrent-only for me to see the battle room (which I loved as a kid) - I am not giving that hatemonger a dollar.

assuming this follows the book, that final shot is essentially the climax of the movie, 20 minutes tops before it's all over.

Or they completely botched it, in which case they should've just gone with the Bean saga so no one would care as much and they could still tell the Ender story from the sideline without having to worry about the movie being a success and figuring out how to tackle all the Space China OCD mysticism of the rest of Ender's saga.

hahahaha. that was xenogenesis, right? speaker for the dead, however, is one of my favorite books ever. absolutely beautiful book. and a complete 180 from ender's game.

i'd like to see that made into a movie, but it's completely different. ppl htat dig the first one wouldn't watch it.

but if they fuck up the whole story (as the trailer implies they could) it'll be a moot point, anyway.

and really shitty to people who like speaker.

i need to reread ender's game and the novella though. i think i've convinced myself that the original incarnation was terrible and it only halfway redeemed itself because he rearranged the narrative for the novel while writing speaker for the dead.

i realize for some people identifying with ender might be the appeal of the book, especially reading it as an adolescent. but the only thing that saves it from being YA objectivism is that we get to the very end (and past the end) and ender (and ender's society) has to grow up and deal with guilt and consequences.

speaker for the dead and ender's shadow are easily card's best books because they have this kernel to write around, and we're not living in that bubble of marysue/messianic ender.

I don't think they'll do the whole Speaker stream tho... too heady and not cowboy enough.

honestly I don't see the appeal to anybody who hasn't read the books tho.. shit looks like starship troopers without the comedy.

I don't know why, it's always been a cool title to me. I read the book because Hideo Kojima kept talking about how much it inspired his concepts for Zone of the Enders - they didn't turn out to be very similar, but just the words "Ender's Game" told a 13 year old me I HAD to find out what that was about.

20. "Lionsgate Releases Statement Regarding Ender's Game *swipe*"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=106422

In response to the recent examination of Ender's Game and its relationship to the book's author Orson Scott Card, Lionsgate has released the following statement on behalf of the film:

“As proud longtime supporters of the LGBT community, champions of films ranging from GODS AND MONSTERS to THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and a Company that is proud to have recognized same-sex unions and domestic partnerships within its employee benefits policies for many years, we obviously do not agree with the personal views of Orson Scott Card and those of the National Organization for Marriage. However, they are completely irrelevant to a discussion of ENDER’S GAME. The simple fact is that neither the underlying book nor the film itself reflect these views in any way, shape or form. On the contrary, the film not only transports viewers to an entertaining and action-filled world, but it does so with positive and inspiring characters who ultimately deliver an ennobling and life-affirming message. Lionsgate will continue its longstanding commitment to the LGBT community by exploring new ways we can support LGBT causes and, as part of this ongoing process, will host a benefit premiere for ENDER’S GAME.”

Directed by Gavin Hood, Ender's Game stars Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Viola Davis, Nonso Anozie, Stevie Ray Dillmore, Andrea Powell, Moises Arias, Conor Carroll, Aramis Knight, Brandon Soo hoo, Jimmy "Jax" Pinchak, Suraj Parthasarathy and Khylin Rhambo. The movie hits theaters and IMAX on November 1.

it dramatically raised awareness that OSC is a raging homophobe and bigot.

he'll likely still get work because money talks, but he no longer gets to go around with his hateful politics hidden from -wider- public view.

Also we can now add racism in:

"Obama will put a thin veneer of training and military structure on urban gangs, and send them out to channel their violence against Obama’s enemies.”

boycott is when people avoid the movie in a few months, but i suspect most people are talking about "don't see it" wouldn't have seen it.

that stoli boycott more likley to affect a bottom line.

>suspect most people are talking about "don't see it" wouldn't

I'd actually known about the movie being in production for over five years and the first four i was really waiting for it to come because I couldn't wait to see how they'd adapt it. Soon as I started hearing about this while not necessarily surprised, it completely deflated any interest I have in the man. I'm not forming a group or anything like that to go picket, but I actively haven't watched a single trailer and will definitely not see it in the theaters in protest. Right now I don't have a slight interest i n it at all, that may change over time, but my general opinion of him and supporting his work will not.

if people want to boycott, don't BUY Card's books. you want to hit him where it counts...

