Even though they aren't "spoilers" in a trailer per se, movies are so much more enjoyable when I know absolutely nothing about them.

To get me to care about a GI Joe element, you need to have:

~ Off the chain Mission Impossible/Michael Bay/Matrix levels of off the chain action

~ High tech, sci-fi based weaponry

~ Dope villains with stories I care about (Zartan/Tomax/Xamot/Ninjas)

Just making a quasi military type movie with a bunch of folks shooting and fighting? I could watch Die Hard with a Vengeance for that and still get BW....

This looks like a pass. (And I dug the first one for what it was)

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.

It seems like they are kind of picking up where the last one left off in terms of the storyline with the President but a lot of the actors from the first one seem to be missing.

The execution for the Avengers trailer was a decent B/B+, made into an A by everyone's general excitement.

GI JOE 2 trailer was aimed to convert the disinterested, and it's beautifully executed in doing so. Captures what the tone presumably is perfectly, showcases stars and stunts. Awesome. Full blown A.

Outside of one cool shot circling the crew, they didn't show much that we hadn't seen similar shots of in the previous films. I know what Iron Man flying and Cap jumping looks like. I liked the Hulk bit at the end but the animation looked unfinished. Hence, B+.

It didn't convert everybody. I've talked to a shit ton of people at that Spider-Man event yesterday who, even still after watching the SB spot, say it still looks dumb and are uninterested.

That was one of the most entertaining trailers I've seen in a while.

I probably won't go see this but got damn that is how you make an action movie trailer.

I saw it at the theater.

The Rock was more than enough, but when Bruce Willis came on the screen I bought lost it.

HILARITY.

And this is just minor and none of y'all will really care, but oh boy they got to play Storm Shadow is actually a really good Korean actor. Nice to see they got him to play one of the baddest G.I. Joe characters...

I have a feeling that any scene that isn't action is going to be pretty painful to get through. Then again, if I was 15 years old, I'd probably not really care about that.

http://www.deadline.com/2012/05/g-i-joe-retaliation-moving-to-march-2012-to-add-3d-for-bigger-foreign-box-office/

it's not coming out until MARCH 2013 so the studio can do a CONSCIENTIOUS JOB with the 3D....

either this is shrewd marketing or the film is a hot mess because the 3D should have already been done for this...sounds suspect. But, if you're still going to see it..get those tickets MARCH 2013.

EXCLUSIVE: The sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation was supposed to come out this summer on June 29th. But I’ve learned that Paramount is moving the movie nine months to March 29, 2013, to add 3D. “We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally,” one of the studio execs just told me. “Jim Cameron did all of Titanic‘s 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out.” Paramount has had luck delaying films before: its decision to move Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island gave the director his biggest box office hit ever. Also the execs say that the blockbuster performance of The Hunger Games shows that March can be a prime time of the year to release movies. Of course, Paramount had to talk its partners on GI Joe 2 into the extra nine months of carrying costs – MGM/Spyglass which has 25%, and David Ellison’s Skydance which has another 25%. The $125M-budgeted actioner stars Channing Tatum, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and Bruce Willis and is directed by John Chu.

Tyler must have been psyched, "That opens up the weekend for me! When are they moving it to? Oh, against my 2013 release. Shit."

Bizarre move this late in the game and other studios must be pissed because they could have moved their films to an open weekend.

I think Bourne or Total Recall should move up to that open weekend and avoid opening up against one another. Or Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter should move back a week to avoid The Brave.

plus BOURNE has always been an AUGUST movie...

no need to change that.

though, in jeremy renner's case, he should be *REAL* worried about this film...

if BOURNE LEGACY tanks, he can kiss any chance of him carrying movies form here on out goodbye for real...

he's a few steps above Taylor Kitsch...but still.

so BOURNE needs to stay in August it will make money then...

In response to Reply # 53

At first I thought it should move because it opens against Total Recall, is only two weeks after Dark Knight Rises, and then, the week after it opens, it will probably lose the kids to Will Ferrell/Zach Galifankis (sp?) in The Campaign and then the week after that it will lose action heads to Expendables.

But looking at August, one of the two films should move to the end of the year. Two weekends that are fairly open.

Why switch out of a prime summer slot for March next year, after all the promotion and shit, do they really think they gonna make that much more money with a likely shitty 3D conversion?

Fuck 3D and fuck Paramount

This movie actually looked really good (unlike the 1st one) and I was looking forward to seeing it. I dont want to wait till fucking March to not watch it in 3D.

They'll also have less competition in the states but my guess is that this move is primarily for the overseas market; they won't expect it to change the domestic that much.

