"2019 Winter Jazz Fest NYC Hargrove Tribute Chris Dave, Bilal, Gary Bartz..."

https://www.winterjazzfest.com/

Although the real-deal two-day weekend event isn't until next week, the fest officially starts tomorrow with a "Half Marathon" and a series of free "Jazz Talks." This year's artist-in-residence is Meshell Ndegeocello. Some of the festival's highlights include the Roy Hargrove Celebration at the Lincoln Center.
And organizers recently announced a DJ set with Gilles Peterson and Mark de Clive-Lowe on January 10.

I'll be there as I'll be in town for my birthday weekend trip. I bought a full pass for Day 2. I am so blown by the schedule conflicts, tho. As a result, I will likely miss Mark de Clive-Lowe, Butcher Brown, Kandace Springs and some others I want to check out.

Once I enter the Bowery 'round 7 p.m., I ain't leaving. I'm looking forward to seeing what special surprise guest Chris Dave will bring out for his set. It doesn't start until 1 a.m. (!!!!)

the festival. I've never been before - are the venues relatively easy to travel between?

Re: travel

I think so, at least in the sense that you won’t have to travel from Harlem to the West Village. I think all of venues are all in Lower Manhattan, near or in the Villages, below 14th Street but north of Wall Street.

It’s way too late for me, unfortunately. Esp since the set I’d be most excited for is night 2; Poyser, Hargrove tribute, and Chris Dave n’em.

So sad

I live in Newark NJ and I’m a 24 yr old woman. My mom won’t allow this lmao

I'm sorry.

I know it must suck to be in close proximity and you can't even go. The good news is that you live in the Tri-State area and most of these artists stay performing in the area. After all, NYC is the jazz hub of the world.

I used to live in the area, and now I'm in the Midwest. FOMO is real.

Oops. I forgot to post about this. Overall, the Bowery Ballroom performances on Saturday, January 12 were great.

I walked in just as Georgia was starting her set with Justin Brown NYEUSI. She said it was the first time she had performed the songs live, and it was amazing.

Naturally, Bilal, James Poyser, Chris Dave and the Drumhedz with Thundercat all performed well. Renee Neufville popped up for the Roy Hargrove tribute and sounded divine live. She really ought to release a solo album. It kills me that she doesn't have more material out there.

I forgot the name of the Black male vocalist that appeared to be filling in for vocalist Chris Turner for Chris Dave's set but he sounded amazing.

Now, I will say that Chris Dave's set seemed to drag on toward the end, and low-key, I'm slightly disappointed because I thought Mos Def/Yasiin Bey or some other OKP-favorite would make a surprise appearance. Of course, Bilal popped into the Drumhedz set because that's just what Bilal does. He never disappoints. Thundercat performed "Them Changes." I wish he had an opportunity to perform more of his own work during his appearance, which was a "surprise" announced by festival organizers the morning of the show.

I missed Mark de Clive-Lowe's performance, which was to promote his new album, Heritage. I refused to leave the Bowery Ballroom after finally landing a decent standing spot upstairs. I'm going to have to catch one of his shows sometime this year. He's based in LA and I haven't been to Cali in six years!

I forgot: I think drummer Nate Smith played with Poyser and/or during the Hargrove set. It was my time seeing him play, along with Marcus Strickland. Good set!

This Winter Jazz Fest appetizer joint featuring Nate Smith and Van Hunt is popping off in under two weeks on December 13. NYC/Tri-State people get all the good shit, I swear:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/an-evening-with-nate-smith-feat-kinfolk-van-hunt-very-special-guests-tickets-80967017529

I should note that this year's fest includes a Brooklyn marathon the weekend following the standard January 10-12 weekend, which appears to be new? The lineup: https://www.winterjazzfest.com/brooklyn-marathon

If I haven't moved back to NYC back then, I'll be at the regular marathon event.

Man - that lineup looks amazing. That's my b-day weekend, too - super tempting for an NYC trip... but would be tight in terms of work!!!

But is it just me or is the website super confusing? Hard to tell who is playing when and where.
