The harrowing feeling of loss and the soul searching that you get when someone sinks your battleship is certainly not in the trailer.

It only has one week to make its money since MIB3 and then Snow White and the Huntsman follow and I don't see it being a HUGE opener. I could see an underperforming opening weekend and then a big dropoff.

So it won't be Kitch's second bomb of the year but I could see it leveling off at around 115 million or something. It could have made some more in a different weekend but with Avengers before it and quality films after it, it's opening weekend or bust. And I'm not seeing this being a HUGE opening weekend.

Dark Shadows, which has very positive buzz after a few press screenings, and The Dictator will be playing. Those will be the films people see if The Avengers is sold out in it's 2nd and 3rd week retrospectively. The only people I've talked to who actually do wanna see Battleship is very young teenage boys, who said that their interest lies more so in The Avengers and The Dictator.

It's like Peter Berg read that fake script for Michael Bay's The Dark Knight and made it into a movie. And please don't put Rihanna into anymore movies. Mindless action with very bad CGI and endless AC/DC songs all over the soundtrack. Ugh. And it's 2 hours and 11 minutes. Mad long for no reason. And the scene after the end credits was fucking awful. I want my $13 bucks back and I saw this shit for free. Knock off Michael Bay shit...

The reviews I've seen have said that the CGI is good and the film's saving grace.

Not that it matters. I wasn't seeing it anyway, I'm just wondering if it'll beat Avengers this week.

I have a high tolerance for commercialization, because Hollywood exists to make money (not art) -- the almighty dollar is behind all our favorite films. but Battleship has gone too far:

- trying to monetize the reverence for American armed forces
- that this entire movie exists solely for toy merchandising
- more undertones of xenophobia
- casting non-actresses Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker in an appeal to TMZ sensibilities
- not having enough pride to suck on its own, it has to blatantly rip off another shitty franchise (Transformers) in the hope viewers flock to its homogeneity

please fail. or at least not spawn a sequel.

especially in favor of Rihanna to play sassy Barbados chic

Truth be told she really wasn't THAT bad. Brooklyn might've been worse in that scene she's supposed to look worried but comes off looking constipated instead.

Didn't really make a lick of sense for a majority of the 2 hours & the way they literally moved the board game to the big screen was cute but corny. It's gotta a good sense of humor (not always intentional with the "cyborg" character). Blew stuff up real good but should've left the aliens to Prometheus. Better than Transformers but overall still sunk my childhood.

A big robot is stalking Taylor Kisch on the deck.. but some reason stalking very very slowly - they Rhianna very very slowly moves a cannon toward the robot - who doesn't notice - and then very slowly says some Caribbean and curse-word line and then very slowly fires the weapon just as the robot very slowly notices the turret pointed at his head.

The pacing seemed way,way off.

I told my buddy this movie has 7 days to make all the money it can. Between MIB3 and The Avengers eating their lunch, they would be glad to make #3 box over the memorial day weekend, which is sad. BUt it released earlier overseas so it at least made it's budget back there. But the release timing of this movie does make me scratch my head. Why not release it before, say The Hunger Games? It would have stood more of a chance

Avengers looking like 53 million and Battleship is limping into second with 30 million.

Even worse (but not as expensive a flop) The Dictator will probably get just 12 million and finish behind What to Expect When You're Expecting.

9 million dollar gross with 450k coming from midnight shows...that's worse than John Carter. Their both doing the same as JC also grossed $200 million overseas.

bigger names would have helped a little, but nowhere near enough to prevent these two from being massive financial flops. Actually, the price for a bigger name would probably have evened out.

The material was the poison for these two, not TK. The marketing helped sink JC from jump. Let's not sit here and call Taylor Kitsch poison just yet, because if we're being fair, these two movies are shit for a plenty of reasons before you even get to him on that list.

I will say I'm not even a remote fan of the guy, but it's simply unfair to call him poison based on two movies that were awful based on the material/marketing/etc to begin with.

dude just can't act....

Friday Night Lights was that shit, but he was one member of a *HUGE* ensemble and was only prominent when his character had storylines...

I'm sorry, but if a studio casts you as a lead, they *expect* you to deliver BASED on whatever talent and presence you have.

I'll give Kitsch a pass on John Carter. I just felt like JC didn't really click at all given the source material *and* the fact that it was very archaic even for this day and age.

But, Hollywood has been trying to push him as the next big thing...he's NOT.

I don't care if Savages makes a grip of money...he just doesn't have the presence to carry a big budget movie on his shoulders.

maybe like 3-5 years down the road, if he did a mix of supporting and some smaller characters roles in indies and studio fare and he showed he can act...like legitimately act.

as the lead, he was beyond bland and horrible.

