Boogie Nights put him in that category for me. The Master is probably my most anticipated film this year.

In response to Reply # 17

Mainly Haruki Murakami fans are in the know cause it was a film adaptation of his bestselling book but this is Greenwood's best work to date in my opinion. Greenwood is in a more soft sounding, almost melodramatic orchestral mood in this one, as opposed to the syncopating beats and ramped up tension in PTA's film (equally awesome).

I'm sitting here trying to figure out how that could relate to the scientology stuff, and I just don't see it at all. Either way, I'm extremely interested.

Note how this military debriefing/inspection resembles a scientology audit.

It ends on the officer saying he'll help Phoenix remember a forgotten incident. So much if Scientology is geared around coerced "remembering" things suppressed and from past lives.

The story goes that Jeremy Blake (who did the abstract hallucination stuff in Punch Drunk Love) and his fiancée committed a mysterious suicide that may have been provoked by Scientology harassment. PTA took their deaths to heart and that's allegedly when the roots of this script started. Vanity Fair wrote a phenomenal piece on the whole Blake story a few years back, right here:

…for anyone who doesn’t know, Al Rose was the old-timey estate agent in There Will Be Blood. Very cool. There is only one more video on his channel promoting midnight shows for There Will Be Blood around the time of its release in 2007.

L Ron was a former naval officer and the experience heavily influenced the structure of his church (Sea Org, etc.).

It looks like Phoenix's character is a former navy guy as well.

There's a boat, river, and a beach in the two trailers. A Master is also an (antiquated, admittedly) naval rank.

So I expect a lot of water in this movie.

deadline.com/hollywood:

>Weinstein Shifts ‘The Master’ To Sept. 14th

By THE DEADLINE TEAM | Friday July 27, 2012 @ 5:57pm PDT

The Weinstein Company has confirmed moving Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master to a limited opening on September 14 from its original date October 12. The movie will add theaters on September 21.

Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as the charismatic central figure of the movie, which some have suggested is a thinly veiled take on Scientology but Anderson has said it is not. Amy Adams and Joaquin Phoenix also star.

Additionally Weinstein is moving the Brad Pitt drama Killing Them Softly to October 19 from September 21. The Master now will be opening against the wide releases of Disney/Pixar’s remastered-in-3D Finding Nemo and Sony/Screen Gems’ Resident Evil: Retribution. Other movies opening in limited release September 14 will be Summit’s The Perks Of Being A Wildflower, IFC’s Liberal Arts and UTV’s Barfi!

Director Andrew Dominik and Pitt’s Killing Them Softly will be up against a pair of other wide releases October 19, Alex Cross from Summit and Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 4 plus IFC’s The Loneliest Planet and Paramount Vantage’s Not Fade Away.

They told people after a screening of The Shining to stick around if they wanted to see something special. Maybe they stayed for that, maybe they saw PTA/Maya skulking about, or maybe the Weinsteins leaked to them that it was going down.

Either way, a slew of folks saw it last night.

General word I've read is it's more inaccessible and strange than TWBB, with fewer memorable one-liners for the public to cling to-- "a fever dream," one person called it. Apparently people think this movie isn't destined for box office as a result... at least upon initial pre-rewards release.

Still, everyone who saw it loved it, singling out Adams as doing the best work of her life and Phoenix as a potential Oscar lock. Folks aren't sure whether PSH would be nominated in lead or supporting, but obviously great work from him.

I really only read five or six brief thoughts on the film and then thought, "Nope! I'm good! Don't need any more!"

The first time, I really enjoyed it. The second time, it was a fucking chore to sit through. Other than PSH who has the best performance to me and Joaquin Phoenix, there ain't much else there. Everyone I've talked to says it's missing something and I agree that it doesn't achieve what it sets out to do. There Will Be Blood is much better.

*EDIT* Saw it in 70MM both times. I wish more films would shoot in 70MM. The contrast in the picture is incredible.

