DEAR WHITE PEOPLE
A satire about being a Black face in a white place.
Click here to help bring this film to theaters: http://bit.ly/DWPYoTu

Remember when Black movies didn’t neccesarily star a dude in a fat suit and a wig? Or have major plot twists timed to Gospel numbers for no apparent reason? No? Damn…

Well believe it or not there was a time when “Black Art-House” was a thing. When movies like Do The Right Thing, Hollywood Shuffle, and Boyz In Da Hood were breaking box office records as well as making us laugh, cry, and think in ways movies hadn’t before.

The humble producers of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, a satire about being a black face in a white place, long to bring those days back. But we can’t do it without you!

We pieced together what resources we had to make this trailer in order to entice investors for our planned million dollar feature. Armed with this trailer and your support we plan to make this film a reality. Click here to help bring this film to theaters: http://bit.ly/DWPYoTu

If you're going to open by making fun of Tyler Perry, you can't follow with a bunch of stereotypes and cliches wrapped in a "Shit Girls Say" webisode.

It almost plays like a fake trailer satirizing the films that the filmmakers claim to be trying to emulate.

I don't know. It's a fun enough web video and would serve as a strong reel for the cinematographer but it doesn't grab me as much of a movie.

People have no interest in hearing social commentary from educated black kids but sop up with a biscuit social commentary from any ole ninja from the hood who never finished high school.

Meanwhile, they have no problem with white content producers being affluent and educated (which accounts for 90% of all white filmmakers).

This is a recipe for Black Art to get dumber and dumber.

This isn't a fresh young voice; it's people calling back to the movies that were around when they and most of the people commenting here were growing up: Hollywood Shuffle, Boyz N the Hood, School Daze. And since it seems focused on harkening back to those days, it just seems to be a watered down regurgitation of those films.

What drew you to it? Why does this film need to hit theaters? What is it saying that older people haven't heard or younger people will even bother to listen to? (The trailer seems to preach to the choir as much as Tyler Perry)

which while yes is done all the time
it does do more than that using the old method to address present day issues
but a cynical view works in here
so thats all you want to see
horse to water
not going to force you to drink

>What drew you to it? Why does this film need to hit theaters?
>What is it saying that older people haven't heard or younger

a young perspective
a fresher perspective while appealing to my classic spike asthetic
which spike doesnt even do any more
and the humor

a reflection on current navigation through the so called post racial society?
this has been done now recently?
its an update and marker how far have we gotten, how far havent we gotten?

i understand lardlad being annoyed by his own generation
hes an old young man
but you guys yeah no i'm not surprised by cynicism
everything has been done before this is not a new criticism of anything

you guys must be bored with life itself
afterall its been done before

It's not just Been There, Done That. It's that the film isn't looking at the Been There and Done That and compare it to the Be Here, Doing This of today.

The perfect example is the opening scene. That's basically a modern version of the opening bit of Burn, Hollywood, Burn from Public Enemy. Except the problem isn't that it's been done before, it's that they're complaining about a black filmmaker and a black story in Red Tails and don't seem to realize that that IS progress, in a sense. (And judging from the website, it doesn't look like the filmmakers even get the difference.)

If it doesn't even address and judge the progress that has been made and whether it was good or bad, how can it talk about how far people have come? Instead this film covers the same shit that has been fodder for jokes for decades.

The post-racial debate isn't about Red Tails or Tyler Perry, it's about Girls and whether you even want white people trying to write non-white characters. It's about whether they should have to. If they should even consider it. It's about whether those characters should be defined by their race at all or if any race could have played the characters. It's the idea of whether tokenism was really ever progress and if it should stop. It's about the silent prejudice of why Girls will get a push from Judd Apatow but a black show wouldn't get the same love. It's how people now don't exclude, they just don't worry about inclusion.
(If the discussion is about Tyler Perry, it's why black people feel the need to diss one black voice in their quest to have their own voice heard.)

Saying people now need two black friends isn't fresh. The idea of The Black Friend is out of date. White kids don't even think they need black friends anymore. Obama's everyone's black friend now! We live in a time on nonchalant hipster racism and this film is about blatantly evil white frat guys that was a tired trope even in the 90's. (I mean, if you're making a comedy about changing times, at least make it about black people wondering if they need a white friend or something.)

