4. "I loved the Greenwood score too, but" In response to Reply # 3
strangely enough, the best section of it was actually someone else's music. A piece called "Fratres," by the minimalist composer Arvo Pärt, was used (if I remember correctly) shortly after the "gusher" scene. (I think it was when it became clear HW had lost his hearing.)
Of course, there's nothing wrong with using someone else's music. It was fully attributed in the credits. They also used an arrangement of the Brahms Violin concerto in the scene where the well was opened. But that was clearly incidental music, and could be interpreted as a part of the action of the scene. Fratres, on the other hand, was entirely in the background, and it sounded so much like Greenwood's music that someone who hadn't heard Fratres wouldn't have noticed the difference. I guess it was probably an homage, from Greenwood to Pärt, who's probably been a strong influence. Does anyone know if Greenwood has ever been interviewed about the score? I'm curious.

Orson Welles and Igor Stravinsky (my namesake) were mutual admirers. At one point, Welles talked Stravinsky into writing a score for one of his movies (I think it would have been Ambersons, but I'm really not sure, I think it was near that timeframe).
Welles went to his producer to get permission to hire him (this was after Kane, so Welles needed permission for these sorts of things). Welles explained the situation, the producer replied "Stravinsky, yes, I think I've heard of him. How much money is he asking for?"
Welles responds "twenty thousand dollars."
The producer, shocked, replies "Twenty thousand?! For just five thousand more we could get Max Steiner!"

He did both Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Amberson with Orson as well as all the stuff he did with Hitchcock obviously. Pretty much anything he or Max Steiner did was great though.
I also have a strong personal affinity for the music in Barry Lyndon. I don't think any of it's original, though, so maybe it doesn't count. But Kubrick and his compatriots had a real talent for going out and finding music that's absolutely perfect, and I think Barry Lyndon is the best example of that (that or maybe 2001 or EWS).

I would also agree with Last of the Mohican's. From what I remember, Master and Commander was good as well but it has been a while since i saw that movie.

I really love those violins in that last scene with Jodie Foster & Christopher Plummer. I dont think I even noticed them the 1st time I saw it but ever since then its been 1 of the moments I really look forwad to in that movie. Subtle but sweet.
I was supposed to see Terrance Blanchard play at the Jazz Alley here in Seattle last summer but I missed out on it. I hope he comes back here again sometime soon.

I don't have any kind of great ear for classical compositions...I'm not sure if John Williams is considered hacky, but I love his big movie scores. The Star Wars movies, Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park especially. When I was like a kinda band geek in junior high, the two songs I loved playing were the Jurassic Park theme, and the Magnificent Seven theme...which is another one I love.
And a big co-sign on 25th Hour as well.

hell yeah!
he is so underrated as a composer. his score for planet terror was really great. and his work on sin city and once upon a time in mexico were excellent too.
he's a great example of a director working within a specific genre, and creating music that really references the history of that genre's music while still being innovative and really powerful. the fact the guy writes, shoots, directs, edits and scores his own films means he is nothing but a freak. so impressive