I agree with bwood in that it's missing something, and that's a story. That's a plot. That's a narrative to give these characters something to latch on to.

Loved the performances from Joaquin Phoenix and PSH, as well as the humor and the boobs, but there was no narrative glue to put it and hold it altogether...

So even though I wasn't expecting There Will Be Blood 2 or More Boogier Nights!, it was a letdown for me. He's got these great characters that should be... doing stuff. And they do, but there was no connective tissue that engaged me. Maybe upon subsequent viewings I'll see something I didn't see in this first viewing... *shrugs*

He's kind of taken the disjointed style of There Will Be Blood even further here. There really isn't much of a plot and I think the middle of the movie suffers a bit because of that. It lacks the narrative momentum of PTA's earlier work and suffers a bit because of it. Phoenix and Hoffman are fantastic but Ive seen them both be better. Amy Adams is incredible too.

Still though, I was never bored and would see it again in the theater.

"A big problem with it is various things happen and go nowhere. I know its about a deeply troubled character but only because I've watched enough films to get Phoenix's character is like that. But two hours of an actor just occasionally flipping out is not character. Character is having a goal and having your actions be reflected by said goal. Your characters actions being a reflection of your characters craziness is a reflection of shoddy screenwriting."

Also, we talked about Phoenix's character Freddie sticking around for as long as he did. The character was an alcoholic drifter. Why did he stick around with Lancaster and The Cause for so long? It's not in his nature. Also. I felt they needed more people questioning or threatening The Cause cause we only get a glimpse of it in 3 scenes. I loved how Lancaster froze up and cursed up a storm whenever someone showed how full of shit his theories were.

I mean, they spell it out pretty clearly in the jail scene where Dodd says that no one likes Freddy other than him.

Dodd has given a lost soul something to cling to, and Freddy's frustrations which ensue are a result of realizing this man who has made him feel moments of peace and this man who truly cares for him might also be totally full of shit. That's perhaps Freddy's core conflict: the hope that this could anchor him vs. the sneaking realization that it's bullshit. At the end, he knows it's bullshit but still wants to be around it.

cos thats exactly how i felt about Punch-Drunk Love the first six, yes SIX times i saw it. wasn't til viewing 7ish (out of i dunno how many by now) that i fell in love with it (and it still sits at the top of my GOAT films list). his films still retain value even without narrative glue (for moi).

Not sure why people think there's no story here. We've got a couple of stories here. On the Dodd side, the love triangle between Dodd, the wife, and Freddy. On Freddy's side, we have a man coping with absurd levels of sexual neurosis learning how to live something resembling a normal life. Both stories have beginnings, middles, ends-- characters change, reveal, struggle.

This movie is WAY more intimate than PTA's silly "70mm campaign" would have you believe. It's way closer to Punch Drunk Love than anything else.

The writing is outstanding. The first procession scene is going to be one of the scenes in PTA's career people talk about forever. The very small and subtle ways you see Dodd's loneliness and inadequacy reveal itself behind the bluster, the imagery PTA creates for you early on.

It does slow down and drag a bit at the end (it does lack a traditional Act 3 that we're used to), but predominantly because we're watching Freddy's repetition in attempting to grasp onto this Cause, to find this meaning, as Dodd refuses to let Freddy off the hook, clinging to him.

I thought it was exciting filmmaking, intimate and at times poetic. Scene after terrific scene. Phoenix, Hoffman, and Adams are all terrific, but boy oh boy, Phoenix truly nails it here. I'd be surprised if we see a better leading man performance this year. His body language... like his insecurities and inadequacies and internal disease are eating himself from the inside.

It is a little less accessible emotionally than previous PTA, as The Cause is all about restraint of emotion. You don't feel that same level of emotional catharsis at the end, which is mildly frustrating, yet the final scene with Freddy and Dodd is spellbinding, as is Freddy's final scene in the film, period.

The more I think about it, the more I appreciate it. I'll likely see it again this week.

