"White House Down (Emmerich, 2013)"
Sat May-04-13 05:41 PM by ZooTown74

Here's the trailer.
http://www.slashfilm.com/white-house-down-trailer-channing-tatum-plays-die-hard-in-the-white-house/

I'm not sure what the hell is going down in that trailer, although they are really running with the Die Hard in the White House by having Channing Tatum in a wife beater for most of it. I think they played up the ominous angle too much. It'll be opening on the heels of Man of Steel and World War Z and is basically going to need good reviews/word of mouth to push it into July 4th weekend, when Despicable Me 2 and Lone Ranger are opening.

It's being presented as an action movie. Most movies tend to have an element of humor in them. The things I'm finding funny about Foxx are moments where he appears to be acting serious.

Don't get me wrong OHF was fucking stupid. but I didn't feel insulted watching it. Here I felt like they didn't give a fuck about anything. Add to that that action PALES compared to OHF. OHF got my adrenaline pumping at points. Here I just wanted this film to be over halfway through. the only good thing about WHD is Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx are having fun. Jamie Foxx is the least of this film's problems and I don't understand why people would think he would be in the first place. A lot of this had my audience laughing at how absurd it was, even at parts that were supposed to be taken seriously. There's a few shot where Channing Tatum falls through a glass ceiling and you can clearly tell it's a stuntman due to the lingering shots and homie has a completely different face than Channing. And even though Channing's character had more to lose, OHF felt more urgent and the stakes higher. WHD doesn't get there until the end of the movie where they give Channing an 8 minute countdown, which by the way was the longest 8 minutes of cinema history. And for having that summer blockbuster money, the action should've been better than OHF and the CG should've been better, which it was in spots, but other times it looked just as cheesy as OHF. Also, I've never seen a movie in my life where everyone in party called that all the expostion in the first 20 minutes would come back into play later in the film. And the "bad guy" twists are more obvious here than in OHF. And it was pretty fucking obvious in that movie. Also, the bad guys were better in OHF (sorry Jason Clarke. You need to slap the fuck outta your agent for this one).

So yea, run to nearest Redbox or whatever rental shit and get Olympus Has Fallen cause it does this ssssoooooo much better.

Was pleasently surprised to see the military industrial complex called out by name as being villains, although in a lot of places the movie felt formulaic.

The first half of the film is pretty good but then it is a weird mix of serious and comedy, and only the comedy worked. The action scenes started getting boring and the comedy was actually the only thing saving the day (no pun intended, the tour guide became one of the best parts of the film.) This was a good 90 - 100 minute film that ran 131 minutes.

There was a lot of random shit in there, like the one bad guy getting butt hurt because he didn't know that they were going to nuke the Middle East. It almost felt like his character had a purpose in the script that got gutted in the editing room. And the hacker's death was just kind of "Huh?" Was there a scene cut in which the President rejiggered the explosives or something?

I like Jason Clarke but I thought Devil from Justified should have had a bigger role and be the loose cannon who kind of hijacks the mission. I don't know. They introduced all these bad guy characters but none of them were really given enough to matter.

I did appreciate Jason Clarke yelling, "Turn off the alarm" because good lord that shit was annoying.

The final twist will challenge Supes and Lois's kiss as one of the dumbest, most unnecessary endings of the year.

From Channing Tatum yelling about shooting somebody in the kitchen to screaming and Jamie to stop hitting him in the head with a rocket launcher, but the real kicker (no pun)... Jamie Foxx, the US President, kicking somebody in the face repeatedly to get off his Jordans? Um... FAIL.

If you think this is awesome, you will like this movie.

If you think this is lame, you will not like this movie.

Very very simple.

I thought it was hilarious in the trailer. I liked the film.

I can totally see why people wouldn't, and thus wouldn't like the film.

I also called AE but bwood deserves more of the credit. He accurately said it would be a colossal flop. lol AE has only made 58 million domestic and i don't think it has even made 200 million worldwide. It is probably one of the biggest bombs of all time.

