"Who has cut the cable cord?"

(Not sure if here or high tech would be better)

What do you do now?

Netflix? Hulu? TV tuner card for PC and antenna?

Torrents? Usenet? Redbox? Library?

i have for almost a year now, i have netflix, hulu plus, download torrents, and have a tv tuner. I got the faster internet connection pay over 60 dollars less than I would a month and love it. I find it really hard to go back, sports is mostly what makes me want to go back, though i have mlb tv, and will get league pass... but for the most part unless im doing a major deal i am good with doing it this way

I was paying $150 for digital cable and that was without movie channels.

Fuck that.

I pay $50 bucks for 15 Megs now.
Anoth $10 for Netflix.
And another $10 for Hulu Plus.

I grab my fav shows off of torrents and I get a decent amount of over the air channels.

ESPN3 helps me out sometimes. NBC streams Sunday Night Football. NFL.com offers the NFL Replay so I don't need the DVR if I miss games. I can see all the games live for the most part. NBA League Pass is online. I'm good.

Hulu, Netflix, a friend's HBO GO (cheating, I know), and Amazon Prime. I have to buy FX shows but 30 bucks for a season of Justified (that I then own) is better than cable.

It's not perfect but I liked it better because it's cheaper and I don't waste time watching stupid shows just because they're there.

Keep thinking about dropping Hulu since I only use it for Daily Show/Colbert, but I suppose New Girl is coming back and the second half of that first season was gang busters.

Cable was nice and convenient when I lived with my mom, but I've caught up on a LOT of television (and some movies) since I bit the bullet on Netflix when I finally moved out. And you get kind of spoiled without ads.

Also, sports from first***s***t*.eu, which is fuzzy but generally clean. Sometimes I catch Sportscenter or PTI from there too, though the ESPN stream can be fussy. I wish ESPN3 worked on PS3.

Cable cancelled. Internet is still on.

Hardware:
HTPC (Core i3, Silicon Dust HD Homerun Dual, 5TB of disk space )and a Tivo HD.

Cox Cable sends unencrypted QAM if you have Internet, so ABC, CBS, NBC, CW, and a few locals will be there.

My Tivo service is still on (Tivo HD with a ATSC and QAM tuner)but I can't can't get the channels mapped correctly. NBC still comes over-the-air with a small antenna so I'll be okay for a while.

I might run a cable to the roof and hook up my old antenna for more OTA channels.

The Tivo will stick around or get cancelled depending on the reliability of Windows as a DVR.

In the meantime I have these services:
1)Netflix (trial)
2)Amazon Prime Video
3)Hulu Desktop
4)A USENET account
5)A list of torrent sites
6)The internets

I guess I'll try to figure out how to subscribe to USENET shows, I know there are some services that download NZB files automatically.

I think torrent subscriptions work the same way.

I kept my Cable modem with Cox. That means the clear QAM channels still come through. Plus I hooked up my old antenna on the roof, and between the two sources I get ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CW, PBS and three local channels and a few sub-channels. So Network TV + locally syndicated stuff is coming in great. (And People's Court is in HD over the air here.)

I'm keeping the Tivo HD (which has a QAM tuner) so I still have DVR. That's $12.95 a month - but I think it's more reliable than a PC with a Tuner card.

Show I can get for free:
Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Modern Family ,Community ,The Office , The Big Bang Theory ,Person of Interest, The Mentalist, 2 Broke Girls), NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, The Simpsons, , This Old House, 30 Rock, Bob's Burgers, New Girl, Unforgettable,Saturday Night Live, Judge Mathis, The People's Court, ,MasterChef,

Pawn Stars and Major Crimes were on last night on TBS and History, and they both showed up on USENET within 45 minutes of airing in San Diego.

I've also made a list of shows not available OTA or on QAM that I've watched in the past year or so: Restaurant: Impossible ,Pawn Star, American Restoration,The First 48,The Glades,The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,The Colbert Report,American Pickers,Real Time With Bill Maher,Leverage, White Collar, Futurama

I haven't had cable since I moved out to LA a year and a half ago and I haven't missed it that much.

