The reviews are rolling in, and they look rotten

it seems like they don't like Captain America. They're complaining that the character is too simplistic, never questions his powers, etc.

It's Captain America - he's not dark or complex, he's simple and he kicks ass. That's it.

first and foremost this movie is about captain america. people really need to understand who captain america was/is. don't go in expecting superman or the dark knight. he's not witty or cool like tony stark. i think fanboys and girls will love this movie because it stayed true to who captain america really is/was. is also a great setup for the avengers movie.

They played it very straight. A few genuinely witty lines in there but not a whole lot of creativity. In a way it was refreshing because it wasn't dark and brooding. It was just a straight ahead vanilla ice cream and apple pie kind of movie. But it just became very bland for me. I really enjoyed the first half of the movie with the exposition, transformation and the war bonds scenes much better than the rag-tag team of secondary characters blowing shit up portion in the latter half.

Hayley Atwell's character makes absolutely no sense. At all.

Tommy Lee Jones was great.

The Army was not integrated at that point.

It winds up averaging out to a "B" or so. The first half had some real pop to it but it just kinda goes sub-average once they try to turn it into Dirty Dozen/Inglorious Basterds.

Still, Evans really nails the role and manages to stay likeable/human in a VERY broad movie.

I saw it at midnight and was falling asleep and walked out being indifferent to it.

I saw it an hour ago and the only complaint I have is the pacing and the weird way that Bucky died and no one gave a shit. Some shit took too long and some stuff was rushed. All the actors did a fine job though.

Not as good as First Class, probably a little below Thor as well. Evans was fine as Cap, the script was good, and it didn't feel like it dragged too much. It just wasn't particularly memorable.

Tony perfected Howard Starks' swag. Hilarious that Cap didn't know what fondue was. As Avengers set up films go, the Iron Man flicks have been my fave. I can't wait to see how they tie it all in.

That's what makes them interesting. I always wanted to see someone build a comic universe on the big screen... comic book characters are linked and make cross appearances so why not comic book movies. That's what make solid B movies like this one was seem greater than they are. It's all building to something... it really is the modern day version of the old serials.

I enjoyed CA more than Thor but it's getting to where these are can't miss on at least a basic entertainment level. Marvel hit a home run when they decided to take this one.

The first act is great, the setup and it's "origin" story. The last 2/3 seem rushed. Overall, Chris Evans is Captain America. He played it straight. The rest of the cast was fine. The accents were all over the place but it didn't bother be. I loved Hayley Atwell in the role even though she was OK.

very, very serialized feel, which is a great thing.
it was a well balanced adventure film IMO, moreso than a superhero movie. to me that perspective completely alters the quality of the movie, especially n relation to the others. some of what i've seen critics trash amounts to it not being iron man or thor when it is in fact a completely different movie as it SHOULD be.

and evans played the wholesome, good natured patriot to a hilt without entering "america, FUCK YEAH!" territory, which i appreciate. between tony, thor, bruce, and steve, steve is by far the easiest to root for. he was perfectly cast and perfectly played- as were the others, to be honest- but his character is by far the easiest to relate to, understand, cheer on, and he's easily the guy i would put my faith in to save the day above the other three; n other words, they fucing nailed it IMO.

tommy lee hams up another lovable curmudgeon; his character was a drag and a bore that wasn't really needed outside of the grenade scene, however his grumpy old man routine made it entertaining enough that i didn't dwell too much on the annoyance and uselessness of the character itself. because of steve's nature, i believed his anguish when the scientist bought the farm. that's partly because they didn't go overboard by gving him an unreasonably emotional response; in fact, they did it perfectly imo.

i LOVE the way they handled the relationship with peggy- in fact, all the relationships in the marvel universe films have been handled very well. i can't stand the old boy gets girl story, i like that they all have a measure of complexity to them and they are all more or less left hanging, and the CA relationship was nothing but a tease all movie, and i enjoyed that.

caps team was whatever, i'm not a neal mcdonough fan at all and having dum dum in there just felt a little wasted with what he had. who knows if he shows up as a sheild agent somehow.

SPOILER-
someone earlier was harping on what happened with bucky, and while i agree it lacked the weight i'd hoped for, it was a faithful happening that i can live with. if they remain faithful and another CA gets made, we'll see the winter soldier at some point, and that's a good reason for them not to dwell on his death. IMO the gravity of WS showing up later would heightened if we cared a little more when he "died", but it wasn't handled so poorly that i'm ready to riot.

all in all a very enjoyable story that was well made. in fact i think this is my favorite story from these films.

*swipe*

-Red Skull says at the beginning of the film, "And the Fuhrer is too busy digging for trinkets in the desert", to look for a much more powerful item like the Tesseract. This is a direct reference to "Indiana Jones & the Raiders of the Lost Ark" which "Captain America" director, Joe Johnston worked on as an Art Director, winning him his first Oscar.

You're very forgiving. Some of the relationships in these Marvel movies are cool, but they're hit and miss at best. The love story in Thor between Thor and Natalie Portman's character SUCKED, for example.

they had what amounted to a pensive flirtation that developed into strong feelings and was left in a state of limbo at the end.

my point here is that none of them fit the typical love story in most movies. they are all left in some form of limbo, there is always an element of longing and wanting in them. so, love them or hate them, dislike the way the the love story was written or whatever, i'm specifically talking about the cliffhanger elements present in all of them. i like that these love stories go unfulfilled.