Note that I used the word "relatively"...

Lone Ranger cost 100 million more. John Carter cost almost double. White House Down cost 20 million more. After Earth was one of the cheaper action blockbusters made this year.

When it comes to huge blockbusters (especially sci-fi), 130 million is becoming the lower end. "Total Recall" cost about the same as After Earth and made only 9 million more than what AE has made so far. That was a flop but nobody was calling it one of the biggest flop of all time. Shit, Mars Needs Moms cost 20 million more and made less domestically than After Earth made in its opening weekend (and made even less overseas.)

I have no problem calling this a flop but the hyperbole of "one of the biggest flops ever" smacks of either Will hate or focus on bashing the OE/Basagenda.

That's why during pitches, if you can make a point of saying it's gonna cost $30 million or less it's almost likely your movie is gonna be greenlit. Almost. Also, I never said it was the biggest flop ever. I'm saying it's not. I was trying to tell maternalbliss to calm that talk down.

If you pitch a sci-fi blockbuster with WIll Smith and the budget is 130 million, I think most studio execs would be relieved.

with any and every excuse for Will Smith's obvious career decline. Y'all can't except the fact that he's just not the draw he once was. Now i am not a Will hater, maw dude. Despite his limited acting talent the brotha had a good run. He is not in a career lull he is in a decline.

Remember Frank's Will Smith post a while back. i told y'all this was gonna happen.

He will eventually be forced to go back to TV.

I have said that Will's drawing power isn't the same and expected After Earth to be one of the biggest disappointments of the year.

But you said it was one of the biggest bombs of all time. It won't be the biggest bomb this year and it might not be the biggest bomb Sony has this year (since White House Down probably won't do as well overseas.)

Will went from THE A-list star to just another A-list star.

Even I don't remember what post you're talking about, and I made it.

This is now multiple times you've brought up my After Earth defense. I was wrong. It happens, as it also happens to you (example: the last line of your reply).

>He will eventually be forced to go back to TV.

If you think an A-list movie star is actually going to go back to doing TV, then you're insane. One flop does not a decline make. Men In Black 3 was one of his biggest hits worldwide! lol

After Earth's prospects dimmed fairly early for most people. Besides a few holdouts here, most people had it up for Flop of the Year alongside Lone Ranger.

Some guy: White House down kinda sucked.

Basa: YUP AND IT FLOPPED WORSE THAN NIGHT DOGS JOINT! NIGHT DOGS JOINT WASN'T THIS BAD!

Some guy: I don't understand the correlation you're trying to make.

Basa:CISM!

Some guy: I just... I don't know what you're getting at. This is all very confusing.

Basa: Tarantino's a racist. That's what I'm getting at.

Some guy: What in the world does that have to do with the Smith/Shyamalan movie being trash? More importantly, WHAT does it have to do with White House Down?

Basa, with OE chiming in: YOU MAD AS SHIT!!!! U MAD!!!WHY YOU SO MAD?

Some guy: *Blank stare* Uh... Yeah. That's great. I've got a meeting to get to. Look, are you gonna validate my parking or what?

Basa/OE. Right away, Mr. Scorcese. By the way, I'm writing this spec script, and......

Scorcese: I'm not reading that shit.

39. "holy shit was this movie terrible"
In response to Reply # 0

I was able to overlook the horrible acting by Tatum and Fox in the beginning because it was fun. Then James Woods and Jason Clarke came in with horrible acting. Maybe it was the terrible terrible dialogue. Throw in the annoying little girl and it was getting uncomfortable. Action was fine. Over the top but that is what I wanted. Then the ending. Holy shit the ending. That was 1980's level of corny. A little girl is waving the flag I cant do this abort. Wow. I was waiting for a slow clap. Then when you think its over we go to the Scooby Doo mystery solve at the end. Good god what a terrible movie.
