That LP got a great reception when it first dropped, aged extremely well and will continue to do so, and its legend only grows as he waits years to drop another album.

That album has Madvillain-level status among "underground" hip-hop heads. It's a crime that more people haven't heard it, but it's far from underrated.

One of the best LP's in his catalog....was pretty much done with him when he came out and basically dissed this project a year or two later. Way before it's time, and still rock it on the regular....

I couldn't understand the hate for the album outside of maybe one or two songs (wasn't feeling Jimi Was a Rock Star...Come Close was a snooze).

Common's last two records didn't get enough love either.

... I don't love Nobody's Smiling too much. I appreciate the concept and the focus, but I don't revisit all that often outside a couple tracks.

Black America Again was a fucking gem though.

And agree with everything re: EC. Super underrated, unfairly maligned, and the only two duds were the ones you named. Rest of the album was FIRE and Common was rapping his ass off at this time in his career. On another level.

Loved it from day one. Common held his own against some of the lushest production ever recorded for a rap album. The Electric Circus tour was amazing as well.

Didn't Common himself shit on that record? Pretty sure Dilla panned it in an interview as well. Never understood the hate...it seemed like a natural progression from LWFC.

...there are way more under-appreciated albums. OC's "Word Life" for example, which sold about one fifth what Electric Circus did, comes immediately to mind. Kill My Landlord and Genocide and Juice are two more. Basically everything on Wild Pitch lol

Are we talking albums that did well critically and ratings wise that didn’t sell well or get much exposure?

Or are we talking about albums that weren’t really all that well received critically that we actually think are dope?

Or albums that did well in their time and were well received that have kinda been forgotten about as time has passed?

Or any and all of the above?

Is it mad overlooked, hells yeah, but when it was first released it got a lot of praise, had a dope single from it, even a dope remix from Large Pro, it showed the world that Pharoahe Monch was a beast on the mic, I don't remember anybody not liking this album, for a long time it even was in a lot of people's top 10 best rap albums lists till the late 90's when other albums knocked it out of position.

Definitely a cool record, but the beats far outweighed the rhymes to me. And I didn't even have a problem with "Far From Yours."

His Tiny Desk concert was really sick though. Wasn't expecting that. Awesome to see him still making music...he sounds clear and confident too.

I think OC did a great job of covering all bases while not dumbing down and not being too preachy or conceptual.

It’s my example of a perfect album in terms of arrangement...hard joints, love joints, underground club joints, story joints, introspective joints...it really does cover a lot of territory while staying cohesive.

And yes...the beats are amazing.

Reel to Reel doesn't get mentioned because Puba wasn't as good as he was on the Brand Nubian album.

Casual is nice, but a lot of those songs on "Fear Itself" don't really stick. I could toss half of them and add his B sides and remixes from that time.

"It's A Me Thing" smokes most of the songs on the album.

"Later On" remix is better than a lot of songs on the album. I think the OG is better than half the album too.

"Rock On" is dope.

The remix of "That's How it Is" is dope, as is "That's How it Is" pt.2 with A-Plus.

I use to like "As The World Burns" except one or two songs, but these days this album isn't as good as I thought it was, some songs are cornier than I thought too, to me it was too many rappers in the mix and not enough cohesion between them all, I can see why Dstroy left, he got overlooked plus he was better on his own if you ask me; Q-Unique & Jise were dope together while the others seemed to not jell well with their vocals & verses sometimes.

I remember finding the instrumentals of this album and liking most of the beats but a few beats were kind of bland, when it first dropped I liked all the beats but not now, oh well.

selling like hotcakes, and a lot of flat, unfinished sounding music was released under the guise of "real hip-hop".

You can hear it all in the rhymes, if only they knew people would still be listening 20 years later. I play a lot of tunes from that era off the strength of nostalgia, then end up cutting them off.

Doom still holds up, Cannibal Ox still holds up, and I still enjoy some songs out of Thirstin Howl's early catalog. But for the raps have aged extremely poorly, and the beats are blander than I recall.

late 90's / early 00's underground aesthetics (with Zion I's Mind over Matter, Binary Star's Masters of the Universe & the Rawkus roster). Also they repped Hip Hop Culture (and its elements) pretty hard. They were also a crew of breakdancers, dj's, mc's & graff artists. There weren't that much groups like that making a dent in the industry at that time.

Songs like "Backdraft", "Pyromaniax", "Underground Vandal" "Blaze", "Venom", "Rhyme Time Travel", "Seed", "Worlds Collide", "Flashback"

are (again imo) undeniable and I think they aged quite well.

artist out of Hiero, and those songs still hold up pretty well.

