Instrumental psychadelic funk group from the '70s. Actually the house band for Invictus Records. Most prominent member was McKinley Jackson, a Motown trombonist/session musician. Even though they had one famous break record, no one ever talks about them.

The Necessaries only released one real album before they disbanded, and it's one of my favorites.

Arthur Russell went on to make some really interesting music, but died early in the 90s. His music has been getting more attention recently, particularly through Devonte Hynes who is a huge fan.

and I think there was a movie about him a while back as well? i dunno

I'd never heard of him until Benn Sollee included 'I Couldn't Say It To Your Face' on a covers EP and I thought damn, how have I never heard this wonderful song before. No surprise that the original is great.