I see things later than the East Coast but earlier than the West Coast. Shit, by the time dinner starts, I've flown through most of primetime.

I've also got Netflix and Hulu for watching random things.

But there's no replacement for HD sports. You can get it streaming but it's just not the same as watching it on HD. Subscribing to MLB.tv, NBA League Pass and NFL Sunday Ticket costs so much, you might as well sign up for cable again.

Because Internet was cheaper that way. The upside is that I get BBC America. But other than that, yeah, Netflix, Amazon, a friend's HBO Go, MLB.tv, and I'm pretty good.

been subsisting on illegal downloads, dvd purchases, hulu and netflix ever since

i had an htpc that i built in '06-07 but it died about a year ago and i haven't had the time or $ to put it back together. i'm hoping my raspberry pi will fill that void whenever it ships

i have realized in the past few months, esp with my gf always finding new stuff for us to watch together, that i don't like tv and movies that much. i'd much rather read or play a game or listen to music

for some things (live sports) it's a little annoying, but not majorly since you can find anything on the internet. I copped both mlb.tv and NBA league pass this year, but I'm thinking of dropping the NBA this season since there are way too many restrictions on what you can watch, unlike the MLB. For major sporting events you can still watch via aerial, which gives a really good HD feed. Shows are easy if you combine netflix, hulu and torrents.

Main improvement is not being tied to the TV as much. I used to turn it on pretty much when I got home after work, and do too much aimless channel surfing or program way too much stuff on the DVR. I've been reading a lot more now (goal for this year is 50 books at least), and have been doing more interesting personal stuff like taking language classes or running.

It's pretty easy really

Media Sources:
Netflix
Hulu
Usenet

Hardware:
6 TB NAS server
Net top box in my room
Apple TVs in the kids rooms
Net top box in the family room

Software:
XBMC on every box
Usenet set up with SickBeard, Couchpotato and Sabnzbd

The real gem is the usenet setup. My server acts like a DVR. From either my computer or my phone, I tell the server which shows to download. It'll check Usenet to see if it's been posted and if it's the right quality. If it is it downloads and automatically updates the library.

Besides sports, smaller niche shows (like shit on We TV) will be hard to find if you find them at all. Saving $100 a month and got 50/25

Well they used to call me Maf

You know an easy how to guides on these? (If not, I'll RTFM - but I'd rather not.)

It *might* be a little tricky dealing with the Olympics. SickBeard scrapes from www.thetvdb.com. If the Olympics are set up properly on the site, then the process should be automatic. You may have to manually rename the videos.

It's never a problem for standard shows though.

now I have a tv with no cable, internet, or antenna. I watch everything on dvd or if there's something I want to see live, I go to a bar (because the only things I care about live are sports). But I haven't watched a dvd in several months and am thinking about going on a netflix hiatus.

Honestly, it seems like everyone whose house I go to has a giant tv that is turned on all the time. A couple that we're close friends with says that they knew they were right for each other when, the first time he brought her to his home, she walked in and turned on the tv. Which is huge. And the whole room is decorated around it. There is no provision for conversation. As opposed to my home, in which the sofa faces an armchair and a rocking chair.

I can't get behind the idea of living with a gigantic screen in front of me all the time. Or even a tiny one if it is turned on constantly.

living rooms look so much nicer this way; or if instead of the TV you have a turntable set up with a bunch of records on low-lying furniture. Books can work too.

Is this the point where I hand in my man card?

Aereo lost their SCOTUS case

http://www.vox.com/2014/6/25/5833864/aereo-loses-supreme-court-case

The Supreme Court dealt a potentially fatal blow to the TV streaming startup Aereo on Monday, ruling that the company with thousands of tiny antennas was guilty of copyright infringement on a massive scale.

First launched in 2012, the company allows people in several metro areas to view and record over-the-air television broadcasts over the Internet. Broadcasters sued Aereo, arguing that streaming their content without permission was copyright infringement.

But Aereo disagrees. The service is built around a vast array of tiny antennas — one for each active user. Citing a 2008 court decision, Aereo has argued that customers are just renting individual antennas to watch television they're legally entitled to watch anyway.