Not saying Paramount is expecting to do those types of numbers (they'd be crazy if they did) but they figure that adding 3D to something already building a fan base buzz that they should slap on some 3D for extra numbers.

so dialing it down and then trying to restart the hype machine might be tough when the first movie received mixed reviews.

There's currently nothing ahead of it in terms of major studio releases til the Tom Cruise flick beginning of April. It was gonna get its soul taken domestically and internationally by Spidey and TDKR-- moving it guarantees a month to itself essentially.

The "work on the 3D" angle is a smoke screen-- they're running away from the superhero flicks, period. Maybe they can work more on it too... but it's not *the* reason.

Especially if the Catching Fire (next hunger games movie) comes out next summer, or at least away from the March release like ti got this year.

I imagine this'll give them mroe time to tighten up some of the scenes, maybe even rewrite a few and make a better flick, I'm not even angry.

Now I'm starting to think this had a little bit more to do with the film not being up to par as it did a straight cash grab.

>Big Problems Behind ‘G.I. Joe 2′s Big Delay

By NIKKI FINKE | Tuesday May 29, 2012 @ 9:32pm PDT

EXCLUSIVE: Ever since I scooped the news a week ago about G.I. Joe: Retaliation moving from June 29th to March 29th, 2013, no one was buying Paramount‘s excuse that “adding 3D” was the only reason for the 9 month delay. Least of all me. So I did some snooping. And what I found out shows the difficult decisions which Hollywood moguls are facing in this challenging box office environment when even franchises aren’t sure things. (Witness last weekend’s Men In Black 3.) And at what point and at what cost do the top execs make changes in their films already shooting or in post-production or even five weeks out from release?

The fact is that Paramount became extremely concerned about G.I. Joe 2‘s box office prospects worldwide after test scores were mediocre to bad. Reshoots were needed. Plus, the moguls realized what a complete miscalculation it was to kill off Channing Tatum in the sequel. And even more so at the start of the film. You will remember that Tatum wasn’t a star when the first G.I. Joe was released. But since then his back-to-back successes in The Vow and 21 Jump Street have made him into a draw. And it turned out that the only bright spot for audiences as a result of the G.I. Joe 2 testing was the aborted relationship between Tatum and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

Plus look at the movie poster for Retaliation: you wouldn’t even know Tatum is in the sequel.

http://www-deadline-com.vimg.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/g_i_-joe_-retaliation-poster__120523203355.jpg

Now the movie is being reworked — and reshoots don’t lose a valuable leading man like Tatum by killing him off. “The 3D is an excuse as to not reveal the Tatum of it all,” one of my sources tells me. Of course this summer Tatum appears in Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike as a stripper (inspired by Tatum’s own experiences, pre-stardom). And my sources insist that Paramount didn’t want uniformed Channing to compete with stripping Channing. Not with those abs.

Here is how Paramount insiders explain to me what happened. And clearly it’s not just because “We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally” now that Russia and China are building new 3D theaters by the week, as the studio said a week ago:

“This was a case of letting a schedule to fill a summer slot dictate the film not being in 3D even though we knew that would be the most commercial version of the film. Then in the spring there were 2 big events. First John Carter lost $200M despite the best efforts of the Pixar brain trust. But the 3D film managed to gross over $200M overseas, nearly tripling its U.S. take.

“Also Channing Tatum had a breakout spring, starring in The Vow and 21 Jump Street. In our first screening of the film the reaction from audiences was good but with 2 big concerns: 1) They didn’t like the fact that Channing and The Rock really didn’t have any time to develop a friendship before Channing died, and 2) Why wasn’t it going to be in 3D? We went back and shot another week with Channing to develop more of his story with The Rock, which made the film play much better. But we didn’t have the time to be in 3D.

“Then a week ago Battleship basically had the same performance as John Carter – $60M-$70M U.S. and just over $200M international. That was just a wake-up call that said to us we need to offer the best version of the film irrespective of summer market share to ensure the best possible performance. And not being in 3D will cost us a ton of business internationally.”

But the big question is how much this deliberate delay of G.I. Joe 2‘s release will affect the pic’s cost. After all, the cost of MIB3 soared when the time travel elements of Etan Cohen’s script had to be re-worked by Jeff Nathanson who needed more time to pull off the tricky plot device while Cohen worked on another project. So the film shut down for about six weeks, which is a rarity for a major tentpole, and then Cohen came back to finish the movie. That caused the cost to skyrocket from a range of $225M (which is what Sony claims as the budget) to $300M (which is what rival studios say it really was). Between that and all the gross profit participants, that’s a lot of coin before Sony sees profit. Of course, Paramount had to talk its partners on GI Joe 2 into the extra nine months of carrying costs – MGM, which has 25%, and David Ellison’s Skydance, which has another 25%. Paramount sources claim to me that the budget for the $125M-budgeted actioner is stll under control. I’m not sure I believe their claim that the changes will result in just $5M more:

“Several 3D houses had already approached us about doing the film in 3D. This move gives us the time to do it right. We are having conversations with Stereo D and Prime Focus about doing the 3D work for a reduced fee in exchange for a piece of 3D upside. Also, interest rates are very low right now. So 9 months does not have a huge impact on budget. It should stay under $130M.”

