"Black Thought "Streams of Thought 2""

9 songs, all produced by Salaam Remi, according to Thought's IG and Twitter. No word on exact release, but it has to be soon, as he's been posting more and more about it.

I thought 9th vs. Thought and Thank You were beats I would’ve liked regardless of who was rapping on them.

The others weren’t all that memorable, but they were serviceable platforms for Thought - which with an MC that great, that’s sometimes all you need.

Haven’t heard anything in a couple years, it feels like. Salaam and 9th were supposed to be involved with production on that album. And now we’re getting Black Thought solos produced by 9th and Salaam.

Looking forward to this new Thought dropping though.

The time between albums has been getting long the last couple times though.

These Thought solos are a great idea.

It makes the wait for the next Roots album feel not as long. If I got some new Thought to listen to and I know the Roots album is coming, I can wait. I was just wondering if it was still in the works because I hadn’t heard anything in awhile, I wasn’t trying to stir any shit up.

Project is dope!!

Salaam DEF ingrained a 70s/Blacksploitation esque sound thru the album.

Just finished it and I love “Conception” the best after a full first listen. I didn’t hear it when it first came out; I’ve been waiting on full releases lately.

Sounds like the band, no? Plus Salam was allegedly producing 'Endgame.'

Gave it a listen, the beats are fire and we all know what to expect from Thought. Feels like this will get more burn than the previous installment.

Still anticipating a Roots album with more fully-formed songs, though. But these releases are dope.

If I started naming producers I’d be hyped to hear
work with thought, I would not name Just Blaze.

Definitely not in the first 25-30

And homeboy named him like it was an obvious
suggestion. Like it was 06 or some shit

No snark intended, I just wanted to know if I had
missed some work of his lately.

Because I still get excited for new Just Blaze production.

Did I miss Salaam Remi’s killer output the last 4 years?
How’d this album turn out?
So I don’t think lack of recent output would make Just a bad choice.

If I had to make an educated guess...
I’d go with Alchemist.
Black’s been working with Roc lately. Roc works with Al a lot.
Al has Bread EP coming out this week with a song featuring Roc & Black.

15 said “wait till y’all hear about the next one!”

That just doesn’t = Just Blaze to me.

15 hyping it like it will be big, leads me to think of
guys like Pete, Alc, Madlib, Premo, etc.

I just don’t think most people would think “I bet
he’s referring to Jusr Blaze” in 2018.

No snark to you or even Just. I was just surprised
to see someone guess him.

** edit

I had to look it up. According to Wiki he’s done 4
songs since Exhibit C. 1 track each for Beyoncé,
Rick Ross, Saigon, and Eminem.

4 tracks in 9 years.

Now I’m curious what dudes been up to.

Conway and WSG have been working with Pete on last couple projects.
Roc works with them. Black and Roc been working together.

Pete has 2 of the hardest beats on Benoit.
Contrast sounds beautiful between tone of WSG’s voice
and the dark production.

Then turned around and gave Conway who’s got a deep voice
some vibrant, colorful shit on Everybody is FOOD.

Conway is dropping hints that he’s got a full project
on the way with Pete, hype for that!

Conway needs an executive producer to help him
make the really great album he hasn’t made yet, imo.

I'd love to hear Black Thought over an EP of Statik Selektah beats. That Bird's Eye View verse Black Thought spit years ago still hits so hard.

So. Hard.

They seem to have genuinely stellar chemistry together.

He’s in that upper tier of stringing words together that rhyme.
Like he’s got a section where he rhymes vehicle, some other words
that rhyme with vehicle and then at some point King Leopold.

That upper tier includes guys like Royce, Lupe, Pharoahe still.

But for this question, I only want to talk Lupe and Thought.
Lupe might be the very best at stringing words together.

I find Thought to be more enjoyable though at this particular skill, what say y’all?
It might have to do with his diction? Which is another skill all together, so maybe
I’m talking myself out of the convo before I even get started lol.

I'd def agree with Royce, Pharoahe, and Lupe as part of this elite group but as polarizing as he is you have to include Eminem, even begrudgingly. Even if his music sucks the last 8 years or longer, he strings words together as well as any of them.

Thought would def be most enjoyable of that group. But IMO Royce ain't far behind anymore. He's actually been steadily IMPROVING his MCing skills literally since 2008 which is kind of unheard of outside of Thought.

