Michael has the martial art skills and needs to be redeemed for Spawn.

Chiwetel is in the same boat except he's a better suited actor to probably pull of the royalty part of T'Chala. Well overall he's a better actor than Michael Jai.

If you take a chinese baby and raise it in the U.S. that does not erase the 'chinese' from their gentic code.

like, not at all.

MJW is african. He may not be FROM Africa, nor raised there, but he's african.

On second thought, he's kinda "old" by Hollywood standards too.

Djimon's always been the one in my mind, but I do think he's too old now. He could be T'Chaka though.

But I seriously think there need to be more names in this discussion. Who are the younger imposing black actors? Are there any?

Do you need a "name" Black guy to play Black Panther, or can you get the Black equivalent of Chris Evans (Captain America)?

If you don't, Nate Parker is my choice. He can actually act, he starred in a much-maligned action film, and hell, why not elevate him to the level of movie star?

Who is Black Panther's nemesis? Who should play THAT role?

The original Cap movie story was better IMO, and that was
Cap was tested with a more refined serum that a lot
of black soldiers were tested with ala Tuskegee experiment
and he had to rescue some of the black soldiers, Bucky
being one of them

Was probably a hard story to tell, so they kept it
simple

My guess is knowing they'd do a BP movie made them feel
better about abandoning that angle

Relatively young without being teenage, amazing screen presence, intense AND charming. He might be a little short next to Hemsworth and them, but he's been an actor I've had my eye on for a while.

If they want to go older and more experienced, Hounsou or White would both be awesome.

My major concern is that the action scenes are credible. BP isn't particulary 'charming' so I don't need a charming lead, but I do need someone who can portray confidence/competence/power and gravitas.

W/actors who seem 'young' I worry about them being able to have the last two.

he has to have enough of a presence that you buy he could be not only the brilliantly competent King of the arguably most powerful country on the planet

you also have to have someone who if push came to shove won't take any crap from ANYBODY (recall: He punked Stark pretty soundly and Namor, Dr. Doom are leery of him)

In response to Reply # 35

All this searching for someone Afircan enough or kung fu enough is so redundant when it comes to ACTING. Black Panther wears a MASK, being able to spin crescent kick 10 feet in the air is not even on the list of concerns to those casting. Any actor can TRAIN and learn enough finesse moves to look the part on screen in fight scenes, oh but what am I saying, BLACK PANTHER WEARS A MASK IT WONT EVEN BE THE ACTOR IN THESE SCENES.

David Oyelowo has displayed enough range to show that he could competently exude a character such as Black Panther who is not only an extraordinary combatant but is a brilliant king as well.

Plus Chiwetel looks like a fucking wimp and has always played somewhat wimpy characters in all his films.

Michael Jai White is too brutish and stale to lead a film.

Also, 'training' actors to fight, almost always looks bad. However, Frank below says dude looked competent in the fight scenes, I trust him, so I'm cool on that.

I will say, the cat does look a lil' young tho. Especially to be the head of state/high priest of Wakanda.

*edit*
Oh, I agree w/you on Chiwetel, BTW. It's not that he looks wimpy, but he definitely doesn't look scary/tough.

Even though he wasn't punching dudes out, he was fierce in Red Tails, and on the prowl in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, he had extreme intensity without being one-note.

He's also extremely charismatic and handsome. Very few actors can flip from charm to scary intensity like Oyelowo can.

T'Chala shouldn't be much older than 30 at most, get rid of all these old ass dudes that can't do their own stunts.

My choices would be:
John Boyega (Attack the Block)
Elijah Kelly (Red Tails) or
Nate Parker (The Great Debaters and Red Tails)

On The Lookout 4:

He's got the look, and he looked believable in ALVH. If he bulks up a bit. He'd be a good fit, IMO.

He's corny and not the kind of guy you make the lead in a movie you want that movie to be not only successful, but actually good.
