to not keep any but a few of the supporting actors consistent. I think he has two different people playing his sister, different people playing his brother.

He tries to give artistic explanations about wanting to change people's expectation of a sitcom but I think its just to avoid actor gild rules about recurring characters.

But I do like the fact that they don't keep character continuity because it fits a show that doesn't really keep thematic continuity either.

You can have evil gay moms in one Episode, and in an other episode totally indifferent cold mother.

and then they just didn't appear again. and only one brother and then he didn't appear in the 2nd season. he did acknowledge that the mother's characterization was inconsistent from the flashback episode to the current day episode, but that would've been different actresses anyways. he just doesn't care about continuity. His ex-wife in the show is Black, afterall.

Because I don't happen to think that's the case

And besides, he and FX still have to pay himself or his writers through the Writer's Guild for writing said recurring characters (though they have some strange rules for paying for recurring characters, as I personally found out)

The amount may not be as much through SAG, but I dunno, I don't see him making creative decisions just to save money and skirt the rules. This is the same guy who (reportedly) paid bonuses to everyone who helped him on his online concert experiment...

The guild rules that I am referring to is that if an actor appears in a series for a certain amount of episodes then he or she is no longer a guest but is a recurring character and is entitled to a certain minimum pay and certain on screen credit.

Louie has been very honest about how tight a budget that the show has been produced on and the drastic steps he has taken to avoid certain costs (e.g., he is the shows editor). It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't have recurring characters to keep the budget at a certain level.

the network offered to up the budget of the show by 100K if Louis would take notes from them on development. He declined and kept his per show @ 200K and totally independent from suits.

it's not to screw actor's over it is just to keep the show going the way he wants it to...and in the meantime he can give a few different actors some shine.

In response to Reply # 0

(Greenwald is fast becoming one of my favorite TV reviewers)

The Return of Louie and Why TV's Best Comedy Isn't Really a Comedy
By Andy Greenwald

It was renowned (and recently deceased) film critic Andrew Sarris who popularized the “auteur theory” in American cinema. In extreme shorthand, it’s the belief that films are best viewed as the aesthetic extension of one human — the director — whose top-down decisions affect every aspect of what we see onscreen. In recent years, those of us who cover television for a living have come to apply the auteur theory to the idiot box as well, considering the best shows as ongoing art projects propagated by a single visionary showrunner: Vince Gilligan on Breaking Bad, Kurt Sutter on Sons of Anarchy, Whitney Cummings on Whitney.

This sort of thinking is helpful for scribblers on quick deadlines, but it’s inaccurate. Despite what Matt Weiner would have us believe, television is an inherently collaborative medium. Nearly everything that makes it to air is the result of dozens of tiny decisions, second guesses, and happy accidents. Budgets must be juggled, scripts rewritten and network agita assuaged. No matter how calm and reflective they seem in roundtable interviews after the fact, the reality is that most showrunners consider every season, successful or not, to be a grueling marathon through a minefield; the only way they make it across the finish line is if they’re carried on the backs of others.

And then there’s Louie. Dismissive of rules, independent of groupthink and proudly, occasionally frustratingly devoted to a singular vision, the half hour — which returns to FX tonight at 10:30 — has established itself as TV’s lone auteurist show. Every aspect of this unclassifiable series — Is it a Dramedy? A Sit-Dram? A Cry For Help? — is the product of the rumpled, sweatshirted mind of Louis C.K. He writes, directs, stars — even edits (well, until he fired himself this year, at least) each episode at home on his laptop. The deal C.K. made with the network before the first season is famously unique and deeply punk rock: They give him a relatively small sum of money, he goes away and makes television for them to air. Presto: DIY LOLs.

Except here’s the funny thing: Despite being widely considered the best comedian alive, the show C.K. delivered to FX is miles away from comedy. Yes, there are Seinfeld-ian interstitals of his stand-up routine, but the bulk of the show is devoted to absurdist, often heartbreaking whimsy. Other than Louie himself and his incredibly cute, tow-headed daughters, there is no continuity to speak of. Actors, family members, status quos come and go, washed away in the bracing tide of dick jokes and despair. Interesting threads, like Louie’s troubled teenage niece, are picked up, examined, and dropped as if by a forgetful seamstress. A blind date exits, stage-helicopter. A dog dies 30 seconds after being adopted. Mistakes are made, yet lessons are rarely learned. It’s always a delicate dance to determine how much of all this is autobiographical — the real C.K. is a divorced father of two girls, but his ex-wife definitely doesn’t look like this — but one Season 2 plot was recognizably true: Louie’s miserable experience filming a traditional sitcom. “We can’t have a show where everybody just says whatever because it’s cute,” he declared, before walking off the set. By refusing to do things the way they’ve always been done, Louie offers something even the most lauded dramas rarely do: surprise.

