"Another Childhood Memory Beat Up and Left for Dead (Total Recall Remake)"

It was bad enough I heard about the "Clue" remake yesterday, now this news they're remaking "Total Recall". Tell me this, who's gonna deliver lines better than Arnold?

"See you at the paaahty Rictah!"
"Get your @$$ to Mars. Get your @$$ to Mars. Get your @$$ to Mars."
"Consider it a divorce."

Total Recall remake in the works: This is not a dream

Feb 26, 2009, 06:30 AM | by Jeff Labrecque

Categories: Movie biz

Producer Neal Moritz (I Am Legend) and Columbia are in final negotiations to remake Total Recall, Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi classic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," that smash, in which Arnold played a futuristic Average Joe who may or may not be a secret agent determined to free Mars from its draconian leaders, grossed $261 million worldwide. As Quaid, Arnold slayed Sharon Stone, flirted with three-breasted women, and tracked down a creepy freedom-fighter named Kuato. After 19 years, Moritz is hoping the advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects will help refresh the story.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein had once hoped to develop a remake (or sequel) when they still ran Miramax, but Columbia secured the rights when the Weinsteins left to start their own company.

not in any showy way, i just don't watch them. i rarely have any reason to watch remakes of movies made in my lifetime. i'm sure this will be no exception. is hollywood really low on ideas, or are all these remakes to do with the economy?

I prefer some of the older style effects, even if they are more expensive or difficult. Original Star Wars looked better to me than new Star Wars.

Can't get too excited about Biel and Farrell but it looks interesting. I actually like Len Wiseman's direction; he just needs to get some better scripts (although I like Live Free or Die Hard since I was told beforehand that it wasn't Die Hard and was more of a superhero movie.)

And this is all it takes to cut trailers now: http://inception.davepedu.com/

It worked for me. Doesn't make me want to see the movie any more or less but I'll check on the trailer (and it didn't hurt, which is usually a good sign for most of these films.)

In response to Reply # 42

Unless it is something so surefire (read: derivative) that it's a sure bet or a remake, the screenwriter is better off getting their film made independently.

"John Carter" is a sure-fire bet that was poorly, poorly marketed and produced on a budget about twice as large as it needed to be.

Hollywood isn't about creativity, and hasn't been since sometime in the mid-1920s - it's an industry designed to make $$$. Creativity is a secondary goal.

In response to Reply # 31

The idea and whole concept behind the movie was dope.

- They used some great cutting edge effects for the time. They used believeable effects, other than the bloated faces once they were exposed to martian atmoshpere, but for the most part the effects in this movie were dope.

- The action inthis flick was great.

- supporting characters were highly entertaining and added to the story, unlike most who detract from it. I mean even Benny was great with his kids to feed. You are correct taht ironside did his thing as he always does.

- If you saw this flick when it came out or somewhere close to that, you recognize that this was a really cool flick, if you saw it later and are viewing it through contemporary action film lens it may not ring true with you.

i was kinda dead to the movie when i first heard it was up for a remake, but having seen some of the footage, i'm interested enough to maybe see it.

the special effects look good especially that scene with the two people in the car, flying down towards the buildings in the city.

i'll definitely want to see the trailer now.

In response to Reply # 0

Or is it more of a Cohen Bros. True Grit situation? If this is a re-imagining of We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, I think it has a chance to be pretty good. I don't see a problem with making a movie from the same story and taking a more serious and less satirical, Verhoeven-y approach. All that said, it could still definitely suck, and probably will but still

from Philip K Dick called "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale". If they *are* re-imagining the movie based on the source material, i think that would be more satisfying to see than a straight re-make.

judging from the quality of the shots in the teaser, it seems that even if the new movie is a straight jacking of the original, it would be at least good brain candy.

So odd that they're opening this up against Bourne Legacy. There had to be a better weekend available.

The film industry is in trouble, and the big 6 (or is it 5 now?) are going to remake everything they can remake.

Anything 20 years and older - you will be seeing it again. Who's up for remakes of "Poltergeist" and "Child's Play?"

They're making a sequel (to the Bride/Seed of Chucky films) and a darker, less comedic remake.

I never really understand the complaints.

Stories get told and retold in *every* culture. It's the nature of storytelling. Somebody's gonna tell Cinderella again like they've been doing for 300 years. Somewhere, somebody's performing Macbeth again. And 50 years from now, there'll be another Terminator.

*shrug*

I love the original Total Recall too, but take the nostalgia away and that shit did not age well.

Sandler remaking Summer School (producing, possibly not starring) and, of course, Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes is getting the next crack at Halloween.

i don't know if i'm responding more to the quality of the effects (that fight scene is about the best use of that virtual cam since the Smith vs. Neo scene in the Matrix Reloaded) or the style of story reminds me of the sci-fi i grew up on, but I'm actually psyched to see this and notice the difference between the original and the remake.