Meanwhile, other sources tell Deadline that G.I. Joe 2 director Jon M. Chu is “shellshocked” over the release date move. Paramount kept him on a very tight leash from the beginning of the production. Among other things, they wouldn’t let him bring onboard David Nicksay, who has worked with Chu as executive producer on the Step Up movies and the Justin Bieber documentary. Hollywood, too, was gobsmacked that Paramount vacated the primo date, especially because the studio blew a wad on a Super Bowl commercial and already was starting TV and outdoor ads for GI Joe 2. Even The Rock felt forced to calm fan fears about the film like in this Twitter exchange on May 23rd:

DwayneJohnson ‏@TheRock It will be. Designing new scenes to enhance 3D. RT: @JimmyinGA: Was looking forward to GI Joe next month. Hope the 3D is worth the wait.

True, Paramount had luck delaying Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island to give the director his biggest box office hit ever. Now the question is whether lightning can strike twice.

to capitalize on the heat Channing has for 21 Jump Street and The Vow and now Magic Mike...

redo the movie so his character is IN it so as to *not* piss off his fans who would have come in droves to see it, saw that he was killed off before the end of the first act and go OFF about it and spread bad buzz....

though something tells me this movie probably *ISN'T* that good and this could all be a smoke screen to address *THAT*.

either way, its a big ass mess...that i'm going to keep watching unfold!

The first movie had a better plot and cast, but this one was better made and had better action scenes and shit. Olympus Has Fallen seems a lot more plausible than this. People are gonna love this and I get it, but yo how is Olympus Has Fallen more plausible than this? Also, I'm sorry but, DJ Cotrona (fuck his face) and his character Flint were both annoying. They were better keeping Channing Tatum as Duke. Walton Goggins was awesome in this, The Rock was awesome in this, RZA was awesome in this, Joseph Mazzello as Mouse was awesome in this, but Jonathan Pryce is having so much fun in this it's infectious. This is Snakes Eyes' movie BTW.

As far as to which one was better it's this one because the first 20 minutes murders the entire last movie. It's just a shame a saw the best part of this film at my IMAX press day which was the mountain. Also, the 3D sucked pretty bad. The mountain was the best use of 3D. For something that was delayed for almost 9 months it's a shame the 3D is ass.

They brought Cobra Commander back w/o JGL. They could've easily done the same for Destro if Eccleston didn't want to return. Had him lookin all menacin in the freeze tank just to leave him there?

There was a lot of other shit that didn't make much sense either though.

You mean to tell me they didn't frisk Storm Shadow & remove his shurikens before placing him in the freeze tank?

Secret Service schmuck wearin a Cobra pin at the press conference?

I usually don't care too much about accents but both Jinx & Firefly's bothered me for some reason too.

Olympus Has Fallen is the way to go. It's definetly a fun time at the movies. BTW after peeping the trailer for White House Down, I'll gladly pay to see the same movie twice.

>The first movie had a better plot and cast, but this one was

Agreed for the most part

Also, I'm sorry but, DJ Cotrona (fuck his
>face) and his character Flint were both annoying.

Flint & Firefly were given too much screentime

They were
>better keeping Channing Tatum as Duke.

Would've been better had they given Bruce Willy more screen time. But The Rock was better when Tatum was w/ him

Walton Goggins was
>awesome in this, The Rock was awesome in this,

Yep yep

RZA was awesome
>in this, Joseph Mazzello as Mouse was awesome in this,

No no. RZA appears outta nowhere for no reason. Those looked like deleted scenes from Man w/ the Iron Fists. Not sure which was worse: The follow up to Storm Shadow's backstory or RZA narrating it. The unintended comedy was the only redeeming factor. Mouse wasn't bad but wasn't very memorable either.

but
>Jonathan Pryce is having so much fun in this it's infectious

He has a blast but that UN sequence is so ridiculous I literally smh the entire time

>This is Snakes Eyes' movie BTW.

I'm just glad they got the costume right this time. I don't think they knew who's movie they wanted it to be as it flips from Duke to Roadblock, to Storm Shadow to Snake Eyes to that ridiculous UN meeting.

>As far as to which one was better it's this one because the
>first 20 minutes murders the entire last movie.

The first 20 minutes of both were pretty similar. It's the first Firefly scene, the mountain sequence & them Zeusin London that puts it over the top.

