and I'll understand why.

he can be supremely self important, and this time he's not in the least bit subtle. I can see it getting much worse, and that takes away from the fact that it's cast and written really well.
the pilot was cool (saw the screener)

waiting to see how much of the show is the inside baseball of running a news show, and how much of it is sorkin sermonzing.

and this pilot really made secure in that position. It's a total mess. There are a few nice moments when the big story breaks but overall it's incredibly precious and out of touch with the country as a whole. Blech.

Most people will want the vampires, shape shifters and wolves that came on before it, but I'd rather the intelligence and social commentary this presented.

Loved it, can't wait to see where it goes.

I do, however, love the premise of bringing journalism back into news reporting – a lost art.

After watching, what I'm left with is the desire to see a documentary or news show that goes back and looks at how stories from three or five years ago were covered when they first broke. It would be interesting to see how stories or vantage points changed, what was run instead of it, etc.

As for "The Newsroom", it's not looking great.

The first half felt like preachy play. It almost felt like Sorkin was trying to go against the walk and talk so much that he had everything motionless and stagnant.

I really hope Sorkin breaks from his anti-internet stance since it overlooks the biggest issue with TV news right now. The news already happens before 6pm, the internet breaks it. MSNBC recently admitted that they aren't about breaking news, they're about people talking about the news.

Also, I rolled my eyes when Wil said that the girl was part of the worst. generation. ever. a common belief that pretty much ignores the fact that Wil (and Sorkin's) generation is the one that has driven everything into the shit.

The show also did a pretty ham-fisted job with the love triangle. It seemed like everything stopped and a new show started when that came up and the current boyfriend is too obviously a douche and the other guy basically likes her because his boss told him too.

The characters were mostly archetypes and we didn't get to really meet them. This was kind of the anti-West Wing which did an amazing job of introducing the key figures in the cold open, nevermind the first 30 minutes of the show.

Once it got going it was better but they can't pretend like they are breaking news stories every night. It'll be interesting to see how it shapes up moving forward.

he's a dick...he's supposed to think this. to me it says more about teh character and less about the show's intentions. it makes sense that a guy like Will MacVoy would think that about today's 20 year olds. the theme was continued by how he repeatedly got the girl's name wrong and his whole "wait...i have a blog" talk.

How much coverage did cronkite and them give to the CIA shadiness in latin america in the 50s, or shit, corporate shadiness in the US in the 50s and 60s?

I'm really really over the baby boomer longing for innocence meme.

I like this choice for show setting because this is the subject matter where Sorkin shines but he does have to be careful to not come off too preachy but more satirical in manner.

I agree with SoulHonky in his review that the love triangle (Don ,Maggie, Jim) felt forced or rushed, the characters just introduced themselves- let's get to know everybody. I'm hoping the relationship history between Will and Mackenzie balances out the younger love triangle.

I still enjoyed the show nonetheless just hope Sorkin brings us some interesting characters ala West Wing rather than focusing on just interesting events even though it is about a news show..lol. There is definitely potential for this show ,a lot more than Studio 60 (which I am not ashamed to say I liked..lol) and if Sorkin INTRODUCES us to the characters that would make a big difference. But I'm sure Sorkin will give us bits and pieces with each episode putting together the pieces of a drama jigsaw puzzle.

I'm in.

They reported on the spill and explosion, while the other networks simply reported on the explosion. Consequently, they influenced how much play the story received (yellow to red on the wire).

Now a story this big would eventually get picked up by other networks, but getting the "scoop" is something any news organization takes pride in.

This is basically a vehicle for Jeff Daniels to show off his acting range on TV. Great.

Do I think it depicts how news is reported accurately and intelligently? Who cares? This is entertainment.. not the news.

and so disappointed when I read the New Yorker review:

Broken News
The artificial intelligence of “The Newsroom.”
by Emily Nussbaum June 25, 2012

“I’m affable!” Will McAvoy yells in the pilot of “The Newsroom,” Aaron Sorkin’s new HBO series. McAvoy (played by Jeff Daniels) is an irascible anchor whose brand is likability, and it’s a good line, delivered well. It is also a rare moment of self-mockery—and one of the last sequences I was on board for in the series. In “The Newsroom,” clever people take turns admiring one another. They sing arias of facts. They aim to remake television news: “This is a new show, and there are new rules,” a maverick executive producer announces, several times, in several ways. Their outrage is so inflamed that it amounts to a form of moral eczema—only it makes the viewer itch.

This is not to say that “The Newsroom” doesn’t score points now and then, if you share its politics. It starts effectively enough, with an homage to “Network” ’s galvanizing “I’m mad as hell” rant, as McAvoy, a blandly uncontroversial cable big shot whom everyone tauntingly calls Leno, is trapped on a journalism-school panel. When the moderator needles him into answering a question about why America is the greatest country on earth, he goes volcanic, ticking off the ways in which America is no such thing, then closing with a statement of hope, about the way things used to be. This speech goes viral, and his boss (Sam Waterston) and his producer, MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer), who’s also his ex-girlfriend, encourage him to create a purer news program, purged of any obsession with ratings and buzz.

Much of McAvoy’s diatribe is bona-fide baloney—false nostalgia for an America that never existed—but it is exciting to watch. And if you enjoyed “The West Wing,” Sorkin’s helpful counterprogramming to the Bush Administration, your ears will prick up. The pilot of “The Newsroom” is full of yelling and self-righteousness, but it’s got energy, just like “The West Wing,” Sorkin’s “Sports Night,” and his hit movie “The Social Network.” The second episode is more obviously stuffed with piety and syrup, although there’s one amusing segment, when McAvoy mocks some right-wing idiots. After that, “The Newsroom” gets so bad so quickly that I found my jaw dropping. The third episode is lousy (and devolves into lectures that are chopped into montages). The fourth episode is the worst. There are six to go.

Sorkin is often presented as one of the auteurs of modern television, an innovator and an original voice. But he’s more logically placed in a school of showrunners who favor patterspeak, point-counterpoint, and dialogue-driven tributes to the era of screwball romance. Some of this banter is intelligent; just as often, however, it’s artificial intelligence, predicated on the notion that more words equals smarter. Besides Sorkin, these creators include Shonda Rhimes (whose Washington melodrama, “Scandal,” employs cast members from “The West Wing”); Amy Sherman-Palladino, of “The Gilmore Girls” (and the appealing new “Bunheads”); and David E. Kelley, who created “Ally McBeal” and “Boston Legal.” Sorkin is supposed to be on a different level from his peers: longer words, worldlier topics. And many viewers clearly buy into this idea: years after Sorkin’s terrible, fascinating “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” was cancelled, I still occasionally run into someone who insists that Americans were just too stupid to get it.

As Dan Rather might put it, that dog won’t hunt. Sorkin’s shows are the type that people who never watch TV are always claiming are better than anything else on TV. The shows’ air of defiant intellectual superiority is rarely backed up by what’s inside—all those Wagnerian rants, fingers poked in chests, palms slammed on desks, and so on. In fact, “The Newsroom” treats the audience as though we were extremely stupid. Characters describe events we’ve just witnessed. When a cast member gets a shtick (like an obsession with Bigfoot), he delivers it over and over. In episode four, there’s a flashback to episode three. In a recent interview, Sorkin spoke patronizingly of cop shows, but his Socratic flirtations are frequently just as formulaic, right down to the magical “Ask twice!” technique.

There’s no denying that Sorkin’s shows can be addictive: I couldn’t stop watching “Studio 60,” which was about the making of a “Saturday Night Live”-style sketch show, no matter how hard I tried. That thing was alive! It was lit up with payback, as well as with portraits of Sorkin’s exes so glowing that they were radioactive. The show’s deliriously preening heroes were so memorable that they inspired a set of fictional Twitter feeds, in which the characters live on, making remarks like “Deciding if the satire I’m about to write should be scathing or whip-smart.”

