(wow. just...wow.)

I don't want to spoil it more than I already have, but you GOTTA read the explanation of this theory on the following site if for nothing other than the laugh-factor:

No lie. I had no idea there was hate for it here on PTP till the last week or so. To me it's the best horror film ever made (although the title should go to a Hitchcock - I just have a special affinity to The Shining).

I think a lot of ppl who read the book hated the movie b/c Kubrick basically got rid of everything that happens and made a movie that was very slow but was "ominous". I mean even Stephen King hated the movie, b/c he felt the main focus of the story should've been the disintegration of the family. It's a pretty praised film but not everyone loves everything Kubrick does, especially ppl who don't hugg his nuts.

They lost before they got out the gate, 'cause the movie isn't the book. It's the movie. It should be judged independently of the book, not by how closely it follows the book.

Some movies follow very closely to good books and are terrible movies. Other movies diverge greatly from the good books and are excellent. What makes a movie good has nothing to do with how closely it mirrors a book it's based on.

I don't think anyone expects the movie to BE the book. But if you're going to make a movie based on a book and a rather popular/well-read one at that.

Perhaps it should actually be based on that book. The setting and the family are the same, beyond that - Kubrick's movie has little to nothing to in common with the King's book.

And it's a disservice because the book was pretty damned good.

who cares if its a well-read and popular book. The director's job is to make the best film possible; if he feels that straying from the source material will create a better film, then he should. If the movie sucked nobody would say "well, at least it was just like the book". He has no obligation to not change shit.

it's in the director's best interest to stick to the script as much as possible. Now if the script sucks, maybe you shouldn't do that film.

If you feel a few tweaks could really kick ass - I'm cool w/that.

But if you're going to throw the script out the window then don't front like it's the same movie.

The truth is ppl came to see that movie based on the source material - give them a clue that they are going to be disappointed. KYA

I will not post any links, but just look up other theories about Kubrick, especially about his death and his last movie. This is really not that far fetched, especially how cryptic Kubrick could be.
