"MADEA AS ALEX CROSS?!?!?!?!"

Idris...what you done did? WHAT YOU DONE DID to not get this role?

alll fucka hell!

so, are they going to write a scene in the reboot where Alex goes undercover as an overweight, testy, psychotic older black woman who carries a gun in her panties and waxes poetic about the lessons that God teaches you while tracking the Kiss Me Not Killer (a lovely James Patterson reference guess which book this is from kiddies)?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Morgan Freeman was pretty much a sexless advocate for scared white girls in those 2 movies.
Perry could do that.

I think it's a solid move for Perry and Cohen is a proven director, so I'm kind of interested to see how this plays out.

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

But I feel like TP gives off something that nto everyone likes. His ability to corner so strongly a well documented demographic could REALLY work against him.

You need some serious star power for such a strong role. Alex Cross is not dramedy so I can't see Ma Dukes/Madea pulling it off convincingly enough for a wide audience to believe him as a detective.

And Tyler isn't even IN Meet the Browns-- that's just the strength of his name.

Look, I think the movie would be better with Idris. But it's a waaaaay better business move to put Tyler in this role.

I think a movie with a protagonist played by Tyler Perry would be a hit in just about any genre. If it's a Rob Cohen thriller, it might even cross him over to a white audience if it looks good enough.

"for colored girls" flopped.
"the family that preys" flopped.
"daddy's little girls" flopped.
"meet the browns" flopped.
"precious" didn't quite flop cuz it was an indie movie, but they definitely expected "black swan" numbers.

basically, his hit movies have been either madea movies or "why did i get married?"

WDIGM & WDIGM2 are ensemble movies, and you can't even remotely seriously argue that ppl saw either of those films b/c of TP, unless you're just arguing for the sake of arguing.

That's the whole point.

Dude is very successful. Dude has a huge fanbase. Dude found a studio with a vehicle that could open him up to a wider audience.

There's nothing that indicates Elba would automatically be a bigger draw than Perry. But because this is a new side of a star with a gigantic fanbase, it's worth giving him a shot in this new genre for the tremendous upside Perry brings to the table.

>That's the whole point.
no, my whole point is that playing a sassy grandmother & starring in a couple ensemble comedies doesn't point to TP being able to headline a thriller. that's my line of reasoning.

>Dude is very successful. Dude has a huge fanbase. Dude found a

it's possible, but it just doesn't seem to me that it's logical. dude fits squarely in the post about who one couldn't picture as a tough guy. i don't think it'll work, and i think you & the studio are mistaken.

ahhhh....but i never said elba would automatically be a bigger draw than TP. matter of fact, i said both their track records are thin enough that, were i to take a chance, i'd probably go with the better actor. i think having TP take on this role when he's not a good actor & has no experience in the genre is folly.

i know for a fact that my sis-in-law, who has seen everyone one of the madea movies wont go and see this movie. its not in the wheel house of movies that she likes. im willing to bet most of his fans go to see his movies more of the content thats in those movies than for tp himself. that doesn't ensure crossover. ill be glad if this is proven wrong (bc i really want this series to succeed), but i dont think it will happen.

that flock to his movies, the subject matter will turn them off immediately, he's not directing, so yeah its not going to be as big of a draw as his own films...trust me!

Idris would have been better..just sayin.

his tv shows are popular because they're 2 of the only black shows on tv & they're sitcoms. about 2 million people a week watch them -- that's hardly a huge audience upon which to hang a movie franchise.

& it's not as if ex-madea, his movies are blockbusters. "madea goes to jail" popped to $90M cuz it had been 3 years since a madea movie. otherwise, the movies do well for low-budget flicks, but outside of putting on a dress, no way has TP shown himself to be a bankable star when playing a man. & he's DEFINITELY not a sex symbol, lmao, so they can't even rely on that sort of appeal to draw people in. it pretty much depends on

between "obsessed" and "takers," elba looks about as bankable as TP. they're taking a gamble either way b/c they don't have denzel or will on board. considering that neither "kiss the girls" ($60M) or "along came a spider" ($74M) was a huge hit, they definitely could've afforded to go with, ya know, a better actor. or at least jamie foxx.

ummm HOW?

you read the books and pictured freeman, even though Cross describes himself as a "Young Ali" in his late 30s early 40s? Freeman came across as someone's older uncle at best, NOT the dude who'd be smashing monica potter, as cross did in the book.

FOH dog. i'll address tyler later, but having seen kiss the girls, then reading the book along came a spider, THEN watching the movie, it fucked it up majorly. not just cause he needs to bang all the women that throw themselves at cross, but it made along came a spider much more compelling that alex got involved with the FBI agent who was dirty. gives the whole ending more gravity.

c'mon....that's ridiculous. dude's not attractive at all & he definitely doesn't look like a "young ali"....he doesn't look young at all.

clearly i'm HIGHLY skeptical of this idea....if he & the director can pull that off, more power to them. but this seems like even more epic miscasting than morgan freeman.

i'm not saying carbon copy, but in terms of how cross is described in the book, he fits the bill a LOT closer.

skepticism is cool. and no, it won't be more epic miscasting, and this is no disrespect to morgan freeman, he played the role well. put it like this, if you never read the books and only saw the movies, there'd be absolutely no issue. but to know the character, and the physicality involved in the real character, freeman just isn't that dude. this role NEEDED to go to a younger man to do justice to the character.

Morgan Freeman's mumbles are more discernible than Mos Def's best efforts at talking.

I remember tonnes of "non-urban" people asking if there was something wrong with Mos in 16 Blocks.

The guy sounds like he's crying when he acts. I love him, but he is *not* right for this role.

Don could do it though, yeah.

other than will, tyler actually fits the look better than anyone else I can think of. he describes himself as a "young ali" in the book.

and it's not MADEA as alex cross, it's TYLER PERRY as alex cross. it's called ACTING. before we say it's all wrong, let's wait and see how it plays out.

he's DAMN sure a better person to play him than the aged sexless morgan freeman shit they trumped out there for the first two flicks. from those two movies and reading the books, you'd have sworn it was two entirely different characters.

give tyler a shot before he's shit on. man damn.

um. calling Morgan Freeman sexless compared to Tyler Perry is calling Jesse Helms racist compared to Hitler.

If anything, you WANT Tyler to play a sexless character. the worst part of his acting is when he's playing opposite romantic interests. It's very very uncomfortable. #noshots

i'm more speaking to the way in which freeman played cross in the movie. it's not that he can't go younger or whiter, shit the REAL morgan freeman gets his. but they removed the element of any chemistry whatsoever, which alters a major story arc in the book.

it remains to be seen. i believe everything we've seen him in, he's had a large amount of creative control. with the right director and people around him, could be an entirely different look.
