"Coraline-- go see it, and see it in 3D."

The imagery is outstanding, the story compelling, the mood incredibly disquieting, and the 3D is its best use to date. It makes the screen deeper rather than forcing things to pop out at you, plus the stop motion animation looks so crisp in this format. I was more legitimately unsettled by this film than by any horror film of the past, I don't know, several years.

A film release in February that will actually still remain in my brain until the end of the year-- who knew those existed? Go check this out. Seriously.

I agree. The 3D glasses actually looked like glasses, not those cheap red and blue cellophane glasses. I nudged my glasses on and off throughout the movie - in some scenes it was normal 2D, but other times tyhey used #D to give the scenes added depth. The imagery was amazing. I was also impressed by the voice acting. Teri Hatcher, Keith David, and the PC guy did amazing work.

>and the 3D is its best use to date.

Best I know, outta the new 3D stuff, you've seen this and Journey To The Center of the Earth. You're being a bit hyperbolic. It's like a white teenager devouring a Coolio album, then Enter The 36 Chamber, and declaring 36 Chambers the Best Rap Album Ever Recorded. It's really good, but that's a bold-tarded statement to make.

Yup. "Bold-tarded."

I have full confidence that this is the best use of 3D in an animated film. As far as the depth and shit, I'll let you know if it wins. It very well could, with the miniatures and shit. I doubt it, though, unless they fit 80,000 (literally) moving things in the frame, stretching a quarter-mile into the distance. You can only manage that shooting real people, which is why someone should hired 3ality to shoot the Beijing opening ceremonies. As it is, the best we have is 80k screaming and jumping half-naked South Americans, which is still pretty fucking cool.

But that's all really an argument for this post, which I'd really like you to post in, since you seem to be finally excited about the format.

However, I am excited for this movie. Have been for a year.

But that's still all animated. Even only seeing Coraline's 3D trailers I know you're right as far as animation goes. Like I told Buckshot, this is something that creative freaks like Selick and Gondry could just run away with, leaving everyone in their dust.

I'll let you know how it compares in the 3D arena to the king, but the problem is that it's kinda apples and oranges. U23D has the ridiculous advantage of being something that's impossible to fully manufacture, on a scope that special effects simply can't generate. So it's really not fair, to tell you the truth.

But what you've said about Coraline plays up to what I've been hoping someone would be able to pull off for a long time now; something that the 3D trailers from a year ago only hinted at.

I'm geeked.

The Ice Age 3 trailer was laugh-out-loud funny, and Up seemed to employ the same "making it deeper instead of making shit poke out" mentality.

Up was amazing in 3D. I think Pixar is the only studio that stands any real chance at digital depth. Bolt had issues with it. I trust that Pixar gets it.

Ice Age was meh as far as the 3D after the Up trailer. The shot in Up from the skyscraper window with the way the light came through the balloons was...SON.

What we really need is a new IMAX 3D experience worth of combining the formats. Two things that, when used best, make you fall into the screen. Put em together, and it's magic, as long as the people making the film aren't dullards.

Superman.

The movie itself was not a bad movie, but my niece is 6 and I definitely think she was too young for the movie. She will probably scream the next time she sees her mother sewing a button on a sweater.

I mean, I would... but it's pretty creepy. It's like flying monkey in Wizard of Oz, boatride in Willy Wonka, that level of creepy for like the last half hour. Under 9 I'd probably pause... but it's really a special movie. It depends on your kid.

I'd say it depends on the maturity level of your kid.

My seven year old daughter thinks it's the greatest movie of all time. However, she was scared and closed her eyes a couple times. I'm gonna have to take her again for a perfect math score test.

She's had nightmares before about mummies but that phase ended a year ago. (it all started from Scooby-Doo of all things) I've found that nowadays I will let her watch alot of movies as long as I approve of the morality/message therein. (ie no Family Guy in my house) We watched Jaws together a couple weeks ago and she loved it. I'm probably alot less strict than other parents in this regard.

As long as I'm with her and available to talk about what we see....and she gets a kick out of getting scared. Much like I did when I was her age.

This movie was, with a few more complaints, amazing. The graphics were just brilliant and the voice acting was top notch. Obviously they had a great story to work with from Gaiman, but I'm interested to read the story now. I've been meaning to check out his Sandman work also.

I was really impressed with the stereoscopic 3D. It really adds a nice feeling of depth to the film without feeling corny. The scene in the kitchen where Coraline is lining up seed packets at the window while it's raining outside? Just dope.

My minor gripes are with the story. The motivation for the 'other mother' was never really explored or fleshed out. I'm curious if it was lost in translation between page and film or if Gaiman never really went there himself. You could say that for a number of the chracters. You could also make the argument it's more of a plot driven story, but there wasn't a whole lot of obvious motivation to move the plot forward either.

In any case, I'll be coping the DVD. Unless Up! or something else comes out of nowhere, this is winning the Oscar for animation next year. The 3D aspect of Up! looks exceptionally amazing (that office window shot with the balloons in the background is incredible) and the story will be cool for kids, but I don't see it having the mass appeal of Wall-E, Ratatouille, or The Incredibles.

the name rang a bell. At first I thought it was the NBA player Travis Knight, but then I saw Phil Knight's name in the credits.

Travis Knight is the son of Phil Knight (Nike). That's not the funny part.

But he's also former rapper Chilly Tee. The guy who got daddy to bankroll his "Get Off Mine" album. Produced by the Bomb Squad.

It's only on one screen in this whole fucked up town and that was 2D

I still liked it, and the people I went with liked it a lot as well, even though they were less eager to see it than I was.

But I was sad when I was looking at a scene that I just *knew* had 3D effects and I couldn't see them.

I should tell you though, even without the link, SF is 7 square miles. To talk about theatres in SF, you probably have to go within 5.

Remember you're also talking about SF. I don't have a car so I don't cross the bay to see movies. I'm sure it's completely doable. I'll go to Berkeley or Oakland for plays or live music events, but not for movies.

Edit to add: My SO checked on line and I called Fandango. Both of us got: AMC 1000 Van Ness (that's about 10 blocks from my home), Jack London Square, Oakland, and one in Emeryville or Berkeley.

Jack London Square is easily accessible by FERRY. I'm not taking a fuckin BOAT to see a movie. LOL

does everyone else's theater charge a higher rate for these 3D films?

i loved it. the dogs - LOL! they really got the essence of the dogs and cats. this is definitely a cool movie for kids. the imagination in the other world was great. the scene as coraline walked through the other garden for the first time was especially memorable.

my wife told me she's probably going to have nightmares, though.

Neil Gaiman: This Is The Last Weekend For "Coraline"

Jim here. Well it is true. Neil Gaiman updated his fans via Twitter that this is the last weekend for audiences to see CORALINE in 3D theaters in the US.

His tweet verbatim: "For the USA, this is your last chance 3D Coraline Weekend. On Friday week The Jonas Bros 3D take the 3D screens. You Have Been Warned."

Good advice. If you have not seen CORALINE yet in 3D - what are you waiting for? Time is ticking on the stop motion picture because there are only so many 3D screens to go around and we all know that Disney gets SERIOUS this time of year. Remember HANNAH MONTANA hanging on to those 3D screens last year and keeping U2 3D out in the cold?

it was like watching a work of art.

it was twisted and creepy from the first scene. towards the last 3rd of the movie, this little girl in the theater started FREAKING out. her mom kept telling her "it's only a movie, it's only a movie".