“The Newsroom” sounded more promising, journalism being a natural habitat for blowhards. But so far the series lacks the squirmy vigor of “Studio 60,” particularly since Sorkin saps the drama with an odd structural choice. Rather than invent fictional crises, he’s set the show in “the recent past,” so that the plot is literally old news: the BP oil spill, the Tea Party, the Arizona immigration law. That sounds like an innovative concept, but it turns the characters into back-seat drivers, telling us how the news should have been delivered. (Instead of “Broadcast News,” it’s like a sanctimonious “Zelig.”) Naturally, McAvoy slices through crises by “speaking truth to stupid,” in McHale’s words. But he also seizes credit for “breaking stories”—like the political shenanigans of the Koch brothers—that were broken by actual journalists, all of them working in print or online. In the fourth episode, the show injects a real-life tragedy into the mix, pouring a pop ballad over the montage, just the way “E.R.” used to do whenever a busload of massacred toddlers came crashing through the door.

There are plenty of terrific actors on this show, but they can’t do much with roles that amount to familiar Sorkinian archetypes. There is the Great Man, who is theoretically flawed, but really a primal truth-teller whom everyone should follow (or date). There are brilliant, accomplished women who are also irrational, high-strung lunatics—the dames and muses who pop their eyes and throw jealous fits when not urging the Great Man on. There are attractively suited young men, from cynical sharpies to idealistic sharpies, who glare and bond and say things like “This right here is always the swan song of the obsolete when they’re staring the future paradigm in the face.”

The show features three people of color. The most prominent is an Indian staffer named Neal Sampat, played by Dev Patel. The dialogue makes fun of McAvoy for calling him Punjab and referring to him as “the Indian stereotype of an I.T. guy,” but the show treats Neal with precisely that type of condescension. Neal is a WikiLeaks fan who writes the show’s blog, but he’s a cheerful cipher, a nerd who speaks nerd talk. There are also two African-American producers, who are introduced to the audience when McAvoy—who is publicly memorizing the names of his staff, having been accused of not remembering them—says, “Gary. Kendra. Gary’s a smart black guy who is not afraid to criticize Obama. Kendra got double 800s on her S.A.T.s, makes Gary crazy. I studied.”

Nobody reacts, and I suspect we’re supposed to find his behavior charmingly blunt or un-P.C. But, again, neither Gary nor Kendra is at all developed, or given any role in the show’s wince-worthy set of love triangles. It gave me flashbacks to one of the worst plots on “Studio 60,” in which the comic played by D. L. Hughley—the “smart black guy” who was always reading the newspaper—went to a comedy club to anoint the one true young black comic among the hacks and mediocrities. Sorkin’s shows overflow with liberal verities about diversity, but they reproduce a universe in which the Great Man is the natural object of worship, as martyred by gossips as any Philip Roth protagonist.

Despite a few bad bets, HBO is on a truly interesting run right now. It has built a solid Sunday lineup, with “Game of Thrones,” the excellent “Girls,” and “Veep,” a political sitcom that just ended its funny, prickly, but also rather dead-hearted début season. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays the title role, is a skilled comedienne, and the cast knows how to sling the writer Armando Iannucci’s nasty zingers. And yet the series was so cynical that it somehow felt naïve. When Louis-Dreyfus’s character got pregnant, she promptly miscarried, and then had no meaningful reaction to either condition. This was disappointing, but I still have hope for the second season, when many sitcoms find their feet, as did NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” the one excellent political series on TV.

“The Newsroom” is the inverse of “Veep”: it’s so naïve it’s cynical. Sorkin’s fantasy is of a cabal of proud, disdainful brainiacs, a “media élite” who swallow accusations of arrogance and shoot them back as lava. But if the storytelling were more confident, it could take a breath and deliver drama, not just talking points. Instead, the deck stays stacked. Whenever McAvoy delivers a speech or slices up a right-winger, the ensemble beams at him, their eyes glowing as if they were cultists. The series turns Will McAvoy into the equivalent of the character Karen Cartwright, on “Smash,” the performer who the show keeps insisting is God’s gift to Broadway. Can you blame me for rooting for McAvoy’s enemies, all those flyover morons, venal bean-counters, sorority girls, and gun-toting bimbos? Like a political party, a TV show is nothing without a loyal opposition. ♦

The pilot shines, the next few eps falter and then, when the writers and actors and director gel, things REALLY get started.

Also, Sorkin is pretty polarizing. A LOT of ppl DO NO LIKE HIM. So, if you're a fan, I'd say watch it anyway.

The breaking news portion was really exciting. Almost everything else though...ugh...

It felt so damn cyse-ie. Possibly due to a combination of Sorkin-isms, and it being a pilot.

- The tension between McAvoy and Mackenzie.
- The love triangle.
- All the comedic beats that fell flat.

ugh...

The characters (including McAvoy) just don't seem fresh to me. And according to the reviews it's gonna get worse before (hopefully) improving?

I'm gonna keep watching for now (Hi Olivia Munn!), but I have to admit, I'm a little afraid.

I call BS on being able to change that graphic to "Vertigo Medicine" that quickly, though. THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN, lol.

I also feel like there was a lot of padding going on, like thee wasn't enough material to fill a whole hour so even the Sorkin-isms are stretched a little thin.

I loved The Social Network and Moneyball so much, I forgot that I didn't care for the West Wing or Sunset Strip.

I was all excited about the Newsroom and it took 10 minutes of the show before I remembered that I didn't like the self-righteous pompus preaching of West Wing. Or too whip smart dialouge.

The pilot was passable but there was a noticeable dip in quality in the second episode. The way this stuff is written kinda reminds me of network TV instead of HBO. I'll give it a few more weeks to get better though.

that shit was funny as hell and those two have great chemistry,

i hope it's more josh and amy, than matt n harriet or jordan n danny.

and sam waterston threatening to beat someone's ass is always great. i so miss Jack Mccoy.

the email thing? asterisks? show of hands, who's ever used an asterisk or a "staff" email. reply or reply all, sure, but that shit was corny and telegraphed.

i dunno if I can handle any more super idealist/patriot monologues from a brit. call me xenophobic but I just fucking can't. plus NO ONE talks like that.

i wish sorkin knew that most of the people that watch his show, have watched ALL his shows. therefore, stop spoonfeeding us messages. it becomes trite and uncomfortable.

Wouldn't it be dope if she only appeared on monitor as a talking head, delivering random news reports?

Maybe not (no fully body shots), but the thought crossed my mind as her character was being introduced.

Someone above mentioned liking the "RING RING RING" conversations between Jim and Maggie. I hated that shit. I was painfully obnoxious, and I cringed through every moment they were together.

Maybe even worse was the mass email thing. I like Mackenzie more when she's in control of production, and (trying) to put Will in his place, and less when she's being a total goofball.

Did anyone play "Spot The Sorkinism?" I did. He kinda did the 'whom' thing with Olivia Munn. Playing this game might be the only thing that keeps me watching this show. It's really not that good.

only the part about the guy on the phone being her ex, and her having to be under the bed while he fucked his ex gf.

the two of them sold the shit out of something spectacularly implausible.

i was entertained.

Because then I'd be explaining the scene from "He's Just Not That In To You."

I have a feeling that I might be tapping out after the supposedly awful fourth episode. A lot is riding on ep. 3 because I have little interest in any of the characters, their manic acting, their juvenile problems, and I pray to God that next week doesn't include another "Oh, I just happen to have a history with this key person" element like the ex in this ep and the sister/roommate in the previous one.

Milch said Season Two would have followed the midget wrestlers from Mexico that we see on the TV sets from time to time.

I grabbed the DVD set from Amazon. Averages around $9.95 from 3rd party sellers. It's not HD, but it was loads of extras.

I loved the West Wing, I loved Studio 60, and so far I'm liking this, yeah it's not perfect, and I've worked at two of the biggest news organizations in the world for almost the last 10 years so I'm especially curious where he takes this and how realistic it will be once he's done introducing the characters.

