"Black Thought/Phonte/Rhymefest supergroup?"
Thu Sep-06-18 08:47 PM by DJR

Article on the OKP homepage.

Phonte posted the headline on IG with the comment “soon”.

Day 1 autocop when it comes out.

Black Thought, Phonte, & Rhymefest are Coming Together to Form a Supergroup

Three of the most talented rappers ever are coming together

Earlier this year, Black Thought released Streams of Thought Vol. 1, a collabo EP with famed producer 9th Wonder.

Does one of the GOATs have another side project up his sleeve? It seems like he does.

HEAR: Listen to Black Thought & 9th Wonder’s Streams Of Thought Vol. 1

Producer S1 sat down with HipHopDX. During the interview, he revealed that Black Thought, Phonte, and Rhymefest are all coming together to make a supergroup.

Furthermore, they are working on a project where S1 will be the executive producer.

S1 said:

We’ve been knocking out songs for that …I’m excited about that. Really dope stuff. What else? I got a lot going on. I would say those are the two as far as just overseeing. Those are probably the two main projects that I’m super excited about, minus just working sporadically with a bunch of different other artists

S1 goes on to say:

We’re just making great music. We’re not trying to cater to anybody specifically It’s just bring dope beats, dope rhymes, dope concepts, and then we’re putting it together.

After HipHopDX published its article, Phonte IG’d a photo of the story, with the caption “soon.”

Now, all we need is a name.

They must’ve been working on a song for maybe another volume
of Black’s new series and stumbled upon a great deal of chemistry
between the 3 of them.

I read Phonte and BT are forming group, I don’t blink.
Makes total sense to me.
Throw in Thymefest and I say - wow, haven’t heard that name in a long while.

check it out.
It's basically an album by the Trinity (Rhymefest, a rapper I believe is Jeff's son, and some other rapper) with Jeff on production.
Very good stuff

I respect/love a lot of the writing Fest did for Kanye. I respect him as a hip hop personality and his contributions.

Something about him as an artist has never quite clicked for me. Maybe in this setting with those other two though?

Just seems to be a mismatch despite how much I, like you, respect the man for his contributions through the years.

I liked Tipping Point way more than most, largely because Thought was killing it.

2010 was the last time he rapped enough on a Roots album IMO. That one had a lot of guests(mostly dope ones so it was cool), but still Thought was the lead emcee.

Less so on the next album, though still a rap album I guess.

Last album wasn’t even a rap album. And that was over 4 years ago.

on the beats. 9th was the wrong person to do that album and I have a strange feeling the new Smif N Wessun album is about to be the same deal.

Beats weren’t particularly memorable or terrible.

They were fine as a utilitarian platform for Thought to rip over.

I thought Thank You was fire though, beats and rhymes wise.

of course I'm exaggerating. Thought needed a production team more well suited to his talents, someone that could give him an interesting setting to do what he does, but not take it too far so that the music veers into a less grounded sound.