Someone at Hasbro and Universal should have realized that the "Battleship" brand name does not have the same juice as a "Transformers" or "G.I. Joe"

If I recall correctly there was quite a bit of moaning and groaning and lame board game-related jokes from the public when this title was announced

Which means if you're Universal and Hasbro, that you've got to come up with a killer concept that would overcome the negative fallout

So you come up with an alien invasion on the sea concept

Which, okay, fine, it's kinda been done before, but you've gotta really have this shit sizzle, it's gotta be hot to def if anyone's gonna buy tickets to it

Then the trailers hit. We see who's in it. Liam? Okay. Rihanna? Er. Taylor? Who?

But I suppose that's neither here nor there.

The point is, fair or not, the brand name had a certain connotation attached to it, and the people in charge didn't do a good enough job of convincing people that this idea wasn't a joke, that there was going to be something awesome and fun about bringing this thing to life...

And rather than rooting for actors to lose jobs after the people in charge pushed them in front of the people, why don't we ever go in on the people in charge for making these decisions (and still keeping their jobs after shit flops) in the first place?

hired a big-name actor, one that probably wouldn't have been able to do it unless they got a salary deferment and profits on the back end

I mean, maybe he thought John Carter would work so he could have afforded a step back with Battleship but he had to know that those movies with those budgets were going to make or break his film career. (Unless Savages somehow beasts out but I doubt it.)

It's tough to turn down those big roles but slow and steady wins the race in Hollywood.

Just awful from start to finish. Berg has made some movies I've quite liked but he totally drops the ball here. Neeson looks confused and Kitsch has managed to regress as an actor. Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna's performances aren't even the worst thing about this...which is saying something.

47. "The problem is... boat movies are SLOW AS SHIT."
In response to Reply # 0

In a movie like U-571 (grossly underrated), the pace works for them, because it's all about the waiting, the psychological warfare, will-I-die-in-ten-seconds-or-not? They fire a missile, they wait to see if it hits. They hear a missile fired at them, they wait to see if it hits. They turn their boat/sub/whatever very very slowly. They move out of range of missiles very very slowly. IT'S ALL SLOW.

To make it not slow, it needs to be a pirate movie at worst-- toss in loads of swashbuckling and hand-to-hand combat. Something to speed up the proceedings.

You'd think they would have learned from the disappointing box office of Master And Commander that slow boat movies, no matter who's in it or how good the effects are or what the script is like, won't make big bucks. I guess they thought an alien adversary would improve interest. The problem is... the aliens are ALSO SLOW AS SHIT.

For some reason, the trailer made me think with the destruction of the city and the explosions inside the boat and the shots of aliens boarding the ship that there'd be faaaaar more action than there was.

Sadly, not even close to the case. The film is so slow. We wait for missiles. We wait for boats to turn. We wait for satellites to rotate around the earth. In the most hilarious scene in the film, several men very slowly move a thousand-pound shell as fast-paced dramatic music races along.

We also wait for the film to establish again that Kitsch is a screw up, since they dedicate the first forty minutes to establishing four different scenes complete with speeches explaining how big a screw up Kitsch is. Christ, this movie was repetitive.

There were a couple of awesomely bad things that I loved, such as most of the stuff with the legless vet, ESPECIALLY the INCREDIBLY AWESOME fight scene with the alien. The super terrible CGI of the maskless aliens was also awesome. The tooth getting knocked out? You KNOW Berg was sitting in the editing bay cysed, knowing the crowds would cheer when it happened. I came close to cheering, mostly because something happened, which for the most part never occurs during the film.

It was mostly boring... but the exploitation of vets made me legitimately angry. It wasn't as lengthy or horrific as Battle: LA... but real heroes appearing like munchkins in Oz magically on that sub and then dropping one-liners made me pretty upset.

Overall, it's just forgettable, with splashes of silliness and anger-inducing garbage in equal amounts. And it's slow.

Slow & steady wins the race there because they utilized their actors better too. I didn't think this was too slow. It was too dumb.

Those Crank movies are dumb as SHIT, but they're awesome, cuz things happen at a rapid pace. Here, we spent 30 seconds at a time waiting to hear when the missile would inevitably miss our hero.

and like Malin Ackerman, folk will find out quickly she's nothing more than a bland ass blonde actress with a limited skill set.

I mean, really, she wasn't contributing anything to an already thankless role...

at least with Rihanna, she tried and was surprisingly serviceable. And, yea, a woman basically running shit and shooting the guns? Of *COURSE* the 18-34 straight boy demographic ate that up...i mean, damn, half of the audience that was at the matinee showing I was were all guys in that demographic and they clapped and cheered everytime Rihanna showed up...so Universal *won* in that regard.

But, overall, the movie was horrible.