Or if you want to get deeper, have it about someone wondering why they should even be "black" in the post-racial, cablanasian era?

Bottom line, if you told me this movie was made in the 90's, I would believe you.

Better yet, if you told me this trailer was made by a white person, I'd believe you.

30. ""Post-racial" or Post Racial would have been an interesting topic"
In response to Reply # 20

Discussing the legitimacy and problems caused by the existence of the thought that we are post-racial would be interesting and eye-opening.

If the lead girl's response to "You're being racist" was "I can't be. We're post-racial. It's all fair game, right?" Then it might be heading to something fresh. Saying, "Black people can't be racist" is a semantics discussion that been done to death.

>yet when i linked up Ta-Neishi Coate's essay from The
>Atlantic, but he made it specifically about the hollywood
>power structure that even refuses to ackowledge these
>questions, you said he wasn't saying much, lol

Uh, Coates was giving "Girls" a pass. Coates wasn't addressing any of those issues; he was saying they weren't issues because they weren't what the "artist" Lena Dunham was trying to talk about.
Coates is the same guy who says that Donald Trump and George Wallace (the infamous Governor of Alabama from the 60's) weren't racist because they just did racist things but didn't REALLY believe racist dogma. That dude's view of racism is as suspect as anyone's I've ever seen in my life. He's good a good writing style but I think his view of racism is all over the place.

Coates spent an entire article saying, "You know what. These are problems. But now that I have to face it in real life and not in the hypothetical, I'm going to give it a pass."

He did the same thing with X-Men: First Class.

>>Saying people now need two black friends isn't fresh. The

>>think they need black friends anymore. Obama's everyone's

>
>WTF

Do you really think people nowadays say borderline racist shit and say "But I have a black friend?" People are far more dismissive of race as a problem. We're post-racial! We've got a black President. That's what people think nowadays.

For instance, Lesley Arfin isn't an exception. It's not seen as wrong by many people, white and black, when she responds to complaints of Girls' whiteness with her "Precious" tweet. And many people of all races barely bat an eyelash when she writes something a ridiculous as, "Nigger" is a great word. It just packs so much punch. The two g's next to each other are like literal two G's, broin' out, tough as nails, them against the world. It gives me chills that a word can hold so much power, it really makes me feel like I chose the right profession."

For many white people, post-racial means they can say shit and not have to have a black friend to defend them. "Dear White People" plays more like a period pieces set in the 90's than something today.

>yet, just last month @ Colombia and Chicago U Black women were
>verbally and physically assualted by White frat boys, but
>because they've been discussed/depicted in 90s films, we

And the Ku Klux Klan still exists. Would this movie seem fresh if the KKK was the villain?

If you're trying to present a fresh take on modern racism, going back to the old standards of racism and not addressing the new face of prejudice seems stale. It's like saying you're going to write a film about the new globalized world and make the Nazis the bad guys.
I'm sorry that I'm not blown away by a sarcastic version of School Daze/Higher Learning or think that it is somehow of the time.

>ohh so just create the reactionary inversion film and that's
>cool?

It's fresher than making the same film. And I think it can be spun as a discussion of the modern racism which is more about including people like one's self, not actively excluding others.

And I'm not sure how "reactionary" is a bad thing since this film is supposed to be modern. The problem with this film is that it's not reactionary to new issues.

>>Or if you want to get deeper, have it about someone
>wondering
>>why they should even be "black" in the post-racial,
>>cablanasian era?
>O_o

Yep. It's the questions that get that reaction from you, and feeling that some people do feel, that make for fresh and interesting movies. Not a rehash of the tropes we've all seen before.

