"Anyone think Ol' Dirty Bastard sucked?"

I get that people liked his character but I think he sucked on the mic. I can't listen to him.

I can understand why people don't like him, he's a pretty unorthodox MC and at times he can go kinda overboard with the outrageous content.

Ol Dirty is as good as the Producer he's working with, Rza & The Neptunes knew how to assemble his vocals in a way that mostly WORKED

I think his performance on Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version is incredible. He's funny. He can rap on time - and be way out of time and make it work.

I disliked Nigga Please and A Son Unique.

He's great on the first Wu record too, and then has a bunch of great (and some pretty bad) guest appearances.

He was no Nas but he was a good rapper. He knew how
to climb into a song. Knew his limits.

His Mariah shit is an all-time great rapper on a
R&B song...and he managed to still sound authentic
ODB. That takes TALENT.

I've never heard ODB over-step his boundaries.

Nas might be my GOAT and there's plenty of Nas songs
that I'm like "ehhhh"

Now, part of that is RZA being a wizard producer and
feeding him shit he was right for. But that's also
talent.

if we're saying that pronunciation, coherence, elocution, all the other fancy synonyms I can kick, are key to technical skill then the argument would be in your favor

buuuuuuut

as stated above, he could rap his off and his style was so good he could rap however he wanted and imo still sound good from dusty WU to bouncy Neptunes

I dig ODB, but if somebody is judging him on Rakim/Black Thought scale then I can see why they wouldn't.

shame on you lol

subpar lyricist is a given. You don't go to Dirty to hear bars...

You go for concepts and angles. His style was inimitable...there will NEVER be another Ol' Dirty Bastard....

Return to the 36 is my FAVORITE Wu-Tang album....not the best...but as far as replay value and cracking up every time....that album is ridiculous.

Dirty's sole contribution to WU-TANG FOREVER is arguably a top 3 song on that double LP

those stupid ass noises and stuff instead of just giving us bars. He had a way of using words in garbled patterns that made sense once he finished the lines themselves.

the edited one with the augmented verses is way better. The cursing is distracting and actually takes away from his performance.

Edited versions usually suck, because they're just missing words, but Dirty was so ill and full of style that he made edited versions that were equally fun to listen to as the unedited version. I just can't heap enough appreciation on the guy in that regard.

if he wasn't who portrayed himself to be. He wasn't just SAYING a bunch of outlandish things, he had an outlandish lifestyle.
I remember when Dirty came to my hood (Spanish Harlem), hopped on the mic, and spoke to the people at the Saturday PR Parade festivities in 1994.
He gave us that 1st verse off of Rawhide, and that was what the people in my neighborhood needed to hear at the time.