Freddie Quell has problems. He drinks. He has sexual thoughts. He gets into fights. He gets a job. Meets a girl. Drinks. Makes out with the girl. Gets into a fight. Loses his job. Then hops on a boat. Meets Dodd. Meets Dodd's fam. Makes some more liquor. And then... what? Where does the story go from there? Dodd publishes his book. They have a meeting or two. Freddie defends Dodd when someone accuses him of leading a cult. The rest was a blur to me, save the end when Freddie lets a fat British girl ride him.

There's no question I'm going to see this again, but I'm hoping this time that I can see some kind of build, some kind of storytelling momentum that I apparently missed the first time out...

It's all about guys who posture, unable to share, which makes structure a little harder to map out... but since it's essentially a character/relationship study and their lives and feelings towards one another change in pretty notable ways, I wouldn't call it flat.

PTA's definitely not playing with "likable" characters (the most likable one is probably the cult leader, lol) or easily relatable circumstances though. Even There Will Be Blood, which I rewatched tonight, you feel more for Daniel in the "I've abandoned my child" scene than you really do for the guys here for the most part. Though maybe that'll change when I take Round 2.

Great score, shot beautifully and great acting but
created too many loose ends that were never tied up.....
This movie could've been great but fell on it's face.
I had to fight the urge 2 walk out a couple of times.

I had to fight the feeling after it was over to tell
the fools standing in line that it was bullshit but since
i got had they can too. You wanna see a real cult movie check
out: Sound of my voice and Martha Marcy May Marlene, that is how it should be done.

It was shot in 65mm too....wat a waste of pretty footage

In no way is the movie The Master about the cult. That's like describing Raging Bull as "a boxing movie."

It's about sexual frustration, it's about platonic love, it's about finding one's anchor in life and attempting to seize control of something when you're riddled with fear. It's about discovering that the meaning of life you hoped for may not be what you thought it was-- do you give up? do you live in denial? do you try desperately to learn?

PTA couldn't be less interested in the way a cult works, really. I found it hilarious that most of the cult exercises were just old acting exercises (sense memory, repetition, word association, etc).

FIrst impression tho I found it more engaging than There Will Be Blood even if it drags a bit towards the end (though I love the final scenes).

I think a problem with the film is that you get so wrapped up in the amazing and totally committed performances to have the distance to laugh at, what is, a lot of really funny, almost Coen brothers-esq stuff. Some people think the last half is too wandering, but there are really hilarious things and situations; I think "YOU PIG FUCK!" was the moment the film turned. By then, I had made up my mind of how pathetic and idiotic Master and his flock were, how absolutely broken and doomed Freddie is. In Phoenix, Master blowing up at Laura Dern's character was hilarious. And the look Freddie gave Master when he said "laughter" was golden (followed by beating the hell out of the agent).
Then pretty much everything that Freddie said on the porch of Doris' mother, the totally pathetic and bullshit last discussion in London and him using the "technique" while fucking that girl...for me, I was chuckling for an hour after.

But thats all only set up by how powerfully Phoenix plays the first half of the movie. Between the prison scene and the first "technique" interview, I think he won the Oscar.

Tons to think about, but, really, a lot to laugh about too. Yeah, it's not about Scientology specifically, but come on...pretty great shit.

when you're drifting in the ocean, possibilities and listlessness both exist. as Dodd spells out, we all have a master, and finding such purpose -- within yourself, and the pulls of society -- was my (initial) take away from the film.

