There was some "stinging social commentary" in it, mainly aimed at extreme right wingers, but it wasn't biting enough and got overshadowed by the need for the movie to be a mindless, violent home invasion "thriller" that wasn't very thrilling, sorry
This movie was better when it was directed by David Fincher and starred Jodie Foster and Forest Whitaker and Jared Leto in cornrows and a young Kristen Stewart as a diabetic
And the thing is, we didn't even need the pitched idea of seeing how the family tries to make it through the streets to get back home. Save that shit for the sequel(s). This could have worked just fine as-is, but the big problem is that Ethan Hawke is set up to be quite the dick; are we supposed to be sad when he gets the fatal shank near the end? Because his too on-the-nose lines about being #1 and achieving for his family, etc., made it all too easy for me to hope he got killed off... either he's a delusional douchebag who fails to adequately prepare to defend his family - which to me results in his family getting killed off - or he's a good guy who wants to protect his family and discovers too late that the product he's selling is faulty and is forced to resort to extreme measures to protect his loved ones... to me, the latter character is more interesting, especially if he's bought into this shit that the New Founding Fathers has been selling the people... or what if he finds out that the stats lie, and that crime and unemployment is actually the same as it was before The Purge was brought into law and tries to get the truth out... yeah, I know, that might be a different movie, but it's still infinitely more interesting to me to see THAT particular character... it was just hard to care about this character as he was drawn up...
Nevertheless, this is a great idea, and I can certainly see sequels where we do go to different cities and watch families try to survive the night... if that's the direction they want to go in...
And btw, since we have so many bean counters here, you guys might want to start paying attention to the resume of producer Jason Blum... like almost all of the films he's produced (like the Paranormal Activity series, Insidious, Sinister, etc), this one had a small budget ($3 million) and is going to make a hell of a profit, thus ensuring more installments... point is, almost everything this dude puts his name on is either a hit or seems to at least turn a hefty profit...