Which is possibly why it took me so long to warm to it. I have a feeling even its creator would admit that Louie’s idiosyncrasies can be alienating and many of its flights of fantasy don’t quite manage to stick the landing. (Last season’s lauded “Duckling” episode — in which Louie travels to Afghanistan and discovers laughter is the universal language — left me cold.) Anyone expecting convention will be sorely disappointed. But Louie is the rare kind of show that eventually teaches you how to watch it. For me, it took a recent Netflix binge to finally figure it out: Louie is best considered as a deeply personal, often deeply sad collection of vignettes. Woody Allen is the key influence here, another ginger joker who found himself suddenly more interested in the moments before the punchline, the deafening silence after the laughter stops. Yes, I cackled at the sight of Louie belting out The Who in front of his mortified kids, but it was the oddly lyrical subway scene that stayed with me, a Manhattan-influenced montage of a busking violinist, an obese homeless guy pouring water over his jiggly, sweaty belly, and Louie himself earning the respect (and fellatio) of his fellow passengers by mopping up a mystery puddle on the F train. (He may loathe himself, but God does Louis C.K. adore New York City — somehow his digital cameras make even the seediest streets hum and glow like a Gershwin tune.) And Louie’s unapologetically impossible love for guest star (and frequent writing partner and producer) Pamela Adlon has slowly slumped its way into becoming the most affecting romance on television. At the end of last season, after her millionth smiling rejection of Louie’s puppy-dog peepers, she headed off to a new life in Paris. She wanted him to wave to her, and he thought she said “wait for me.” Giving us — and Louie — the resolution we want is something that only happens on TV. Failure here isn’t a bug, it’s a feature.

The emotional wallop of that finale continues unabated in the first five episodes of Season 3. Onscreen, Louie may be an ice-cream-shoveling shame-spiral, but the auteur behind the camera never lacked confidence in his creations. Now, the more courageous he gets, the wider he stretches the canvas. In the premiere, his indecisiveness goes supernova, forcing a new girlfriend (the very good Gaby Hoffmann) to do his dirty work for him. The third episode of the season takes us to Miami, and it’s half beautiful, half unbearable. (I actually had to take a cringe break midway through that was longer than the episode itself.) For a long time I struggled with Louie’s inherent schizophrenia because it seemed so antithetical to its star’s relentlessly focused stand-up. But at some point between Melissa Leo’s warm and bawdy performance in the second episode and a rarely better Parker Posey’s dazzling, two-episode turn as a dream date, I realized that for Louis C.K. comedy and life are two entirely separate things. Louie, at its best and worst, captures the raw absurdity of reality before it’s carefully whittled into digestible, jokey bits. Onstage, Louis C.K. uses laughter as a defense against the world. The beauty and bravery of Louie is that he allows us to see him without that armor, as messy and needy as anybody else.

And I know that this show does humor in a variety of ways, but this time around even the subtle dark comedy did't have a lot of punch.

His ex-wife being black was funny in its own right...especially when you consider that Season 1 episode where he follows that black girl home.

That was the entire scene and what made it funny

Awkward ass Louie with no idea how to dump this girl to the point that she did it for him while he kept denying it but did nothing to stop it. Then a giant sigh of relief at the end like "cool I did it".

not right then, anyway. but he clearly couldn't stand her (easy to see why) so when she brought up break up you could see his uncomfortable relief. his whole range of uncertainty was great

mix that with worrying about his car, and wanting to dig in to his ice cream, that whole scene was gold

First Ep left me underwhelmed. Dude seems to be getting his independent film on more than telling jokes. Also I've heard Louie talk about masturbation more times than I care for.

But the stuff with the kids, a blind date that I never guessed would have ended the way it did. That was what I was waiting for.

I read in an interview somewhere that this season gets progressively better with Episode 5 being off the hook. Look forward to it.

and it's not like they couldn't be adopted, or - given the complection of the actress, biological.

But it does make you think, and then second guess yourself, and then examine your viewpoint and then think again.

Which is funny in a meta kinda way. Which is probally the point.