we agree here. i would actually like to see a Black character take the "yes we can be racist NOW, but" position. racism is about bigotry/ignorance PLUS privilege and power, so obviously certain communities of color have attained this now. not as a "totality", but in specific enclaves and within certain individuals, but that's a whole other convo

uhh no he wasn't giving her a pass. he was stating that we shouldn't expect white people to write for/about us, nor should we expect them to do so accurately when they do. Coates was pointing to the more endemic problem of the lack of voices of color in cinema saying something about how Hollywood operates and understands audiences who buy tickets. it goes beyond Black/other(ed)-writers of color creating new Black/other(ed) narrative/stories, but that we can't even get them to cast people of color in roles that are not race specific. Quick example, a film like Inception, why was that whole cast white? none of those character's trajectories where dependent on race. yet Hollywood continues to cast movies as though this is 1950s America.

that other shit, i have not read, but it def has rubbed you the wrong way. personally Coates is one of the most skilled and insightful writers working today IMO

again no. they vacillate between both extremes, generally related to their age. if anything Obama has made older White folk more comfortable in voicing their strident racism.

>For many white people, post-racial means they can say shit and
>not have to have a black friend to defend them. "Dear White

you must've not gone to a predominately white college. which points to what i said below. young college kids of color on tumblr are reblogging this trailer like its a bath salts story because you know they actually still have to deal with non-post-race racism as they attain their educations.

how do i even respond to this? The Klan does not need its face in modern cinema because they are looked at as caricatures and things of the past. white frat boys harassing and assaulting students of color is still very real. dick head moron racist frat boy isn't a pastoral experience of a white militia terrorizing communities of color. it's about affluent children of a racist society carrying on tradition. but see it the way you'd like

>

simple answer: being reactionary is a bad thing. usually involves emotion over analysis, dogma over dialogue, and stasis over process.

Admittedly, I'm jumping the gun but unless this was one of the few pitch reels that doesn't show the most intriguing and insightful elements of a film, I think it might be in trouble.

As others have said, it seemed like discussions from a decade or two ago and it's disappointing because I think the current era of casual racism/insensitivity is a really rich topic that has gone almost completely untapped.

Also, the website's mission statement and opening scene just came off as so pompous and unnecessary that I immediately held them to a higher standard and I (and many people here) didn't believe they lived up to it.

>we agree here. i would actually like to see a Black character

That's one of the convos that I think needs to happen on film.

I feel like you contradicted yourself there because I see Girls as you see Inception. You could have made any of the characters IMO non-white and it wouldn't have changed the show. Entitlement isn't just a white issue.
My biggest beef with the casting wasn't that it ended up as a white cast but that Dunham said it was accidental; they didn't even realize how bad the first episode (with the only non-white characters being the asian girl who was good with computers and the black homeless dude) was kind of whitewashed. With the paucity of opportunities for non-white actors still being troubling, I think everyone has to keep their minds open during casting. "Oops, we didn't even notice!" isn't an excuse, it's pretty much the epitome of the problem.

>that other shit, i have not read, but it def has rubbed you
>the wrong way. personally Coates is one of the most skilled
>and insightful writers working today IMO

Yeah, he actually banned me from comments from the Atlantic site (and deleted my last comment) when I called him on it so I'm still salty.
He's a strong writer, I just think some of his views are shockingly flawed. Defending George Wallace and Donald Trump as not racist despite his admitting that they do racist things still is mind boggling to me.

>you must've not gone to a predominately white college. which
>points to what i said below. young college kids of color on
>tumblr are reblogging this trailer like its a bath salts story
>because you know they actually still have to deal with
>non-post-race racism as they attain their educations.

I went to Syracuse which was pretty separated racially. Shockingly and depressingly so IMO. But my friends and I started a fraternity and sadly, the old fashioned racism was still out there and I have no delusions that it'll ever go anywhere but I think the newer, more casual racism that was just starting up when I was in school is a far more interesting, timely topic.
But also, after being in a fraternity and seeing what my black friends had to weigh when considering joining it and some of the shit they had to put up with (and that they allowed to happen) if/when they did join is one of those untold stories and I'm always let down when you just see white frat boys as stock villains and the black character's decision being a fairly simplistic us or them.

And I'm not saying that none of the same issues still exist. I just think having the same discussions can stymie progress. Like maintaining the "Black people can't be racist" trump card.
Also, from the trailer, it just seems like this was more the kind of video that would resonate with people but I wasn't seeing anything that would make people think or question. Again, preaching to the choir will always resonate and get retweets but I'd rather have something challenging. And maybe this movie is. I don't know. I just don't think a satirical movie about white frat guys throwing a racist party that starts a race riot on the campus is gonna get there.