Card gets ZERO money from whatever profits Ender's Game The Movie makes because the movie rights Card had expired years ago and he never reupped them, etc.

BUT, Card is still making money off of his BOOKS.

If people really want to protest and boycott him, don't buy his books.

boycotting this movie is ridiculous because a) Card didn't make the movie b) Card didn't fund the movie to make it and c) Card didn't help with adapting his book to becoming a movie.

however, I think the movie will disappoint at the box office more due to general apathy than caring about Card's ideals.

Like yo how you gonna lie to little ass kids like that? And now that little niglet has to bear the weight and guilt of that for the rest of his life.

Damn damn damn James...

But yo had this been done by a better director, I think the pacing and performances would've been a lot stronger. Same thing with the editing choices that were made. Can't wait to peep this again on Blu-ray and/or Netflix.

Well worth a matinee. Not full price though.

Too long to swipe, but it's a good read. I'm not sure it'll convince me to see the movie (and I say that as someone who loved the book after reading it about 25 years ago), but it's food for thought.

it is a long but solid read...

though I do agree with folk that if they want to protest Card because of his views, HIT HIM IN HIS POCKETS, i.e. don't buy his book.

that's where he's making his money...not the movie. he won't make a dime off the movie.

if people are really serious about boycotting, stop buying his books. plain and simple.

Very well written, thoughtful, nuanced. I love that the writer is thoroughly critical of Card but not willing to reject his work or forsake the man himself. The parallels between the experiences of Mormons and Muslims in the U.S. were new to me and very striking. Thanks for the link.

The pacing was a serious issue early on.
They did nothing to establish the relationship with his sister as being so important to him. This dude didn't try to contact anyone else? No, "Hey mom. How are you. I'm good, I've been emailing Valentine and she hasn't responded, everything ok?"
And then as he moved from team to team... it was too easy for him. He only needed one deed to win the whole team over to his side. Salladhor Saan told him, "I'll never salute you" and then after like 2 more on screen appearances is saluting him.

So, in short I think it would've worked better as a tv series where they could better show Ender's progression from loser to leader.

The last third, worked better for me.

That ant queen probably should've telepathically connected with someone who had more decision making power than Ender though... she might've saved her people.

...everyone other than Ender seemed really one note...i haven't read the books, but it seemed like they had alot to fit into one movie and it showed...things moved at a really simplified pace for Ender, but again, overall i liked the movie... i liked how straight to the point the movie was, but i agree that we could have gotten more of the dynamics the kid have to deal with in such an environment with a better script....

and anyone talking about Ford phoning it in now is late to the party, dude's been hamming it up for a long time now, and i ain't mad at him....

my whole relationship with literature / reading pretty much begins with the day I took Ender's Game home from the bookstore. I'm rarely one to take hard stances in "book v. film" type debates (both are their own medium, for better or worse) but this is the ONE story where I was really, really nervous about what a studio might do to it...

that said, I really, really liked the movie. it was just good. told the story, stayed true to the core themes, looked good, good performances, maybe I'm too sentimental but the boyhood themes of identity + acceptance got me tearing up in spots, too.

hard to say how the movie would play for someone who hasn't read the book (multiple times...) because some of characters' motivations and emotional struggles were known to me regardless of performance or staging, but it worked on me as a visual story, sooo...

anyway -- anyone skipping this because of Card's politics is just cheating themselves. separate the art from the creator. it's a great story. it's a good movie. see it when you get the chance.

actually the movie had a bit more of a hard task in creating concrete visuals for the action. my memory of the book is that it discusses tactics in a much more conceptual way, discussing things like spatial concerns and the amount of sacrifice necessary for victory. because the entire story hinges on the fact that Ender is totally unaware he's doing anything besides a simulation until the very end, the actual nuts + bolts of how the attacking forces are made up is left unexplored.

plus the real twist isn't supposed to be his realization that he was sacrificing human lives, it's that he committed genocide while thinking it was all a game. I definitely felt like that point was a bit more muted in the movie, because it was just too easy to empathize and root for the human forces and make an "other" of the bugs. that's precisely the allegory of the story, that we're actually supposed to care for the bugs, but I feel like they left out a bit of the emotional bonding necessary to really make the point to the extent the book did.
