"Royce da 5'9" - Book of Ryan"

Drops tomorrow.

But the bigger news, is Eminem is rapping his ass off and not screaming on this new track: https://pitchfork.com/news/eminem-wants-to-take-an-ax-to-mumble-rap-on-new-royce-59-song-listen/?mbid=social_twitter

Deanun carries the bulk of the album and the music actually keeps pace with Royce this time.

Only missep off the first listen is Legendary, but First Of the Month makes up for it....because I didn't think a T-Pain & Royce sound would sound as good as it does.

It's his habit of screaming over emo beats for the better part of the last decade that's bothered people.

i think there was one song that was okay, rest is really good.

the skits may break things up for some but listening through everything once is worth it. the skits actually add to the album with how personal this is.

will need further listens.

lyricism, songwriting, innovative rhyme patterns

makes all the knob-slobbing over 4:44 and its "grown up" theme seem really silly in retrospect. that shit was so contrived. but this seems as real as real gets.

I hope Em's serious about boom bap taking an ax to mumble rap. AKA I hope he decides to rap (not scream) over a few (a whole album's worth) decent (non-emo) beats before he calls it a career.

Anyway I'm psyched to hear this whole album. All the reviews I'm reading, including here, are positive. I was so let down by PRhyme that I could use a re-do on my 2018 Royce needs haha. Layers was really good so if this is as good or better I will be v happy.

BoR is a maturation of the themes and songwriting from Layers

and when he said "Hamilton" changed his lofe, he wasnt playing around. this is a very theatrical album and a lot of the music is "show-tuney" in a way that works amazingly well.

his early stuff wasnt very appealing to me but i made a point to check out all his efforts. when he did some work with black milk is when it started hitting me that this guy really can do it.

i figured he would just fade from there but he has been stepping it up with pretty much every release.

It's not perfect but it doesn't need to be. Really well done. Power is amazing. Cocaine is also amazing. There's a lot of heart in this album. I was scared with all those damn tracks but it's a really dope album.

The mixing/mastering on "Part of Me", one of the best songs on the album, is completely abysmal. I have to watch the video on YouTube in order to listen to it.

You guys already hit the high points but just to reiterate: Amazing and Power are ... fucking Amazing. The whole thing tho ... damn. Royce, as you guys (again) have already touched on, can write a damn song these days. I love how he took it a little left, got his singing on a lil bit, I love the production ... this is probably his best project IMO. It gives Death is Certain, Success is Certain and Layers a run for their money at the very least.

I still need to digest a lot of it but what a great piece of work.

I don't get the universal praise this is getting. Don't me wrong, the overall idea and effort is excellent but...

First, the album seems like two separate albums smashed together. In a weird way too. It's like he had this idea for a dope concept, and something (doubt, label, whatever) made him half-a$$ it. A lot of these tracks don't fit. Should have released two short albums or something.

Second, some of the beats/hooks? Meh. I read on here someone compared it to a musical? I guess that is kind of fitting, but it isn't really done particularly well.

Third, I'm good on Royce singing- no matter how dope the concept is. He's just not a dude who can pull that off to me. I was very disappointed when I got to that track.

Also, when is he going to stop pandering to Em's fanbase? I don't think it is a coincidence that his last albums have had features from guys like Logic (lol lol), Yelawolf (wtf?), Mac Miller (lol), and Em himself now.

Just seems almost painfully obvious he is trying to ensure **those** numbers at any cost.

I dunno. Royce is a spitter obviously, and it is nice to hear him stretch out with actual songs and concepts...but overall this album isn't hitting like THAT to me.

I kind of feel like people pull for him because he's a rappers rapper, the underdog, got a raw deal initially, etc...and let him kind of get away with corny sh!t that others would get called out for.

I mean the 4:44 comparisons...how bad would this place fry Jay-Z for doing tracks with Logic and sh!t? Or Nas for some of these beats and corny hooks? Or Kweli if he tried to sing? Hell Cole gets fried for his singing all the time. But its okay for Royce?

Just feels like he's getting graded on an underdog/likeable curve.

**shrugs**

Don't really know what you mean, but okay. Fair.

>Second, some of the beats/hooks? Meh. I read on here someone

So do you not like the way it sounds? You seem to be
responding to the praise and not the way the album
actually sounds.

>Third, I'm good on Royce singing- no matter how dope the

Okay. Finally a point directly about how the music
sounds.

