The time between albums has been getting long the last couple times though.
These Thought solos are a great idea.
It makes the wait for the next Roots album feel not as long. If I got some new Thought to listen to and I know the Roots album is coming, I can wait. I was just wondering if it was still in the works because I hadn’t heard anything in awhile, I wasn’t trying to stir any shit up.

Did I miss Salaam Remi’s killer output the last 4 years? How’d this album turn out? So I don’t think lack of recent output would make Just a bad choice.
If I had to make an educated guess... I’d go with Alchemist. Black’s been working with Roc lately. Roc works with Al a lot. Al has Bread EP coming out this week with a song featuring Roc & Black.

He’s in that upper tier of stringing words together that rhyme. Like he’s got a section where he rhymes vehicle, some other words that rhyme with vehicle and then at some point King Leopold.
That upper tier includes guys like Royce, Lupe, Pharoahe still.
But for this question, I only want to talk Lupe and Thought. Lupe might be the very best at stringing words together.
I find Thought to be more enjoyable though at this particular skill, what say y’all? It might have to do with his diction? Which is another skill all together, so maybe I’m talking myself out of the convo before I even get started lol.

I'd def agree with Royce, Pharoahe, and Lupe as part of this elite group but as polarizing as he is you have to include Eminem, even begrudgingly. Even if his music sucks the last 8 years or longer, he strings words together as well as any of them.
Thought would def be most enjoyable of that group. But IMO Royce ain't far behind anymore. He's actually been steadily IMPROVING his MCing skills literally since 2008 which is kind of unheard of outside of Thought.
But now that I'm thinking of it more, I LOOOOOOOOOOVE me some Pharoahe Monch. Like I legit smile everytime I hear him start rapping. I think his career has been largely hit or miss but even if the overall end product isn't 100% my cup of tea the dude still flows as well as anyone, puts words together with the best of them, and is just a damn pleasant dude to listen to on the mic. I think it's his voice that elicits positive feelings from me. He's just got one of those happy voices.

...dont get me wrong, the new one is super dope, and i know Salaam Remi beats are more polished and may sound better sonically (he's one of my favorite producers all time) ..but 9ths beats are just better to me ..that being said, combine vol 1 & 2 together and you have an album of the year contender (won't beat Ace & MP though)
everything on vol 2 is as good as vol 1 and some songs are a lot better. theres like two sides to vol 2. one side is just thought going off, the second half is more "complete" songs.

* Someone in here mentioned that one aspect to SOT:1 they didn't like was that the production ran together. I didn't think that about 9th's beats, but that's how I feel about this album. There are a couple of beats which stand out as far as tone and rhythm and drums. But the first three songs seem like one long song.
* This isn't a mark against the album or Salaam specifically but hearing the live instrumentation made me really appreciate ?uest and The Roots. Mostly because of the subject of the above point.
Throughout the The Roots' 5011 albums, very few songs share similar musical motifs, which seems easier for a producer using a sampler.
Then again, I think I'm just not as into live instrumentation or as accustomed to it like I was in the mid 90's when I fell in love with The Roots. I wasn't blown away by the instrumentation like I seem to constantly be with The Roots album.
But again, the dissatisfaction I feel with this album is more about my misaligned expectations with the final product.
* I know some folks in here have mentioned the improved engineering of this album, and I admit to being out of touch with modern developments in that field since I don't listen to alot of newer hip hop, but Thoughts vocals seem too low. They sit right in the middle of the instrumentation. Which isn't necessarily bad but I'm working a lot harder to make out his words and delivery than I did with SOT:1.

Both are damn good but IMO Vol 2 is appreciably better, mostly due to the production. I just think Salaam's sound fit Thought better overall. Also I don't dislike any tracks on Vol. 2, while on Vol. 1 I don't really love "Making a Murderer" for some reason.
But my favorite track from either album is "9th vs. Thought," with "Conception" a close 2nd. Though I'll concede that "Conception" is probably the *better* song.
And Thought is a fucking beast, as if I needed to say it. The dude is just an absolute joy to listen to. I'm constantly blown away.
Right now my favorite line is "disaster level 9/11 meets 11/9" because damn, that's creative and factual. Haha. My apologies if I missed a popular meme after the election or something but that's the first time I heard that.