Freddie's master is carnality, interposed with violence (he dulls both with alcoholism). Dodd's is adulation, and its empowerment -- his philosophy is nothing more than a vehicle for him to be praised.

together, they inspire one another: Freddie is Dodd's pet, his id come to life, whereas Dodd is a socially accepted version of Freddie, a man who shares his same weaknesses ("I drank the rest of your potion" / Amy Adams' bathroom scene), but masks them with a semblance of control.

while not a total undressing of Scientology, I do believe *all* divine theology is looked down upon here. it seems to be the most unfulfilling master, both as a façade for Dodd, a non-answer for Freddie, a pointlessness for Val (whose master is literally his father), and a betrayal for Laura Dern as the loyal acolyte.

one of PTA's favorite themes, regret, also shows up -- pairing with the repetitive cult exercises, which symbolize a life that hides from the truth. as for PTA's filmmaking ability, that is masterful in and of itself. the mundane becomes arresting, the score is perfect, performances brilliant, and the ocean theme is recurrent in subtle ways, from the blue wardrobes, tinted dusk and painted background walls.

the movie does stall at points, especially in the final 15 minutes (I kept waiting for any of those scenes to be the "ending"). and while I'm sure there is more context than what I could pull, I might judge the pacing differently upon another viewing.

regardless, a captivating film worth dissection.

Yep. Just rambled on the podcast for what seemed like an endless period of time trying to flesh out all the themes, parallel scenes/images/lines, etc. Just so well composed.

I saw this last night and I must admit it left me completely flummoxed. I was completely drawn in by the performances for about 80% of the movie but I was waiting for some sort of resolution, an overall arching message, and was left cold and empty and downright confused.

I was searching around for some explanation last night and found a commenter on A.O. Scott's review who explained the movie as a battle between the id, the ego and the super ego in human form.

I found that pretty interesting and seemingly pretty accurate if you consider:
Freddie = Id
Dodd = Ego
Peggy = Super Ego

That being said, even in that context I'm still not quite sure what those last few minutes were getting at. I really haven't studied psychology at any level, so maybe there's something obvious that I'm missing. Either way I look forward to revisiting this movie after reading up on it a bit.

You're absolutely right about the colors. I also liked that while Freddie is mostly shown in blue, and Dodd mostly in red, occasionally the wardrobe is flipped, which I assume was meant to suggest that each shares some of the other's qualities. (And there's at least one point where Freddie's shirt is checkered red and blue, which I took as a show of his inner conflict).

My favorite visual of the movie (the the boat sailing under the bridge at dusk) advanced the red vs. blue motif - the sunset lit up the bottom of the sky a fiery red color, yet the top of the sky was a deep blue, and the silhouette of the bridge (itself probably symbol) divided the two colors perfectly.

Not only do I want to watch this again to see what else I pick up on, I just want to watch it again for pure entertainment value. Performances are great, score is immense, cinematography is absurdly good, etc. etc.

Also, I saw this projected in 70MM from a perfectly calibrated and properly lit projector, and it was the best picture quality I've ever seen in a movie theater, bar none. Really stunning how great it looked.

I need to revisit to decide how I feel in total.

PT has made one film that I initially was wowed by and soured on very quickly (Magnolia) and another that I initially disliked and grew to admire (Punch-Drunk).

At the very least, I love that he's swinging for the fences, thematically, dramatically, and aesthetically. American film needs more high-level risk taking.

A bit what I found interesting, which is maybe obvious:

Freddie's photography and his "potion" and how he's a perfectionist when it comes to those two jobs but ultimately isn't perfect when it comes to his life. While Lancaster is somewhat perfect in every way in his life, but what he's basically 'selling' to people is a deception, which isn't perfect at all.

In response to Reply # 0

Where JP is cutting the coconut and it's this crazy almost anamorphic lens with lesser quality look. Maybe there is no point to the shot, but it just stuck out a lot for me and I'd assume nothing in PTA's films are there for no reason. Especially since it was the only shot like that in the film.

maybe just to feel something or perhaps get out of the navy, but then opted not to. Didn't really notice the shot, but it may be because I was wincing, waiting for the machete to come down on his hand.

Not just what happens in the scene. It's almost a fish-eye type of shot if I remember it correctly, which obviously distorts the image and makes everything look extremely curved and unnatural. I'm pretty sure it's the only shot in the movie that looked that way.

