"I'm tallying now. Last seconders, get em in before 2."
Sun Mar-28-10 10:27 AM by Frank Longo

*************

Here's the deal. You think the Academy is bound to get it wrong. They always do. Well, now it's our turn.

I want you to post up your 5 favorites in ten major categories-- Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Animated Feature (a new SLA category!... and no, Freddy, for the sake of these awards, Avatar does NOT count as an Animated Feature).

I would also like you to rank these from best to worst-- 5 points for your favorite, 1 point for your 5th favorite. If you don't have 5 you enjoyed in a category, rank the ones you did find praiseworthy (example: Best Actress isn't the deepest field, so if you have only three performances you dug, give out 5, 4, and 3 points to those three).

I realize many of us live in cities that get limited release films much later, so you have up until the end of the month to post your official selections. I will then add up the votes, The official Spilled Latte winners will be announced the day before the actual Oscars, so that we can brag the next day about how much better our list is.

By the way, PLEASE ONLY MAKE ONE LIST! Multiple amendments make it very very difficult for the person keeping track-- me. So wait if you want to... just don't dick me around with tons of changes.

Also, I'm gonna be deleting extraneous posts that have nothing to do with rule clarification or declaration of list formation. So if the post count suddenly drops, you'll know why, lol. Just clearin out the clutter to make my job easier.

Let's see them lists, people. Choose em, rank em, throw em up.

Do foreign films never win or even get nominated for the top gongs because there's a separate foreign film category, or because the judges are ignorant fools?

Cos if it's the latter I want to SERIOUSLY promote both The White Ribbon and A Prophet for top gongs. Oh and Mesrine should be up there too. And Let The Right One In. Fuck, this is why foreign films don't get considered, they'd totally dominate if it was done fairly.

Oh and the BAFTA's last night - embarrassing. An Education and The Hurt Locker dominated. Two below average films. If that happens at the Oscars I'll be pissed. So it probably will happen.

...I don't know HOW you can say this was a bad year for animated film when it was potentially the best in the history of animation, lol. That's for another post, I suppose.

But yeah. Unless you fix that ballot to be only films you've seen, I can't count it.

It's not like me to put in things I haven't seen, I was kinda doing a combination on the things that likely should win and what I think should win. I'll put it together properly.

Oh and you're dead wrong about this being the best year ever for animation. Dead wrong. Not one film released this year will go down in animation history in my opinion. Year on year we have Ratatouille, Toy Story, Spirited Away, Persepolis etc etc.

Up was quite good, nothing special. Coraline, overrated. What elese is there? I mean it really wasn't all that. Fact.

Between Up, The Princess and the Frog, Coraline, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Ponyo, Ice Age 3, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and 9, you have eight films that are in my opinion worthy of 3 out of 4 stars or more. Never before has there been this high a quantity of this high a quality.

I like making outlandish claims and following it with "fact", it really pisses people off. Probably doesn't translate as well on message boards!

And I disagree. None of the films you mention are 5 star films. Here are some:

Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Nausicaa
Princess Mononoke
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Pinocchio
Snow White
Fantasia
Bambi
Beauty and the Beast
Jungle Book
Toy Story
Toy Story 2
Finding Nemo
The Lion King
Cinderella
The Little Mermaid
Aladdin
Ratatouille
Persepolis
Cowboy Bebop
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Belleville Rendez-Vous

Every year films of that quality come out. Often in 2's or 3's. This year I wouldn't add anything to that list (well I haven't seen Mr Fox, but it looks more fun than unbelievable).

That's the kicker. It would be that and then Shrek 2.

While not 'classic' they were all good to great animated films, all in one year. I can't think of a time that's happened...usually you get 2 at best.

This year you had a bunch of 3 star movies competing with each other. Every year you get a handful of those, usually against 1 or 2 outstanding films.

I mean let's look at them:

Ponyo - I'm the biggest Miyazaki fan out there, but this was plain disappointing
Coraline - quirky ok film
Princess and Frog -meh -> doesn't really stick in your mind as one of the reats
Up - after being lauded as Pixar's best it really fell waaaay short. Pixar top 10, not top 5.
Fox - haven't seen, but nevertheless looks more quirky than a great (presumed).

At the end of the day I will watch any of the films I listed above again and again on DVD. I don't think I even want to watch any film from this year again. From my point of view that makes it a bad year for animation.

Even if it's not Spirited Away, it still has a lot of magic.

>Coraline - quirky ok film

Definitely better than okay in my book.

>Princess and Frog -meh -> doesn't really stick in your mind as

It's easily the best since Hercules.

>Up - after being lauded as Pixar's best it really fell waaaay
>short. Pixar top 10, not top 5.

It's not hard to be Top 10, since there've only been 10. And anything above Pixar Top 7 is a 4-star classic in my book.

You got me on Pixar! I really thought there were more than that!

Anyway overall we'll just have to agree to disagree. I didn't enjoy this year for animation, you did.

I deleted some categories, I'm just struggling to think of really deserving winners. I mean I could just put up the best 5 I've seen, but I don't really feel it would be right.

Other categories feel like work to think about. Also, I didn't really think it was a great year for movies, so I just ranked the ones I enjoyed most, so take this list with a grain of salt:

1. Adventureland
2. Funny People
3. Zombieland
4. In the Loop (I really regret playing a game of Scrabble during this. Will have to watch with full attention)
5. An Education

Animated

1. Ponyo
2. UP
3. Coraline
4. 9

----
I check for: Serengeti, Zeroh, Open Mike Eagle, Jeremiah Jae, Moka Only.