I take faith from how the critics destroyed the west wing originally too, and how they destroyed studio 60, for me they were wrong on both and let's hope they're just as wrong in the long run this time around.

Here's the new york times review of the first west wing episode:

was that jane fonda playing the ted turner-esque media tycoon role? interesting, given their history. she did a great job w that scene. they both did.

the associate producer guy looks like a younger version of carcetti/littlefinger with a bigger chin. they have the same stare w the face tilted down.

and lol @ the mcrib ribbing. maggie's bf is a buster.

moar sloan please. she also needs to fire her makeup person- those cheeks are so rosy that linden and the weasel-looking guy are still looking for them back in seattle.

and can they change the opening credits already? so cheesy and sleep-inducing. and too long. and wtf is that muzak?

i know sorkin was a fly-on-the-wall at CNN for a bit while researching for this show but given the parallels between keith and newsnight's anchor (reputation as "difficult to work with," the murrow complex, tea party sniping, same sort of talking-under-their-breath posture/delivery, hell even bringing sloan into the fold = olbermann/maddow to an extent) ... has keith olbermann commented on this show yet?

I liked the meeting part of the episodes but everything else was either silly sit-com writing (the relationships) or just preaching about the Tea Party. Parts of it almost felt like a repeat.

I honestly have no idea what they can go with any of the relationships and there's really not enough to the show to keep me invested.

On a random side note, Gideon Yago from MTV News co-wrote the episode?

People have commented on the smugness of Sorkin's approach. I really wish the material (in this case the opening speech) didn't come off so holier than thou.

Liked Will a lot more in this episode than the previous two. Could be a result of him 'buying in', and the passage of time. Whatever it is, his not acting like a jerk to his crew made his scenes easier to stomach.

MacKenzie is still horrible. I understand that she's a little easy going, and at times goofy, but the way she handles 'those' social situations (rumors of cheating, dating new people), it's really annoying to watch.

I've had enough of this Jim and Maggie back and forth, and it's only been three episodes. This one episode alone had enough 'will they/won't they' to last an entire season.

Don (ooooo he's such a jerk, and not good for you Maggie), I thought had one of the best moments in the episode after he tried to heavy Elliot. Elliot had an idea of what was going on, and I'm glad they were able to handle it quickly, and move on. I think Don's gonna need this sort of balance to keep him from being a one dimensional jerk.

Sam Waterson was good this episode. Jane Fonda, I didn't enjoy as much as most did. It was a great setup for her to enter the stage and really make a splash, but it kinda fell flat to me.

I believe episode 4 (and not this one) is supposed to be the stinker. I'll definitely be watching it, but after that, I'm not sure I'll continue.

Are critics making decisions for us, or just sharing what they feel about the show?

As for Sorkin being disliked and possibly a dick (noted by Spade, but i'll address it here), I'm betting there are people in this thread who haven't met or are without strong feelings towards Sorkin, who aren't overly impressed with the show. For instance, me.

The grudge or bias angle seems a little reductive.

People who "hate" on Tyler Perry are just jealous/self-loathing/crabs in a bucket/don't "get it", etc.

People who are critical of Sorkin's ham-fisted, sanctimonious writing style have some sort of axe to grind.

Shit is silly.

When they characterize the SHOW as sermonizing/preaching, etc.

And so far. 1 possible 2 eps have had anything that could be labled as sermonizing - that to me is a patently false statement. IME when people make patently false statements, there's usually some kind of agenda involved.

Also,

The critics said the eps get progressively worse, culminating in the 4th ep which is reportedly unbareable. I believe, and I think the consensus is behind me that so far the show is actually getting better (2nd ep notwithstanding) which, again, points to a patently false statement that doesn't make what I'm seeing, so AGAIN - it looks like there is an agenda at work.

Lastly, of course critics view everything through their lens/personal bias, and I think they're entitled to their opinion. However, when you know you have a particular bias against something, you should state that from the jump, so we all know your views aren't necesarrily characteristic of how an one would view that should.

For instance; during Longo's Ted review, he stated, simple and plain, he was not really a fan of McFarland's brand of humor. He still gave the movie a bad review, but that quick disclaimer allows the reader, to view the review through the lens of the reviewer's bias.

All I'm saying, simply, is that given what I'm seeing. The show does not deserve some of the scathing reviews it's gotten. Is it perfect? Of course not - but there is MUCH worse on TV that gets FAR lighter scrutiny.

Also, if the defenders of Girls can state, THE EXACT SAME THING we've been saying, I'd say - it's fair game.

But there isn't anything patently false about that statement. All three episodes have multiple scenes where a character gets on his soap box and delivers a long-winded soliloquy about something. I mean, it's the big thing that Aaron Sorkin is fucking known for.

If a reviewer is stating their OPINION that the show gets progressively worse, then it can't be a patently false statement. So, again, it looks like there is no agenda. Just people who have a different opinion than you.

So, all you're saying is that you disagree with the opinions of some critics.

What! Bunheads & The Soul Man don't get the same scrutiny as an Aaron Sorkin produced drama on HBO?!

You can say it. That doesn't mean it's true.

I mean, I still enjoy it, because Daniels and Waterston get fun dialogue, and now so does Fonda, but it's without question preachy, sentimental, and ham-fisted. There's wit in the proceedings, but your enjoyment of the show unquestionably hinges on whether you buy into the show's sentiment.

And if you can ignore the current buffoonery of the female characters, again, not including Fonda.

In response to Reply # 0

I guess this is the one thing I don't get about the "We're gonna put the system on trial" approach that the American people aren't getting in their news.

Obviously its different than Fox News, but they made it out to be like this newscast was something that people weren't getting anywhere. They're basically doing kind of a Maddow type show while claiming its nonpartisan because Will is supposedly a Republican.

Are we supposed to believe no one was critical of the Tea Party in 2010 or its hijacking by the religious right, gun nuts and big money special interests. Sharon Angle's second amendment solutions quotes weren't a big story?

Then they use revisionist history to make claims that the media is missing or ignoring the big story. Figuring out the entire gulf oil spill during an afternoon, debt ceiling talk on the night of the 2010 elections, Scott Walker wants to bust the unions (the whole point of the recall was that he didn't campaign on it).

There are tons of valid criticisms of this country's media, but Sorkin's not making any of them here. He's basically making a left wing version of the very shows he's trying to critique.

The first episode had them getting lucky with two sources (coincidentally connected to the new producer) literally calling them to break the story.

The second episode, they sucked.

The third episode they covered the Tea Party ala MSNBC but without the tea bagger jokes.

Will McAvoy is basically a Republican version of Laurence O'Donnell (a former West Wing writer turned MSNBC pundit). He's more even keel than O'Donnell but there's really nothing new. He's taking his agenda and making it the top story every night. That's cable news.

That might be my biggest gripe. Using real-life events makes what they report overshadow everything else.

The relationships between coworkers and the day-to-day of doing actual reporting has been pushed to the back, although it might just be that that stuff has been done poorly to start.

For example the pre-interview that Maggie had to do with Jan Brewer's staff would have been a great behind the scenes type insight if they hadn't ruined it with the story about her hiding under the bed.

I've seen every ep of every show he's done and all the movies.

some knowing full well he wrote them. others (an american president, a few good men) that I didn't.

watching this show feels like snuggling up with your childhood blanket and for half a second feeling the warmth of nostalgia....before realizing you're not 4 and it only covers you to your waist.

It's nice and familiar, but this don't keep me warm at night.

I do think Sam Waterston drinking and threatening to fuck someone up every ep is something that will never not be funny.

The Coldplay over Gifford stuff was really tonally off and I think it really highlights how the mix between the news and the relationships are off.

It was also kind of lame to tie the gun control thing in with the Giffords shooting.

Still, the momentum whenever they do the news is great.

I'm really surprised that this episode got hated on so much because while it wasn't great, it was about on par with the rest of the episodes IMO.

In response to Reply # 106

I know the Tea Party has taken the Republican party to the far right but we have yet to see a single conservative point come from McAvoy.