But now that I'm thinking of it more, I LOOOOOOOOOOVE me some Pharoahe Monch. Like I legit smile everytime I hear him start rapping. I think his career has been largely hit or miss but even if the overall end product isn't 100% my cup of tea the dude still flows as well as anyone, puts words together with the best of them, and is just a damn pleasant dude to listen to on the mic. I think it's his voice that elicits positive feelings from me. He's just got one of those happy voices.

...dont get me wrong, the new one is super dope, and i know Salaam Remi beats are more polished and may sound better sonically (he's one of my favorite producers all time) ..but 9ths beats are just better to me ..that being said, combine vol 1 & 2 together and you have an album of the year contender (won't beat Ace & MP though)

i like vol 1 more than i remember. it is great.

everything on vol 2 is as good as vol 1 and some songs are a lot better. theres like two sides to vol 2. one side is just thought going off, the second half is more "complete" songs.

vol 2 is beautiful. i dont know how he tops this.

But I think I liked the first one so much that I assumed that Vol. 2 would be Thought flowing over harder, edgier beats.

The production is good on Salaam's album. Like others have said, the technical aspects on Vol. 2 are probably better than the first.

But I'm having a hard time figuring out if the songs don't hit or if my expectations for a harder album are clouding my experience.

I might have to just shelve this album for some time until my initial misinterpretation of the album fades.

124. "I'm still randomly putting SOT:2 on and a couple of things stood out"
In response to Reply # 88

* Someone in here mentioned that one aspect to SOT:1 they didn't like was that the production ran together. I didn't think that about 9th's beats, but that's how I feel about this album. There are a couple of beats which stand out as far as tone and rhythm and drums. But the first three songs seem like one long song.

* This isn't a mark against the album or Salaam specifically but hearing the live instrumentation made me really appreciate ?uest and The Roots. Mostly because of the subject of the above point.

Throughout the The Roots' 5011 albums, very few songs share similar musical motifs, which seems easier for a producer using a sampler.

Then again, I think I'm just not as into live instrumentation or as accustomed to it like I was in the mid 90's when I fell in love with The Roots. I wasn't blown away by the instrumentation like I seem to constantly be with The Roots album.

But again, the dissatisfaction I feel with this album is more about my misaligned expectations with the final product.

* I know some folks in here have mentioned the improved engineering of this album, and I admit to being out of touch with modern developments in that field since I don't listen to alot of newer hip hop, but Thoughts vocals seem too low. They sit right in the middle of the instrumentation. Which isn't necessarily bad but I'm working a lot harder to make out his words and delivery than I did with SOT:1.

...but the only track that gives me that "epic" sound is "Conception" which is amazing ...the rest of the album is dope, but kinda all blends in together to me

Agree 100%. Off first listen I liked it well enough but I wasn’t sure how many times I would play this. Now I can’t stop playing it.

94. "Listened to both Volumes a few times today."
In response to Reply # 0

Both are damn good but IMO Vol 2 is appreciably better, mostly due to the production. I just think Salaam's sound fit Thought better overall. Also I don't dislike any tracks on Vol. 2, while on Vol. 1 I don't really love "Making a Murderer" for some reason.

But my favorite track from either album is "9th vs. Thought," with "Conception" a close 2nd. Though I'll concede that "Conception" is probably the *better* song.

And Thought is a fucking beast, as if I needed to say it. The dude is just an absolute joy to listen to. I'm constantly blown away.

Right now my favorite line is "disaster level 9/11 meets 11/9" because damn, that's creative and factual. Haha. My apologies if I missed a popular meme after the election or something but that's the first time I heard that.

Conception is the better song but he is just going off so hard on 9th v Thought that I can't stop listening to it.

And I didn’t like “Long Liveth” on the first few listens. It’s still not my fav, but I wouldn’t get mad if I can’t get to the skip button on time

Lupe is playing on another level.

But as I said...Thought isn’t trying to release an in depth intricate album like Lupe so the comparison isn’t fair.

Not sure why y’all trying to make these joints something they’re not.

easy argument for best release this year. i don't know off hand if it would be my #1, but definitely in the top 3, and i have no problem with someone saying best release.

Thought doesn’t seem to be approaching these like full albums.

They are clearly mixtape EP type joints and that’s why I’m not comparing it so something like Drogas Wave. It’s jutst not on that level.

And that’s not to say Thought isn’t on that level, he just doesn’t try to be going that route on these SoT joints.