52. "No one is talking about the "Gay Louie" episode?"
In response to Reply # 0

Louie's show is at its finest when it sets us up to expect one joke and it delivers another completely unexpected joke. I think it was very telling when Louie said last week that he has been doing stand-up for 20 years, has heard every joke and can see them coming a mile away. Louie treats his audience with the same level of sophistication and plays on that expectation.

This weeks episode of Louie telegraphed like it would be about the awkward situation of a guy trying to make a new guy friend, and that awkward moment in which you have to make clear that you aren't gay, you just enjoy the other guys company (We have seen it on King of Queens, Everyone Loves Raymond, and other solid standard sitcoms). The truth is, I thought that is what this episode was about all the way up to the end of the final scene when it occurred to me that for some reason Louie couldn't just come out and say "Dude I am not gay, I just like hanging out with you!".

It also made me think about the scene with his wife where he was unable to tell her that she had the wrong idea. Instead, Louie was totally unable to express how he felt about his new friend because he wasn't exactly sure he felt about the guy and he hadn't ruled out completely that his attraction to him was sexual in nature.

I am a heterosexual male but even I could recognize that there was something more going on for Louie than just a couple of new friends having a good time.

If you still aren't sold on my interpretation of the episode, consider what we know about every episode of Louie we have seen to date. Do you think that Louie wrote an episode involving the fairly routine joke that you have seen many times before about the awkwardness of guys making new friends or do you think he was going with the more left field or unexpected twist of Louie experiencing a crush on his new friend?

The dude was 'hot'; muscular, good looking and young...if he was just dash less ethnic looking minus the tats he fit right into the Twilight universe. When they do studies about the perks attractive people get remember that their stock goes up with heterosexual people also...we like attractive people no matter what the gender.

Louie's ego wasn't at it's highest point also. The show made Louie cognizant of just how not 'hot' he is with the first half the episode where he just ogled at hot girls and was feeling body conscious(enough where he fled back to the hotel room).

Particularly the interaction with the women in the episodes were telling...him snapping at the girl for just taking a strawberry and Louie not hitting on any of them*. After all that its not surprising he WAS attracted to the guy's looks & youth(and eventually family & lifestyle), he just didn't want to fuck him.

*Louie hits on a girl pretty much every other episode if you notice...he just fumbles the fuck out of it

..Louie's confidence was rockbottom from the moment he left the beach and went back to the hotel ..it was funny seeing all the old fat guys hit the beach in the late afternoon

....i think he was just having fun chilling with that dude, i mean, his friends back home don't seem to do shit, it doesn't seem like Louie has much of a social life in NYC, so the whole "adventure" this dude took him on with the parties and everything was something that he didn't want to end ..he played on the audiences anticipation of a "I'm not a gay dude" moment though

i wouldn't go as far as to say it was sexual, but it was an attraction on some level

he wanted to be honest with dude when he was explaining it, but in his sincerity, he kept find himself starting to say things like "i just really love spending time with you" "I feel better when im with you" "I've never felt this way before"

so stopping himself was half knowing how gay all that sounded (like he broke down in the stand-up part) and part actually questioning himself, like, shit, maybe i am kinda gay for this kid

so good tho

The 'not saying' went a bit too long for me.

I bet he would have been able to find a way to be awkward even after saying "I'm not gay", early in the conversation.

i just tripped off the little subtleness of some of the stuff she says to louie
like the restaurant scene were she giggles and says that her mom's boyfriend is 'pretty funny'
louie double takes and look at her with an annoyed look
she has to know that her dad is a comedian and for her to say that the boyfriend is 'funny' kinda implying that he's funnier than louie which is pretty rude for her, but she does it and a fake innocent way...hahahahaha
that shit was comedic gold on 2nd rewatch

This season has been underwhelming so far.

The Miami episode has probably been my favorite and that doesn't really stand up to anything from Season 2. Louis asking Posey on a date last week was good, but really just a lesser rehash of the Pamela scene from last year.

I partially blame myself for the let down, critics were saying Louis changed his game so I was expecting something great. But there's something missing and I fear Louis might be a little too wrapped up in his own genius. That pan-up to the skyline with the "created by Louis ck" credit was a bit cringe worthy.

Story wise I just hated that type of chick. Dating a manic chick would be cool like for 5 minutes when you are 21 but at 40 with kids I don't see how Louie could enjoy any of that.

From a filmmakers prospective I feel like Louie was trying to get his independent filmmaker cred. If that's what you want to do, Louie you should make your 2 hour feature and go all in on your poor mans woody Allen. But to cram that it an episode of your tv show is just trying to hard and comes off as phony to me. Less attempts at artistry and more jokes please.

