"Why was Warren G never on Dre and Snoop albums?"

Seems like he wasn’t asked to handle any production or do guest spots.

Is there a reason?

Seems strange when he was originally in a group with Snoop and Nate.

Did he DJ on tour?

The actual Combat Jack show or the Mogul series on Chris Lighty that Combat did before he passed.

The Mogul episode has a dope outtake of the interview where he got snippy with the interviewer because he wanted WG to be more descriptive with the memory.

So he was relegated to a (hilarious/classic) phone call on Deeez Nuuuts on The Chronic, and a brief guest spot on It Ain't No Fun on Doggystyle.

Plus by all accounts he and Daz contributed samples as well as various tweaks to Dre's production, so they were all collaborating even if he wasn't in the liner notes much.

There’s quite a few good interviews from him in recent years out there where he’s talked about being hurt by being left out quite a bit in those years.

I know he said he felt left out when he was the only one that didn’t get a Death Row jacket. There was also a story about a plane ticket where they were going out on tour and Warren was the only one they didn’t leave a ticket for.

Seems like Suge didn’t take him seriously until he was on Def Jam.

Warren talked about how he got a call from 2Pac for some beats after Pac heard “Indo Smoke”, at a time when Warren was broke(so broke he showed up with taped up glasses!) and struggling to make his name. So he went and met up with Pac and after having a conversation, Pac put a lot of the things Warren was telling him he was going through into the “Defintion of a Thug” song.

Why was he the only one that didn’t get on Death Row?

He had potentially one of the biggest songs out of everyone with Nate Dogg.

What’s not to be taken serious? Unless he wasn’t taken serious and then he did his own thing and blew up with that song after Suge tried to leave him out.

I just broke that G Funk Era album out after playing Twinz for weeks and I forgot how much I liked that shit too.

Yea G Funk Era is dope as fuck. Somehow underrated even though it did major numbers at the time. So many forgotten gems on that shit. Do U See, Recognize, Super Soul Sis (!!!!), This is the Shack, Runnin' Wit No Brakes .... album was basically flawless even tho WG can't rap for shit haha

For some reason Warren started freestyling on a lot of those, and it was not good to say the least. I didn’t care though, the songs were still dope. The beats and vibe were there. I love that album. Was always my favorite one out of any of those(Chronic, Doggstyle). I’m not saying it was the best, but it was my favorite.

Yea for sure. But I'd be really interested to know how that relationship/those relationships have been. Snoop and Warren owe a lot of success to Nate. Vice versa too of course but Nate's gone so they should do their best to honor his legacy.

Yall should check out Bomb First.com..all of these things are discussed in micro detail in the Death Row board.

Dre borrowed Snoop from Warren and shit blew up.
Dre borrowed anything he liked from anybody and slapped his name on it. Warren did Lil Ghetto Boy and Deez Nuts. The original Rat Tat Tat Tat is on the beat Warren made (he used it on And You Don't Stop.) Dre told Warren not to sign so he didnt. Suge wanted them all under his thumb. When Warren signed to Russell..Suge made a huge mess over giving the song Regulate to Def Jam. Warren was still Dogg Pound. He's on the original version of Let's Play House and Suge made them remove his verse. Suge didnt respect Dre. Suge didnt like Russell. Suge couldn't own Warren because he never signed. Suge Suge Suge.

My one criticism of the album right now would be having "Annie May" as the first track. I get what G was going for, trying to come firing out of the gates with the Warren/Nate collab just like he did on "Regulate" but "Annie May" isn't a strong enough song to open an album. It's a really good song and a nice change of pace from what "Regulate" was as a song from a tonal standpoint, but just doesn't hit hard enough as an album opener and should've been dropped somewhere around track 4,5 or 6 or something.

There were some missteps (like the Ruff Ryders song), but:
Dope Beat
If We Give You a Chance
G-Spot
Game Don’t Wait
Gangsta Love
I Want It All

There was enough there. The song with Crucial Conflict was cool too. You Never Know, I liked too.

I almost mentioned this myself *props*

But yea this was some of his most diverse production, and subject matter. I love this album.

You nailed the great tracks. Dope Beat is so fire.

I liked the Dre remix of "Game Don't Wait" but both are good. The piano is just too hard on the Dre version. Wish it was on Spotify.

From the outside looking in it seems like Dre has always kept his distance. Warren comes across very happy go lucky, and I don't know if that is something Dre felt uncomfortable about. Or maybe Dre didn't want to baby him.

Warren didn't strike me as the type of dude who would fight tooth and nail over anything. Seemed like he just wanted to get his and have fun, be with his crew ... like you said, just a happy-seeming dude.

There may have been a part of Dre that knew just how non-confrontational Warren was, how mild-mannered he was and thought ... he can't be a part of this mess. Like Dre knew he and Snoop and DPG were cut out for the gangsta life Suge was bringing around, and that Warren wasn't.