>simple answer: being reactionary is a bad thing. usually
>involves emotion over analysis, dogma over dialogue, and
>stasis over process.

Ah. I can get that. I just think the White Friend comedy (it would be more of a web short) could be more than that. Although I'm sure it's been done before.

here and on GD, us predominately older Black/people of color can see the links to older movies like School Daze etc. and it seems for yall that's a turn off.

but on tumblr 18-25 yrs old, many of the black/people of color are reblogging in spasmatic glee... i think that says something.

we have a reference that they don't, yet unlike most of you it's not a turn off to me. it seems interesting and could be funny.

and in biting, make something funny and original (what's The Big Lebowski but a comic Carver novel?)

So if these folks are biting Spike and Singleton (among others), and happen to make something funny? Good for them, and I hope they continue to have a good career.

you talking about things that may or may not have been addressed on a message board...
has having "done this"

really folks?

for that matter school daze was old when spike thought of making it
black people knew about hbcu life decades before the movie came out

you guys really dont have a point here
again

ok so none of you saw avengers or chronicle or prometheus
or will be seeing spiderman or dark knight
no one must be watching game of thrones or true blood
after all this was all done in book form why watch a show about it...

or does this only apply to race?
or only black movies?

you really just typed that shit like it meant something
yall are an old and cynical trip

ok i'm back again because i'm cracking up
dude really just...

bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
it was addressed on a message board so the movie doesnt need to be made
the basis of most hollywood and indie movies a century if not decades old concepts
and this dude said a message board addressed it...
bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Had there been a movie about it before that time? You have to admit that this movie plays like a greatest hits of those older movies, which leads to...

>ok so none of you saw avengers or chronicle or prometheus
>or will be seeing spiderman or dark knight
>no one must be watching game of thrones or true blood
>after all this was all done in book form why watch a show
>about it...

Spider-man is the closest example here and it is getting SLAMMED for the "Why do I want to hear this story again?" complaint. Avengers had never been made into a film, Prometheus was a completely different take. To a lesser extent, so were Dark Knight, Chronicle.
The reaction here is more like the Why? response to the shot-by-shot remake of Pyscho than those other films. It's the reason The Thing was met with a ho hum, who gives a shit response.

It's not that people are going to dismiss any movie about race; again, it's that this film brings no fresh look at any of the issues. It doesn't even seem to bring up more modern issues. It doesn't take a look at if from a different vantage point. Replace Tyler Perry with Driving Miss Daisy and you could have convinced me that this film was made in the 90's.
In fact, it seems to have less depth than Do the Right Thing because at least there Sal had a legit argument with his wall being what it was whereas the riot apparently starts in this film because of an obviously racist party.

This film preaches to the choir and that's fine if that's what you want to hear but don't get mad at everyone else when they aren't moved, don't want to listen to it, or don't think you're being fresh, insightful, or relevant when you're doing so.
I could see your issue if people were saying, "Fuck this movie, it should never get made." But we're not. We're saying, "I have no interest in seeing that movie. Pass."

again there is nothing new under the sun

but somehow the buck stops here?

That's what you keep ignoring. Like Mynoriti said, if you bite something but put a fresh perspective on it, you get a pass and people might check it out.

If you bite it and add no fresh perspective, most people will just pass on it.

Again, Spider-man is facing all of these same questions. This isn't something that only happens to films about race.

every movie after this will now be jonah hill lost weight

and yes it literally a remake of a damn tv show
20 years old
on top of being rehashed garbage having jonah hill in it
just another movie that has jonah hill in it
it about white dudes
trying to be funny
yeah this is a fresh take
no

if you get to hyperbolize unrealistically about a movie you havent seen
i get to hyperbolize quite realistically about a movie that did badly
you had the nerve to see
then have the audaciyt to come in here and talk about the "not fresh"
i betta not see a mofo in here up in dark knight pt 3
and not say how thats not fresh

In response to Reply # 61

Now you're complaining that it's exactly the same!

