"Rank your excitement about these 20 2007 summer movies."

Your choices:
Spiderman 3
28 Weeks Later
Shrek the Third
Pirates 3
Knocked Up
Hostel 2
Ocean's 13
Fantastic Four 2
Evan Almighty
Live Free or Die Hard
Sicko
Ratatouille
Transformers
Harry Potter 5
Hairspray
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
The Simpsons Movie
The Bourne Ultimatum
Rush Hour 3
Superbad

Mine are:

20. Hostel 2- Didn't see the first, don't care to see the second.

19. 28 Weeks Later- Hated the first, and while it looks cool, ain't excited to see the second.

18. The Simpsons Movie- The show's fallen hard and the trailers ain't funny. I love the characters, but ain't excited to see this.

17. Sicko- Love the subject matter, don't like the documentarian. Will probably see this despite reservations.

16. Rush Hour 3- Didn't see the second one. This trilogy just can't get me excited. Still, the trailer looked funny.

15. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry- Dumb looking Adam Sandler comedy, but this one has Kevin James, who is hilarious.

14. The Bourne Ultimatum- Never saw the first, liked the second, am kinda looking forward to the third.

13. Shrek the Third- I'm not the biggest Shrek fan, but they always provide me with some cheap laughs. I'll probably see this despite hating on the last two.

12. Hairspray- Not my favorite musical, but a hell of a cast, great source material, and movie musicals are always either really good or not at all. Should be interesting.

11. Superbad- That Apatow/Rogen team can't do much wrong in my mind right now. The trailer looks funny, and I love the cast.

10. Ocean's 13- So Ocean's 12 wasn't good, I think we all agree. This one looks a lot funnier, like a good return to the fun of the first one.

9. Evan Almighty- Despite budget and my disappointment with the first, Carell can do no wrong, and the trailer looks very funny.

8. Pirates 3- I was somewhat disappointed with the 2nd, hopefully the 3rd will tie it all together in a satisfying way.

7. Harry Potter 5- My least favorite Harry Potter book, but it's the Harry Potter movies, and the last two have been a lot of fun.

6. Fantastic Four 2- The first one was okay at best, but MAN does the trailer look great.

5. Spiderman 3- I was very excited about this. I mean, did you SEE the trailer? It was advertised as the event you didn't want to miss, and I didn't want to miss it.

4. Ratatouille- Pixar + Brad Bird = inevitable brilliance. No chance that this movie isn't great.

3. Knocked Up- I always really look forward to one comedy a summer. This is the movie that my comedy hopes rest upon. Which is good, because it looks terrific, and everyone who's seen it has raved.

2. Transformers- Fuck it, this is what the summer is about for me. The trailer and special effects look fucking awesome.

1. Live Free or Die Hard- So I'm sure this will disappoint me. I'm sure of it. But with the trailer to the 4th in one of my all-time favorite trilogies being SO cool (I mean, he uses a car to take out a helicopter! FUCKING AWESOME!), I can't help but be more excited about this than any other movie this summer. If it delivers... well, I don't want to jinx it. But I really REALLY hope it lives up to the three before it.

Those are mine. Now do yours.

The only ones I'll make any effort to see are...

28 Weeks Later
Knocked Up
The Bourne Ultimatum
Superbad

I'll probably see the Die Hard flick, since it will be a big event movie, but I don't have a good feeling about it. I like my action movies to have good old fashioned stunts with stuntmen and real cars...etc. The trailer looks like they have employed a lot of implausible CGI effects and they'll lose me with that.

I'll probably end up seeing Ocean's 13, because my wife likes the franchise, but if I can convince her to take a girlfriend...all the better.

I'll end up seeing Shrek and Ratatouille, because I have a young kid.

Everything else...eeehh. They'll be out on DVD by the winter.

1. Harry Potter 5: I like the actors and how the previous 4 stories have been adapted, plus I want to see how they handle...

2. The Bourne Ultimatum: Loved the first two movies. The makers of Casino Royale owe these guys royalties, imo.

3. Ocean's 13: Yes, I liked 12, so no, Frank, "we all" don't agree. I'm paying to see Clooney and company hang out and have a good time. No apologies for that.

4. Knocked Up: The name Apatow. Learn it, love it.

5. Superbad: See #4.

6. Live Free or Die Hard: Bruce Willis as John McClane in the summer just feels right. Though I am a little wary about the time gap between With A Vengeance and this one. Not to mention the presence of Justin Long.

7. Pirates 3: If only to "see how it all ends."

8. Ratatouille: Pixar. Summer. The End.

9. Transformers: I'm a masochist, I want to see just how bad Michael Bay can scar my childhood consumer memories. Early word on the street is that it's bad. Could be just haters talking, though.

