"Kevin Smith on 'Dicks,' weed, and being a bad filmmaker (swipe)"

nymag.com:

>Kevin Smith on A Couple of Dicks and the Collapse of Zack and Miri

For every fan of Kevin Smith's movies, there are roughly 10,000 people who think he's a hack ó something Smith is painfully, hilariously aware of. Long before Tina Fey was putting Internet commenters on blast, Smith was directly engaging with his legions of anonymous online haters. But in the wake of Zack and Miri Make a Porno, possibly the biggest disappointment of his career, Smith has moved on. In New York shooting A Couple of Dicks ó an action-comedy starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan ó and prepping for "An Evening With Kevin Smith" at Carnegie Hall on June 17, Smith spoke with Vulture about competing with Judd Apatow and why he hopes his next movie is like Road House.

A Couple of Dicks is the first movie you're directing that you didnít write. Did you feel the need to put your own stamp on the script?

Beautifully, (screenwriters) the Cullen brothers are dialogue crazy ó the whole movie is like cops who are practically married but not actually, and, I mean, that's right up my alley. It's like Dante and Randall (from Clerks) as cops. Thatís why I was attracted to it in the first place. We all feel like weíre trying to make a TNT classic ó that movie that will just air ad nauseam forever once it hits TNT. I want it to be Road House. (My movies) all get cut to shit. I could never watch them (on TV). Jersey Girl is the only one that doesn't get hit hard, but that one's tough to watch for a number of reasons. Television version or not.

How did you end up choosing this movie?

After Zack and Miri ó or after, rather, the collapse of Zack and Miri ó I was just like, I don't feel like writing anything right now. I read it and I was like, this is like Lethal Weapon with 40 percent less action, which is something I can get my head around. On 30 Rock, one of the posters in Tracy's office is for a movie called Black Cop / White Cop, so when it was announced people were just like,"It's Black Cop / White Cop!" But it's not race-specific. It's not, "Heís a white cop who plays it by the book. And he's a slaphappy black dude who's gonna teach him how to misbehave and be a real cop!" It's two guys who are longtime partners who kind of depend on the friendship.

The name was changed to A Couple of Cops for a while there, right?

It was always A Couple of Dicks. When Variety reported the story, they got it wrong. I called Warner Bros. like, "Oh man, is that it? Did you guys cave?" And they're like, "No! It's Dicks!"

Were you nervous about shooting action scenes for the first time?

The studio ó it's very cute ó they try to not say the obvious. And the obvious is, "We are piss-scared you are going to fuck this up. You have never done anything like this.Ē So every step of the way everyone's like, "It would probably be good to see some storyboards two months before you start shooting the sequences." So we sat down with Dave, my DP, and the storyboard artist, and everybody breathed a sigh of relief.

And you're still doing your "political horror film," Red State, at some point?

I'm hoping. That's about finding cash. And right now it's the worst time in the world to go finding cash. I'll just wait till the time is right and somebody ponies up, and maybe it'll get to the point where I'll just say, "Fuck it ó I'll do it." But I've been in the business long enough to know that you should never risk your own money, particularly on a fucking Kevin Smith movie.

As you mentioned, Zack and Miri didn't do as well as expected. How did you take that?

I kind of dropped out of society. I just kind of wrapped myself in a weed-infused cocoon Ö a coma, if you will. And it was great. It was really, really wonderful, man. I don't want to be one of those people who's all, "Let me tell you about legalization!" But, my God, I don't think I've ever been happier in my life. And after years and years of Ö you know, I used to literally fight with people online. I would waste days online, talking to total strangers, some of them probably children. I was a joke. And I made a movie where at the end they beat up these guys, and still Ö you'd imagine that would be therapeutic, but, no, I still kept doing it.

I really feel like I grew up in the last year, and it wouldn't have been possible if Zack and Miri hadn't done what it did. Which wasn't, like, a colossal failure, but it underperformed severely. We were all expecting double of what it did ó not even 100 million bucks, but everything was pointing to an easy 60. And after being told that by, like, everybody, and then seeing what it did, it was just so fucking disillusioning. And I know it sounds like, "Oh, rich man's problems. Oh, poor baby, you got paid a shit-ton of money to make your dopey little dream of yours come true, and now you're gonna complain that it didn't make enough money." But you know, I'm sorry, but it bugs you. It's just about, especially when you write and direct, it's about like, fuck, what you have to say isn't important to me, amusing to me, or relevant to me.

