About Schmidt
Something's Gotta Give
The Pledge

As for recent De Niro, while Jack Byrnes may not be a standout role, De Niro is fully committed and doesn't phone it in, IMHO.

Jack and it's not really that close. DeNiro is good but does not possess the range that Jack has.

Haven't watched enough Jack to really say who's better though. I think De Niro has a better filmography though.

in the last 20 years, obviously Jack is the right choice. but in the 60's-mid 80's i honestly cannot conclude one over the other.

I think both are wonderful actors.

But honestly, I can only think of a few movies with Jack Nicholson where I think of him in terms of his character, and not "It's Jack Nicholson playing 'himself' which is okay since he's great at it."

DeNiro? I could think of a dozen movies where his character was so rich and developed that it stands on its own.

Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
The Godfather
Goodfellas

Those are just the big ones, and he's so distinct in all of them.

With few exceptions, I can't say the same for Nicholson.

I think the true measure of a great performance is acknowledging the character more than the actor (ex: Walter Sobchak as opposed to John Goodman in Big Lebowski). Deniro loses himself in a role, but Jack is always a variation on Jack.

I see nothing but the character in Nicholson's performances in The King of Marvin Gardens, Ironweed, Reds, and The Passenger. Those roles are very distinct from the typical Jack stuff, IMHO.

It also seems that with my other replies in this post that I'm choosing Jack. I'm not, I'm undecided.

Those are mostly...well, not Nicholson's lesser movies, but not the 'big' ones.

I was thinking of the Passenger when this thread came up. But that was such an understated performance...you know, it felt very minimalist. There wasn't a ton for him to really do. So I liked that movie, liked him in it, but I mean, I don't remember his name in it, or anything particular about his character.

As in...what kind of roles would they be filling?

If it's a psychopath, I'm taking Jack.

If it's comedy, I'm taking Jack.

If it's being a hard nosed badass motherfucker, I'm taking Robert.

I initially set parameters, but I felt that some might answer the question using their own criteria / parameters anyway. Something I don't really mind because I thought it would be interesting to see people's thought processes. Most importantly, I think my parameters were hard to expound. Acting is the element of film that I find the most difficult to talk about.