>Also, when is he going to stop pandering to Em's fanbase? I
>don't think it is a coincidence that his last albums have had

"Pandering."

Stop it.

Do you like those songs, or not?

Because most of the songs you're talking actually SOUND
good. All this psychoanalysis about "pandering" is silly.
Stop it, please.

>Just seems almost painfully obvious he is trying to ensure
>**those** numbers at any cost.

Don't know what you're talking about.

It's music. You listen to it.

>I dunno. Royce is a spitter obviously, and it is nice to hear

Okay, so you just don't like the way it sounds? That's fine

More psychoanalysis.

Nobody cares about that shit.

People like the album because it sounds good.

Weird argument here. You should have probably just kept this
point inside your head and wrote it in a diary or something
because it doesn't make a lot of sense here.

>Just feels like he's getting graded on an underdog/likeable
>curve.

You're reading too much into it.

People put the album on, and liked the way it sounded.

Relax, buddy.

I expected a response from you, because you are
predictable.

Anyone who posts less than positively about
one of your favorites, you try some weirdo
sh!t like “talk about how it sounds only”

When, that is clearly a bull sh!t reply because we all
- including yourself- talk about more than that.

In fact, you often post about double standards
beyond just the music. Your posts about
Lupe come to mind. Kendrick. In fact, seems
like you often post about perceived
double standards, etc.

Hell we have even been on the same side
with regards to Lupe.

If the rule here was “only talk about how
things sound” it would be even more dead around
here,

A good hint that my reply wasnt just about the music
was when i said “Im surprised at the universal
praise”

Another hint was when i said i was still digesting- Im
fully aware that how something sounds can click
down the road.

So, those are two big hints in my post. Scratching
my head as to why you read and even responded
point by point to me when you just “want to talk
about how it sounds” ...but do you.

Oh, and i guess i should have been more clear
on one point- i dont like the sound of Logic,
Yelawolf, or Mac Miller rapping. There- now i made
point about “sound” you can rest easy.

Cmon man.

And for the record- no I’m not hating. Theres plenty to
like here and Royce is very deserving of more love
in general. I was just surprised i seemed to be the
only one that hasnt loved every piece of the album.

For one, the PRhyme features are just random rappers he said he liked for the beats Premier made. Yelawolf in particular, Royce has talked about him in interviews admiring his style. And tbh, every song they have been on together (quite a few actually given the Shady connection) is good to me.

Eminem, I mean...that one should be obvious. If that was about numbers, I feel like he would have asked Em for a verse a long time. So far, they have only featured on each other's album once each. Thats a pretty discretionary to me.

Isnt that the point of bulding credibility over time? So that when youe artistic vision goes that way, youve built up enough trust to get a pass?

But a bunch of people here already formed their opinions that those people are cornballs anyways. I mean..."Black Republicans" lol. It would be, "there goes jay, being a cornball again". Here, its a rapper who (as you said) is a rappers rapper being vulnerable. Royce has worked exceptionally hard to maintain the articstic integrity that gave him this pass.

Maybe. I for one am definitely not unbiased at all. Dude's whole "thing" has always been inspirational and relatable to me since i was a teenager (Im 35). But he earned his pass by taking the long road to this point.

In response to Reply # 38

Which definitely applies here.

To be clear, Im not complaining about the subject
matter at all. Quite the opposite.

I just...I dont know man, Im just personally
not trying to hear Royce sing.

And, I do wonder what the response would be
if it were Nas on some of these beats. I suppose
you would say Nas lost credibility, but at dome point
a cheesey beat is a cheesey beat.

As far as the Yelawolf thing...you mentioned
the label connection, which is kind of my point.

Sometimes his features come off like paint-by-numbers
label decisions.

Onviously, it doesnt help that I dont like these dudes.

But Royce rhyming with Logic is just kinda weird
to me. And it really seems like a purposeful
attempt to keep a certain fan base.

Anyway, thanks for the level headed reply. Again,
theres plenty to like here and i still need to spend
more time with it.

One is more hiphop, raw lyricism and beats.
The other is the more personal stuff.

I felt like there could’ve been 2 short albums.

It’s a good album, but Royce could use an executive producer imo.
That’s not a knock - but I still think Death is Certain is his best album.

And he worked mostly with one producer for that one.
Kept it rather short.

When albums have this split-personality I tend to look at the songs that don't fit the strict overall narrative as breaks or sidebars from the main thematic flow. I mean, it's cool if every song can fit within a story arc but I'm not mad if there's a few songs that step outside and exist on their own (this is the Book of Ryan, but meanwhile..."I got the summer on lock").