Perhaps the point was to evoke Freddie's disoriented mental state and warped perception?

If there's another that wide, I don't recall it.

It's an interesting shot. PT operates pretty intuitively so I doubt there was a formal logic behind it.

In addition to being distorting, it also increases the perceived distance between Freddie and his fellow sailors. Notice how we almost always see him as detached from the rest of the men. This shot is part of that pattern.

That could be the case but it just seems really weird even in that explanation. I think of stuff like Magnolia where he used the bible use reference throughout or in Punch Drunk Love where he used certain colour lights/lens flare to explain mood. It could be the case that he used it for that, it just doesn't give me that immediate reaction and really stands out.

Freddie's projection of the female nudity during Dodd's musical number.
I don't think this film speaks fondly of religion any more than "There Will Be Blood".
TWBB was just more overt.
We saw Dodd getting short-tempered and frustrated when the young lady asked him for deeper explanations.
Maybe the film is more about being a drifter & the conviction one has to an ideal, as opposed to the motive for the religion itself.
What needs to happen in order for a person to fully commit to a faith?
In TWBB, the question was: what needs to happen in order for a person to abandon their faith?

The most dissent we saw within that unit came from Dodd's son, who was doubtful of it all. He said "he's making it up as he goes along."
None of that was enough to convince him of faith. Faith was surely needed, since there was no actual proof/ evidence of what Dodd was espousing.
The Cause never came across as a socially-unhealthy community.
And despite the seemingly good-natured, well-intentioned demeanor of Dodd, I was still left with perceiving Dodd to be an arrogant man with a unforgiving didactic stance.
He didn't abuse his power, but yet he didn't allow for much criticism either.
The father-son, mentor-mentee element was obvious.
Its almost as if Dodd was more fixated on attempting to tame and sophisticate Freddie than anything else. Like, the family & friends he knew were too easy.
If only Dodd could tame the wild beast that was Freddie,... then he can say "I am a master".

It's pretty damn Aristotelian.

Act 1:
Freddie comes out of The War damaged, fails to adjust. Loses a job. Poisons a guy. Runs away.

Act 2:
Freddie stows away. The Master has found a muse and Freddie has found somebody who gives a fuck.

Mid point:
The Master's bullshit catches up with him, cops come, Freddie goes nuts.

Act 2 cont.:
The Master commits to fixing Freddie.

End of act 2.:
2nd book sucks. Freddie loses faith. Runs away.

Act 3:
Freddie goes back for Doris. Failing that, goes back to The Master. Master asks Freddie for commitment. Freddie decides to break up.

fin.

It's a love story, niggas.

At risk of seeming like a convoluted art-snob, this film requires (dare I say) an appreciation for understated nuances & a certain resiliency.
I'll definitely watch it again, mainly because Hoffman's performance was such a delight.
Phoenix was intense. Funny at times. And even a bit frustrating.
I was hoping for a hostile power upheaval at the conclusion of this film, but hey.
I can honestly say its one of the few best films from 2012.

I don't think anyone (snob or not) was hoping or thinking they'd get a popcorn flick shitting on scientology from PTA. Especially after the trailers. I went in with an open mind but I left with a sleepy one. The first 1/2 hour or so was interesting but then it kept retracing the same steps over & over & over.

I can absolutely understand why people would deem it a "latte-sipper" film. It kind of is, more than most of PTA's films. More cold in execution than really any of them, more purposely dense than anything this side of Punch Drunk Love.

But the latte-sipper in me loves it. Artful and thought-provoking, whether those thoughts be stimulation or frustration. It's kind of difficult to watch this film and not form an opinion, which I feel with so many movies (even arthouse ones).

because, especially in this forum, that term has a nebulous non specific poorely defined meaning. I do however remember when the first news of this film came out the typical phrase i heard was "PTA doing a scientology film, im in". So it didn't surprise me when it turned out to be a nuanced film, that didnt pick sides. Folks who had already half written reviews praising PTA for exposing this cultmaster in a similar manner to the monstrous daniel plainview were probably massively dissappointed.

