"What is this film noir?"

I saw it on TV a little ago and I'm pretty sure it's one of the well known ones.

It was about a woman who's dating/married to a gangster (something with gambling) but she's also having an affair with the male protagonist. It has a scene in a bar, with a detective and a man with a sword in his cane.

Film Noir can be difficult to understand. Some movie snobs would say its a style, but usually when the the term is used it is referring to crime films between 1940 to 1960. They can take the form of a gangster sort of film, or a private eye and female fatale. I think crime is the element that makes it noir. The term is also french meaning "black film." I haven't read exactly why the word black is used, I just assume its because those films are black and white.
What year did color first appear in film/television?

Fritz Lang's American pictures are fairly underrated.

I wouldn't classify Fury as a noir per se, but definitely a must see.

and for whatever reason I've never really categorized Touch Of Evil as noir.
I'd say that title is more appropriate for "The Lady From Shanghai."

It's also directed by the great Anthony Mann. I won't go into it too much as I recommend you check it out, but I'll just throw out: counterfeiting. Raw Deal is probably the better film overall, but I prefer T-Men. Check it out.

As for TOE, it's considered by some to be the last noir of that period. I guess my suggestion of TOE is like your suggestion of Naked City, you'd say Lady From Shanghai rather TOE and I'd say Thieves Highway or Night and the City rather than Naked City. It gets tricky, for sure.

You shouldn't deprive yourself of the Mann-Alton goodness. I don't think there's a good transfer of the film on any R1 DVD, though.
