Next time we plan to go north to Florence, Naples, etc. We wanted to do it all this time but it would have been a logistical nightmare to fly to Rome, then try and go both north and south and see everything we wanted to see in 13 days. So we spent the first 5 days in Rome then went south to the coast for the rest of the trip.
But you can't go wrong going either direction from what I understand. And yes we had mostly pleasant experiences with everyone from citizens to service staff, especially in Rome. Being American, we're used to a tipping culture at restaurants and bars. So the first two places we stopped we just naturally dropped a few $1 coins on the table. Both waiters very pleasantly explained to us that waitstaff are paid appropriate wages and therefore tipping is not only not necessary, but almost looked at as an affront or an insult so to keep our money and just pay the bills straight up. Was good advice.
Sounds like you may already been reasonably well traveled but just in case - one thing I should warn you about is pickpocketers. We were warned ahead of time by literally every single person we spoke with about Italy, to be very wary of them, as they are *prevalent* in Europe. They, naturally, especially target people who are obviously tourists so I'd have a plan in place to hide your valuables when you are traveling. We had like bags inside bags inside bags, and anytime one of us pulled money or a wallet out, the other was on the lookout. We were there just under 2 weeks and saw 5 pickpocket situations like right in front of us.
Anyway I won't highjack the post any further - but please feel free to inbox me if you want more Italy-specific details, itinerary, who to reach out to for historic tours and things like that, etc ... happy to help. I have a lot of good things to say about, and recommendations for, an Italy trip. ----------------------------------------