My initial issues with him were that

1. He's the least rappity rap out of the bunch, which was a demerit in 1994

2. His name is Snupe. Or is it Extra Prolific? But he calls himself "Snupe". Ridiculous that he thought the fans were even willing to entertain it. Even if you call him "Extra Pro", that's STILL problematic.

Over time I appreciated the fact that he wasn't forcing himself to be as clever with the wordplay & punches as the rest of his crew. His flow was incredible, his voice was dope, and his charisma seemed natural. Could never get past the name though.

I play the "Like It Should Be" album to this day, and maybe skip one or two songs depending on mood.

I don't remember what he produced on the first album. Did he even have anything to do with 2 for 15? He's not credited. So it's really just "Snupe". Is that Mike G. on the first album cover? I'm not sure, the text covers his face lmao.

Damn I forgot all about how terrible this album cover art was. Jesus.

"Hazardous" is a weird album, it's around the time when rappers had upbeat tracks and a lot of jazzy beats too, but when I found a copy of this album on vinyl (for $2) back in 1994, I was so hyped cause by then I was a big fan of Ultramagnetic MC's & Cenobites demo stuff, so I was thinking this was going to be on the same level, nope.

Is this album hard to find, hells yeah, was it overlooked by almost everyone, hells yeah, is it a great album from one emcee who also produces his own beats, hells yeah, should've gotten more praise, hells yeah, but to me it's mad dated, if it came out in 1988 instead of 1991 would it have got the exposure it should've got, I believe it would've but to me this album only has three dope songs on it ("Hazardous", "Homicide", & "Read The Lines") while the rest is just decent for an unknown at the time of it's release.

I use to own this album on cassette, use to play the hell out of it, this album is so dope, it's basically can be played today and still be as meaningful as it was back then.

It's amazing that basically The Jungle Brothers is what really the start of the whole Native Tongues movement and yet they are the most overlooked out of the collective, even maybe more overlooked than The Beatnuts or even Black Sheep is.

Anyway, The JB's second album is a classic, got a lot of great singles from it that still can be played today and still get the same positive reaction as back then.

Demons was a cool EP that showed their sampling prowess but had to be rushed due to Fashion catching a bid and the usual label politics

Street Level was real dope but it came out in the greatest year in Hip Hop history (94) and so it was kinda lost among the classics upon classics upon classics that year. It was just another dope album in 94.

But when Stone Crazy dropped, the puff daddy jiggy era was in full swing
It was one of the last sample heavy joints and they stepped up on the mic as well

Grand Puba, Ed. O.G., and Jamal-ski (pre 'Happy Feet' soundtrack) were my favorites. The Pharcyde showed how fun their new album was going to be.

But Puba's flow, that bassline, and those scratches were so perfect and smooth. Straight butta'.

The video....loved the grimy black and white shots.

I always loved "I Call Shots." Don't really love "Tequila" but either way, had no clue they did either of these beats. Wild. What a connection.

Either way, I agree. This is Kurupt's best album IMO And hella underrated. Was overshadowed by Chronic 2 and rightfully so but I simply wish it had been released at a different time.

Below The Heavens...outside of a small section of folks who would actually call themselves "hip-hop heads", most folks I've talked about it with had never heard, but most of them have really connected with it.

this was his "standard hip hop album" before he went all the way left
I mean he was already bugged but there's enough straight brag rap and shit talking to make it acceptable among conservative heads
(conservative= people that thought Dr. Octagon and Freestyle Fellowship were weird WPS)

I think its a masterpiece, but seems like its pretty divisive.

Also, this is personal, but Lyricist Lounge Volume 1 is one of the most important records I've ever heard. That album expanded my view of hip hop behind what was on Rap City or available at Circuit City.

----
I check for: Serengeti, Zeroh, Open Mike Eagle, Jeremiah Jae, Moka Only.

The album is uneven, so I could never call it a classic. But there's a album worth of good to great songs on there.

That's Me
Whatever
Come Kill Me
Violence
Double Up
Losing Weight
SDE
What Means the World to You
All the Chickens
Where I'm From
Let Me Know
My Hood

If you hear a cool rap style on this album, just go ahead and take it.

You may be able to jump start a pretty successful rap career off of it. And no one's going to trip.

Crazy that an album that is so in the pocket of that mid 90's type hip-hop sound never came into my purview.

and I am loving listening to this for the first time 20 yrs later.

I think Chris Rock said the same thing.

After this dropped, I pretty much stopped listening to “All Eyez On Me” thru the summer of 96.

...AND I didn’t pick up “It Was Written” until like 97.