You wake up on a Saturday morning, and youíre trying to avoid the grosses, not taking any calls and shit from the studio, so the first time youíre gonna find out what the movie did the previous night is pretty much when the Internet finds out. Youíre gonna go to Box Office Mojo and look it up. The morning after it came out, I came out of the bathroom, and my wife was sitting in the chair, she had this face on, and I said, what is it? And she said, do you really want to know? And I was like, "Uh, yes." And she was like "2.2." 2.2 million for a Seth Rogen movie on a Friday night? Doing the math, thatís less than a ten million opening ó that means it opened less than Clerks 2, which did not have the guy from Knocked Up in it. We wound up doing ten million (opening weekend). But ten million dollars? I mean, Seth had just opened with Pineapple Express with like 30 million dollars a few months prior. It was depressing.

Do you have theories about what happened?

Opening on Halloween wasnít great. We never really nailed our marketing campaign Ö I mean, having "porno" in the title in some weird way hurt. And that shocked me because I was like, "I thought that was our edge, for heavenís sake." But apparently not. I mean, it was what it was. But we should have done better. Because that, to me, was like the most mainstream flick that I could write, and, you know, when it doesnít do the most mainstream business youíve ever done Ö Well thatís not true, it did. The whole way everyone was like, "this is going to be your highest grossing film", and I said, "really, you think so?" And they were fucking right, by about five hundred grand Ö nobody said that. It just beat out Dogma. That and Jay and Bob. It was kind of perfect.

And so, yeah, that was tough, but something good came out of it, and that was that I became a habitual fucking weed smoker, for a long period of time. They always tell you, "you donít get anything done." And, you know, I was more productive in six months Ö and maybe Iím giving credit to weed, but the fact of the matter is I stayed off the Internet for six months because after our opening I was like, "I canít show my face on the Internet!" Because the Internet is like high school, and having Zach and Miri open to ten million is the equivalent of wearing a really gay-ass-looking shirt on the first day of school, and everyoneís talking about it for the next few months. So rather then go back to school, I quit school for a few months.

How are you feeling about the Carnegie Hall appearance?

Iíve been on a lot of stages, but Carnegie Hall? Talented people play Carnegie Hall. And I wrote on my blog, the only true talent that I could take credit for was when I was 18 or 19 years, I was able to bend over and touch my tongue to my cock. And I thought if I could do that, people would pay money to see that ó a morbidly obese man almost breaking his back trying to relive his golden youth when he was able to touch the tip of his tongue to the tip of his cock. But I donít know who's buying tickets to Carnegie Hall. I hope itís not people who are subscribers, or patrons, and then they show up and itís a fucking fat dude up there going, ďI got a little dick and Iím untalented!Ē

Do you see a point where you could retire from directing and do all the other stuff you do full-time?

Yeah, I think so. When I started this, it was all about the fire in the belly. About not I want to make a film, it was if I donít make a film, Iím gonna fucking die. You know, Iím 22, so naturally I was a little bit more emo about it, before emo was a thing. And Iíve done it a lot and Iíve not lost my appreciation for it. That being said, I will run out of stories to tell, and some people Iím sure will tell you I ran out after Clerks. But Iíve had it going for fifteen years, and I think, Wow itís gotta end sooner or later. I used to think that the Jay and Bob movies, that was it, that was my whole life, thatís who I was. And I was right, thatís who I was, thatís what I did.

But that was one chapter. And then you get to a point where, ďIím 38 years old and I donít have anything left to say about Jay and Silent Bob.Ē And I love the bromantic comedies, but there are people who are way better at it than I am. Do I want to compete against Judd Apatow? No. And I was a guy who did that a while ago, but in a world where Iím just not feeling it anymore, do I want to compete with a guy who clearly understands how to reach an audience better than I do? It just feels like maybe itís time to try something else.

Probably because he never seemed to buy into his own hype, nobody but internet trolls want to take him down. We just take it as he either made a movie I want to see or I don't.

As someone who has been guilty of that I guess all I can say is I really don't care what Kevin Smith's movies say about him/white ppl. However since Tyler is a member of my community w/a VERY big microphone - I do care what he has to say.

Now that being said, I absolutely LOVED The Family That Preys and I hope he makes more movies like that.