Nevermind that the plot in the film hinged on the fact that time's had changed and kids have different attitudes than 10 years ago.

And Jonah Hill's The Sitter went wood because everyone saw the trailer and said, "Adventures in Babysitting with Jonah Hill. Pass."

I mean, I pretty much hated Prometheus but even I wouldn't say that it was the exact same thing as Alien. I don't like Jonah Hill but I'm not sure how you can say Superbad was exactly the same as Cyrus was exactly the same as Get Him to the Greek (which were his only other leading roles.) That argument just shows obstinance over objectivity.

We need those movies, but the cynic in me says they are uber rare.

Imho in the history of film only one movie has ever done a good job(and id love to be proved wrong); Do the Right Thing. The rest of those late 80's early 90's movies came off as 'ghetto-porn'...alot of the later critiques leveled at Precious you could lay on the Boyz, etc...those movies have not aged well, lol.

That said, I don't see why people are hating at people giving it another go, especially the independent route. For all our bitching and whining of lets say Girls the way she got on was filing 'Tiny Furniture' on cheap and doing the festival circuit. Like Basiglia pointed out let support it now then trash the fuck out of it later, lol.

it hasnt stopped any one from seeing their movies
and esp not the white navel gazing indie world
but now we are going to draw the line?

lemme go look at that post to see the cries of but we've seen a white man save gotham a bajillion times why are they doing this again?

The worst thing that could happen to them is to lose this momentum they've built by people saying, "Well, it's at 25k, they're all good." They still have a hill to climb. It's definitely looking good but they should try to milk this buzz for all it's worth.

They've had a great start but movies have been much further along and fallen apart. Can't let up just because they raised enough to do a table read.

the lead girl i didn't know too well. i worked with her at the campus bookstore. can't really say we're cool. her name is slipping my mind right now, to be honest. i find it hilarious to see her playing a militant. fucking hilarious.

the brother with the white girlfriend is my nigga Brandon, though. he always been a pretty boy actor nigga, but he's one of the coolest cats you could meet.

i wish the both of them luck.

i'm not in no rush to see this joint, though.

how quaint.

i don't care how many whiteboys knock out Sicky Fingaz and how many UPN shows Fredro be on. their music is dope.

and i ain't going to deny homegirl her militant turn. it's just a stark contrast from how she presented herself on campus. there was like one ridiculous bigblakafrika nigga on campus when we were in school, and that was me, getting ostracized for it. now niggas is making movies off it. haha

All yall seen is a fund raising trailer and folks have already written it off? The hate is strong in these forums. What happened to supporting black cinema?

Not saying you have to love it from get but I would think it would make sense to reserve the hate to when you actually know that its bad.

75. "When has any trailer been posted here and not gotten instant reaction?"
In response to Reply # 74

Especially one that opens by saying that it's attempting to bring back "Black Art House" and the likes of Do The Right Thing, Hollywood Shuffly, and Boyz 'n The Hood. I mean, that's setting a pretty high standard there. (And takes an unnecessary, tired jab at another black filmmaker.)

I'd also add that the hate has less to do with the reaction to the film and more to do with being told that one's opinion is wrong. Most people just weren't interested in the trailer; happens all the time.

83. "The Birth Of 'Dear White People'"
In response to Reply # 0
Wed Jun-20-12 01:22 AM by lfresh

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/justin-simien/dear-white-people_b_1598095.html

Perhaps it was being mistaken for the one other Black guy in my office by a colleague who had worked with him for years... Or perhaps it was being asked repeatedly by co-workers to teach them the Single Ladies Dance? Either way something provoked me to go on Twitter as @DearWhitePeople two years ago and start tweeting things like:

"Dear White People. The single ladies dance is dead. Please turn off your web cams and go on about your lives."

Meant to articulate the sometimes funny, mostly harmless, but occasionally painful experience of being a Black face in a vastly white place (i.e. most Hollywood work environments) @DearWhitePeople also served an ulterior motive of mine.

I'd been working for some time on a satire about race identity. The feature script for Dear White People follows the events leading up to a race riot a prestigious predominately white university through the perspectives of four very different Black students. While the script was culled from my
own college experiences and those of others I knew, I wanted to test out the voice of my lead character, Sam White, whose radio show "Dear White People" gives the film its title.

