the ending of Sunset was just so perfect the way they set it up with the reporters in the beginning of the movie. i loved how they left the ending open to your imagination and was dependent on which type reporter you were like. perfect.

I preferred in high school the full-blown romanticism of Before Sunrise. The complications presented in Sunset weren't anything I could remotely comprehend at the time.

Now that I'm older and I've given them both another look, I feel far more for Sunset.

I'm sort of wondering even now if I prefer Sunset to Midnight because, well, I'm closer to the age they were in Sunset. I wonder if this is the type of series that as you age, your preference progresses. The closer you are to each respective stage, that's where your preference lies.

Might be wrong tho. Interested to hear what others say about this one, and what age they are.

I really hope they keep making these every 9 years. As they get older these films get better. Hands down the best American trilogy ever.

Potentially feels slightly over-written at film's end, and there's the vague sense that Jesse gets a "pass" for some morally dubious behavior that carries over from the last film, which if I had to nitpick, I could.

Overall, it's the funniest of the bunch, the scariest of the bunch. I still prefer Sunset on the whole, but maybe when I'm 41, I'll prefer this one.

In response to Reply # 27

I feel like Boston's film scene is not popping
the way it should

Maybe I'm just sleeping

I feel like all kinds of indy shit be here for like
8 hours and then BOUNCING

And then be in random theaters in St. Paul Minnesota
for 4 weeks

Don't matter, I might be in NY next week anyway,
catch it then

Two Landmark indie houses that get things consistently a week or two after LA, play for a week, maybe two, then are replaced by the next thing.

Considering the insane amount of young snobby college-age/grad-age kids in DC, you'd think there'd be more than one art house in DC and one in Bethesda. And I NEVER saw young people at the one in Bethesda-- it was entirely composed of the oldest people on the planet.

I guess it's the same for Laemmles in LA too, there are just more of them because maybe there are even more old people. Old people are scarce as shit in NW DC where most of the DC movie theaters are. Maybe only enough young people see indies to support one quasi-late, fast turn-around art house in our nation's capital.

In response to Reply # 29

Kendall Square? Coolidge Corner? I donated to The Brattle last summer and got 8 free passes and haven't used a single one yet. (Leviathan is opening there this weekend though, so I'm going to try to catch that...) I generally think Kendall Square has enough screens that keep shit in rotation for a fair amount of time, but I like the vibe at Coolidge better though...

It's definitely worth doing. It'll make their relationship that much fresher in your mind as you watch the new one.

its fine stand alone

Sunset is overall the better movie.

BUT

Sunrise is a great young people movie.

I saw it right around college age and it hit all the right notes.

I hope Midnight is good too, but I really dig how in both of those movies they captured the periods in life really well.

In response to Reply # 37

they played it on my campus & I was hyped just off seeing Slacker (no idea if I would still like Slacker now but at the time hadn't seen anything quite like it) and of course Dazed & Confused in high school.

It was obviously a lot more subdued, I don't really remember even liking it all that much at 18 years old but maybe I should give it another shot.

Sunrise is why Sunset never really became a priority for me, maybe I need to get on that though because it seems to have re-shaped the way these flicks are viewed altogether. Might check Sunset tonight then peep this over the weekend.

lots of talking, lots of interesting convos that ultimately go nowhere. enjoyed it for what it was. haven't seen the first two, but just bumped them to the top of my netflix queue. i like the idea of revisiting a relationship every ten years or so. they're gonna run out of titles though.

Why the fuck are you even commenting?

The whole point is how a relationship evolves

You should have said that first

To grow with the characters, to watch them age.

It'd be like reading a random few chapters from the middle of some epic book. You're likely to give way less of a shit.

the movie works on its own. it would work if the first two movies didn't exist. prior knowledge may enhance it-- i guess i'll find out-- but it's not required at all.

good to know. thanks for clearing that up. also, i said i enjoyed it and it inspired me to watch the first two movies, so wash the sand off your ovaries, take tarantino's dick out of your mouth, and relax.

No, they aren't

He can call it whatever he wants

He can switch it to "After ___"

So

Yeah, you just making shit up

Of course they can stand on their own

you said conversations "go nowhere"

That's kinda not the point of these movies,
that criticism shows that you don't know wtf
you talking about

don't get me wrong....you don't have to like the
movies.

Instead of talking shit about what are EASILY some of the best American films of the last 20 years you should be trying to figure out why you can't seem to see these films for what they are.

Here's a hint. It's not a problem with the films. IT'S A PROBLEM WITH YOU. You're getting all testy and angry and shit and people are just trying to give you some insight on the shit and you're foaming at the mouth. Chill out man. There are plenty of things for you to hate on for no reason but this shouldn't be one of them.

You clearly don't understand why the film is relevant and you readily admit you haven't even seen the other films. You COULD watch this one as a one off......but that's not the fuckin point of the films. It's meant to be watched in order so you can see the relationship grow. If someone met you now and didn't know shit about you they may just think you're a self absorbed asshole....and judging by these post they may be right.

First Half: B-

Second Half: A++

Good, lord.

Haven't seen an on screen relationship like that
in a film before

Lots of subtleties and nuances man...about how
the characters do and don't grow/change

Shit is really remarkable

First of all there ain't much romance.

2 once adventurous people have turned into a typical sitcom couple. Jesse and Celine have fallen victim to the battle of the sexes program. Gee, what a shame.

Enjoyed the first half of the film way better than the second. I loved those scenes at the villa with Patrick and the other souples.

The first two were great but not this one.

Grade B

I loved the first two. This one had potential, but the last twenty minutes didn't really go anywhere.

The last two ended so perfectly.

For most of the movie this one was like a nice Eric Rohmer film, but then it's as if they didn't really know where to go with it.

It didn't have the same punch.

I wouldn't say it was bad though. Despite a flat ending, there was plenty that I liked about it.