In a 6-3 decision written by Justice Stephen Breyer, the court sided with the broadcasters. Three of the court's conservatives — Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomaa, and Samuel Alito, dissented.

Stay tuned for more details.

it was the business model. Sports (especially football) is the primary reason people maintain their cable sub, and this would have gone a long way in opening up peoples' options.

It was surprising in itself that Aereo won the lower court case, so I was curious to see the SCOTUS take on it. The good thing is that the SCOTUS was explicit in narrowing the decision to Aereo's case specifically, and not extending it to cloud-related issues. What is especially interesting though is that the most conservative justices (Scalia, Alito, and Thomas) were the three dissenting votes.

And for the record, I didn't have a dog in this fight. Unlike the net neutrality situation, this one was far murkier because of the nature of the broadcasts and retransmission fees.

44. "Big FCC rule change could make internet tv a reality..."
In response to Reply # 0

Ok, so this Tom Wheeler guy actually may not be a bad pick.... one major step closer to cable cutting if this goes through. Some powerful lobbyists on the other side though, will be interesting to see who in Congress WILL oppose this, because telecoms are big on both sides of the aisle...

http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/28/7086201/internet-tv-rule-change-proposed-fcc

Internet TV providers are just starting to emerge, but they might soon get the jumpstart they need in order to turn into real competitors for traditional cable TV. The US Federal Communications Commission is beginning to consider a rule change that would put internet TV providers on the same playing field as cable companies when it comes to select regulations. Critically, it would mean that broadcasters wouldn't be able to refuse to let an internet TV provider carry their content.

"CONSUMERS SHOULDN’T BE SHACKLED TO RULES THAT ONLY RECOGNIZE 20TH CENTURY TECHNOLOGY"

Instead, internet TV providers would be able to negotiate to carry TV stations with the same ability that cable companies and satellite companies can. That should solve solve the recurring issue of internet TV hopefuls being unable to license the content they need to get off the ground. In fact, the FCC is actually just considering extending rules to cover internet TV providers that Congress once put in place to help the emergence of satellite companies — rules that, as you may have gathered, were successful in producing their desired goal. This rule change would cover companies that are broadly known as "multichannel video programming distributors (MVPD)."

As far as FCC chair Tom Wheeler is concerned, there should be no difference between cable, satellite, and internet TV providers, so long as they're all offering the same service. "The definition of an MVPD should turn on the services that a provider offers, not on how those services reach viewers," Wheeler writes in a blog post today. "Twenty-first century consumers shouldn’t be shackled to rules that only recognize 20th century technology." Likewise, the rule change would also mean that current cable providers remain regulated the same way should they move online.

The rule change will have to move through FCC proceedings before it's implemented, and plans to make similar changes have died before. But given the current lineup of commissioners, there's reason to believe that it could make it through this time. This proposal is also in part a reaction to the ongoing struggle of Aereo, which was effectively ruled to be a cable company by the Supreme Court but hasn't actually been able to negotiate for content like cable companies, thus leading to what may well be the company's end. Aereo actually filed a letter with the commission earlier this month urging it to take these very steps.

"THE FCC IS TAKING A REAL AND MEANINGFUL STEP FORWARD."

"The way people consume television is rapidly changing and our laws and regulations have not kept pace," Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia says in a statement today. "By clarifying these rules, the FCC is taking a real and meaningful step forward for competition in the video market. The FCC recognizes that when competition flourishes, consumers win."

Wheeler also views this change as a way to promote broadband access and innovation among TV providers. The Commission has heard that the ability to offer TV and internet bundles is a major factor in companies' decisions to build out high-speed internet networks. If internet providers can now begin to offer TV channels over the internet, they'll be able to create those bundles, theoretically making them more likely to build out broadband access so that they can find more customers.

Because the rule change should lead to the presence of more TV providers, Wheeler also believes that it might finally prompt companies to offer channels à la carte — the dream of everyone paying way too much for way too many TV channels. That's by far a less certain result of this proposed rule change, but it is more than fair to assume that we'd see increased competition as more companies enter the business.