It's just a
>shame a saw the best part of this film at my IMAX press day
>which was the mountain. Also, the 3D sucked pretty bad. The
>mountain was the best use of 3D. For something that was
>delayed for almost 9 months it's a shame the 3D is ass.

Yeah you can tell they spent all the time & effort on that one scene. I wonder if it pays off in the end.

Agreed. But I gotta say Firefly was a badass. I'd rather have Destro through. That shit still makes no sense.

It was distracting to me that he shows up for 15 minutes in the middle of the fucking movie. Leaves and then shows up again for the last 40 minutes.

At this point shit got so absurd, I openly embraced RZA's bad acting cause he was giving it his all and you can tell. And I must add that whole part was rushed as fuck. And Jinx's introduction was weak for a major character. "Snake Eyes. I know you don't trust her...". Um what?

I doubt it. Once word gets out about how shitty the 3D is, the sales are gonna mostly come from 2D.

Apparently they thought just naming people after GI Joe characters was enough in terms of development.

Flint was shown to be a rule breaker... and then he broke no rules.

Lady Jae's backstory was beside the point.

Dwayne Johnson played 'Block, who could have used more of The Rock.

Ray Stevenson's character was a southern accent.

Cobra Commander had ZERO reason to be in this movie.
They should have just had Zartan trying to run the Cobra ship while those Commander and Destro were imprisoned (and maybe have Storm Shadow break them out as a post-credits button.)

Story-wise, the stupidest part of the film was even stupider because it had no point. The scene at the nuke summit served zero purpose. I know they tried to sell one but there was no need for that bit at all.
I was even willing to overlook silly stuff like Lady Jaye sneaking into a dinner with the President despite the fact that only three known Joe's were still alive and apparently nobody took the time to learn what they looked like. Also, the President naming his task force Cobra might have raised red flags since, you know, they just imprisoned a guy name Cobra Commander, but, again, I took those as par for the course in a film like this. But that missile scene was just dumb and it didn't need to be.

The film was basically all third act. They suffer the apparent defeat at the start and then it's full scale attack from there on out.

It's a weird film. I wouldn't say it's necessarily bad but everything in it was so not good that it wasn't entertaining. It didn't do anything wrong but save for a couple of scenes it most certainly didn't get anything right.

It's not like she never met her father. If Bruce Willis was somehow REALLY her father it would be even stupider and more convoluted than a pointless backstory needs to be.

You saw the tack on to Storm Shadow's backstory right?

That's where this series is headed

Boosting Storm Shadow's story at least had a reason, getting Storm to fight on the side of the Joe's. Making Lady Jaye's meaningless backstory more convoluted would be stupid for no reason. Even less reason that the stupid nuke launch scene.

But the first GI Joe didn't do all that well and I can't imagine this film will have legs either. Best case scenario, they wait a few years and reboot the whole thing.

Jonathan Pryce kills it, and Adrianne Palicki actually shows pluck for a character written primarily to dress seductively (which makes the girl-power theme very odd)...

... but the characters aren't developed, the action is weakly shot, and, worst of all, there really isn't a "hero" to root for.

In Olympus Has Fallen, our hero has a personal fall and there's a large need for redemption. Here, nothing changes for The Rock. Sure, he loses a friend, but you don't get nearly enough build to feel it. Where is The Rock's redemption? My heroes need, with very few exceptions, redemption.

Not shooting the President and losing a fight with Firefly was the supposed Apparent Defeat that pushed the Joe's backs against the wall, hoping for one last shot to redeem themselves. Except their backs were ALWAYS against the wall and despite Lady Jaye saying, "Remember, this is your ONE shot.", it sure didn't feel like it was their only shot to expose him. (I mean, if an alley across the street was an isolated enough spot that the Secret Service would have never thought to cover, I think you probably could have ample opportunities to take a crack at the guy.) And, as you noted, there really wasn't a need for redemption.

After this and Gangster Squad, I'm starting to think that Zombieland was a fluke for both the writers and the director. You can blame the studio for a lot of things but I can't even imagine how this could have been a strong script to begin with.

I enjoyed the first one way more than this one

lots of nitpicks, liked the mask for Cobra Commander but why they lose his snake rasp, it bugged me. I would have preferred "yo joe" to "hooah" RZA's dialogue was beyond awful. How the Rock gonna get his ass beat by Firefly dude after just explaining how he beat up everybody in his gym? Lots of silly plot details but if it was fun was willing to forgive. This wasn't much fun for me unfortunately. I didn't even think the mountain fight was all that impressive, maybe was in the theater idk..

Im not sure why I was hoping for better, previews showed best parts I guess. Oh well.
