My parent's didn't play her music often and I never thought to seek out her work for whatever reason. So, I don't have the innate fondness for her work although I can appreciate her genius and master of her craft.
It was only in the last year really that I became aware of the depth of her impact on her music as an instrumentalist and arranger. And also the music culture as a whole as she played a part in merging gospel and soul in a new way, to the best of my knowledge.
It's hard to develop a unique style in music, and even more so to have a style that is so true to the individual and so brilliant that no one can duplicate it. Her music was that and we, as fans of music, are better for it.
I'm pretty much in that same boat. I was always conscience of her place in music, but besides a few singles in my iTunes, never really dove in. Sad, that with a legends passing, we as music fans are naturally prone to do that. Listening on Sirrus XM last night, I heard some joints that damn near brought a tear to my eye, they were so beautiful.
I feel very depressed by her passing. She has been a part of my life since before I could remember. My mom played many records by her as I was growing up. The past year and a half it's been hard to play my own records since I've lost my mom back in 2016. Almost feels like I'm going through that time again, specially seeing a picture of her from the Elton John show last year. That was so hard to look at as it reminded me of the last months of my Mothers life.
