"Hi haters. Glee is back."

Best quotes of the night:

"I just got into the University of California Los Angeles. Maybe you've heard of it. It's in Los Angeles."

"Did you know dolphins are just gay sharks?"

"I'm engorged with venom and triumph."

And guess what, theater nerds? Jonathan Groff and Idina Menzel joined the cast tonight. OH IT'S ON.

In the first thirty seconds, these motherfuckers went RIGHT BACK to the "if we don't do XYZ, GLEE IS FINISHED" well. Come the fuck on. I'm not watching all season based on that shit again. Sue's return was annoying, too. Lazy-ass writing, man.

I mean, here's how lazy the writing has already gotten: that Vogue video starring Sue? HOW WAS THAT ENTIRE THING NOT HILARIOUS? It had maybe fifteen seconds of funny.

Even the musical stuff is disappointing. Remember that number Quinn had where she didn't even dance, she just walked back and forth while everyone else danced? NOW EVERYONE SEEMS TO BE DOING THAT.

I'll finish the season out and probably give the early part of the second season a chance. I'm a sucker for this show, but I need them to live up to the potential of the first 5 or 6 episodes.

But as far as half season premieres go that was pretty damn terrible.

Jane Lynch killed it and there were some other nice one liners but overall it was pretty painful to watch. It's basically High School Musical: The TV Show but with more edge to it. The opening act - yikes. They should have just had a voice over explain everything to get us through it and move on.

I only watched the pilot before this but I feel like this episode amped up everything I didn't like.

My guilty pleasure will have to still be Bones (which I just started watching the reruns of).

The Matthew Morrison/Kristen Chenowith sequence alone was better than anything in the first two episodes upon returning.

Heavyhanded? Sure. But Glee does that well. And outside of the Springsteen bit, this one wasn't as awkward on the segues as the first two eps.

It also focused on Mercedes, Kurt, Finn, and Quinn... it took focus away from the same ol' plotlines. GOOD. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'd dare say she needs to be a regular, but I'm not sure how they work that part out just yet. But more people who can sing their ass off on this show will only help.

Finn's singing is really starting to piss me off especially when you have him right next to guys who can really sing, read: Kurt.

They had some great one-liners in this ep including the Hi Haters favorite: "I hate Duke like I hate the Nazis". Close behind: "Why don't you two have a show on Bravo?"

I mean, come on. She's no Diana/Stephanie.

The show needs more Kurt, period. He has the best storylines and the best-written moments.

I agree about Finn's singing... he's fine, but listening to them autotune the fuck out of his singing after Kurt sang a couple verses... ouch, lol.

This ep does potentially push Jane Lynch's character in an interesting direction.

On one hand, a new Cheno ep sounds fun, as well as breaking from the repetitive story. On the other hand, it pretty much keeps with the pattern they've set that they'll do 2-3 weak eps, have a really cool one, then back to the weakness. I don't have time for shit that is going to suck on schedule.

And hence, I've seen pretty much every episode.

How is this critically acclaimed? It's basically a soap opera with lots of queer singing plus Jane Lynch, who is the only bright spot in the show.

There's nothing clever or interesting about any of the other characters or the story.

Do people just like the musical numbers? Is anyone actually interested in the plot or characters, or are people overlooking that it's a terribly written show because they're a sucker for ensemble covers of pop songs? If that's the case, I guess I understand, but nobody's actually co-signing the show itself, are they?

How they keep churning through all the available plot lines week after week and tossing characters on the "used up apathy" pile is amazing, and the links to the songs they do use are poor to say the least. Cop Rocks at least had a plot.

And that Snuffaluffagus looking chick that was playing the three dudes last night is supposed to be hot? Come on.

It makes the show better that it's not some hot chick playing someone that every guy inexplicably overlooks.

The problem is that I find her to be completely annoying so it makes the show almost impossible to watch.

...which features much more simplistic writing. (Well, not as simplistic as the first act of the 2nd season premiere that I watched but still...)

I've only watched two episodes but the main reason that I didn't even bother giving it another shot was because I just didn't like that girl (and wasn't a huge fan of the guy either). I don't know. Complaining about the story in this seems like complaining that 90210 is over-the-top.

