"If Ledger's Joker deserves an Oscar, so did Tony Todd's Candyman"

i mean, since the whole fuckin world has gone mad and we wanna start giving out the highest honor for fuckin comic book villains. and don't gimme no shit about how he transcended the comic world, because that's that bullshit. it was a fuckin comic book movie and that's all it'll ever be...you know how i know that? because there's a guy wearing a fuckin suit that makes him look like a bat in it.

tony todd's performance as candyman was just as good, if not better, if we're gonna judge on transcending the material. he took that lame ass b-movie character and made him a complicated, charismatic, empathetic and unmerciful supernatural nigga.

if dude wins the oscar for this shit, they need to give james earl jones a lifetime achievement joint for voicing darth vader alone.

And that one had inferior villains and Katie Holmes, for fuck's sake. There's just something about Chris Nolan's Batman that makes people go nuts.

I love Ledger's performance too. And I'd even go so far as to say he should get an Oscar nod, since if Depp can get a nod for Captain Jack, Ledger can get a nod for Joker.

But him being named the best villain ever in polls? Him being called better than Chigurh in No Country? Shit is ridiculous.

This is why the Supporting Actor nod seems so possible IMO. Ledger played his part just as well as Depp played Capt. Jack in PotC. But saying he was colder Chigurh is uncouth. Chigurh was on a whole other level.

there was serious buzz about Ledger's performance before he died. and the movie & his performance would still be getting hyped, maybe not quite so excessively though.

I fucking hate the revisionist history behind In Utero.

The best action movies this year and arguably two of the best films so far have been comic book movies.

As for the Heat comparison, I agree because like The Dark Knight, Heat was good not great.

...the human condition on a pretty shallow, meaningless level, yet, especially with crime flicks, people treat them like they make some grand statement on life that's worth internalizing. Not saying they can't be classic movies deserving of love, but some folks take them a little too seriously, when they're usually the exact opposite of "some real shit."

The "comic book movie" genre isn't inhernetly better or worse than any other genre of film. It's all how the studio/director/actors/marketting department treats any film.

Men-in-tights stories are nowhere near the level of documentaries or serious fiction about exploring social phenomenon and personal experience.

Now, I realize one can go see a film for reasons besides those, but generally when looking at the accepted "canon" of film and judging what people, throughout history, hold up as the best "art" available, meaningfully exploring society and personal experience are generally a central component of all these things.

So, I mean ... I like comics and all, but yeah, I feel they're often held to a lower standard by their adherents.

Plenty of shitty documentaries and serious fiction movies have been made, just as there have been plenty of shitty superhero films. There have been lots of shitty films that examine society and personal experience. And there have been some that are just fine, but still aren't as good as The Dark Knight. A film like "Terms of Endearment," which won the Best Picture Oscar, isn't better than Dark Knight just because it explores the deeply personal experience and ramification of death and growing old.

>So, I mean ... I like comics and all, but yeah, I feel they're

Just because other people hold them to lower standards doesn't mean they can't be just as good another medium at exploring the human condition. Are most of them Faulkner? No, but neither are 99.9999% of other works of fiction.

In response to Reply # 25

There's all kinds of ways you can explore "social phenomenon and personal experience", and plenty of other themes through comics. Humans have been telling superhero (then called "gods") stories since the beginning of recorded history.

Read some Alan Moore

Just cause Hollywood fucks up comics movies doesn't mean it's not as "deep" an art form as documentaries and "serious fiction".
