Still two of his very best songs, and two of my favorites. They were my favorites back when they dropped and remain among my like top 10 favorites today.

That dude is in there somewhere. That's how stuff like Sunday Service still happens.
But wow, what a difference. I still 'blame' the Taylor Swift thing more than folks seem to. I think that hit him in even a different place than his mom's death.

But I'd argue that his mom's death allowed for the Taylor Swift thing to happen. As brash as he was even prior to his mom dying, I don't think he'd have pulled that move if his mom was still alive, for some reason.

That was during the time that I was confident Mos Def and Common were gonna conquer the rap earth with half albums of Kanye beats and the other half of whatever goodness they'd get from Hi-Tek, Dilla, and others. I was wrong of course, but oh well.
This reminds me: I'm still slightly mad at Common for moonwalking out of Electric Circus when the initial reaction wasn't good. I still need an explanation of how D'Angelo ended up not on the single version of Ghetto Heaven from LWFC. It betrayed the lineage between LWFC and Voodoo.
I'm NOT as mad at him as I was for Maxwell seemingly losing his aura over Embrya's reception. I thought it was the jam. It was 'slower' but Matrimony is easily one of his best songs ever.

That would've been the best for everyone. Hah.

He's since come back around, thankfully. Listen to his appearance on ?uestlove Supreme, they talk about it at length and how it was ahead of its time.

I mean, gotta think D' was to blame, not Comm right ? Just based on historical precedent and all that haha.

and Be was an amazing album. But Mos's downfall was really he got lazy with the lyrics and he should have kept up with Talib and continued to make Blackstar albums. He got to a point where he couldn't carry a full song, while Talib couldn't carry a full album. They needed each other.
America has imported more warlord theocracy from Afghanistan than it has exported democracy.
