Here's Why... I think it would be outstanding if he made it a woman. With the track record for chicks in the Narutoverse this would be a big improvement (especially compared to the strength of the women in ATLA) .
He did do lamentations for not protecting her over her grave alongside Minato and Obito. However how she became so adept @ using the sharingan despite not being an Uchiha is a wrench in that theory. She also knows a shitload about the Uchiha that even former Root members and kakashi don't know.

but a it was suggested that Kakashi only learned/developed mangekyou during the time skip. So, was it an unsuccessful attempt to upgrade his eye?

And Kakashi doesn't seem the type to lust after power like that... So that would definitely add a previously unseen element of his character.

But it still hasn't been explained how Kakashi obtained the mangekyou since apparently you it's gotten through sustaining some immense emotional trauma. Rin makes sense in that regard and Kishimoto is enough of a hack writer to completely gloss over Kakashi not getting it until the time skip.

Kakashi always had a problem with stamina. Remember back in the day other Konoha niggas would joke him because he always ended up in the hospital after his battles?

that was due to him using up too much chakra when activating the Sharingan.

So here we have young Kakashi activating Mangekyou and immediately passing out, due to him not being able to handle the strain of a Uchiha eye. If you ain't a Uchiha, then you have to have the stamina to use it because it causes immense chakra drain. He realizes this and doesn't use Mangekyou for years, slowly using standard Sharingan shit. But even that takes a toll on his chakra.

It's safe to assume during the time skip he worked on stamina so he can properly use Mangekyou. Remember how he couldn't use Chidori more than 3 times when training Sasuke to fight Gaara for the exams, but then during the fight with Kazuku, he could use it up to 8 times?

Kakashi is a smart dude. Just as smart as Shikimaru.

Thus Kakashi & Rin being out numbered, remember Kakashi at that time was ashamed of his pops for fucking up a mission in order to save his squad members & was on some "ANYTHING TO FINISH THE MISSION!!" shit.

Thus when he murked Rin, he was on some "ANYTHING TO PROTECT KONOHA & SAVE THE MISSION!!!" type shit.

Of course he sense learned his lesson by the time he first took on Naruto, Sakura & Sasuke probably ranking that as a huge regret... but, I can see how he just shanked her like that.