I want to like Kitsch, and it may take for him getting knocked off the A list for a while + doing some smaller roles in both indie and studio films, SHOWING US that his time on FNL wasn't a fluke..he *CAN* act...I just think it's too early for him to do be doing these big budget leading man roles when he really doesn't have that kind of presence...yet.

he'll get there eventually in like 3-5 years but now? No.

I'm convinced that that's how Malin Ackerman gets most of her work. (OK, she's also supposed to be insanely nice so that helps.)

Decker might be able to take over for Malin and January Jones as the blonde expressionaless actress du jour but I think there are a lot of good up and coming actresses who are going to steal that from her.

The one thing she has going for her, sadly enough, is her celebrity status. People want names they recognize so they'll go with a celeb like her over Mia Wachyoumeanthisisn'thowyouspellit or the girl from Descendants.

that's about it...and even then, that's questionable. If she can give me more than her "i'm trying to be emotional but instead it looks like I'm constipated as fuck" face that she was doing all through the movie when she was supposed to be scared or terrified, etc.

probably.

but, when Brits like Alice Eve, Gemma Atherton, Felicity Jones, not to mention Jennifer Lawrence, Rachel MacAdams and the like are still giving quality performances and are still holding court in a lane that Decker *should* be in but won't be because she's lacking in the acting department...

shit...she needs to step her game up lol!

Seriously, I was expecting this to somewhat flop, but that would mean it did worse than "Dark Shadows" on its opening weekend.

Taylor Kitsch may never work on this town again. Or maybe only in the next "Friday Night Lights" movie, which will be probably the only directing job Berg could be able to get.

it did flop in the states but it made 226 million dollars overseas. Universal was *smart* to release overseas weeks in advance to make as much money as they possibly could, then drop it here.

Universal assumed Avengers numbers for this movie. they need to stop assuming from here on out.

he'll get work...but he just won't be carrying any movies right now...but supporting and character roles? i would think so.

but, i hope his agents/manager and he are sitting down and talking about regrouping and where he goes from here cause um, i'm thinking a career retooling is in order...

and dude might need to go on a "vacay" for a while back in British Columbia...cause yea, he's done for now.

Get him into an indie flick or two, show he can *act*, and then he can try to recover.

even *with* the positive reviews of SAVAGES (and his performance has to basically TOP Hayek, Del Toro and Travolta, who I hear are all *bringing* it in this film *and* Lively, who showed with The Town that she brings *A LOT* more to the table than she does as Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl, etc.), Kitsch should go the supporting role/indie route for a few years...

like seek out indie directors/first timers and collaborate, do well in those performances, etc.

then *maybe* comeback....

Because right now, he might just want to go on a seriously extended vacation and just lay low for a while because eventually the finger pointing will turn his away as to why this movie sucked...

shit was cornier and more patriotic than Armageddon and Pearl Harbor put together with all of the slow motion walking, and flag waving and way louder than Transformers 1, 2 and 3

Playing Electronic Battleship has more entertainment value

Taylor will still get work as a supporting player but it'll be a few years before he gets a lead role again. And, honestly, I don't think he ever brought enough to the table to begin with so I doubt he even gets a Colin Farrell second chance.

With Hemsworth's star on the rise and so many other similar young guys like Armie Hammer floating around, Kitsch's smartest move is go to TV in a cop or medical drama. I could have seen him as the lead in Awake or as a part of Southland. Grey's Anatomy fans would have freaked if he joined.

RIGHT?! and let's be *real*, Colin Farrell's people *STAY* trying to hype him as a lead and it's just not true. LOL

I like Colin...as a supporting player/character actor. But as a lead? not even...

but if its an indie, he could do it. Colin just never registered as having a leading man presence.

But, I'm rooting for him to win with this TOTAL RECALL remake (if they don't have the alien with the three tits, stick a fork in it, ish is DONE before it even drops in August! LOLOLOL!)

YES! or get his own show on a cable tv or something...he seems to do well there.

But, I could see him on Grey's, Southland, or even on The Good Wife, as a foil for Kalinda or as an opposing, green attorney who trade courtroom blows with Alicia...

I think he has the potential to be good...but all this came too fast, too soon.

And yes, with Arnie Hammer, Chris and Liam Hemsworth, Henry Cavill, Channing Tatum seeming to have a career surge, Tom Hardy (though he comes off more as character actor who can carry a film without issue), Michael Fassbender,Joel Edgerton, Chris Evans, etc. Taylor is fighting for space in an *already* crowded lane and is being pushed OUT of that lane because he's too close to the edge and all that.

In a few years, if he gets some meatier roles and gets some kind of praise for them and is consistent with those roles, i lead in a mid budgeted studio flick could work.

Right now/the immediate future? OH.HELLS.NAW