An album that could've used a couple of those breaks was the August Greene album. There was and is a ton to like on that album but it was almost *too* consistent. Almost sounded like one long song some of the time.

Com was kind of dope in sections of the album.
But I listened to it twice and I don't know when I'll revisit it again.

Since Dreamer / Believer album he's produced quite a few new cool flows
and deliveries.

But the words always seem to be the same.

I've had this convo on here before...
Com through EC including features and loosies was maybe my fav emcee of all time.

That catalog since it's a good amount of music
puts him top 15 all time for me.

As I got older, he started to fall on the list.
He could never get back to top 5 but maybe top 10 on some days.

I am a Royce fan but I am not a Royce fan. I only have 2 albums and a few of his singles. He is raw spitter but it has to a perfect mesh of beats and rhymes for me to really pay attention.

But I haven't seen this much response to a Royce project (with the exception of Phryme) in a minute so I think I'll check it out based on the strength of that.

I liked Jay-Z's 4:44 for what it was and had to support No I.D. 'cause it was a good look to helm a Jay-Z project plus dude is from my city.

This Royce album got me curious.

yeah, that's really specific, lol. I'd heard so much about it before I actually listened, I told myself I wanted to really form my own opinion. So, I'm pretty sure of my thoughts on it:

After all those listens...I am still annoyed by Legendary and Summer on Lock. It's not even that they are bad songs, they just feel SO misplaced. For subsequent listens, I think I will just pull them out.

Goodness, Em!!! There's probably no one else in rap who could have pulled off that Silva line.

The first verse of Boblo Boat sounds like a Kendrick impersonation. The voice, cadence, everything. I had to run it back the first time I heard it. Love the song, though...which leads to my next thought: I've never gotten into any of J. Cole's stuff, but his verse really made me wanna check for him. Maybe start from the beginning with him.

Amazing is AMAZING!

Stay Woke is my favorite song on the album...I wish it was longer.

I don't know enough about Logic to know why I'm not supposed to like him, but I REALLY like the Caterpillar Remix...like, a lot.

Sadly...I could see myself probably not even listening to this album, anymore in a week or so.

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

My biggest complaint - especially in this era where we all listen to music digitally and make playlists and use shuffle modes, is when someone says an album is too long or has too many songs.

Someone of Royce's calibur, just gimme all the damn songs possible on this album. I've seen some people say Legendary sticks out in a bad way, don't feel it (it's my personal least favorite track on the album) but I've seen some say that love that song. Is skipping over it that hard? Does it really ruin the album to have an extra 3 songs that you personally do not like?

Dude went super creative and all those songs came out fire imo, but the straight forward bar fests (stay woke, caterpillar, summer on lock) all sound great to me too why the hell should he make 2 short albums? This argument is so wack to me. This album is supposed to be his opus, his classic, why wouldnt he give you a bit of everything?

Phonte's album is insane too, but as hard as it starts he drops a few of those rnb / fe joints at the end, this is not that crazy of an idea and does not ruin albums

but he probably never sees a purchase from me for the physical.
If I like an album a lot - I want to get the vinyl.

I like Royce a lot as an emcee. I think he's brilliant.
I put him in same group of rappers as Black Thought, Pharoahe, Lupe...

It's a different group from say another group that
might include: Sigel, Scarface, and Prodigy.

I want to have discussions with people about albums
where you could have the conversation...
Could this potentially be held in same regard as a GREAT GREAT album
or even classic?

He hasn't made that album yet, imo.
And less and less artists are gonna make that album
because like you said you can just skip.....)

artists are gonna continue to play the numbers game
and release a lot of songs per album to get the streams.
The vision and concept of an album is gonna get lost that way.

Create an album that flows, has the right amount of songs,
know when to say enough is enough...

(I don't really care to listen to a Migos ALBUM but even them -
no reason an aLbum needs to be like 27 songs)

...and the other songs recorded during the creation of the album
can be released on streaming as well. label em outtakes or songs that didn't make it but were recorded during this time frame.
get your streams that way.

By far his best album. Great story telling, great barz. Even when the beats are not the hottest, he has my ears. Been on repeat for the last week. Love 'Cocaine', 'Caterpillar' (Em's verse was dope, but not the highest caliber).

Amazing. Could tell this was a very personal album....but wow, he definitely stepped up. Denaun Porter also did his thing.