10. Sicko: I don't need to have a cup of coffee with the guy to appreciate and dig his movies. At the very worst, it'll spark a surface-level national dialogue on health care.

11. The Simpsons Movie: I'm interested to see what story 11 writers (or was it 14?) cooked up.

12. 28 Weeks Later: Dug the first flick, taking my time to see the second. But reviews have been solid, so we'll get to it.

13. Shrek the Third: I feel obligated to see it, and that's not really a good thing. But I've already got my ticket for tomorrow.

14. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry: Eh. Might go if word-of-mouth or reviews are good. Seems like a limited premise. But at least it's original.

15. Rush Hour 3: I'm more excited by the rumored Friday 4 with Chris Tucker than by this.

16. Evan Almighty: Yay, great, it's got Steve Carell, but the premise just isn't interesting enough to me. I'm a little wary of the fact that they took a secondary character from the first movie and gave him a full story for the "sequel." Sort of like they did Jerry Reed for Smokey and the Bandit 3.

17. Hairspray: I didn't see the original film, so I don't know how interested I'm going to be in this. "Come see John Travolta in drag! And a fatsuit!" just isn't a selling point for me. Unless word-of-mouth/reviews are spectacular, I'll wait for the DVD.

Unranked, Because They Will Not Be Seen
---------------------------------------
Fantastic Four 2: Didn't see the first one, so I don't care about this one. Even with Alba and an "awesome" trailer that jacked the "let's just show 'em a scene from the movie" steez from The Devil Wears Prada.

Hostel 2: More S & M Horror? No thanks.

Unranked, Because They've Already Been Seen

I'll group them into sets:

----- Worth seeing in a theater:
1 - Spiderman 3 - Loved it! Saw it in IMAX.

2 - Harry Potter 5 - I can't wait.

3 - 28 Weeks Later - Looks awesome. First one was cool as shit.

4 - Fantastic Four 2 - The first one was better than people give it credit, and I am excited about the Surfer.

----- Unlikely in a theater, definitely on DVD though:
5 - Transformers - Geeky, but sure. Could be cool in a theater, but probably not necessary.

6 - The Bourne Ultimatum - I like this series, so I'll peep this.

7 - Shrek the Third - I actually liked the first two, but I'm skeptical... I know I'll end up seeing it eventually (on DVD) because my wife will want to.

----- Would like to see it on DVD, but no particular desire.
8 - Knocked Up - Looks funny, and I like the cast. I never see comedies in a theater (except Borat or something I KNOW I'll love).

9 - Ocean's 13 - I liked first one quite a bit, but the second seemed like an excuse to get the actors together and fuck around on set. I'm not all that interested but will probably catch it on DVD eventually.

10 - Pirates 3 - first one is great, second was a fucking mess, so I'm not too interested. Still, probably will see it eventually.

11 - Superbad - This could be kinda funny but I don't really remember the trailer very well. Might check the DVD if I hear good things.

----- Unlikely to bother watching
12 - The Simpsons Movie - I would have been crazy interested in this about 10-15 years ago, but I haven't cared about Simpsons for many years.

13 - Rush Hour 3 - It might be funny but I kinda doubt there's many jokes left here.

14 - Hostel 2 - I didn't like the first one much; it was pretty damn pointless.

15 - Evan Almighty - Trailers don't do much for me, so probably not.

16 - Ratatouille - No way in hell I'd see this.

17 - Hairspray - Is this a remake? Very fucking unlikely, unless I'm totally mistaken about what this is.

I don't have the slightest idea what these are:
- Live Free or Die Hard - Is this another Die Hard movie? If so, I'd definitely check it.
- Sicko - Sounds interesting based on the title. lol
- I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - Documentary about gay marriage?

Why not? Not a Pixar fan?

>17 - Hairspray - Is this a remake? Very fucking unlikely,

It's a movie version of the musical based on the John Waters film. It's kind of a fun musical, in the same campy John Waters fashion. Could be good.

Yes, it is the 4th Die Hard, LOL. I'm surprised you haven't seen the trailers.

>- Sicko - Sounds interesting based on the title. lol

It's the new Michael Moore documentary attacking America's health care system.

>- I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - Documentary about gay
>marriage?

Close. Movie where Adam Sandler and Kevin James pretend to be in a gay marriage.

I like Pixar a lot, actually. I don't know, it just seems like a dumb idea - a mouse chef in France? Actually, I just watched the trailer and the animation looks amazing... but the story still seems kinda stupid.

Yeah, I don't really go for musicals.

Cool. This would jump up to around # 5... maybe even worth seeing in a theater.

I like Michael Moore's stuff, so I would definitely watch this on DVD. I'd put around # 10 or so.

Interesting. I like Adam Sandler, Kevin James not so much. Maybe bump up to 11.