Sam, a kind of amalgamation of Dap from School Daze and iconic activist Angela Davis had a lot to say and I wanted to know what resonated with people.

As I charged through several drafts of the script, feedback from the twitter account would make its way into the project. Tweets that asked how I would feel if there was a "Dear Black People" prompted responses such as:

"Dear White People, there's no need for a Dear Black People. Reality
shows on VH1 and Bravo let us know exactly how you feel about us."

It's a line that survived all the way into the current draft of the feature script as well as the concept trailer we released on Wednesday to raise Pre Production funds. With 80K views, $10K raised, and a flurry of comments generated within just a 24 hour period it would seem that this line and few
others have struck a nerve!

There are some defensive knee jerk reactions to the phrase "Dear White People" and I get it. No one wants to be called racist, and some folks are still waking up from the fantasy that having a Black president means America has somehow become "Post-Racial." (By the way, if the "birther movement" and the tragedy involving Trayvon Martin hasn't sobered you up yet, just check out the Youtube comments section for the Dear White People trailer).

The truth is, my film really isn't about "white racism" or racism at all. As I see it racism is systemic and is inherently reflected in any honest story about life as a minority in this country. What my film is about however is identity. It's about the difference between how the mass culture responds to a person because of their race and who they understand themselves to truly be.

I'm a tall, occasionally funny, and perhaps baby-faced Black man. There is a distinct difference between my interactions with someone whose closest cultural cue to what I am is Will Smith (if I'm lucky) and those with someone who's last impression of a Black person involved watching an episode of Cops or even worse Maury Povich.

These impressions easily turn into the way I'm treated, the level of respect I'm given, expectations placed on me and in some cases opportunities denied. (I could expound, but that's probably better served in a different post. Or better yet just read the brilliant "Who's Afraid of Post-Black America"
by Touré).

Culture is ubiquitous. From the time a person is born, television, movies, cliques in school and Abercrombie and Fitch ads subtlety suggest to them on a subconscious level who they should and should not be due to their race, gender, looks and sexual orientation (just to name a few). Identity is a powerful concept. It can open up potential and it can severely limit it.

While there are countless cultural cues for white men in particular being constantly fed to the culture, being a minority with ambition often means being the only minority in the room. And sometimes in my case patiently explaining that while I am a filmmaker who happens to be Black I have absolutely no desire to be the "next Tyler Perry."

With the continued support for Dear White People, I sincerely hope to feed at least one more complex and nuanced story to the culture. And while I am truly humbled and overwhelmed by support for the project we've got a long way to go. Hit me up Hollywood! Check out the trailer below:

I would've thought you'd take the chance to get someone else excited for this.

With that said she hasn't produced anything that really gets me excited or than Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan. It's cool she gave shine to John Singleton and Robert Rodriguez or than that...*shrugs*

As for the movie itself, if I get a press screening, dope, otherwise I can wait till this comes on Netflix Instant Stream or HBO. It looks alright.

I'm curious...

And, Stephanie Allain producing? I think that kinda puts a legtimate stamp on the project...

but, they might want to dial down on "bringing Black Art House movies back", because Ava DuVernay and various others will say it never left...

but, now I want to see what the finished product looks like...

I mean, its good to boast on a product, but don't shit on the motherfuckers who paved the WAY for your asses to do this...

cause, yea, Ava DuVernay, Dee Rees, Spike Lee, etc. need to have a word with you (and a few backhands to the face too...)

so they can miss me with that "bringing black art house films back" motif cause it's bullshit.

but, they're young and stupid..and didn't do their homework.

Looks a little cliche, but hell i'm excited to even see some black college shit that isn't higher learning.

I hope that the full movie stays away from super cliche shit, but by already mentioning some of the greats they're setting themselves up for a let down.

I'll support it though, I just wish they'd change the fucking title and try and broaden their scope a bit.

Black people who exploit their blackness,"differentness"
(usually meaning education and appreciation of stuff not
typically associated with black people...sci-fi, comics, etc)
and the white guilt of hipsters to make art are fucking coons.

