It's way more Valhalla Rising than Drive. That is to say, very little dialogue, tons of sensory nightmarish visuals, very little point other than "the experience of going through it," etc.

I liked a lot about it. Refn's use of music, sound, and lighting are top drawer. Gosling does nothing here really, but Kristin Scott Thomas is gloriously campy and the dude who's the bad guy is darkly hilarious. I really like how surreal Refn makes the film.

But again, it's pretty vacuous in terms of actual character development. It's not about the people in it, it's about the nightmare of the circumstances. Refn described it in a pre-screening interview as an acid trip whereas Drive was really good coke. Seems more or less accurate to me.

People who hated Drive will HAAAAATE this. People who liked Drive will likely find themselves conflicted over this film's good and bad, as I am.

It's incredibly surreal and that aspect of it more or less worked for me too. You really can't get bogged down with reality with a movie like this. IMO, the best way to approach it is to try to turn off your mind and plug into its frequency

Refn's comments make sense, and if he wants to say it's supposed to be like an acid trip, that's fine. The problem I think for a lot of people is that it really does feel extremely pretentious. Some people might not care about that. But, it seems to take itself incredibly seriously and I think as it goes on and on it sort of unknowingly devolves into self-parody.

Still, from a technical perspective, holy shit. It looks fucking glorious. Every shot is framed exquisitely. The colors are vibrant and put to incredible use. It's very crisply edited. I also loved how the score drifted back and fourth from organic strings to electronic synthesizers. It was just one of many elements of contrast in the film (along with the strong contrast between blue and red, night and day, surrealism and naturalism, violence and serenity, etc.) which I guess is supposed to underscore Gosling's internal conflict. Too bad the whole is less than the sum of its parts, but I think it might be the best looking film I've seen this year.

I think it's a personal movie. I think it's Refn trying to manifest some dark corner of his psyche on the screen. I think it has a lot to do with sexual anxieties and frustrations. I also think it could have been a short film - like 45-55 minutes - and it wouldn't have lost a whole lot.

Still interested in seeing what Refn does next. If he can put his technical virtuosity to better use next time, look out.

Alright. It's morally bankrupt. It makes you feel icky. It's kinda gross. Kristin Scott Thomas plays a really good cunt mother ("I'm sure he had his reasons" I need a fucking shower) and seems like the only lively one in the cast. Gosling is just...there.

Vithaya Pansringarm as Lieutenant Chang was...Jury is still out on him. Complete badass. And with those qualities, the jury was still out.

I need some dialogue in these flicks, man. Staring at the camera and standing in the frame gets a bit old.

The film is gorgeous, however.

Overall, it's average. Menacing imagery. Great visuals. All that shit. Still doesn't make me like the other half of the film. Some substance.

But when it doesn't have a lot of substance, you're left up to a bunch of intepretation, which I've been doing since I saw it Saturday.

Shout out to Cliff Martinez, btw.

i'm out.

in spite of some wonderfully framed shots, it is forgettable imo.
very much style over substance.

i felt the exact same way about Drive, though I think this was more artfully done and looked better.

..beautiful cinematography

a very simple script, with incredibly complex characters. stimulating stillness, with an almost playfully impulsive score.

critics have complained about the lack of dialogue, but i'm compelled to challenge that notion. while the script doesn't call for much verbal interaction, the real dialogue plays out visually. each cast member is shown in several long shots that leave them vulnerable, yet riveting in silent communication.

eyes never lie.

the question is, are you aware?

this is a modern, stylistic approach to "less is more."

Refn is a study of extremes. He gets so much into whatever badassry he wants to paint, that he forgets that he has an audience who are watching too. The concept of revenge is great, and at some point in the movie, you are feeling the need for punishment upon some of the characters. He then muddles it up by going too far with everything, and it becomes as though you are stuck in an avant garde art museum in which some of the art is very shitty, and you wonder if the talented artist can see it too. The only persons who come out looking good in this, is the mother, and the cop. They are badly flawed. The rest of the characters were either floating through, or badly used to make points that were unnecessary.