1. The Bourne Ultimatum: I really liked the first two and want to see him in America with his memory back.

2. Rush Hour 3: I really liked the first two and think the formula is pretty hard to screw up.

3. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry: I'm slowly becoming a believer in Kevin James and I think it could be a funny flick. Also, Biel in a bikini.

4. Knocked Up: Great reviews.

5. 28 Weeks Later: Not all that fired up but it's the only thing I want to see that's out there.

6. Ocean's 13: I didn't like 12 but the group is still cool and adding Pacino should be interesting. Also, no Julia Roberts to muck up the works.

7. Pirates 3/Spiderman 3: Both are affected by Dead Man's Chest. I'm wary of At World's End because it's supposed to be even more convoluted than the last film (and longer). Meanwhile, I've heard very few good things about Spidey 3 and don't feel like walking into another two and a half hour film with bad reviews like I did with Dead Man's Chest.

8. Transformers: Expectations are low but it's Transformers. I'm still wondering if they ever are going to promote Shia's presence in the film. I thought Disturbia's success might have gotten him at least a couple more shots in the ads at least.

9. Live Free or Die Hard: I haven't seen the first two Transporter films but the fact that they got Bruce Willis for the... oh wait, this is a Die Hard sequal? Really?

10. Superbad: Could be funny. Will probably be a rental.

11. Evan Almighty: Evan Al"meh"ty. Still, decent reviews or word from friends and I might go to see it.

12. Sicko: Should be interesting.

The rest:
- Harry Potter 5: Haven't seen the last two. Just not all that into it.
- Shrek the Third: Never a huge fan of Shrek. Didn't see the second one.
- Hostel 2: Never saw the first one
- Fantastic Four 2: First one was bland. This could be better but it's still a Netflix film.
- Ratatouille: Confession time, I've never seen a Pixar film in the theater. This certainly won't be the first.
- The Simpsons Movie: I stopped watching The Simpsons on TV years ago. Not sure why I'd be interested in a film.
- Hairspray: Not only am I not interested, I might actually be opposed to this film.

I can't imagine trying to drum up excitement for any of these.

Hairspray? That's ALREADY a movie. I am just so OVER the whole classic movie to musical stage show to new musical movie thing. The Producers was a terrible stage show and, by all reports, an even worse second movie. I'm not going to watch another classic be murdered.

And as for Michael Moore, as I have said repeatedly: I'm glad he exists and I'm even more glad that there's no reason that I personally have to watch his movies. I'm starting to wonder whether the first part is still true, though. He's so divisive that it wouldn't surprise me to learn that he drives right wingers even further into their entrenched positions. He's like a one man voting drive for the moral majority.

The Producers was really funny on stage. I laughed my ass off. :-\ It wasn't deep moving theater, but it was some classic vaudevillian spectacle. The movie was not good because they basically did the stage play for the camera, which doesn't translate AT ALL.

I also enjoyed The Full Monty and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels musicals as well. It's not an automatic recipe for failure-- you can still get great songs and performances out of adapting pre-existing material.

The trailer for the Bourne Ultimatum got me hype, especially when he says "I remember" at the end. That is the only one I want to see to be honest.

true. but something about that one makes me feel like "this movie is not for me." i think it has to do with race.

catering to a very specific audience i don't feel i'm a part of.

ABSOLUTELY HAVE NO PLANS OF SEEING
20. Spiderman 3 - Didn't see the first two. I bet Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire share mayonnaise on Saltine sandwiches.

19. Hostel 2 - Didn't see the first one and only vaguely have an idea of what it was about.

18. Fantastic Four 2 - Is Jessica Alba giving away head and ten dollar bills at theaters? If not, nope, not at all.

17. Harry Potter 5 - I just read Sorcerer's Stone a while ago: nice story, but obviously written for 2nd Graders. (For the record, I can name children's literature that isn't written at such a child's level.) (hate) But I still haven't seen the movies, and my cousins are too young to give a shit about it, so I can't imagine anyone dragging me there.

16. Shrek the Third - When the original first came out on DVD, I was told by people I trust(ed) that it was great. I fell asleep about forty minutes in, but what I remember didn't warrant any praise. (I think people suck this series off for the Dreamworks / Spielberg name.)

15. Rush Hour 3 - Isn't Jackie Chan about seventy? Hasn't Chris Tucker not worked in that many years? I'd see a new Lethal Weapon movie before Rush Hour 3, and I don't think they're making another one of those.

14. Transformers - Never gave a shit about the Transformers cartoon, toys, lunchbox, enterprise, whatever. And not the 2007 movie certainly.

13. 28 Weeks Later - Didn't see the first one. Thought about seeing the first one, but still haven't and won't for some time. Not really my genre-type.