Period.

Its basically the new version of the tragic mulatto narrative
in American literature. Like the tragic mulatto tradition,
black hipsters highlight/whine about/joke about how different
and special they are and do it, again, to white guilty people
who will feel sorry for them (and pay for tickets or
fund movies).

This type of black hipster isn't interested in a black audience,
mostly because there is more money in guilty white patrons
than with regular black folks. They also know that regular
black folks will call these ass clowns for what they are:

Ass clowns.

This is why Tyler Perry is infinitely more brilliant than
any black hipster in the game: He doesn't rely on white guilt,
like, at all. He makes shit that people enjoy.

Perry also isn't making art to fill some gap in his self
esteem that requires that he be acknowledged. "Look at me,
I'm special and black" artwork does this dumb shit to the
ground and its awful.

This project is embarrassing and shameful. As an educated
black man, I'd rather watch House of Payne 30,000 times than
this trite dumb shit.

Takes a coon to know a coon doesn't it?

Actually their audience is each other but i'm sure you're welcome to come view a different perspective, a reminder is sorely needed from time to time. As for clowns again takes one to know one tyler perry knows the costumes he parades around in arent to be taken seriously only thing hes serious about is the money. Don't get it twisted now the puffy of cinema can give a shit about what people enjoy he only cares to promote his vanity and put more dollars in his pocket. *shrug* If you admire brilliance at making money have at it but dont try to take it as anything different than Tyler's look at me i'm blackity blackblackblack...in a dress and if people want to present a different view of a black woman, man, youth, generation, slice of society no need to get all hurt up about it no one is taking away your house of payne BET VH1 and Tyler are going to be there no worries. No is trying to stop your sadly educated black ass from watching your favorite man prance around as a granny shoot i enjoy it as well from time to time. You sound threatened though...i understand.

Thing is those 'tragic mulattos' that are trying..nope going to get their voices heard, arent whining. That's what really seems to be hurting your feelings, they are stomping on your precious narratives the monetary juggernaut you hold near and dear. They came out swinging, hard too. Difference between you and me though this isnt that precious to me but i'm not going to be a hypocrite about this and act like there is a chasm of difference and hold one higher than the other. I'll let them and you have that illusion i'm here for the variety and entertainment trite and dumb i'll watch this and that because again there room for both and my feelings arent hurt over it.

Perspective dictates this all only benefits me as a black audience member.
You should try some perspective.

http://www.indiewire.com/article/congrats-to-dear-white-people-indiewire-tribeca-film-institutes-project-of-the-year

Congratulations to Justin Simien, whose "Dear White People" has been designated the first-ever Indiewire Project of the Year!
He and another member of his filmmaking team will be heading to the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival to participate in the Filmmaker/Industry Meetings hosted by the Tribeca Film Institute.

In case you forgot, here's the pitch that helped "Dear White People" snag the prize:

Remember when Black movies didn't neccesarily star a dude in a fat suit and a wig? Or have major plot twists timed to Gospel numbers for no apparent reason?

The humble producers of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, a satire about being a black face in a white place, long to bring those days back.

The film follows four black students at a predominately white Ivy League where a popular "African American themed" party takes place. Through their unique perspectives the film tackles race identity in "post-racial" America while weaving a universal story of forging one's unique path in the world.

To read more about the project, click here.

Typically only open to Tribeca Film Institute grantees, the Filmmaker/Industry meetings are a great place for filmmakers to be linked with sales agents, co-producers, and mentors. Here's the official description of the event:

Every year during the Tribeca Film Festival, TFI holds their Filmmaker/Industry Meetings for their newly-minted grantees. As a networking forum, the Filmmaker/Industry Meetings encourage the discovery of new projects by introducing industry participants to a carefully curated group of narrative and documentary filmmakers (as well as content creators) participating in TFI programs, including: Tribeca All Access, the TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund, the TFI Documentary Fund, the TFI Latin America Media Arts Fund and the TFI New Media Fund. Over 150 people participated in the Filmmaker/Industry Meetings in 2012, and many grantees came out of the two-day event having secured broadcast deals, outreach partners and/or development deals.
