I make all types of playlists based on this idea, man. Here's some seemingly obvious suggestions, but may have disregarded
Pete Rock - The Surviving Elements (2005) -Taken from Soul Survivor 2 sessions, it's actually sounds like an album and not just a beat tape. Because of that, I put this above the Petestrumental tapes.
Dilla - The Shining (Instrumentals) -Easy to dismiss Dilla since you don't want just beat-oriented stuff, but most of the beats here are really fleshed out more.
Maker - Shooting the Breeze (2005) -this is semi-classic to me. I used to love dude's production, but I never really was feeling any of the Galapagos4 artists he collaborated with back then. He also formed a duo with someone on the label (I think) and there's an instrumental version of the album that's also real dope, but I can't remember enough info to know what to google. Maybe somebody else knows?
Here's some more albums that I think fit your description:
Blockhead - Downtown Science (2005), Music by Cavelight (2004) Dday One - Heavy Migration (2008), Loop Extensions (2010), Mood Algorithms (2011) Tall Black Guy - 8 Miles to Moenart (2013) Science Fiction - Broken Jazz 101 EP (2003) Denaun (Mr.) Porter - Porter Chops Glasper (2013) Bonobo - Dial 'M' for Monkey (2003)
These are more beat-oriented, but if you're making playlists, I think they'd fit in real well:
DJ Smash - Recollection, Vol. 1 (2001) DJ Mitsu the Beats - Beat Installments, Vol. 1 (2012), Celebration of Jay (2014) Clams Casino - 32 Levels (instrumentals) (2016) Pete Rock - My Own Worst Enemy (w. Edo G) (instrumentals) (2004), NY's Finest (instrumentals) (2008), Petestrumentals 1 and 2 Diego Bernal - For Corners (2009)
Foreign Exchange - any album of instrumentals Black Milk - lots of instrumentals if you can find them (I hope Fever gets an instrumental release)
These are electronic or borderline electronic albums which some have more abrasive sounds, but if you sift through the albums, you'll find a surprising number of tracks that fit the type of tracks you're looking for:
Flying Lotus - 1983 (2006) (probably Los Angeles too) Blueprint - Chamber Music (2005) Samiyam - Sam Baker's Album (2011) Dabrye - One/Three (2001), Two/Three (2006) DJ Rels (aka Madlib) - Theme for a Broken Soul (2004) Bonobo - The North Borders (2013)
If I come up with more, I'll definitely post them up. #NP: Janelle Monae-DC, Pusha T-Daytona, Royce-Book of Ryan, Blue Note All-Stars-OPOV, Chris Dave/Drumhedz-Glow, Conway-GOAT, Black Milk-Fever, KRIT-4eva Is a Mighty.., Phonte-NNIGN, August Greene, Jericho Jackson @LargesseMorlu