I didn't like how they edit some scenes. The one where he's gliding down, they cut, then all of a sudden he's on the ground? I hated out they took out Bucky, I thought it was ridiculous how they had NO military tactics AT.ALL. I understand you have a super soldier but really? Anybody else notice how Hugo Weaving's accent disappeared and didn't how up until the end? Also, I can understand Cap running along those trains but those other dudes? Come on! How come Cap didn't just use his shield to jump over that cage of fire? Or just use his shield or ANYTHING?! LOL! Last thing, Red Skull ain't the type to go on with the prattle. He catches you & kill you! He also lets his subordinates KNOW who Cap was. How was he able to just walk around the Hydra based like that w/o getting evaporated by those lasers? I thought it would have been cool for Red Skull to do that thing where be blows that smoke on your face and it eats it away and your face looks like a red skull. I know it may sound like a lot of complaints but I still give it a 7

A couple of the montages were a little slapdash, but the script was solid, the performances were all REALLY strong, and the effects were terrific in their stylized way.

Just reaffirms what I'd been saying all along: Joe Johnston is the MAN if you want an old-school earnest action flick.

i mean, the ending and the avengers tie in was a bit...off, but overall, it was a good movie.

sometimes, superheroes don't need an extended backstory or complex history to be good...

Captain America doesn't and it was very good.

Chris Evans isn't as bad as I thought he was...he is perfect as captain america and managed to hit the RIGHT emotional notes...i see someone brought his acting coach to the set with him!

Hayley Atwell: wow...she didn't really get much to do but she gave Agent Carter some well needed spunk and depth...and str8 dudes/lesbians/bisexual womens: Hayley in the red dress--let's just say that MEN and WOMEN in my movie theater clapped for her! LOL!

it was a good film.

it didn't need to be in 3D at all...

Yes, Captain America has a man named America invading other countries and killing foreigners-- but it's STILL only the third most obvious propaganda film this year.

It's easily the best though.

I will say that maybe none of those are on the propaganda level of The Expendables, which is AWESOME to watch from a political manipulation perspective.

http://blog.melanism.com/2011/07/25/movie-of-the-week-captain-america-the-first-avenger/

Captain America: The First Avenger was a great origin movie for one of the oldest characters in the Marvel Universe. It was a great decision to do a movie almost entirely in the 1940′s. Director Joe Johnston was definitely channeling Raiders of the Lost Ark and his own The Rocketeer. This was easily the second best Avengers-related movie (right behind the first Iron Man).

The movie really shines in the first 2/3rds of the movie highlighting how scrawny Steve Rogers physically and emotionally became Captain America. It’s not the best origin movie (Batman Begins) but, from the alley beating to the USO shows to the Bucky rescue mission, I think it had the best hero origin in a movie. The final third of the movie was just okay. The final battle was kinda blah. It was just set-up to get Captain America to the present which was disappointing. If this movie wasn’t tying into The Avengers flick coming out next year, I think we would have gotten a better conclusion.

Thoughts and observations:

* I was mildly concerned with the casting of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers mostly because 90% of his roles are cocky guys but he really came through. He wasn’t perfect but he sold me on Rogers’ selflessness and devotion to duty.

* The casting in this movie as a whole was great. Hayley Atwell was great as Peggy Carter. I’m glad she was never a damsel-in-distress like most female characters in action movies are regulated to. Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull looked and sounded like he was modeled after an Indiana Jones Nazi villains like Dr. René Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark or Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (and I mean that in a good way). The best bit of casting was Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips. He was the J. Jonah Jameson of Captain America. I look forward to the YouTube video of all his great lines.

* The special effects that made Chris Evans a 90 pound weakling and gave Hugo Weaving a talking skull as a face were very impressive. I expected the effects to take me out of the film a bit (like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) but I found myself forgetting at parts that Evans face was pasted on that scrawny body.

* I enjoyed the hints/easter eggs to future Captain America stories (Bucky (Sebastian Shaw) as a sniper, Arnim Zola (Toby Jones) in the magnifying lamp mirroring how he looks now).

* Listen, I understand that Marvel Films is trying to make their generally all-white superheroes have a little diversity but I found it more believable that a scrawny kid could be turned into a super solider than Captain America’s unit included a black guy (Derek Luke) and a Japanese-American (Kenneth Choi) and there was NO racism. Everybody drank together and sang together. I know its’s a comic book movie and there’s a bit of fantasy involved but don’t go so far in the other direction, ignoring race completely, that it’s ridiculous.

* I did not like how the movie ended abruptly. It should have ended with Rogers either going to Peggy’s grave or visiting her in a retirement home and having that dance.

* The Avengers teaser after the credits was exciting but all the footage went by so fast, it’s hard to really judge. I need some geek to examine it frame-by-frame like The Zapruder film.

(For the record, 1) Iron Man, 2) Captain America: The First Avenger, 3) Thor, 4) The Incredible Hulk and 5) Iron Man 2)

I was entertained, it was well made and it didn't really make many mistakes but it also didn't take any risks. The most disappointing thing was how forgettable the action scenes were.

I think if you go in with middling expectations, you won't be let down. If you're expecting anything like Iron Man or Batman, well, you probably shouldn't be expecting that from Captain America.

Tommy Lee Jones and Dominic Cooper were great and it seemed like Haley Atwell got a boob job for two scenes. Where were they hiding those the rest of the movie?

Evans, Atwell, Jones (both of em), Tucci & Cooper all played their plarts well. Derek Luke always looks like he's bored playing a military man ever since his debut but that didn't matter much. I expected more from Weaving.

Should've known Joe Johnston couldn't knock this out the park after he fucked up The Wolfman so bad. The action scenes were dull as doo doo.

Looking forward to Chris being a better Cap in The Avengers than he was here but that teaser didn't do much for me either.