If I were a studio chief, I will not give Refn money to make another movie without restraint, or a very detailed contract.

All that said, dug the score....and some of the violence is great...just a stupid ass waste of time movie. Gosling got a free check for this one.

Refn went reductive here and the outcome was more banal than immersive. I didn't hate it, but it's not that effective even as a style exercise.

32. "One odd redemption story that didn't quite come together."

The score and cinematography are magnificent

And, coming on the heels of Drive, it's fascinating that Ryan Gosling is NOT the "hero" of the piece

No, he's not - it's Chang. Chang is judge, jury and executioner, the avenging angel who sets things right morally, more or less.

Gosling's seeking redemption of some sort: he's helping to run a drug ring which it's implied is run by his mother, whom it is implied he and his brother had some sort of incestuous relationship with, which also in the past included him murdering his father. And so he doesn't act when his brother is murdered after raping a young girl and his uncouth mother demands revenge, because of all of that baggage, baggage that he's desperate to get rid of.

And to me, that's the problem: so much is alluded to, so much is implied, that there's barely anything to hang our hats on as viewers, save the pretty red-tinged pictures, Chang's slow Angel of Death shuffle/karaoke stylings, Gosling's sad face, and Cliff Martinez's great-as-usual music.

Oh, and we also got Kristen Scott Thomas aka Mary Sharon, chewing all of the scenery and giving the movie the life that it sorely needs.

It's kinda odd that, for a film that was so interested in being obtuse for long stretches, we saw a lot of hands, arms and fists, which were the most blatant phallic symbols I've seen in a film in quite some time.

Anyway, I appreciated the odd, slow-burn-in-hell pace but wondered at times if it was only done just to stretch the run time to 90 minutes.

I certainly wasn't expecting an action romp from Refn, nor was I expecting every single dot to be connected, but I could have used a longer starter line every now and then in the form of dialogue and/or exposition...

The movie's not terrible, just not terribly cohesive...

Which means I'm probably going to peep it again sometime soon

And hopefully, as was the case with Drive, I'll dig it more than I did upon first viewing

Also, I read the script of this that I downloaded 2 months ago. It's a second draft, and virtually all of the story and dialogue exposition that's in this draft -- which is practically the entire movie -- is gone in the finished product. I said this movie asks you to connect a lot of dots, but was unaware of just how many we're asked to connect until I read this version of the script... but to be fair, a lot of the corny dialogue that was in this draft has been cut as well...

... and the script's MUCH more violent than the finished product, if you can imagine that...

Refn is so great at what he does and how he does it

One of my favorite films of the year

The dedication to Jordowosky made it make even more sense.

I thought Drive was great, but this was just awful.

Even Kristin Scott Thomas trying really hard to steal scenes wasn't strong enough.

Replace her with Melissa Leo and you at least might have had a strong, fitting performance in a weak ass movie.

I guess it was shot well but it was kinda just trying too hard to be artsy and Goddard-ish.

I saw this film about two months ago and for some reason it made me really angry and I get mad every time I hear someone mention it, haha.

I'd have to say this, for me, is the very definition of pretentious filmmaking. The most popular compliment about it is that it "looks" amazing and beautiful - and it does - but, so what?! As a plus point, it's nowhere near enough to make me enjoy a full movie.

It's also made me realise how important it is to have someone to root for in a movie - I don't by any strecth need a clear-cut hero/good guy, but I need to root for someone or root for an actual outcome. This movie is crammed with the most disgusting, horrible, vile characters where I don't 'care' about what happens. I feel like I'm supposed to be buying into Gosling as the hero but on what premise? If anyone's the hero, then it's Chang - at least (as demented as he is) he had a moral code, and frankly eliminating Gosling and his famly was surely a good thing. The absolute beating he gave Gosling made him even more pathetic.

As for the script, you can get away with not huge amounts of talking, that isn't what bothered me, but what irritates me is the five minute vacant staring before and after anyone says anything.

Ok, y'see, my blood's boiling again.