I feel like TV critics hated it because it mocked something that most of them liked (reality TV). For the first time, they were close to being on the other side of one of Will's speeches.

SNIPPETS:

"One year ago up-and-coming reporter Jose Antonio Vargas revealed to the country he is here illegally. Here he speaks for the first time about the price he paid, the controversy he caused, and why figures like Mark Zuckerberg and Aaron Sorkin rallied to his aid."

"He did get support from people in high—and unexpected—places. Aaron Sorkin, screenwriter of The Social Network and The Newsroom, read that Washington State was revoking Vargas’s driver’s license. He contacted Jose personally and offered him his car service anytime he wanted. Jose’s friendship led to his drafting a memo about immigration reform for Sorkin, which worked its way into the plot of the second episode of The Newsroom. And, in a moment of life imitating art, Will McAvoy—Sorkin's fictional cable news host—offers his own car service to a undocumented worker."

McAvoy is against illegal immigrants and then decides to change his stance and help the dude with his problem. Sorkin wrote strong conservative characters in the West Wing; I just wish he'd either have Will have some conservative views that he sticks to or just stops pretending and calls him a liberal.

there isn't one character worth caring about in between the predictable diatribes & ludicrous dialogues.

And no, I don't hate Sorkin, I was a fan of West Wing at its peak & thought Social Network was great but this shit is honestly painful & in as much if not more of a fantasyland as any of the shit it rails against.

When does Boardwalk Empire start back up?

Don is amused that his girlfriend is obviously invested in another dude.

The boss dude lies even though it's with her roommate so she'll obviously find out.

That whole "You lied" convo.

Part of me wonders if Sorkin feels pressure by the shorter season run to push these relationships because in the West Wing something like this would have festered for a while and then blown up in a more believable time and place.

I can see why a lot of people were annoyed by this episode. The breaking news portions have provided some of the shows better moments, but this time around the calling (or not calling) of Giffords status was so sanctimonious, it was sickening. The cheesy music, Will's declaration that he will fight the Fonda and the suits. Ugh...

On top of that:

- Patel's Bigfoot thing which was supposed to be funny as annoying as shit.
- Maggie's attitude towards Jim at the Saturday morning meeting was horribly played. Also...a Saturday morning meeting for a Bigfoot presentation?
- MacKenzie and Sloan looked good at the New Year's Eve party, but the conversations throughout were painful.
- Does Will HAVE to mouthpiece Sorkin so much during personal moments? I know they tried to write it in on some, "oh he's trying to civilize" shit, but it doesn't make it any less horrible to watch.

120. "Columbia Journalism Review looks at the current crop of anchors"
In response to Reply # 0
Wed Jul-18-12 02:24 PM by Reflect

http://www.cjr.org/feature/weighing_anchors.php?page=all

Cross-posted from over in GD. Recall that CJR was namechecked by Sam Waterson's character.

SNIPPETS:

It is still true that the anchors are, for most viewers, what makes one program stand out from another, perhaps more than ever. “These newscasts are almost entirely a function of the anchors,†Sherwood says. “And it’s misplaced to over-interpret the changes that producers are making.â€

No one is trying harder to stand out than Sawyer and ABC World News, and it’s more than the drive to find the “insurgent lead.†Many nights, traditional news stories are treated as quickly as possible to make more time for warm and fuzzy features, health and consumer stories, and “news you can useâ€â€”the kinds of content you used to find mostly on the magazine programs and morning shows. Which is, of course, where Sawyer has spent most of her professional life.

But the emphasis is on finding and highlighting the most interesting and popular stories, not necessarily the most important, and infusing them with Sawyer’s dramatic approach and delivery and “hot†writing. Developments are “seismic†and “incredible.†There’s medical news that “could put us all at greater risk.†The “Made in America team†is “back in action.†The White House correspondent “took the allegations straight to the White House.†There’s new technology that might mean “20 seconds could save your life.†Tonight, “we have an outrage and an action.†Meanwhile, Sawyer reserves time for more news-lite—the staff calls the segments “Diane pagesâ€â€”that she and her audience can enjoy: a new ketchup package (“for any of us who have ever squirted ourselves and everyone else around us with these little packages of ketchup, hooray—a small victory!â€); the plane that landed with a baby boy born in flight; viewers’ nominations for “the saddest movie ever.â€

In Pelley, CBS has probably the most well-qualified and proven television journalist ever to ascend to the anchor job; he has filed breaking news pieces from around the nation and the world, covered the White House, and compiled an impressive body of work for 60 Minutes. His no-nonsense (some would say stiff) style is well matched to the style of the program. The closest he comes to hyperbole is when he refers to CBS News resources “around the world†(the reality is that CBS, like the other networks, has drastically cut back its foreign coverage resources, dropping most of its correspondents, producers, crews, and bureaus overseas) and touts added information provided by “our research department†(which amounts to three full-time employees). He is less likely to comment on a correspondent’s report than to be found on camera as the report ends, gazing thoughtfully at the monitor, his eyeglasses and his chin in his hand.

In its mix of content and in its style, Nightly News tries to achieve that feeling of neighbors chatting to each other. While a viewer can rely on the program’s first segment not to shy from the day’s traditional news budget, the mix also includes soft feel-good features like “Making A Difference,†“Sign of the Times,†and “Road to Retirement.†The Williams writing style—the opposite of hot ABC copy—approximates that back-fence conversation. His introductions to pieces meander more than broadcast writing conventions would dictate, but the technique may help viewers understand what they’re about to see. And his choices of filler items seem to facilitate folksy story-telling: a guy shot in “the backside†by a dog (“the dog is not talkingâ€), a fire alarm set off by a squirrel living in the school kitchen (the bad news is “those weren’t raisins on the rice puddingâ€), missing moon rocks (“check your sock drawerâ€), a coming lunar eclipse (“consult your local listingsâ€), and two newly discovered planets (“the bummer here†is they’re too hot to live on). Like Sawyer, Williams often uses “we,†“you,†and “our†to edge closer to the audience. He likes informalities like “the Feds.†Even the way Williams closes his broadcast is right down the comfortable middle: He’ll “look for you†tomorrow night. No ponderous thank you from all those CBS folks around the world; no earnest call to rejoin Diane tomorrow.

It is no secret that at both ABC and CBS, corporate management has pushed news management to make deals with CNN that would get them out from under the very high costs and—in some years—the losses involved in maintaining the highly paid staffs and expensive facilities needed to produce the evening newscasts. So far, the talks have come to nothing because the networks have union contracts and CNN doesn’t, and that makes it nearly impossible to share resources. One alternative that has been discussed is to get around the union barriers by licensing CNN to produce an evening newscast for a network, for a fee that would be less than what the network spends to maintain its own staff and facilities.

If I cared about the characters more, or, more importantly, how they interact, then the sanctimonious nature of the show would be far more palatable.

Daniels is acting his ass off, but he can't save the poor writing for the relationship between him and Mac.

The Don/Alison Pill/John Gallagher Jr shit is now beyond appalling. The scene in the Bigfoot meeting (also dumb, but I'll allow it) was by far the worst so far on the show.

Just kill the phony relationship shit. Stick to sanctimoniousness. Sorkin is far more convincing at that than the canned sitcom love triangles.

the weird thing is it's supposed to be "real" and uses real life events and stories.

however none of the people or their actions is grounded in any kind of common sense. not a lick.

so now as I watch, I kid you not, I consider them in a parallel universe where people come in on Saturdays for Bigfoot meetings and aren't aware they're having feelings for people or blurt out their relationship issues in front of their staffers. Oh don't forget dudes lecturing sure opportunities for sex after 10pm.

so within that framework, the show is pretty good, cause people are selling the shit out of this nonsense and acting their asses off.

and Sorkin used "you think?" yet again, and "...gonna need more than a couple of guys." which Bartlet used when they were considering putting him a bunker of some sort.

