...and i get the Jim Carrey movie comparisons, but this honestly looks like a WAY better thought out idea...Jim Carrey comedies really center around his goofyness and improve, which wears thin quickly....
"yes, sometimes my rhymes are sexist, but you lovely bitches and hos should know i'm tryin to correct it"- hiphopopotamus
I didn't realize he was in it... as if I needed another reason to see it.
I'd have to think really hard to decide which of them is my favorite comedian right now. his "eat a bag of dicks" routine almost made me vomit the first time I saw it... in a good way

Nobody's talking about it but I'm going tonight. With reviews like this (from the Catholic News Service), I can't wait:
"The film contains pervasive blasphemy, some sexual humor and references, and a few rough and crude terms. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is O -- morally offensive. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13."

So my answer to your question would be Yes and no.
It was difficult because folks went into this film thinking Gervais is going to do a Jim Carrey turn.
IMO, he seemed to create some rules for what his character could and could not do, and then wrote the script....after seeing it there only seemed to be one scene where he cheated on his 'rules'.
He's definitely critiquing religion but he is also critiquing a world without it.
He's critiquing the rules by which we set standards....
I'm still processing it..I liked the film and I'll probably netflix it to watch again.
the bad: the whole shtick with everybody telling the truth wears thin after about five minutes, and i mean really thin. it's badly overused. everybody except for gervais is overacting terribly, even for a comedy, which makes it hard to relate to anybody. jennifer garner's character is shallow and unlikeable yet gervais's character falls in love with her for some reason. a lot of interesting but unfunny cameos.
the good: gervais puts in some really nice dramatic work here. he's got some real chops, but like somebody above said, i don't know if he's a lead. the religion stuff is hilarious. the ten commandments scene is comedy gold. i'm a christian, so obviously i don't agree with the theological premise (although some religions definitely start that way), but it was undeniably funny. gervais's little comedy tics-- the stuttering, subtle facial gestures-- are hilarious to me, but they seemed to fall flat for the crowd i saw it with.
"i smack clowns with nouns, punch herbs with verbs..."
Sitting through the last 40 minutes of this was almost as bad as getting my wisdom teeth taken out, except I cringed less then because I was all doped up. _______________________________

SPOILERS..................
What I didn't get is, just because it's a world where people tell the truth, I don't quite get why they were inherently mean with it, or why it would mean they had to verbalise EVERY thought. Not saying what you're thinking doesn't mean you're lying. Having said that, I get it was where a lot of the comedy came from so shouldn't really gripe at it.
But going back to the 'mean' thing, it was crazy that there weren't really any decent warm-hearted people which seemed weird. I liked Garner in the movie, I thought she was good, but you are kinda left wondering what Gervais fell in love with her for?!
Also I would've liked Jonah Hill's character to get some kind of resolution - the last you see of him, he's technically trying to drink himself to death.
I did really enjoy the film though!
What was up with all the awesome cameos too????? Some really great ones!