But 90210 wasn't as critically acclaimed as this show is. Critics eat this shit up, and the show is just as formulaic and cliched.

And I think most critics love this kind of shit. I don't consider critics to be any different than comic book geeks, hipsters, etc. They all seem to have similar tastes. You know when a film is going to click with them even if it isn't very good (Benjy Button, Atonement).

A lot of the positive reviews read like this: "It's not perfect, but in a sea of procedural conformity, Glee is its own weird, often enchanting little island escape."

It also benefits from the last season Entourage phenomena. A show can have one or two funny lines and a single good moment and people act like that made the whole half hour worthwhile, no matter how stupid the story was.

story line and focus on both of those characters.

Leah Michelle is a great vocal talent. Not the greatest ever and she's no Kristen Chenoweth but she's damn good. Her acting is fairly decent, but the character they're directing and writing her to play... is sort of flat. She's fairly one dimensional and therefore everything involving her is sort of boring. They've done just about everything they can do and lately the songs they've been giving her have been a bit lackluster for her style.

The writers need to start working on exploring the other storylines and characters more in depth. They're all infinitely more interesting and are all pretty competent singing talents.

Or they could just make their main storlyines with Rachael, Finn, and Schuster more compelling.

it was weird that they gave brandy's part to the black girl and monica's part to the latina(?) girl...that clearly should've been reversed and it would've worked much better.

the spring season started off bad but it has gotten better. not a HUGE fan, but my S.O. loves this show so i see it pretty much every week.

...and Quinn hasn't had a song in a while now, and that "ice ice baby" was maybe the wackest thing i've seen them do....

My favorite number changed hands twice. It used to be Artie's "Dancing With Myself," then tonight it went to Schu and NPH for "Dream On," then Artie SNATCHED THAT SHIT RIGHT BACK WITH TWO KILLER NUMBERS. "Artie" getting down for Safety Dance was the most awesome shit so far on this show. Dude was killing it.

but wow this show did not appeal to me at all. I can generally get down with some cheesy musical entertainment, but there seemed like there was zero substance to this show. I probably shouldn't pass judgment after watching a single episode but man was it terrible. The characters all seemed like made up jerks who don't exist in real life but are tied together through pop songs.

Was this a bad episode or was it just me who thinks this show is awful?

It's had some bright spots over the past few weeks but the terrible writing is really starting to make the show hard to watch. It used to be bearable because they were making some great song choices and how and where they were doing the songs felt more natural. Plus there was more Sue Sylvester. Catching a Glee episode that doesn't involve Jane Lynch at all is a bad time to catch Glee.

I'm actively trying to decide how much longer I'm watching this show.

Oh and they need to stop with this shitty ass, formulaic "Mr Schu has a weekly assignment for us" schtick that they're beating into the ground. Ryan Murphy can write better than this and it shows when he's writing stuff for some of the other characters. I'm not asking for David Simon or Sorkin quality writing, just something that seems passable.

too. Finn was right on until he started throwing around the slurs. Kurt's been stalking and trying to manipulate his life to try to get with him. Kurt has some apologizing to do too.

...and wtf at them just dropping on him that they're moving in with them? Is it his house too or is he a permanent guest?

I've sen like three episodes, like one a year or something.

The last one I saw was the season 2 Valetine's episode. The show is okay; there's a good joke every now and then, but the plots are very soap opera-ish, the musical transitions are ham-fisted, and AUTOTUNE, AUTOTUNE, AUTOTUNE.

I dunno. Does it get better?

But the show gets way worse very very verrrrrrry quickly into Season 2. Season 3 was totally off the rails, I hear-- I stopped watching midway through Season 2. It was dreadful.

Damn near everyone you hear sing on TV or radio is AutoTunes (actually, in most cases, they're Melodyne-d, which allows the engineer to drag errant notes into their proper place on the music scale in post) these days - even if they can sing; in the iTunes era of easily accessible singles & songs being played in far more venues with digital clarity, labels want "perfect" records...

...but when it's done improperly, as on :"Glee" (and in other places, think Chris Brown records or Eddie Murphy in "Dreamgirls"), it's painfully obvious that they're doing pitch correction. Everyone sounds wobbly.