126. "Aaron Sorkin versus reality (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.salon.com/2012/07/19/aaron_sorkin_versus_frivolity/

By AlEX PAREENE

Aaron Sorkin is why people hate liberals. He’s a smug, condescending know-it-all who isn’t as smart as he thinks he is. His feints toward open-mindedness are transparently phony, he mistakes his opinion for common sense, and he’s preachy. Sorkin has spent years fueling the delusional self-regard of well-educated liberals. He might be more responsible than anyone else for the anti-democratic “everyone would agree with us if they weren’t all so stupid†attitude of the contemporary progressive movement. And age is not improving him.

Sorkin is … not as popular as he once was, when he was still just the creative mind behind the much-loved “Sports Night†and “The West Wing.†People are, broadly, sick of his shtick. But he’s also, undoubtedly, more professionally successful than ever, back in demand as a major film screenwriter (coming off an Oscar win followed by a nomination) and heading one of HBO’s trademark “prestige†dramas. He seems nonplussed by the negative responses to his new show, “The Newsroom,†and he has plenty of reason to be: To his mind, he’s the same hack he’s always been.

He has a limited bag of tricks. Even his sparkling banter is one-note. His characters always say exactly, precisely what they mean, at all times. There’s no subtext, no irony, nothing ever left unspoken in his dialogue. His characters don’t even get to be sarcastic without someone asking them if they’re being sarcastic. Everyone alternates between speechifying, quipping and dumbly setting up other people’s quips. It’s exhausting.

The guy can write a memorable line, but he repeats himself so much that you start to wish he’d maybe allow some of the other writers on his shows to write something.

His work also gets things deeply, pointlessly wrong — no big deal in a purely fictional universe but dodgy when dealing with real events, or, in the case of “The Social Network,†engaging in the biography of a man still living. Sorkin fit the broad details of Mark Zuckerberg’s life and Facebook’s founding into the only sort of story he is interested in and able to tell. It’s well and good to say Sorkin’s sole responsibility is to entertain, but I think an obnoxious little Sorkin analogue character would probably look askance at some Hollywood screenwriter who took such liberties with the truth in the service of disposable entertainment. (On the other hand, the moral responsibilities of an artist dealing with real-world material is maybe the sort of question too thorny for Sorkin’s paper-thin characters to dispense with in a quick Act 3 speech.)

I have never been a fan. “Sports Night†had its moments — it helped that it was incredibly low-stakes, making its characters’ self-importance seem like character traits instead of extensions of the author’s self-importance — but I never cared for “The West Wing.†(I agree, more or less, with what Chris Lehmann wrote about it back in March 2001, especially his point that Bartlet’s administration was fixated on petty cultural inanities and “symbolic posturings.â€) But I understand the appeal of “The West Wing.†I can acknowledge that it was good TV.

“The Newsroom†is phenomenally bad good TV. Sam Waterston and Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer are all terrific! So is the production, and the direction, and even the editing! The show looks great. (Sorkin’s always been gifted with incredibly talented directors to help paper over his limitations — not just Rob Reiner and David Fincher, but also his longtime television collaborator Thomas Schlamme, who brought to “Sports Night†— and then “The West Wing†— the single-camera Steadicam style he developed at the single best sitcom ever about television, “The Larry Sanders Show.†Only the “talk†part of the famous Sorkin “walk and talk†is actually Sorkin’s.) It’s just a shame that all these wonderful talents are being used to animate Sorkin’s increasingly curdled and miserable worldview.

The inciting incident of “The Newsroom†is an unreasonably statistic-laden improvised tirade that Jeff Daniels’ news anchor character gives in response to a bad question at a journalism school panel. A dumb girl (dumb girls are this show’s primary villains) asks what makes America the greatest country in the world, which is the sort of question asked only by Sean Hannity, and Daniels says that it’s not: not just because of our poor infant mortality rate but also (and much more importantly) because as a society we no longer revere “great men.†This is the same idiotic nostalgia that inspires your typical David Brooks column, but in this world the speech is a controversial and notable thing, because Will McAvoy — the “second-most-watched anchor on cable,†apparently — is not supposed to have opinions, for some reason.

(The show is so confused about what McAvoy is and who he works for. Is McAvoy supposed to be Wolf Blitzer? He seems to be Joe Scarborough hosting a network evening news broadcast on CNN. Except he’s also very obviously Keith Olbermann.)

And then his ex-girlfriend shows up to be his executive producer, and in order to create a more perfect news broadcast, they turn his show into “Countdown.†McAvoy begins yelling at Tea Party people, basically. The best part is that the entire thing takes place in the very recent past and uses real events, so that we learn how Sorkin thinks the major news events of 2010 should have been handled — and the answer is always that the equivalent of a week’s worth of research and reporting should have been accomplished in the two hours before that night’s show.

“You are a smart, talented guy who isn’t very nice,†says a chatacter to McAvoy, and while the show takes great pains to show us that McAvoy is an asshole with a heart of gold, it’s clear that at this date Sorkin thinks being smart and talented is a license to be not very nice. His style hasn’t changed, but a meanness has infected sunny Sorkinland, which is what I think his former fans find so off-putting about “The Newsroom.â€

It’s never been clear that Sorkin has much respect for his audience (never forget the post-9/11 “West Wing†episode in which the kindly president and his brilliant, hard-working staff, led by Sorkin stand-in character Josh Lyman, literally explain the roots of terrorism to teenagers), but he at least used to give lip service to the idea that people who aren’t brilliant middle-aged white men deserve some measure of respect.

The hero, now, is a man who calls a date a “bitch†for caring about reality-TV stars, and his creator is a man who said this to a newspaper reporter: “‘Listen here, Internet girl,’ he says, getting up. ‘It wouldn’t kill you to watch a film or pick up a newspaper once in a while.’â€

That’s what Sorkin thinks of basically every woman and every person under 50. He hates everything frivolous — “frivolous†is womanly things like gossip and fashion and television not created by Aaron Sorkin but explicitly not, say, sports — and McAvoy’s war on frivolity extends to what Jane Fonda’s network owner refers to as “human interest†material on, say, obesity. (Which is obviously, in our reality, a very real and complex problem, but whatever.) The villain of episode 4 is a lady gossip columnist (well, her and the lady owner of the network). This is a pretty fundamental misreading of the purpose and history of “the news,†which is not actually wise men sternly lecturing you about what you need to know even if you don’t care about it. In episode 2, Mortimer kills the outgoing producer’s “The Day in YouTube†segment — it’s not NEWS!! — as if comics, crosswords and box scores didn’t sell newspapers during the couple decades of objective mass news reporting we now look back on as a golden age.

Things get sillier when the network brass begins getting upset: Apparently humiliating Tea Party freaks in live debate is … horrible for ratings, for some reason? And this makes network owner Jane Fonda threaten to fire McAvoy. “He humiliated congressional candidates on my network,†she says at Sam Waterston, as if that were a thing someone who owned a cable news network would be mad about. Oh no, people might turn off this news channel that has politicians being humiliated, routinely, by the world’s smartest asshole! (Then, hilariously, the Koch brothers are invoked. “Do not come down on the Kochs without checking upstairs,†Fonda orders — because, again, this show is hitting the same notes as MSNBC’s primetime programming in 2010.)

While I certainly agree with him on many of the particulars, Sorkin’s overall critique of contemporary journalism makes no sense, at all. The news started sucking because of ratings and also because no one any longer had enough “guts†to report the news properly. McAvoy’s big episode 3 “apology†(for not being a GREAT NEWSMAN over the last couple of years) blames ratings chasing, and ratings chasing alone, for the supposed decline in the quality of televised news. McAvoy suggests that the evening news should be done as a public service, required by Congress to be aired without advertising as a condition of using the public airwaves, which sounds very nice at first, like most of Sorkin’s characters’ common-sense ideas. But think about it for 10 minutes and it falls apart. The networks use the revenue from ads to invest in the reporting of news, which is expensive, and if they had to do it for free, it’s reasonable to assume they wouldn’t spend much on the product. The evening news would be an intern reading the newspaper aloud.