Also whilst their are cold moments i think this film is filled with warm moments particularly any time the two male leads are on screen. this film is certainly orders of magnitude warmer than there will be blood.

I'd compare it tonally to the prestige. In fact i found it more favourable interms of warmth/tone to that film.

I dunno,...... i enjoyed it, certainly wasnt bored and for arguments sake i hate all forms of coffee.

The critic reviews were mostly positive. It may have been a handful that bucked, but it got the critic push. Problem is it came out in a year with very hyped movies (Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty). It's a decent film that relies on your reaction to Phoenix.

... I use it as a term that means the layman isn't going to enjoy it. If I wouldn't recommend my mom to see it, then it's a latte-sipper flick. My mom would not like The Master. Too weird, too dense.

Now, I have latte-sipper sensibilities. I really loved The Master. Don't get me wrong. It's just not a flick for everyone, by any means. Plenty of PTA fans in here were left cold, and PTA's made films that would be considered "latte-sippers" in the past.

Also, I don't mean cold as if its characters lack feeling entirely. Its feeling is just far less accessible than, say, There Will Be Blood or Magnolia. The relationship between Freddie and Lance is strange, some might say off-putting. I was moved by it, but again, I can't fault those who aren't.

I agree it's not a Scientology flick-- my whole review was about how it's really just a simple love story framed in a non-simple fashion. Anyone looking for Scientology secrets will be disappointed (and if Scientology is like that, then Scientology apparently employs a shitload of exercises directors have actors do... since I've done nearly all of those exercises with my acting students in the past, lol).

lol
He was making it all up as he goes along.
The alien stories of origin came later.
At the very least, I'd say that he stole some ideas from Zecharia Sitchin, but added his own spin.

It's definitely an artsy flick, cramming every frame with imagery that only really starts to click when you look at it from a symbolic perspective. Certainly the director isn't interested in realism. It's surreal at times and theatrical nearly the entire time.

I read a lot of reviews that discussed how complex and dense it was. I didn't really find it to be that at all. It's pretty basic, really. Two men who admire one another, all doused with Paul Thomas Anderson's usual "men struggling with sexual inadequacy" stuff and the religious stuff that he's been interested in since his last film.

That having been said, the critical analysis grad school nerd in me appreciates that here is a director who chooses his imagery carefully. While he cares about dialogue, he cares so much more about what we see. Which not too many directors do nowadays, weirdly.

But I also understand if people don't like it. The approach is off the beaten path of traditional Hollywood fare and certainly can be off-putting to those preferring a plot-driven tale. My girl described The Master as "odd," and said she could appreciate the acting, but not necessarily the film as a whole. Which I get, even if I personally loved it. And there are certainly smart critics who I love who weren't feeling it... so if you read my piece but still find the flick to be dogshit, I don't think you're alone by a longshot.

Luckily a movie like that with every frame packed with meaning makes my job of writing about it insanely easy.

it was good. looked fantastic. that opening 10-15min sequence that shows Freddy's aloofness/strangeness and sexual disposition was fantastic.

Joaquin and PSH held shit the fuck down. that side by side jail cell scene was gold, as was the bathroom rub down scene.

some of the criticisms people have spoke of in here are valid though. it is a bit disjointed thematically and emotionally, and the pacing seemed off

overall B-

I looked at the movie as a whole, but that specifically was a great scene.

The acting in this is more impressive than the acting in Lincoln.

True, it doesn't connect emotionally, but neither did There Will Be Blood. Clearly, PTA aint about that.

Some good dark humor too. A- for me on first viewing.

to the depiction of Daniel's desire towards Manifest Destiny through gold, than oil

also the primate in me feels some thing serious for the way he man handles Eli's Biblical pimping bullshit.

than you know, there is the boy

emotional archs aren't only tied to love/falling out of love narratives, or dealings of tragedy and death