I really, really need to get caught up.

hollywoodreporter.com:

>TCA 2012: FX Renews 'Louie,' 'Brand X with Russell Brand,' Adds Martin Sheen to 'Anger Management'

11:49 AM EDT 7/28/2012 by Lacey Rose

The cable net arrived at Saturday's Television Critics Association Press Tour Saturday with a slew of announcements, including the likelihood that "Wilfred" will return.

FX is staying in business with Louie and Russell Brand.

The cable network’s President John Landgraf made a series of announcements Saturday morning during his turn at the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour, including the likelihood that both Wilfred and Anger Management will live on.
The Louie renewal comes just days after the Louis CK comedy nabbed another three Emmy nominations for the News Corp-owned cable network.

The series has a particularly large–and vocal—fan-base among critics, who often praise its tone, style and originality. What is often bewildering to those seeing the series for their first time is that CK writes, produces, directs and stars in the half-hour series, which returned for its third season in late June. To date, Louie is averaging a 1.2 rating in the all-important 18 to 49 demo and lures 1.9 million total weekly viewers, according to Nielsen.

FX will also move forward with seven more episodes of Brand X with Russell Brand, the net’s late night foray for which its execs remain excited. Helped by a strong lead-in block and guests including Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, the effort premiered to 1.1 million viewers, with 687,000 among them adults in 18-49 bracket.

Even better: The Hollywood Reporter’s chief TV critic Tim Goodman provided it a glowing review: “FX's foray into late night is a great idea, and Brand's lightning-quick take on issues of the day is both funny and, yes, insightful,” he wrote at the time, adding: "If only the show were an hour." The additional episodes will air in the fall with FX's Sons of Anarchy and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

A third season renewal for Wilfred is likely to come shortly, says Landgraf, once "deal issues" are sorted out. Thus far this season, the pot-smoking-dog comedy has garnered a 1.6 rating in the 18 to 49 demo, and just 2.7 million total weekly viewers. Particularly appealing: the half-hour series’ median viewer hovers around 36.

Also promising for a back-90 order is Charlie Sheen's Anger Management. The performance of cable's top-rated scripted comedy thus far -- a 3.1 demo rating-- has given Landgraf "every indication" that additional episodes will be ordered, with Martin Sheen joining the cast as a regular if that is the case.

Definitely a “style over substance” episode this week as the neither premise delivered all that much. There was no knockout comedy punch. There was no brooding, “so painfully real it’s funny” larger thematic element either. Neither of those comments are a complaint by the way. I have zero complaints about this series and even zero-er expectations of what it SHOULD be. I’m happy, if not always left satiated, by what Louis CK brings to me each week. That being said I saw a few spots where a joke seemed to be getting set up but none was delivered. For example, a laugh seemed to be coming from the long series of cuts around the strip club. I kept waiting for the camera to pan down from distraught crying stripper faces to distraught crying stripper tits & ass. I missed the stand-up interstitial and, oddly, the usual opening credit sequence.

Seriously. I don't get it.

The joke that we did get is far funnier, and the entire Robin Williams part of the episode sets it up. I fell out laughing right before Rob and Louie had to leave to do the same.

I honestly can't explain why this is funny. But it does touch on that profane/profound line that Louis mines so well. The whole thing revolves around the fear of being alone/lonely and dying that way, being remembered that way ... and that being juxtaposed with a strip club full of crying and grieving strippers. The dude wasn't lonely, he just found his in such an unconventional fashion. I imagine it's the kind of thing a comedian finds funny. I dunno. I dug it.

Never was just a little shit. A literal counterpoint to the other plot line: Never's story seemed like it was Louis' take on poop and pee jokes. Even that was tempered with the hint of humanity at the end.

. . .
psn: sirius_fruits

but that shit's stupid though.

I really thought there would be a shot that lingered on the crying strippers, which went on for several beats, and then cut back to Louis & we see that in the middle of all that he's still just checking out the goods. Like I couldn’t imagine why we stayed on the distraught strippers and dee-jay for so long unless it was going to have a joke to it. I think a cut back to Louis’ eye’s lowering and then a cut back to crying strippers which pans down to their asses would be hilarious. Pan back up and one of them has caught him and is just glowering at him. At that moment, in the strip club’s reality, Louis is the unlikeable piece of shit loser and Barney’s the one truly mourned and remembered. Again this isn’t a complaint, and like I said I don’t expect ANYTHING from this show because it exists as its own little beautiful no boundaries thing which I think is really quite revolutionary on tv, but I thought that was a better joke than just having them leave, beat, look at each other and burst out laughing.