But I tend to believe what the dude below you said ... that Dre just gets a pass for a lot of things for whatever reason and in fact, Warren kinda got fucked. And I'm a huge Dre fan, for the record. I've just had to kind of re-think my opinion of him in recent years.

Suge didn't take him seriously until Warren got his deal with Def Jam and Regulate blew up
then all of a sudden Suge wanted him on Death Row
Even stepped to Chris Lighty (was managing Warren) about it
Chris (a street goon gone corporate) let Suge know he wasn't to be fucked with
so of course Suge the bully tried to ambush Lyor Cohen at a party
Chris had to save Elroy's ass

This is what I got from the Mogul podcast by Combat Jack, so many jewels in there

Only joints that ever stuck with me on there were the ones where Nate was carrying it: Joystick, Lonely Girl, So Fly. Brown Skin didn’t even make the album if I remember right, and it would’ve been one of the best songs on there.

That album was just ok IMO, which was a missed opportunity. If I recall, the story was that Snoop wanted other production. Warren still had beats. In the Midnight Hour came out a year or so later and had some joints on it. Warren and Nate always made great music together. Snoop should’ve just played his role and worried about spitting some heat(which he mostly didn’t) and let the producer handle everything else.

It kinda ruined the novelty of it. We waited a long time for 213, who'd been a matter of legend for years, to put something together. The MC, the crooner, the DJ/producer. And they relegate G to "2nd MC" duties when he's not even a remotely good rapper ?!

Fucking bogus. Big L for Snoop making that terrible call. Warren's always had beats.

I would've liked some Warren G beats on that album but the 213 album still was full of heat though, I think it was suppose to be a new material for a second Doggy Style Allstars album and Snoop got a call from TVT Records to make a 213 album.

I will say Warren G did do the remixes for "Groupie Love" which are dope as well.

he just wasn't gonna get knickel and dime the Suge way and it was a smart move because when He dropped "Smokin Me Out" back in 97 he was still going Gold and also at that time Snoop was off DR, Dre was gone to start aftermath and Pac was dead and Suge was in the Joint.

Warren G was smart for that in the bigger picture and since Suge had the Interscope charge card keep these cats on Lay away well it was what it was.

Per the man's own words posted above, he *wanted* in on the Death Row thing but was shunned by Dre. Which, as you point out, was a stroke of luck ultimately because Suge was shady and G got his money from Def Jam and blew the fuck up on his own.

But given the opportunity, Warreng would've gotten fucked by Suge just like the rest of them did. He didn't, as you say, like outsmart the Death Row machine. He just wasn't invited to take part in it.

Sort of related but: why didn't Snoop go to bat for his DJ w/Dre and Suge ? I'd be interested to ask both Warren and Snoop about that. Snoop obviously had major clout with DR and if it weren't for Warren, Snoop may not have been taken in by Dr e... so why wouldn't he scrap and claw to get G put on ?

It wasn't a "mutual respect" thing at Death Row. Snoop was a lil nigga to Suge and Dre.. And Dre tried to protect his lil brother from Suge because he knew shit wasnt all kosher and it probably saved his life and career.

he rolled on a one way ticket with Dr Dre.
and if you have followed Snoop's career like i know you have
then you know he will roll with whomever is the main producer and whomever is paying the bills

he was like that with Dr Dre he did the same with Master P, did the same with Pharrell

Snoop was already being Pimped by Suge since Suge got dollar off Snoop's Publishing until about 8-10 years back

i still don't think Warren G would have had that Star Solo "IT" Power on Death Row because Snoop had it, Dr Dre had It and Tupac had It.

Suge was about making superstars and loot. Warren G hit however long term catelog,etc.. things went as they should have

also Suge bailed out Snoop and One favor was gonna be it on top of owning him on Death Row

Definitely not trying to diss him. In fact me personally, I consider mild-mannered and level-headed a compliment and a credit to him, considering the hard area he came from.

And yea he was a crip, that's true. But I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility to think that maybe he joined the crips out of necessity due to where he lived, but that he wasn't necessarily in the thick of things or all that involved beyond just identifying with them and rolling with them. I dunno. Just speculating of course, I'm obviously not a gang expert. But I think 20+ years of video, interview, and musical evidence is proof enough that he's a pretty mild-mannered person overall. Not once did he ever strike me as the hardcore gangmember that, say, C-Style or Tray Deee so obviously were, know what I mean ?

But again I want to make clear that I'm not trying to disparage him or call him a pussy or anything like that haha. Just making an observation based on how he's presented himself since the beginning of his career. And it's a good thing.

Especially in LA. What that song doesn't highlight is the Regulate situation actually took place during an early run of the BET Awards. So with that context I'm sure you'll understand that this robbery makes TOTAL sense.
