"Just listened to Lenny Kravitz Circus and it sounds like his best album ..."
Mama Said was always the Lenny Kravitz album in rotation. This one should be his critically acclaimed album. How Was Can't Get You Off My Mind not a smash? I'm at the gym right now and I stopped everything and just listened it from front to back.

bigger.
But it was pretty big.
I think on Lenny's VH1's "Behind the Music" the Rolling Stone critic Anthony DeCurtis said "Circus" was almost Lenny making an album that could be considered up to his influences' stature (something like that).
I think a lot of people didn't like that "Rock n roll is dead" song.

associated in with Cobain (killed himself in 1994).
I don't think the attitude of saying a form of music that your performing at the moment "is dead" and the whole Cobain inference makes an "enjoyable" feeling. I didn't want to be reminded of Cobain in that way.
Can you imagine an enjoyable disco song that proclaimed "disco is dead"?

itch.
By the time Lenny got to that album the fame pot/personal pot was boiling over like crazy. All I heard on that album was restlessness, and the realization that, "it's not as dope as I expected".
1995 was just a weird time in music to me.
The pop music waves at that time were transitioning HARD from dark grunge-y schitt from problematic addicts to squeaky fucking clean just add water boinky teen pop. Lenny bore the double cross of "sex symbol" and "critical curiousity", that schitt HAD to be confusing after BLOWING ALL THE WAY UP...and your Mama died?
I try and go back to this album...but it just makes me want to listen to Soundgarden (i.e., Rock Done Right in '95)