12. Pirates 3 - The first one featured an admittedly clever performance by Johnny Depp, the best impersonation of his career (hate), but it was also about thirty minutes too long. In my mind, with its two sequels, that makes the series about 4 hours and thirty minutes too long.

11. Hairspray - Just like the Harry Potter movie will bring a particular audience to the theater I'd rather not spend two hours with, I'm gonna avoid Hairspray. I've seen the original, twice, but isn't this one supposed to have even more of a Broadway musical edge? Only on DVD, and only if it gets John Waters' approval.

^^notice: all remakes or sequels

TICKET PENDING ON REVIEWS OR CIRCUMSTANCE
10. The Simpsons Movie - Maybe eight years ago. I mean, nowadays a thirty minute episode of The Simpsons loses its way and my interest five minutes in. Nevertheless, it's still a legendary series, and maybe they decided not to get lazy given the great opportunity of a feature film.

09. Ratatouille - I got little cousins, so I might see it with them. Am I excited really? Nah.

09. Evan Almighty - Hmm . . . on one hand, I really like Steve Carrell. I even anticipated this trailer, but it looked like shit. Expensive shit, but shit nonetheless. So unless the reviews are real strong, nope.

07. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - Sandler? Yes. Kevin James? No. Jessica Alba? Definitely. It's R, so that's potentially intriguing, but most of the jokes featured in the trailer were painfully obvious.

MOST LIKELY GONNA SEE
06. Sicko - I remember the episode of Moore's The Awful Truth where he pressured Humana into covering a guy's pancreas transplant after they initially turned down the case. See, that was Michael Moore actually helping someone other than himself (though I'm sure it soothed his ego as well). So I'll probably go, but Moore is one of those dudes who I like what he's doing just not necessarily how he's doing it.

05. Live Free or Die Hard - One of my favorite series, and Bruce Willis is arguably the best action star the 80s created (who else? Kurt Russell possibly). However, I'm instantly wary whenever a series gets plugged back in after being away for so long, but there's an 80% chance I'll make it out.

04. Superbad - Apatow, right? I have only a vague idea of what it's about, but that name right now is pretty golden.

DEFINITELY WILL SEE
03. Ocean's 13 - Yup. First was decent enough, a good start, but a little by-the-books. The second one was all charm and winks, but it had more of a personality than the first. I quite liked it even. Pacino aside (hate), I'll see it.

02. The Bourne Ultimatum - Yup. "Matt Damon is the greatest actor working today." The first two were at least good, and I still watch the OG whenever it comes on TBS.

01. Knocked Up - Yup. Opening weekend. I got high hopes for Rogen and the rest of the F&G cast on board. I don't wanna gush, but Apatow is responsible for some of my favorite moments in movies and TV from the last decade or so.

I don't know. Maybe I really am crotchety at only 22, but there's at least a dozen or so movies coming out in September and on this year I'm looking forward to. I'd just rather spend my money on them.

Biel I meant.

I guess I just have Alba on my mind (I wish).

8. Spiderman 3 - Haven't seen it yet, but I know I should before it goes away. There just doesn't seem to be a compelling reason.

7. Superbad - This trailer looks hysterical. And it's Apatow and Rogen so it's gonna be brilliant.

6. Transformers - Yeah, this is gonna end up ruining my childhood. But it's a live action Transformers movie. That's fuckin ballsy. And there's Megan. And Shia.

5. Knocked Up - Katherine Heigl + Seth Rogen + Paul Rudd + Judd + great reviews = definitely see in the theatre.

4. Live Free or Die Hard - Bruce Willis AND Bartleby Gaines??!!! People who slept on Accepted, I feel bad for you. Justin Long was great in that movie. And this is Die Hard. Which means it can't suck.

3. Ocean's 13 - Yeah 12 wasn't so good. Blahblahblah. They still look like they're having more fun than Brett Favre. And the costumes look hilarious. How can you not love great costumes?

2. Ratatouille - Brad Bird + Pixar + Patton Oswalt means this will be the best movie of the summer. Have you seen the 9 minutes of released footage? It looks like the most beautiful animation ever put to celluloid... or silicon. Either way.

1. Harry Potter 5 - The 2nd best Potter book (how the hell is this the worst Frank? worse than 4 or 6? No way). And the two latest trailers look fantastic. This has opportunity to beat out Ratatouille. Who's not excited for more Ralph Fiennes as the most evil of villains?

As for the other 12 I only listed movies that I'd realistically pay money to see this summer. I might see Chuck and Larry but Jessica Biel would be the main reason. If I could find time for 28 Weeks Later I'd see it, since it looks like another excellent zombie film. And Bourne Ultimatum I'll probably catch on DVD. I have yet to see one in the theatres. It just never seemed like a pressing engagement.