Sorkin has no interest in the process of news gathering, though. We hear much cred-establishing talk about new producer MacKenzie McHale’s time covering war zones, but “News Night,†chasing after the same Tea Party bullshit as every other show was that summer, never does foreign news. The one moment of reporting on display in the show’s first episodes involves a scoop falling, unbidden, into the lap of a producer — so Sorkin’s ideal news show is just a show that presents the commentary he wants to hear. And most Americans already have a show, or shows, that present the commentary they want to hear.

The thing with “The West Wing†is that the fantasy was legitimately better than the reality — these were smarter, better people than their real-life counterparts, working together at a better White House than the one we had. The problem with “The Newsroom†— and it was also the problem with “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,†Sorkin’s truly bizarre show about brilliant heroic men creating an epically unfunny and preachy version of “Saturday Night Live†— is that the supposed better alternative it presents is patently inferior to the real thing. The revamped “News Night†is a mess, hosted by a man who combines an exaggerated version of Olbermann’s self-importance with Scarborough’s smugness. And he spends a lot of time shouting at Republican candidates and, for some reason, talking about Sarah Palin. (So I guess it’s “Hardball)

Sorkin will not take my critique particularly seriously, because it is on a computer screen instead of being sternly said by a white man with a television show (though the fact that I am a man means I’m probably much more likely to get through to him, Internet hack or no), but hilariously enough, HBO is paying him millions to dramatize blog posts from two years ago. This is what his show is: The totally correct opinions he would have had about various things, back in 2010, spoken aloud by some of America’s finest working actors, grafted onto a workplace rom-com about incredibly unpleasant men. The fantasy fulfillment that Sorkin has made his artistic aim is revealing an increasingly grim fantasy.

I love the typical, fast, over-dialogued, self righteous, hyperbolic pace of a Sorkin-written show as much as the next man...but JEEZ.

Edit: I loved SportsNight though.

The Newsroom was hit by layoffs today: The Daily reports that Aaron Sorkin has fired most of his writing staff, which consists of under ten people. "They're not coming back, except for Sorkin's ex-girlfriend ," said The Daily's source. Sorkin is known to be a very hands-on writer who scripts or co-writes every single episode, so it's unclear whether the laid-off staffers will be replaced or whether Sorkin will go it (mostly) alone. But what of Gideon Yago, we ask? Whither Gideon?

Way to salvage the episode after that horrific Valentine's Day argument. Seriously, what workplace allows for so many ridiculously open personal arguments in the middle of the bullpen?
It's still awkwardly shoehorning in the relationship stuff amidst info Sorkin wants people to know (Wisconsin/Koch Bros, Glass-Steagall) but he's still not presenting it in a way that people who didn't want to listen before would suddenly listen now. Honestly, I'd rather just watch documentaries on each of these items and how they were actually covered. (I think I've mentioned this before but I've always wanted a new show called "Yesterday's News" that covered how stuff like this was handled by different networks or mediums.)

Also, speaking of the fictional element, the jump in time is making the relationships a bit jarring. Pill's character went from being pissed at her boyfriend and broken up about her roommate sleeping with Jim to being back in love with her boyfriend and forcing Jim to go out with her roommate on V-Day.

I was hoping that Will was going to pull out a tape recorder and not his checkbook when he reached into his pocket while meeting with Nina Howard. I'd have liked to see him take out Jane Fonda's attack dog. (Also, loved the casting on the asshole morning guy. The guy from Veronica Mars is quickly becoming a That Guy! for pricks on TV.)

This episode had a lot going on but felt the least energetic. Even the kidnapping seemed more about people feeling bad about risking dude's life than it was about Khaled's life being at risk.

When they keep the relationship bullshit to a minimum, it's a great show.

Olivia really shined and her scene with Sam Waterson was great stuff.

Also really dug the scene with Will and the Rick Santorum aide.

The only thing that I really didn't like was Don asking Sloan about Maggie out of the blue.

That shit made absolutely no sense.

2- Terry Crews' "when are we gonna get busy" line directed at Mackenzie. What the fuck was that? He would've been canned on the spot for sexual harassment. I'm mad no one peeped this yet. Unless there is something I'm missing here? And if there is please inform.

This was BY FAR the best episode.

Still, the writing for women is at times embarrassing. The relationship stuff is still handled poorly. The lack of any actual reporters means they have to rely on one degree of separation to get stories.

One minor thing: Will has made it known time and again that he's a Republican; how did none of the people on the show know that?

I think the biggest red flag/hurdle for the show is that the newsroom isn't strong enough to carry a full hour. Arguably the two best episodes both centered around a meeting and had flashbacks to the newsroom.

Maybe, I'm wrong, but this is what I came up with for that. I did not go back and watch every episode to make sure.

No, no really. He's a Republican. Even though almost nothing he's ever done (he even went back on his stance on illegal aliens and helped the dude with his car issue) has ever shown that he really believes in much of the conservative agenda.

I was actually hoping he'd be anti-gay marriage or have a different take on that issue (government shouldn't be in the "marriage" business.)
Just give him something different than the MSNBCers.

see this shit? pissed me right the fuck off. a guy in the tabloids with all his dating shenanigans, and you're the new black dude hitting on the white broad who's his ex? FOH. would NEVER happen. NEVER.

I have to keep in perspective this is a make believe land where people dont do shit that would happen in real life, just use real people's stories in their news segments.

sam waterston is chewing every piece of scenery he can and I fucking love it.

and Olivia Munn, who I didn't know shit about at all, has actually been damn good so far this season and held her own with an expanded role this ep.

the shrink I liked a lot too.

first ep of the show where I actually enjoyed most of show, and not just how "west wing-ish" the parts I liked were.

next week is the bin laden ep.

Now to the point where I don't even want to catch up with this show. Ugh. Maggie is an idiot, Sloan, who used to be the smart one, is now idiotic if noble. Everyone talks about how great Mac is at her job, but she also acts like an idiot.

Ugh.

Also embarrassing is the insistence that he's a Republican, when there hasn't been a single moment, outside of one anti-immigrant instance, that he's shown any Republican views in six episodes.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/aaron-sorkin-denies-firing-entire-writing-staff-hbo-controversial-newsroom-series-article-1.1127182

BEVERLY HILLS -- In a sometimes tense session with TV critics who gave mixed
reviews to his HBO “Newsroom” series, Aaron Sorkin Wednesday said it is “totally
untrue” that he fired his entire writing staff.

Or even most of it. “I love my writing staff,” he said, saying the modest
turnover at the end of the first season was routine and some writers had been
promoted.

He did say, however, that he is hiring a team of “paid consultants” to work with
him and the writing staff for the second season.

They could provide anything from policy insight to office anecdotes, he said. He
also said he will identify them once they are all hired.

Meanwhile, however, he declared it particularly untrue that he retained only
“Corinne Kinsbury” from the original writing staff. The Daily, which published
the original “firing” report, described her as “Sorkin’s ex-girlfriend.”

He said that first of all, “She’s not my ex-girlfriend. I have no ex-girlfriends
on the writing staff.”

Second, he said, “She’s a great writer and I would hate for her career to be
hindered by the idea she is there for any reason other than merit.”

Third, he said, the report spelled her name wrong, leaving out a “g” in the
middle.

Sorkin also said he disagrees “100%” with the suggestions by some critics that
he portrays women characters on “Newsroom” in a less flattering way than men.

He said both males and females sometimes look foolish or wrong, because they are
complex characters and the show has a strong comic element.

“Once you nail down their character traits – that they’re smart, they’re loyal,
they care and so on – you can have them step on as many banana peels as you
want,” he said.

Sorkin acknowledged he had read reviews of the show, some complimentary and some
not.

But, he added, “One of the things about working for HBO is that the entire show
is filmed and in the can before the first episode airs,” so he couldn’t make
adjustments if he wanted to.

Jeff Daniels, who stars in the show as anchorman Will McAvoy, said he has a
simpler means of dealing with inaccurate or unflattering media reports: He
doesn’t read them.