The thing with Never just felt pretty empty. Even the phone call with the wacky zoo guys had no follow through on the set up.

I think this episode was quirky more than quality.

i hate characters written like Never. just over the top weird/strange for the sake of shaking things up. any grown up, no matter what arch or personality Louis has created for his self on the show, would reply that tepidly to such actions by a child.

the shit was Robin Williams just seemed so pointless, meandering and monotonous as well.

Try spending some time in education. Kids like that EXIST, like for real. You'd be shocked how many parents either don't believe in discipline or are too pussy/tired to discipline their kids.

I think people are either big fans of the parker posey episodes and wouldn't dig this episode or love this Episode and hate the parker posey stuff. Consider me down with the Latter. Show can go in either direction going forward. I would hate to see the show start to take itself to serious and not have fun like this episode.

I think I say this to my wife every week "this is not a comedy, in a regular sense, but its incredibly funny"

Of course Never was an over the top character, but man that was hilarious.

I also love how Louie finds these little moments between comics and turns them into gems. It's like he's giving us small views into what its really like to be a comic. The thing with Robin Williams was cool. obviously there are a ton of comic promotors just like the dude that died, and to have Robin Williams be the other guy to show up is just great. Their quick relationship/friendship that ends in a promise to be there when the other one dies is heartwarming and at the sametime really sad and insecure. These comics who are enjoyed by people the world over, are worried that No one will come to their funeral. So crazy, but so funny.

I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I mean in any other context that was a solid ep. I like how they have achieved the ability to show marriage misery with that one chick eventhough Louie is single.

The Maron stuff was funny because I heard the podcast where they discussed their beef. Might been a little too insidery though.

Maria Bamford on tv is always a good thing. I was incredibly pleased when she showed up last week, and she of course was great in her brief screentime.

As best he can to get out of these situations that he constantly finds himself in.

I do love it though, I feel like Louie's done so much with very little. I absolutely love his interactions with other comics. Its like this really little world that we just aren't privy to and he's giving us little peaks in.

Oh and Maria Bamford everytime on screen is GOLD. I absolutely love her from her standup but between this and those damn target commercials dude I don't even know.

This is just quality television week after week.

we 'regress' in some areas and 'grow' in others. It's really just about balancing our expectations and reactions to our current situation in life. The quicker/smoother we're able to do that in life the move 'evolved' we are.

At least IMO

F. Murray Abraham was great.

The vomiting, the rental car place, the Masshole, the car window breaking...

I got a little weary of the 'escape' but thought the ending made it all work beautifully.

Louie's agent looks like a fresh-out-of-high-school Thom Yorke in that shot during the credits.

And Letterman needs to hang it up. He sounds like a bitter old man anytime I watch these days. I grew up watching dood, and I don't remember him being so obsessively political. That's all he seems to talk about whenever I tune in. It's disgusting.

Dude's holding his phone talking about "Don't trust anybody". He looked like he was ready to make the call to his agent before Louie even left the table

Louis has taken this so much further than I could have ever imagined watching those first couple of episodes in season one. This is becoming one of my all-time favorite television shows. Brings me back to when I'd run to the screen for Arrested Development and kind of sit in awe of how much I was enjoying every second.

Missed opportunity for his famous line after Louie got whooped though (although dude's laugh was pretty great)

this reviewer points it out:
http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/review-louie-late-show-part-3-yo-letterman-i-did-it

I am, frankly, disappointed in myself for not recognizing sooner that "Louie" had modeled this whole story on the first "Rocky" movie. You've got your aging, coulda-shoulda-woulda contender who never quite maximized his abilities, a fluky opportunity to turn around that wasted potential and take a shot at the championship, a crotchety old-time trainer with inscrutable methods, our hero struggling to decide whether he wants the title, etc.

"Late Show (Part 3)" added in our hero running through the streets(*), putting on a surprisingly good fight, and celebrating his moral victory in the end by crying, "I did it!" ("Yo, Adrian!" is replaced by "Yo, Letterman!")

(*) In a "Rocky II" touch, he's followed by a group of kids. I wonder if that was planned, or if the kids saw a camera crew, joined in, and C.K. realized the parallel was too good to chase them away.