So even though you can't trace a single problem in the
black community to Tyler Perry, its okay to hate on
Tyler Perry films because of this magical role they
have in the black community's downfall. This is the
case, even if his overall role is, if anything, positive:
he employs blacks, is a wonderful model for a self-made,
hard working man who took on the hollywood gods, and won.

That's called "stupidity." Not "caring what he has to
say."

Why Did I get Married was good

Meet the Browns was funny and good.

The Family that Preys was excellent

A lot of his films are actually pretty good.

They're not. What Kevin Smith does/says has no bearing or impact upon my life.

That is unfortunately not true for Tyler Perry. I don't know why y'all continue to site his business savvy as his saving grace. That is undoubtedly positive but it's effects on my life are nil. The messages he puts out about black people DO effect my life, and imo with a few exceptions they have been stereotypical at BEST.

We can disagree w/out 1 of us being stupid/wrong.

Relax.

How? How do his films negatively impact your community and
your life?

How?

How? Give me concrete reasons why and how.

And EVEN IF YOU DID PLAY YOUR GAME of "influence on the
black community," Perry's influences would be at LEAST as
much positive as it is negative -- his business model, his
employment of blacks, the example he sets for young
entrepreneurs, etc.

Cause I didn't say he was bringing black ppl down. WTF are you talking about?

Again his positive influence is limited in scope. It effects people in the business, perhaps his geographic community and that's about it. His 'artistic' (and I use the word loosely) influence is much bigger and it's negetive - I'm sorry, I don't want to see the same bs stereotypes hollywood has been perpetuating about me and mine anymore.

It does nothing for me. To me, that makes his movies bad. That's all I'm saying, he makes movies I don't want to see, and his perceived success will probably encourage more people to make more movies I don't want to see.

His business influence as of yet has absolutely no effect on my life.

It's pretty simple.

LOL.

You must not like many movies, Sparky.

>in his positive influence is limited in scope. It effects
>people in the business, perhaps his geographic community and
>that's about it.

Uh - no

Upcoming artists and filmmakers. Upcoming businessmen
who want to understand how to navigate hollywood.

He's producing 'Precious' written by a regular black
woman, so you're wrong about that. And its employing
a talented young filmmaker, Lee Daniels. So he's influencing
lots of people, actually.

He'100% self made, works hard, and is an excellent example
for young people in many crafts. I, for example, am not an
entertainer, but am inspired by him and his work.

>His 'artistic' (and I use the word loosely)
>influence is much bigger and it's negetive - I'm sorry, I
>don't want to see the same bs stereotypes hollywood has been
>perpetuating about me and mine anymore.

What stereotype is he perpetuating about you?

Because when I saw 'Why Did I get Married' I saw professional
blacks pediatricians and psychologists coming together and
discussing the difference and issues in a very mature way.

Not sure what the fuck you're talking about.

And even still, when I see 'The Browns', that is not me.
That's the goddamn Adams Family, and its hilarious.

So even when I see the silly stuff, its silly and great.

But he doesn't even make exclusively silly stuff.

In fact, his model is awesome: He uses the funny projects
to bankroll some of the more serious projects, which is
fucking awesome.

>It does nothing for me. To me, that makes his movies bad.
>That's all I'm saying, he makes movies I don't want to see,
>and his perceived success will probably encourage more people
>to make more movies I don't want to see.

Okay, that doesn't make him any different than Kevin Smith.

>His business influence as of yet has absolutely no effect on
>my life.

It has about as much an impact on your life as the "negative
stereotypes" has.

I can give you SPECIFICS as to how his employment has helped
blacks. I can give you SPECIFIC projects that he's funding.

You can't give me shit about how the 'negative stereotypes'
that he perpetuates hurts you. You're making shit up.

Succinctly put.

I've been coming to the realization lately that while I like Kevin Smith, feel he is a oft-times brilliant writer, I enjoy his "evening with" stuff (to a certain extant), and a few of his movies are unforgettably funny to me...I kinda wish he would grow the eff up.

His "evening with" stuff is great for his "outsider-turned-insider" looks at Hollywood and the free and easy way he discusses stuff average movie goers wouldn't know about. But man I find myself often thinking, "You are a 30-something father with immense writing talent...the depths of what you like to discuss is how good fat men are at cunnilingus?".

