"Was Lee Morgan better than Miles?"

If Lee didn’t die prematurely he probably would’ve been the best trumpeter. Lee more than likely would not have pushed the envelope like Miles, but as a straight ahead player he definitely would’ve surpassed him. I haven’t heard a Lee Morgan that I didn’t like. It would’ve been interesting to hear what Lee would’ve done throughout the 70’s and 80’s.

But my dad, who's listened to jazz for much of his 74 year life and was a big Miles fan, told me he thinks Lee Morgan is better. At least as a pure trumpet player.

Lee, Clifford Brown, etc, but the argument always comes down to Miles' bandleading/bandbuilding, influence, and longevity.

From a pure player position, give me Clifford all day. Imagining Brownie in 65-69???? My mind is blown at the possibilities. But like wondering what Biggie would have done in the age of Trap, we'll never know...

Lee gave us glimpses of his new directions at the end of his career. The Lighthouse set alone shows us that he would have always been at Miles' heels, forever the Stones to his Beatles, however great they both are/were...

He was in that Satchmo/Clifford Brown/Donald Byrd/Clark Terry/Freddie Hubbard class of trumpet playing. Miles wasn't a slouch and held back a lot when he played with Cannonball Adderley and Coltrane, but I think even would tell you he was a better player even then.

As stated he never moved into the areas that Miles did. I am talking about pure ability to play the trumpet. We don’t know what he done to expand musically because he died at a young age.

We can quibble over technical shit, but Miles made Kind of Blue, In a Silent Way, Someday My Prince Will Come, Sketches of Spain, etc, etc etc.

And Lee made Live at the Lighthouse, The Last Session, Search for the New Land, etc, etc, etc.

In terms of recordings they both put out legendary stuff.

Clifford I would have to slot behind both of them, and was great in his own right.

What if Morgan lived longer is all speculation. He might have lived longer and started putting out some terrible records. The range Miles showed across his discography makes him hard to beat in these discussions.

You can’t assume that Morgan would’ve put out bad material. Miles on the other hand had some not so great recordings in the 80’s.

Why wouldn’t I assume he wouldn’t eventually make a misstep if Morgan had a 50 year career? That’s the norm. No one knocks it out the park for decades on end.

Morgan, Miles, and Byrd as far as the oldies go. Christian Scott in modern day more than the other new schoolers.

In all honesty Byrd is my favorite, but I don’t put him ahead of Morgan in terms of ability.

...which is a no-no in any form of African-derived music.
Accordingly, Miles out-swung Lee, AKA Miles rhythmically flowed better than Lee so Miles got it.