Although, the running and the boxing moments SHOULD have given it away. I trust him too much. W/most shows/movies I'm CONSTANTLY looking for parralell or allusions to other stories/myths/legends etc.

W/Louie - I sit back and just enjoy that shit, like a glass of brandy. It's too good to ruin w/analysis. It better, simply enjoyed.

damn near hated it. the overly morose-stressed out tone of the episodes, few funny moments, the Lynchian loom of scenes, the depressing music/soundtrack... i was like why?

but than those last 5-10minutes happened in part 3 and holy shit did it all make sense. from the Rocky themes, to the idea of an older man trying to better himself for his family and personal spirit, the exploration of the stress that comes with trying to live out a dream professionally while finally getting an opportunity to do it AND having to do the work. it was real shit. like this show has always been: a semi-chaotic personalized narrative of left of center comedy with heart and style.

this show is just great

He is always just reacting to the people around him and barely talks in sentences. He spends a lot of time fumbling for words like a grown ass Kevin Arnold.

This Arc at times was little sappy but thinking about it in terms of Rocky makes it all work better for me.

The scene is just about the ridiculous processes we go through to fix shit sometimes, combined with the dad's desire to give a great gift.

The main gag to me though was just the cray shit he was doing, drilling into the head, melting down crayons and shit. made me think of situations lik when I can't find a screwdriver and I'm sticking anything skinny in to try to get it loose.

He tried a lot of things, a lot of novel ideas were present, but his success rate was relatively low. I'll rewatch the season when it returns to Instant at some time, but I'm left feeling his ambition was stronger than his execution this season.

it was a little something different, but I can't say better or worse than previously.

It had the same heart I'm used to from Louie and I laughed just as hard, if maybe not as often.

But, end of the episode every time, I was quite all right with that.

I feel like this show reflects real life so well ... and real life is all of this at once, it's rarely the best times that come in spades.

Plus ... this season had the violent dater ... which might be my favorite ep. yet..

In response to Reply # 203

Best Segment from this season was the blind date. It felt like S2 and took a fairly convention sitcom plot and turned it on its head.

I prefer that waaaay more than the segments where it felt like he was trying to turn a sitcom into an Indy Movie.

216. "Louie not back until Spring 2014"
In response to Reply # 0

http://weblogs.variety.com/thevote/2012/10/louie.html

"Louie" will take an extended hiatus — the fourth season of "Louie" will air in the spring of 2014.

The decision comes per request from series mastermind Louis C.K., who wants more breathing room in creating the next season.

He anticipates the show will begin shooting in September for a May 2014 launch, which will allow him to space out the shooting and editing schedules.

"The last three seasons have been this surge of fun and work and stories and it's been great, but I want the show to keep getting better," C.K. said in a conference call with reporters today. "That's my goal, and I don't want it to be making the donuts, I want it to be something that comes from somewhere important and stays funny. It's a luxury I asked for ... season four is my job right now, but I'm going to take a whole lot of time to turn it in.

"I want season four to go somewhere new, even if it's only a slight shift."

He also said that he thinks in trilogies and that the first three seasons completed one such trilogy, and so he wanted to take some time to set up the next trilogy. He speculated that, "pie in the sky," the show might go nine seasons — i.e., three trilogies.
"This is certainly one of the finest television series I've ever had the opportunity to work on," FX prexy John Landgraf said."It's been unbelievable to see what Louis' been able to do when left to his own devices."

Landgraf said he and C.K. talked about deconstructing the sitcom form from the very beginning and not being wedded to traditional structure.

"My goal from the very beginning is not to force Louis to adapt his skills to a specific structure of story," Landgraf said. "Why does it have to be one thing? Why can't it be anything Louis wants it to be? Louis will do whatever he wants to do, and we'll try to figure out from a channel standpoint how to support that.

"You have to live as an artist in order to grow and recharge your batteries, and sometimes there's not enough time to live when you have a really successful show."

C.K. said that he's "eager" to get back on the air but that the desire to make the show better superceded that, though he realized he was putting more pressure on himself to deliver.

In response to Reply # 216

1. It is pretty amazing that Landgraf is allowing this. FX continues to impress.

2. I'm glad this is for creative reasons. I think the show had hit a bit of a wall and was very close to 'making donuts' as Louis put it.

3. The 'thinking in trilogies' thing sounds kind of pretentious and stupid.

4. ...that being said. Potentially 9 Seasons?!?!? Fuck Yes!!!

5. Can't wait to see what he comes up with. I would imagine this could only add to the pressure.