I've shit on him and his films for years because of his utter lack, or refusal, to grow as a director (Dogma could have been one of the best movies of the last 25 years if helmed by someone with half a decent eye) while absolutely loving his writing ability. However with Z&MMAP, he really surprised me. Tracking shots?!? In a KS movie? Blocking?! "Wha-happm?!?" © Mike La Fontaine. But still the film's subject and depth was juvenile at best.

So anyway...yeah, like you said, bignick, a talented guy wasting his time saying dick pussy shit

I'm part of his fanbase and I admit no such thing. He's made bad movies, definitely, but overall I'd say he's still miles ahead of TP when it comes to writing - editing...that's another story, but since I'm a plot guy, plot matters to me.

And it's YOUR opinion that TP's last handful of movies have been quality - imo only the last one was worth a damn. Everything else has been vapid.

I don't know. Put on a one man show at some small theater. Write a book. Host a TV show. More comics. Hell, become a comic. But the movie thing isn't a good match for him.

I watched Kevin Smith's movies, saw that they weren't
good, and talked about.

With TP, you:

1) Decide you don't like TP movies before they've come out,
just because you don't like him.

2) Dislike TP because of how he reflects on black
people, or because of some magical role he plays
in problems perpetuated in the black community

3) Ignore his overall positivity and hard work, which
is commendable

4) Ignore the fact that a lot of his films of late have
been serious, and good, indicating artistic growth

1-4 are completely unfounded and unfair.

My Kevin Smith hate is based on nothing more than
the shittiness of his films.

I've seen TP's movies as well. I also didn't like them, next.

Not true, I've addressed this above.

>2) Dislike TP because of how he reflects on black

>in problems perpetuated in the black community

Subject matter matters *shrug*

>3) Ignore his overall positivity and hard work, which

I don't ignore them, I just don't think he gets a pass for it, like you do. He's not making movies about himself. If he was then I might be able to overlook the poor quality because of the good message, this is not the case.

>4) Ignore the fact that a lot of his films of late have
>been serious, and good, indicating artistic growth

You and I disagree here. I'm not ignoring anything, I've seen ALL of his movies. I found all of them trite and unsatisfying with the exception of TFTPT. I do however like a fair amount of Kevin Smiths movies, which you seem to hate, so perhaps we just have different tastes. It doesn't make your opinion suspect, nor mine
>1-4 are completely unfounded and unfair.

>My Kevin Smith hate is based on nothing more than
>the shittiness of his films.

Ditto for TP

>----------------------------
>
Y'all need to stop acting like those of us who don't like his movies are declaring jihad on the man. I got nothing against him personaly, I just don't like his movies, for the most part.

To be honest, as a highly educated black man I have no problem
with the Madea films. Madea didn't cause any of the problems
in my community, at all, and anyone who suggests that needs to
provide me proof. If they can't provide me proof, they're an
idiot. Our problems run far deeper than a Tyler Perry film,
and the solutions have nothing to do with not watching Tyler
Perry. Again - anyone who suggests otherwise is an idiot.

Movies are supposed to be fun. If you don't think TP is
funny, that's fine(I do).

But all of the other stuff about social responsibility is
completely unfounded and asinine.

Not only should Tyler Perry be able to make what he wants,
he actually happens to be very socially responsible as a
person.

He is, as you (don't) know producing this film that
is getting early Oscar buzz:

Not even Kevin Smith's fans like his movies, and his films
are almost the definition of "trite." They are about nothing,
and aren't funny.

Perry is a man with a vision, who works hard, and has a
good product that is sellable and bankable. Its great.

You keep trying to bait me into anger by resorting to personal attacks, while at the same time refuting arguements that I'M NOT MAKING.

I have never once said that TP is hurting the community - I don't believe that.

For the record and for the last time. He makes movies that I don't like. His success at that is frustrating because it will cause others to make movies, that I don't like. I'm happy that he's successful, but that to me doesn't make his movies any better.

His business-man role and artist role are TWO ENTIRELY SEPERATE ENTITIES.

I applaud his business acumen, I abhor his movies (with a few exceptions) When he starts consistently making movies I like, I'll stop giving him shit.

Until then...

a)That's not what you said here:
"His 'artistic' (and I use the word loosely) influence is much bigger and it's negetive."

b)You can say the same thing for any white filmmaker that
makes bad films

>His business-man role and artist role are TWO ENTIRELY
>SEPERATE ENTITIES.

Odd how you choose to hate on one while ignoring the other
