"Poll question: Best Star Trek Captain"

Who was the best Captain in all of the Star Trek shows?

Granted, Kirk got the most alien-pussy, but he probably had a few undiscovered STD's too.

Picard had some kinda of strange French with a British Accent-thing going on, but he dat nigga got assimilated and STILL came back.

I tossed Archer in there just to round out the list.

Poll result (35 votes)
Benjamin Sisko (R.I.P.) (10 votes)Vote
James Tiberius Kirk (8 votes)Vote
Jean-Luc Picard (17 votes)Vote
Katheryn Janeway (0 votes)Vote
Jonathan Archer (0 votes)Vote

It'll all make sense by the time the Final credits start rolling.

DS9's Finale was MUCH MORE satisfying than TNG and VOY.

I consider Terra Prime as ENT's Finale.

Deep Space Nine was great because it showed growth within all of the characters.

Bashir went from a snobby young upstart to the moral voice of Senior Staff.

Kira went from being the "Angry Native" to actually having compassion for Cardassians and recognizing that Bajor's future relied upon and not terrorism.

Miles. . .well they just kept screwing Miles over. He got killed, mentally incarcerated for 20 years, oh, and his child was sent to a Hell dimension, too.

Captain Sisko finally embraced his destiny as a religious icon to Bajor and not just the "overseer" of some 3rd world planet.

The only person from TNG that ever came close to that type of evolution was Data and a lot of that has to do with the movies continuing his story-arc.

to hear that they continue to grow is awesome, and really proves that this show was mature from the getgo and knew what it was up to.

They do mess over Miles, don't they ... Dude gets imprisoned during his vacation, and one that he didn't even want to go on to begin with.

"All Good Things" was one of the best finales ever. It was perfect for the show. I'm surprised it turned out that good considering most of Season 7 episodes were horrible.

That might be just about the strangest captain speech scene I've ever watched. Perhaps I have selective memory, but I don't think that black/white stuff was really on people's minds at all in Star Trek that far in the future.

And that's super wack of Sisko to pull that out as a Star Fleet commander.

Who the fuck wrote that scene? lol

Granted, it's a big "message" moment but I took that scene as Sisko revealing a bit of a historical snob side to himself. He's a bit of an elitist and letting his prejudice show.
And some of his experiences in the series before that event had made him a bit more sensitive to racial issues in a historical context not just for humans but also with his experiences dealing with Bajor and the Cardassians.

Now, while from a racial/historical context, he had a point. But as Cassidy puts it in so many words, IT'S THE FUCKING HOLODECK BEN. LIGHTEN UP.

In the 24th century they probably still haven't recovered from Katrina and the oil spill. Plus, I'm not as avid a fan of DS9 as I was of TNG, but did this episode come after he had that fugue where he was a 50's science fiction writer & after he became the leader of the Bell Riots? If so his sensitivity kinda makes sense in terms of the character.

Plus, didn't his father run an old fashioned 20th century NO restaurant? No one was dropping more Earth history than Sisko (which, in the Star Trek universe is saying a lot).

It's Star Trek, my dude. Everyone in the Star Trek universe has perfect knowledge of 20th/21st century Earth history.

>And that's super wack of Sisko to pull that out as a Star

Eh, he didn't want to help a holodeck program. The whole station banding together over it was crazy to me to begin with.

This wasn't quite a stretch. A little sentimental but most of the crew involved had a personal stake in helping out Vic. He may be a hologram but he's responsible for helping Odo and Nog pull their heads out of their ass when shit got grim for them. O'Brien and Bashir are confirmed holosuite life partners by this point in the series. Everyone else is along for the ride since there was nothing better to do at that point in time of the war.

That's the part that kills it for me, although I guess I'm being a hypocrite since I had no beef with them all goofing off for the baseball episode.

He didn't live in a perfect galaxy where everybody loved each other and had given peace a chance.

He lived in a world where cats named Dukat was WAITING to snuff out him and every Bajoran.

He lived in a world where Admirals were hatching plans to take over Earth and willing to SMOKE anybdoy who tried to stop them.

Sisko was the Realest Captain in it!

Picard was almost textbook perfect captain; but imho that was his flaw, dude was a little too zen monk at times.

Sisco still had that needed emotion and risk taking...that dash of Captain Kirk, that you kinda needed if your freeballing it in space. That could also be a flaw tho.

Picard wins by a hair.

You can waterboard him, torture him, clone him, turn him into a Borg, and he STILL comes back. Picard wins this one pretty easily

I liked the end of that ep when he admitted he was about to crack and say he did see 3 lights. Even the man had his limits...

How many Jem'Hadar fleets did Picard take out?

Sisko has whupped ass in TWO different quadrants and centuries!

It's about bettering yourself. (paraphrase from "The Neutral Zone" LOL)

Picard brought PEACE to many more worlds than Sisko did. He helped to end civil wars, got a whole planet off crack, and overall was a noted diplomat, archaeologist, and scientist. He is the total package.

This is true -- but by the same token, Sisko couldn't be given the advantage solely for "kicking ass across 2 quadrants." If you're judging them in terms of war and peace, some consideration has to be given to the fact that Sisko's biggest enemy, the Dominion, brought more of the total war concept than Picard's biggest enemy, the Borg. At the same time that Sisko compiled a more extensive war record, Picard also helped to avert/end Klingon civil war twice, and brokered peace on I dunno how many planets during his 7 or so years on the Entrprise-D.

it's at the end of the 3rd season, not the beginning. my bad. GREAT ep when it happens, too. i need to go back and watch DS9 myself. i wasn't as slavishly devoted to it as i was to TNG, but it was a spectacular show.

That being said,

Picard was the best "Captain". He was like the MVP of Starfleet captains. Fundamentally sound, he always made the right decision. He was a great diplomat, his battle tactics were superb, and he was great at managing his crew. He put his people in position to win. He was so gully, that he got the respect of Klingons.

Sisko is a close second though. He was gangsta with his. He didn't give a F-ck! He hit "Q". Picard never hit Q! He took down the Dominion AND the Cardassians! He battled 1950s racists. Saved Starfleet HQ from a Changeling attack. But he wasn't the best diplomat. It took him 7 years to accept his destiny.

The answer is Picard.