“No offense,” he said, gesturing to the room, “but I’ve been doing this for 36
years and there’s nothing you can tell me that will help me.”

HBO President of Programming Michael Lombardo had earlier told critics the
network loves the show, which got strong ratings and an early renewal for that
second season, which will air starting in June 2013.

I'd swipe it but it's a pretty wordy, poorly written piece. In short, after some digging, it turns out that 5 of the 8 writers on the staff won't be returning.

Not mentioned, and something that only interests me, is that the much maligned Corrine Kingsbury was one of the two mud wrestlers who inadvertently killed Blue in Old School.

Allison Pill inexplicably demanding that he dump her TONIGHT was stupid and made even more painful when she brings it up in the newsroom. I've said before that she's to Newsroom what Moira Kelly was to West Wing; character is just not working and the show will be better without her.

And six eps in and having to rely on the old "Oops, he did some sort of drugs before a big event" storyline is kind of depressing.

The show desperately needs more antagonists or just for the ones they have to show up more often.

I like the character. I just think they're using her wrong. I think they need to focus on her being good at her job, but learning how to move up the corporate ladder and making mistakes along the way. If they focused more on her career i think she'd be a much deeper character. But instead she's nothing but some chick that needs to keep her personal shit personal. The love story is absolutely killing the show. PLEASE STOP THAT WHOLE STUPID STORYLINE.

>And six eps in and having to rely on the old "Oops, he did

absolute cliche, like this whole episode was.

I get it its about 9-11, but do we need an airplane scene, a cop scene and a fire department hat to prove it?
And please God DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON THE AIRPLANE SCENE!!
That scene and this episode was a cluster fuck of epic proportions,
I get they wanted to show patriotism, but it surely go overboard with airline captains, fire dept. hat, NYPD apearance, and then the girl on the terrace's dad.

The scene with ole girl on the terrace would have been more than enough.

***EDIT***
I WAS MUCH MORE ENTERTAINED BY THE PREVIEWS OF WEEKS TO COME THAN THAT EPISODE!

Olivia Munn. I've known about her but never really seen anything she has been involved in.

Good show. Heavy handed more often than not, emotionally pandering, and nobody has any common or relationship sense outside of reporting the news, but still pretty good. Let's see, where to start:

Jeff has been acting his ass off, that's for sure

Watterson pretty much plays the same character he has for the past 20+ years, but drunk. I'm cool with that. Though I can't see him smashing anyone's teeth in (but it's funny to see his rants)

Can't complain about Munn at all. She manages the smart/hot/dorky role quite well

Dialogue is still the snappy rapid fire deal that Sorkin is known for, and most times works very well.

As noted, some interpersonal relationships work. Most, on the other hand, do not. The love triangle is kinda stupid, especially since it's spanned the better part of a year by the shows timeline. Both of 'em need to piss or get off the pot, or just drop that whole line altogether. Come to think of it, I don't really care about Will and Mac either. Yeah, their shit is deeper, yeah he saw a shrink about it for years, yeah he still loves her, blah blah blah...I just don't really care at this point.

There are a few things that don't make sense, some of which have been touched on already. WHy is Don still around if he's running 10:00? I'd think he's be working on that with his crew. Why the hell was everyone there on a Saturday? Will I understand, as he had to get his ass handed to him by Charlie for the tabloid article, BUt everyone else? I can see him taking the tea party to task, but there's absolutely no going after the democrats at all. And let's not start on Rudy. The show has a good enough foundation not to need to co-opt any emotional pull from another movie, and definitely not Rudy. That check lineup was one pandeirng ass move. Same with the airplane deal. I mean, I suppose some of that was to be expected, being we're talking about 9/11 and all, but they just happened to be on a United flight, and DOn goes frombeing pissed he can't get off the plane (which setup was already stupid) to insta-patriotoc and reverential? C'mon Sorkin, you're better than that.

Wtill as a whole, I loke it, will watch it, and look forward to the next season.

I liked how they made it a point to expose one of the girls trying to get famous out of it (tho we didn't get the big payoff of him shitting on her yet) but them repeatedly speaking on how it's so beneath them to report was one of those moments where they lean so far left it's almost distracting. To act like that incident does not merit a minute of news I just think is kind of ridiculous...

I like the TMI angle... I liked when A.Pill went off about asking Bachman what God sounds like, and Jeff Daniels just absolutely kills every episode. Exchange with Fonda by the limo was cool too

I can't be the only one who has noticed this.
Every time one of the two black newsroom characters speaks, s/he is immediately followed by the other black newsroom character.
Or every time they have a shot of one of the two black newsroom characters, it's immediately followed by a shot of the other black newsroom character.
Or every time one of the two black newsroom characters is mentioned, the other black newsroom character is immediately mentioned.
Check for yourself - this happens every single episode. Multiple times in a bunch of the episodes.

In response to Reply # 0

This show is like Will McAvoy and the Scooby-Doo gang. The reaction by Munn was completely out of character and over-the-top. Once again, Maggie is bad at her job. At the very least, I was happy to see them acknowledge the ratings.

And a friend pointed out something very telling. While Newsroom was patting itself on the back a few episodes ago for not calling Gabby Gifford's dead, what they didn't touch upon (which would have been a nice moment for supposedly Republican McAvoy) was that many networks immediately tried linking it to Sarah Palin and the Tea Party and claiming the shooter was provoked by her gun target ad (or something, can't remember exactly.) That would have been a better debate than just calling whether or not she was dead and added more to the show than the typical monologues from the Left.

That was kind of ridiculous, thinking grilling the candidates like that would work. Maybe for the general election but not a primary.

And, yet again, we have a one degree of separation to the news story du jour.

This show just isn't good. Time to tap out.

I had an in with the Red Sox; doesn't mean they'll let me play shortstop.

Nevermind that a guy who committed to attacking the tea party and the Koch Brothers probably would never have gotten a shot in the first place, ratings be damned.

But honestly, I could have overlooked that if the show didn't have another stupid NEWSNIGHT 2.0! This time we mean it! plotline and even more cringeworthy relationship scenes. (This show has more of those than Girls and Lena Dunham intended for those scenes to be awkward.)

"Listen, I think your candidates are shit so I'm going to take this debate to show how shitty they all are. Deal? No, seriously, I gave up my principles and have put together a piece of shit program for weeks so I could have the chance to pitch this to you even though everyone knows there's no chance that it'll happen. C'mon, we're friends. I know you don't have final say; hell, you aren't even going to be the most important person in our first meeting but it's a good idea. It should happen. LET ME FIX YOU!"

(Nevermind that you could have done something similar to most every candidate who has ever run for public office.)

Again, it would be much more interesting to watch a show about journalists trying to navigate the murky grey areas of modern media and the line between entertainment and news but this show doesn't do it. It's either lecturing people on what they should think or Casey Anthony.

1) I love Emily Mortimer, till this show....her character's reaction to everything is so over the top. A lot of times it puts me off to get into anything she has to say. Every reaction is almost like listening to Ray Hudson call a game. A tad too much for me.

2) Allison Pill......couldn't they cast a diff girl to play this role? She is a bad actress. The whole dynamic dragging between her, Jim Harper and Lisa, is also bad to me. Jim and Lisa could have gotten together, and the storyline will be a lot better than the dragging out stuff they are doing. The roomie has proven to be the better girl so far, unless they are trying to overtwist the story.

Third (I know), may I get more black characters doing real stuff, besides looking at their monitors....Terry Crews excluded (and his storyline could be deeper too)

I didn't watch Smash but I've heard someone on that was unbearable but almost everything about the Maggie character has been mishandled. Every scene she's in kills the momentum of the show.

Mortimer's public fights and speeches have been her character's downfall. The fight with Will was embarrassing and the opening speech was so poorly paced that three sentences in you were just waiting for the lights to come back on... which didn't happen for another three minutes or so.

