"Matthew Vaughn out as director on Days of Future Past *swipe*"

He really must not like sequels.

http://collider.com/bryan-singer-x-men-first-class-2-sequel/206289/

Director Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class) has reportedly decided not to direct the sequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past. At this time, there is no explanation for Vaughn’s departure, but this doesn’t mark the first change of heart in the director’s history. He previously toyed with the notion of dropping out of helming 2010′s Kick-Ass before changing his mind and returning. He then opted out of directing the sequel, which is currently being directed by Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down). Fox wants to keep their July 18th, 2014 release date and will have to move on landing a new director soon, especially since the original cast, including Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, are all expected to return. Tops on their list is Bryan Singer (X-Men, X2). Hit the jump for more.

bryan_singer-x-men-first-class-sequelDeadline reports that Vaughn will step away from his directorial responsibilities on X-Men: Days of Future Past, but that Singer may step in to replace him. Vaughn, who wrote the treatment for the sequel, will remain with the project as a producer. He’ll also be attached to another Fox production, Secret Service, which was pitched by Mark Millar as a combination of My Fair Lady and James Bond.

Singer, meanwhile, has been a mainstay in the X-Men feature film franchise since writing and directing the first two films in 2000 and 2003. He also turned in the script for X-Men: First Class and held a producer credit for that film as well. Singer, who is currently a producer on the sequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past, recently spoke about the film’s plot while confirming the title and revealing that it deals with aspects of the 1980s comic book storyline. Stay tuned for more on this developing story.

Man I really hope this doesn't get fucked up in someone else's hands. First Class was the first really good X-Men film, and I don't have a lot of confidence in Singer, even though he was a producer on the last one. This does not bode well. Hopefully Vaughn changes his mind again and comes back, I have high hopes for this one.

First Class was.

X2 was good. It had the misfortune of being the follow up to the clusterfuck first film, which limited how good the sequel could be because so much shit had already been screwed up. At the same time, that also ends up being a benefit, because you could go into already knowing the flaws so it could just be enjoyed for what it is. X2 was a fun enjoyable movie, but I definitely would not call it great. FC was far better, there was way more depth and character development, and Magneto-Xavier were hella more interesting than in any previous film.

I loved X2, sometimes I would even put it over The Dark Knight, but that's the only Singer film (including X-Men and Usual Suspects... I like them, but that's it) that I really am a fan of.

Vaughn knocked it out of the park with the last movie, and I was hoping to see more of that brand this time around.

That said, I have very high hopes for this sequel, and the time travel aspect, and I fully expect them to throw in all sorts of surprises, such as returns of the original Singer movie X-Men, a hint at something Fantastic Four related, and possibly, a nod that the Marvel Cinematic Universe exists somewhere.

I finally caught the Last Stand on cable and was pissed I missed it in theaters.

He had renewed my faith in the series. I have no faith in Singer to pull off another good/great X-men film

They fucked up any sense of continuity they've had (The Wolverine takes place AFTER X-Men 3), and last time he dropped out we've gotten The Last Stand as it is.

and First Class is kinda hokey on subsequent viewings, and DoFP will require a huge tonal shift. Have we seen that kind of darkness from Vaughn?

First Class is soooooo damn inconsistent it pisses me off. Fassbender and McAvoy are on their A games but once they bring the rest of the kids in the mix it's a disaster.

I wonder if they will erase the thought all together, and not even include them. Also, how does this link in with X-Men:First Class when it involves time travel, Wolverine & Kitty Pryde?
