I guess I've had a reaction to the reaction. I don't get people saying that the ending of the episode was crushing. In her depression, Gretchen built up that a couple was perfect and had a better life, she ingratiated herself into their lives, but finally she realized that they didn't have the perfect life. To find her crying as crushing is to buy into her craziness. To me, the revelation was a relief that, while she might not get a positive revelation out of it, she's at least snapped out of the insane phase she was in. If anything is crushing, it's Jimmy's continued ignorance.
But in general, getting heavy with the depression rewrites the entire series for me and makes it far less enjoyable. It's actually kind of fucked up to approach it as "Hey, we can laugh at her depression when it's fucking her life and she's not completely breaking down but now it's crushing that she's really struggling with it." I feel people should look back and say, "Oh man, I shouldn't have been laughing at any of that."
And one of the draws of the episode, as people have noted here, is just how fucked up will she be. Will she steal the dog? OH SHE STOLE THE DOG! Maybe it's me but that shit shouldn't be seen as entertaining. That should be the heartbreaking part; the end is her at least somewhat coming to her senses.
I completely disagree that they had to go here because of the dark undertones. I mean, the fact is that few people saw it going here so it wasn't inevitable and Jimmy and Kether are as fucked up as Gretchen but we're still laughing at them and not delving into the depths of their psychosis. I mean, this is a show that made PTSD a running punchline and continues to do so but now that it's the suburban white girl that's depressed, let's all really take this to heart! That's extremely offputting to me.
And, again, it's not what the show is going for but I find it hard to see their relationship as anything but a symptom of her depression. ---- NBA MOCK DRAFT #1 - https://thecourierclass.com/whole-shebang/2017/5/18/2017-nba-mock-draft-1-just-lotto-and-lotta-trades