She's not a bad actress. I saw her featured in the show In Treatment and she was fucking incredible. I have proof that she can act. the character they have created is just a shitty character.

The roomie is a deeper character which makes her work. Maggie has shown no depth. There's is nothing enjoyable about her. The character is wack, but trust me Allison Pill can act.

I have no problem putting this on her character. However, there is a certain spasticness with which she plays the character that, IMO makes it worse. I think some better choices might make the character more bearable.

at first it seemed like they were just gonna present Lisa as a nice girl who wasn't very bright. they seemed to have abandoned that though. i guess they're basing it on them bonding over journalism, along with maggie being unattainable. because looks and personality wise, Lisa's killing her.

she seems to give a "fed up" monologue at least once or twice an episode

i could probably youtube and example but i'm feeling lazy. it's like a couple fast sentences followed by a higher pitched fast sentence, then peaks with something like ..."and whyyyy didihavetobeso STUPID...." then tones it down, and calmly caps it off

maybe i didn't describe it right, but i'm sure y'all know what i mean

I like when it is about the news...or anything about the anchor and chasing stories....but when it goes into relationships, this show comes crashing down like a pack of cards. This finale is a perfect example of it; between the brilliance of news and stories, they just had to focus on all the relationships....quit showing me shit about Mac and Will....Mac overreacting ass makes me want to reach in the screen and choke her. Why hire an ex to your wanna be gf to write a good story about you? WTF did you think he was gonna write? Why is Mac tossing pillows and yelling about everything? Why is Olivia Munn gonna join this fucking Maggie love triangle? Why the freaking out that Jim is dating Lisa instead of Maggie? All of this made this finale almost unwatchable. Why does is there a need for a speech/monologue before each scene? They are all living in some superlative world, and it makes the characters hollow. All this, and I am only 25 mins into the finale.

Oh...BTW....whoever noted above about how when black character says something, another black one or minority character says something to follow....is absolutely correct. I noticed that a couple of times tonight.

Plus.....if Pill can act (which I do not doubt), she is not showing it in this show....she is unwatchable here, unwatchable..the character and that whole love triangle is one of the worst in recent HBO memory.

I've loved the show from the jump and - whether you liked it or not - it stayed consistent throughout.
All the "will they, won't they," good-to-great acting, all the Sorkinspeak (still not as Sorkin-y as WEST WING, which I'm very pleased about), every character's little moments.
And it's nice having a show that makes me feel good after watching it.
Can't wait for the DVD and then season 2.

Broke down and decided to watch the finale to play out the string.

I was kind of upset that Chris Messina didn't yell "You can't handle the truth!" at the end of the faked document from an informant who killed himself.

The Sex and the City monologue was a fitting finale for Maggie.

Maggie over Lisa, I can MAYBE give a pass to but Maggie over Sloan? When you know Maggie likes someone else?

Overall, this was a step in the right direction and it cements the fact that the show is always better when they play with time a bit/have flashbacks.

In response to Reply # 0

Just focus on the news.

- Sloan and Don - I vomitted a little bit in my mouth I swear.

- Mac and Wil - I really thought Wil was gonna pull the ring out of his drawer and propose.

- Will someone please just kill Maggie. PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF THE SHOW.

- Will who ever kills Maggie do the same to Lonnie What's his purpose?

- Can this show give me a minority character that I'm SUPPOSED To give a damn about. Even give Neal a life that'll count. But we could start by giving the two black people in the newsroom..NAMES!

- The RINO / Voter ID stuff was incredible...That's where this show shines focusing on the news and the stories.

- I wanna see where they go with the TMI chick. That seems like a good character.

He's great, almost everyone else is decidedly not great. Send him to LA or something and reboot the series. They could skip ahead five years (they love going months in between episodes anyway) while they're at it and get out of ripped from the headlines territory.

and even that I thought was a stretch with Leona gladly looking on which goes against everything else we've learned about her this season.

Whoever is more annoying out of Mac and Maggie (not sure which) is not just the most annoying character on the show, but the most annoying character in TV History... She starts hitting him with the magazine when he wakes up? And the pillow hitting scene of Jim, those scenes are cringe worthy. Mac is clearly going to continue to be the central character with Will, I'm accepting it, but damn, I can't imagine another actress could have been any worse.

Don and Sloan, zero interest, I think Munn has been very good on the show, and have been real impressed with her acting, but I hope they pass on making this is a storyline next season

The one thing I'd also like to see changed are those moments they show close-up's of the staffs faces when Will says something profound on his newscast... it's usually Jim or Tara's mom, but it's always awful

Will probably at least stick around for the season 2 premier, and Daniels will probably keep me around through the whole season but I'd love to see this show live up to it's potential and not keep floundering with this relationship nonsense that literally nobody who watches enjoys

Sex and the City was basically a fantasy for girls and Sorkin has said that this show is also a fantasy. I guess the difference is that he sees this as aspirational (or what should be aspirational for people, not sex, love, happiness, and fancy shoes.)

As for Maggie, she whines that My friends can't console me about my relationships at 3pm because they have a job... despite the fact that she spends most of the time at her "job" talking about her relationship.

Having the fictional character Maggie, who works at a fake news station that doesn't exist in the show, mock Carrie Bradshaw for working at a newspaper that didn't exist was the peak of the anti-meta movement.

The scene is bookended with cringe worthy cliches (the bus splash, the guy she's talking about ending up being on the bus.)

And in the scene before, she shit on her friend who she set up with the guy she liked and then get jealous but then was supportive but now wants to ruin the relationship so she can get with said guy who she then makes out with but forgets all that shit because the guy she is actually dating asks her to move in.
That's the crux of the second biggest relationship in the show and he's going to make fun of Sex and the City?

Oh, and, as I've noted before, DON TURNED DOWN OLIVIA MUNN, BRILLIANT ECONOMIST FOR MAGGIE, who he knew was hot for someone else!

the rest is fucking painful
to parrot what others are saying, the relationships drag down this show horribly

i was hoping we'd at least get a good 5-10 consecutive minutes on the RINO/Tea Party stuff. but they even parsed that into pieces with more Jim/Maggie/Don/Sloan(sloan? really?!)

i was willing to stretch my suspension of disbelief to buy that Sloan is "socially awkward". i do like her character, but now Sorkin takes a giant shit on her by making her just as needy and pathetic as all the other females on the show. She won't date because she has it so bad for Don? LOL jesus fucking christ. i don't even know how to describe how bad that scene was

i dunno if i can keep going. i'm not against watching it, but not gonna go out of my way

most of what's been said in here re: the relationships. They take this show down a huge notch. If they would just have Jim and Maggie get together, they'd eliminate about all of the bad scenes in the episodes.

I love Munn in every scene she has, except for when they added her into that dumb love square. Crews is great in his role, much better than I was anticipating.

I personally like the mix of the stuff grabbed from the headlines, let's you see things in another light. And Mckenzie has kinda grown on me, I just hate those sitcoms miscues she has when trying to make a joke.

I'm excited for a second season. I'm pretty sure Sorkin will fix the few things wrong with the show. I could see Dom heading to a rival network should he and Maggie not work out. And I'd like to see more of Charlie and Leona going head to head. Waterson is doing a great job in this show, second only to Daniels who will surely get an Emmy nod next year.

And shoutout to Dev Patel. I remember seeing him in Skins and being the best part of that show. He's doing his thing on this too, even got Tommy Haverford's girl.

In response to Reply # 0

Aaron Sorkin has used alot of the same statements that Bill uses on his show ( e.g. the republican party are The american taliban. in face this was presented in similar fashon as Bill presented it on his show)

Will McAvoy is also an old school republican since the current republican has been hijacked by the radical few. Back in the 90's Bill Maher wasn't republican but he defintely agreed with the republican's alot more. He's even stated the republicans he would have voted if the ran for president.

I just can't help connecting Bill Maher with Will McAvoy when tuning in. But I love it nonetheless.

My critque on Aaron Sorkin is sometimes his dialogue is more than a mouthful as it has always been with his scripts.
